Today B&N launched their latest update for the Nook Color and it's a Big one. It includes Android 2.2!

Sweet. I can not wait to update. CM7 runs perfectly off my Sandisk Class 4 8GB card, so even if they have blocked rooting, I am still willing to update. That said, as long as they allow dual booting, rooting should always be possible.

Dual booting from SD card is wired into the hardware, there is nothing they can do in software to stop it.
Will Rooted NC get the update?
I have rooted my NC.
I followed instructions for directly applying update with no luck.
Am I correct that the rooted NC will not receive update and that I must return to stock before I can get the new update?
PS If this is true, what is it about the rooted NC that prevents the update?
kernel version?
Can anyone post the kernel version after the update please?

I would suggest flashing back to stock, re-register then applying the update from B&N. (That should remove the root) That what I am doing for a few people at work. Will report back on progress but logically that should work.
What's the point of going to 1.2 if it's not rooted yet?
Some important information from another Forum:
Successful download of update and install
File name: nookcolor_1_2_update.zip
File size: 190 MB (199,715,879 bytes) Size on disk: 190 MB (199,716,864 bytes)

if your 1.2 update fails, check the MD5 on the file against this one. If it is different, your downloaded update file is corrupt.
If I am rooted on just stock 1.1 using one of the autnooter methods what can I do to just flash back to stock and lose root. I saw one thread in the developer forum with a stock 1.1 zip file and figured I could try that. I do not mind losing root as I haven't really been keeping up with all the different roms being released lately and will be using it more for just reading books. Here is the thread I am referring to:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=945838
Stock 1.1 file works
I was rooted on 1.1 and installed the stock 1.1 file you refer to.
All went well and I was returned to stock 1.1.
Followed Barnes and Noble instructions for the downloaded update and file was recognized as soon as unit went to sleep.
Installation happened automatically and now I am at 1.2.
The kernel is 2.6.32.9... the os is froyo.

I tried to install the update over an Autonootered 1.1. All that happened was the device rebooted and the update.zip file was deleted from the nook. I presume that I need to flash it back to an original version and then install the upgrade. I was hoping I could just layer this update on top of what I have so I wouldn't lose apps that are already installed.
If you have not modified anything after Autonooter, simply following the directions in the 'Flash back to clean stock ROM' wiki and you'll be presented with an out-of-the-box booting NC. After that, simply follow the 'Manual Download Instructions' posted at the Barnes & Noble website to update your NC to the official new stock v1.2.0 ROM.
If you're having trouble updating your NC with Unrooted Stock like me then here's what you need to do. You'll have to reflash to Factory Defaults.
Perform Step 1, Method 1; then Step 2, Method 1
http://nookdevs.com/Flash_back_to_clean_stock_ROM
This Reinstalls Stock v1.0 to System partition and then wipes your Data and EMMC partitions. You must perform both steps otherwise it won't work correctly.
Start up Your Nook and follow the Setup. Now download the Update ZIP and drop it on your EMMC's root. Tap the Power button to put the Nook to Sleep. Now Sit back as the Update is installed Automatically.

I don't understand what's going on. I am not a noob; I've rooted 10+ android devices and have been in the mobile game since windows mobile 5.
I follow all instructions to the T from here
http://nookdevs.com/NookColor_Rooting
Everything goes as it should until it is time for the final reboot. Instead of displaying a new boot animation, it simply gets stuck at the screen with the lowercase "n" that says the blurb about adobe at the bottom.
Same both with the SD card in, and without it.
I am able to salvage the situation by doing the 8 interrupted boot plus the homescreen and power key. Started from scratch again - updated to 1.01, reflashed the sd card, etc.
Same result. This is a brand new device, just bought today.
Any ideas? You don't think they killed the root exploit, do you?
I believe I just figured out the problem. The link in the WIKI to the B&N 1.01 update is outdated and incorrect - it links to the incompatible 1.1 update instead, which is not autonooter supported.
Those instructions worked for me. It sounds as if your boot partition is completely empty. Are you using Auto-nooter 2.12.25? That is the version you need to use if your NC is already running 1.0.1.
edit:
Just saw your update. In that case in the B&N link replace 1.1.0 with 1.0.1 eg:
http://images.barnesandnoble.com/presources/download/nookcolor/v1.1/Sideload_update.zip
should be:
http://images.barnesandnoble.com/presources/download/nookcolor/v1.0.1/Sideload_update.zip
otherwise there are a couple other threads where people have thrown up the 1.0.1 sideload update.

The link has not changed, the B&N reference within it has. But perhaps something should be tweaked on the URL for now, or the instructions. Done.
A friend who's nook is neutered but not updated wants me to update her nook to the latest Barnes and Noble Rom.
On my nook I run the latest CM7 nightly with OC kernel, and have no problem with CWR etc.
On hers, I want to keep it as stock as possible. Just want to update it to the latest stock ROM. And neuter it so she can use market etc.
What's the easiest way to go from a neutered 1.1 to a neutered 1.2 (or whatever is the recent B&N ROM update)? Thanks, and sorry if I got those ROM version numbers wrong.
Will it update itself?
Just wondering if I leave her alone for a week or two will she receive an OTA update automatically? (over wifi I guess?) (even if it's neutered?)
I would wait for a autonooter to come out for 1.2 before doing anything unless you like living on the edge.
I was using a nootered 1.0.1 this morning, had to format my system and Data partitions to restore the nook back to factory. Then i had to manually update to 1.2.
Now I've lost root capability and access to the market. The market that BN does offer is not very impressive.
Will Autonootered nook receive OTA update?
Anyone who Nootered their nook received the latest update? Thanks.
If you rooted your Nook won't update. If you want to update you have to perform a Factory reset. Go to Nookdevs and find the Remove Root page.

If you are using a rooted 1.1, you will need to
1.) Flash Clockwork 3.0.1.0 (or newer) to a micro SD card (Google 'clockwork bootable' and look for a result from mrm3[dot]net)
2.) Download the compatible 1.2 signed image (plain, not keepcwm) and put it on the micro SD card that you just flashed. LINK
3.) Turn off your nook color, put in the micro SD card, and power it up.
4.) You will need to 'flash zip from SD card'. Choose the 1.2 file and flash it.
5.) Go back to main menu (the power button functions as the back button) and do a factory restore (this will clear cache as well)
6.) Pull the sd card from your nook color, then choose "reboot"
7.?) I got an install error on first boot. I waited until the screen turned off on its own, then powered back up. It properly booted to the initial registration screen
****Note, you need Clockwork 3.0.1.0 to flash the 1.2 image, otherwise you will get stuck at the 'n' screen when you try to boot.
I just got done flashing from a rooted 1.1 to stock 1.2. Now to tackle rooting 1.2

I don't think that's the case.
My rooted 1.1 nook has been sitting untouched for about a week. I turned it on today and it looks like I got the OTA update (I am being asked to register when I turn it on as if it was a new nook). As I said, it was rooted and had the 1.1 update only.

Not quite true. There's been anecdotal evidence that a rooted NC with CWM installed in emmc may prevent updates. But as others have mentioned many rooted NC have been updated.

Finished rooting after 1.2 update on my stock backup NC. The MN works just fine. I would suggest backuping up files and flashing back to stock (1.1.0) the rooted NC. Only way I know of to ensure a clean eMMC.
Then load the 1.2 downloaded file from BN and update. Then snag the MN to root.
Side note: Use latest CWR 3.0.2.8 and not 3.0.1.0
Once the 1.2 is rooted you'll probably need to do the "standard gapps" reset (clear cache & FC Apps the Google Framework). Then the entire Market will show.
Note also: some apps will fail to install (for me Angry Birds and Aldiko) Use Root Explorer to download the cut/paste file from downloadnull folder to sys/apps, rename and install using package installer.
Above worked for me earlier today.
Hey there Guys & Gals,
Searched throughout the forums and couldn't seem to find a straight answer on this.
I originally rooted my wife's 1.0.1 NC using Autonooter. That worked out great and then I was able to sideload the 1.1.0 NC updated using ROM Manager and CWR to apply the pre-rooted update ROM (this is where I got the pre-rooted sideload: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=932145). After that I used an SQL editor to turn all the software updates to manual. This manual switch has held the 1.2.0 update off and everything is working great.
However, I'm really interested in 1.2.0 and would love to apply another sideloaded, pre-rooted update IF that exists. Does anyone know if this is out there? It sounds like most NC owners are running CM7 now as opposed to going down the stock rooted (no ROM) version of the NC. Is there anyone who was successfully able to load up rooted 1.2 from rooted 1.1 without having to resort to an alternate ROM?
As a side question, has any 1.1 NC owners had success with the Netflix app or does that absolutely require at least 1.2 to work correctly?
Thanks for your help!!!
-Stephen
Wanted to bump this one again in case anyone had any suggestions. If not, I'll let this thread die.
Same boat here. I'm still running 1.1 with updates set to manual but I have CM7 on SD. I would also like to update to 1.2 but as far as I know, the only way to do it is to return to stock, unrooted 1.1 and then apply the 1.2 update from B&N. After that, you have the manual nooter option to root 1.2.
Have not been able to get Netflix to work on either stock 1.1 or CM7 with and edited build.pro file. It doesn't show up in the Market so I haven't even been able to try to get it to work.
I know there's a CWM-compatible stock 1.2 ROM floating around the dev forum, but I don't know about pre-rooted. It would at least save you unrooting 1.1.
Sounds like best option is to use the 1.2 CWM capable update and then autonoot again... hmmmm. Everything is working great now and I don't want to mess anything up, but netflix and flash are both very tempting...
Just wanted to get the work out that B&N announced on FB this morning (18 minutes ago as I post this) that there is a 1.3 upgrade to the NC.
From the B&N Community link on FB:
Starting today, NOOK Color owners have access to firmware version 1.3, a software update that enhances the best-in-class NOOK Newsstand by offering even more interactive versions of the country’s favorite magazines and newspapers.
Not only does this update offer access to new bestselling titles including People, Time, Sports Illustrated, Fortune, Parents and Fitness magazines, the new capabilities allow for Special Interactive NOOK Editions with enhanced content—like videos, audio podcasts, animations, photo galleries, and more—for select titles. Plus, print subscribers to People, Time, Sports Illustrated and Fortune can enjoy the NOOK Magazine™ versions on their NOOK Color at no additional cost.
Also included in the update are performance improvements and new features.
NOOK Color customers can enjoy these new features through a free software update available at www.nookcolor.com/update or provided over the air (OTA) to customers connected to Wi-Fi beginning this week.
For more details about this update, please read the full press release here.

Okay, I have an interesting situation...
I purposefully installed CM7 on a uSD (using verygreen's guide) to keep my NC stock while I am in my warranty and for other reasons.
At some point however, I must have used CWM's (ROM Manager) feature to Flash CWM Recovery. I know this because when I follow B&N's instructions to manually update to 1.3 the NC reboot's into CWM (I had previously removed my uSD with CM7 on it so there would be no trouble with the update process).
When the NC boots into CWM, it is with errors that it does not find a "signed" zip file and I can only reboot (which reboots back into the stock ROM just fine).
I haven't had much time (as I'm at work at the moment) to investigate this so my question is...does anyone know how to remove CWM that has been installed from the "Flash CWM Recovery" feature in ROM Manager? Or is there a way to bypass CWM during the 1.3 update process?
I was hoping to have this on 1.3 so I could play with it at lunch
Any ideas?
P.S. I am hoping to be able to remove CWM without resorting to flashing a new stock ROM if possible....

Saw that after I posted...I guess I'll have to follow them on twitter, heh
fwiw, I just loaded the stock rom over the top of my stock rom that had CWM flashed to the eMMC.
I wish that CWM had a feature to "un-flash" and that locations were not hard coded in the app (because it seems that it wants to install to eMMC every time) so it could be used interchangeably with the eMMC or a uSD installation of custom ROMs.
Perhaps verygreen's instructions should be updated. I have seen far too many people who ended up with custom coding on their eMMC and that is definitely a no no..... verygreen has not posted in over a month though he has been here.....

Yeah. I had PM'd him regarding his installer a while ago but he has not responded either...he has fallen into "lurker mode"
I don't even know what I was thinking when I flashed it, probably just to see what it did with regard to running from the uSD more than anything else. I had previously been using CM7 on the eMMC before I went the CM7 from the uSD route.
Verygreen very clearly outlines the update process though if we just read his guide. I'll be the first to admit that I usually skim through things and jump right to it, heh, I am sure others do this too. So I can see where it is easy to miss. Even seasoned IT people like me miss things.
I bought my son a Nook for xmas. It was running 1.2 out of the box. I rooted it and added a couple of apps and put it in the box for him. Xmas day, and the Market is not working. When I check the device info, it in now running Ver 1.4.1. What's up? What is my best way to Re-Root it? I tried putting it back to factory stock, and it puts it at 1.4.1.
Help??

Im having the same issue bought one for my dauther for xmas had root had apps and angry birds zeam launcher and so on....she played with it for about 6min then update now on stock 1.4.1 is there a way to root it like nook tablet where you can just have market place and some sort of launcher i really like the best of both worlds on my nook tablet
So, what neither of you did is block updates. Personally, I've found the most effective way is to update the database, but that's water under the bridge now.
Best thing going for your current situation is here
Where is the block update?
Thanks
Supergroomer
Use the 3.0.2.8 CWM image and follow the link doncaruana posted above. Download and copy the MN 5.12.20 to the root of the CWM SD card. Then install the the MN file from within CWM. GMPower has laid it all out in his post in the NC Dev section in a post titled "[NC][1.2][1.3] ManualNooter 4.6.16" just use the MN 5.12.20 file instead.
