He's right, you don't need one. Especially third party ones. If you really need to kill a task or two, though, then the built in task manager will do the trick. Just a note though, killing cached tasked doesn't actually free up space (in my experience anyways).

On the Running tab you will see all running applications and services. Click the one you want to stop and then click stop.
FYI I have never had a need to do this. You're more likely to harm then good when you go killing tasks in Android 2.2 or higher.

I still thinking Advanced Task Killer is a lot simpler since it has a widget that lets me kill all wanted apps on one click.

Usually I kill apps when I feel its getting a bit slow. I do not know why but sometimes my apps use the memory leaving only 50mb left, and that makes the phone laggy and sh*t. Should it be like that? maybe I have virus?

What do you need that memory for? It is there to be used by your phone, let your phone use it. It does not cause your phone to slow down.
Memory is there so that your phone can load data from storage and get it quickly to the CPU. That is why the memory is there. Android keeps important information in memory. Then it can move it quickly to CPU when needed.
It sounds like you would prefer the phone to not use any of the memory in which case I ask why have memory at all then?
"Free memory" is wasted memory.

they are right, on 2.2 and up there is never a need for an appkiller. the way the OS is designed its able to keep all its apps in memory, that was one of the primary changes in 2.2 from 2.1. try not using it and see how it runs, just resist the compulsory need to kill apps XD
If you are using cm, you can use long back press to kill foreground app too. Enable in programs, dev

Try using a BFS kernel, it doesn't kill apps, but gives the app in the foreground more resources

You know it's hard to say. Google TELLS you you shouldn't need a task manager, and if Steve jobs told you this, would you be fuming and flaming Apple?
But seriously, the reason we shouldnt need it is because Google has a decent RAM managing system. But it's not really THAT great. What ends up happening is we play with stuff like minfree and mess with foreground memory usage and stuff. The truth is Google's memory management isn't perfect. That's why we brute force add RAM to our devices goign from 256mb in the Droid to 512mb and to 768mb in some HTC devices and now 1gb in the Atrix and SGS2.
It's pathetic because I come from the 256mb Milestone. Instead of optimizing memory use on an Android device, we have to go overboard. People keep saying task managers aren't necessary, but in Milestone development we mod the hell out of the memory management of Android.
True, task managers and autokilling shouldn't be necessary, but at the same time it won't kill your battery life UNLESS it's doing killing every 5 minutes or something. Once an hour will probably dent your battery life by 1% at most anyway.
The usefulness of task killers is often overstated, but the negatives are often overstated as well.

after removing alot of bloatware from the phone (LG stuff and killing some more apps & widgets)
i get roughly 163M free (after whatsapp, email, adv. task killer )
i am running on stock ROM
what are the numbers that you are getting?
i saw several people with 230M and 200 as well.
how can i get more available memory besides freeze and un-install?
It really doesn't matter, if you need more than you have free, Android will free some up for you.
yeh but i want to understand how it actually works and to remove all the rest of the bloatware from the phone.
since i still think that there are alot of things that arent required for standard operation.
Linux based OS like Android usually keep a lot of apps in memory, and if necessary free the memory for other apps, so it 's not the real problem I think.
The real issue is that some apps runs in background and use radio connection to connect to servers, to verify updates etc, and that drains battery and take CPU time. For example if you have stock firmware, and have some apps installed by your phone provider, or so.
Alternative MODS are free from those bloatwares, and even in stock ROMS if you are rooted you can use Root App Remover to uninstall stock apps that are not necessary.
You can for example try some apps like GO Launcher or Titanium Back UP to freeze the desired apps and prevent them to run in background. Make some tests o see if there is a real difference, I think most of the time it's mainly a psychological issue ;-)

I've noticed this during general use on my phone. Normally when using Twitter or Facebook.
Quite often I will go to use the app and find i've been logged out. I'm guessing the OS killed the app to free up memory for something else.
What I get annoyed with is some apps that Autostart on Bootup when there's no obvious reason why they would need to. (BBC iPlayer etc) This Just takes up memory when it doesn't need to
I've never been logged out of Twitter and/or Facebook... closing the app wouldn't log you out anyway, that's something else altogether.
I got the same issue with skype although its not supposed to logout it does even though he runs in the background

Wife just got a message in her notifications that a new app was released. Click it and took me to market for a Task Killer.

Possibly a notification from an existing app, the developer of which used to notify you of his/her new app.
Check who the dev of the Task Killer is and see if matches any of the apps already on the phone
That's from apps using Airpush adds. Go to the market and download Airpush Detector. It'll tell you which app is doing it, then you can uninstall the bugger!

Even the developer for Mobo Task Killer stop by the thread but it seems no one can figure out who's pushing the ad. Like here AirPush Detector is coming up empty.
Or you could look at your recently installed apps....I know a lot of apps/developers that do it. Usually they're free versions of games that do it, and I've also seen products from the GO developers that like to advertise their apps whenever they get the chance. Some apps will let you turn off all notifications as well...if you go to Settings->Applications->Manage Applications-> and look at the Downloaded tab, you can scroll through and see what app may be doing it

Thanks for the heads-up. Got my first notification spam today. I had this app installed. Note emphasis on "had"; it's gone now. Left a 1-star review and comment before uninstalling.
I started getting these ads and found this thread. I had installed Go Launcher (someone mentioned Go apps, above). If I uninstall the app do the notifications go with it? I'm hoping it hasn't installed some malware-esque thing on my phone.
*edit* I used the ad detector app and found out it was, in fact, a Go Launcher theme.

I came from the gs2 where when u pressed the home button it gave u an option to kill certain tasks while leaving others open. If you double tap home it will bring up your recent apps. You can swipe them away, but task managers are not really needed.

As usual, the best recommendation for task killers is: DO NOT use one.
Task killers almost always cause more battery usage and slower performance, just because they force your phone to reload an app every single time you open it. Some people seem to believe that just because an app is in RAM, it's using battery, and that's outright false. It's suspended in RAM, doing absolutely nothing, waiting for you to use it again.
The only apps that actually run in the background are apps that have services (Facebook, Spotify, etc), apps that do things in the background. Killing these tasks isn't even a good idea, as Android will attempt to restart killed services.

Here is a blog post written by a member of the Android team explaining how multi-tasking works on Android and why task killers actually hurt performance and battery life. Don't use them. They're counter productive.
There is an app in the play store called Grennify. It's kinda like a task killer. The short of it is that you select apps to be Greenfied. The selected apps don't run in the background while your phone is in sleep mode. I've been using this app since I had my S3 and IMO, is a must have app for root users.

I am using Xperia SP (Indian version) C5302 Build No. 12.0.A.1.1211 Didnt update so far.
My problem is that the multitask feature is kinda like the old iPhones. When i switch apps, the previous app is terminated or loads from beginning.
For example.
I was surfing facebook from Chrome browser. I received a text. I checked my txt, replied, and when i switched back to Chrome browser the webpage started loading afresh. Is ONE webpage of Facebook too much for the "last year flagship defeater"???
While playing games,like Little Empire (online game) i was referring to online guide. So i switched to Chrome browser to see the instructions on how to defeat a boss stage. When i switched back to Little Empire the app booted from beginning. I mean wtf!! How am i supposed to refer to guides if the moment i minimize the game it switches off.
The phone has 1 GB RAM. What is the point of multitasking when apps dont really multitask. The moment u minimise its gone.
Now this doesnt happen all the time.
When i play Need For Speed Most Wanted, a game which is pretty demanding, it never closes. Even after i switch back to this game after texting , it resumes from pause menu.
Is there a way to make my phone multitask?
Some games don't work well with multitask, such as that random game you posted. Chrome is known to be ram intensive, and probably the only browser that causes launcher redraw. Use firefox instead.
If you don't like your phone, get something else...
I'm sorry bro but there's no way. The. Fact is that not our phone but android doesn't do full multitasking. Android keeps a program in memory only if the program demands it to. But even then it closes the program if another resource hogging program is loaded.

I was just wondering if converting a app into a System App might help. (And restart the phone)
For a game it is not very useful because it will be loaded at boot but for a Launcher it might help
that a third party launcher is less often redrawn. I think Android will kill non system apps first so the Launcher might stay in your ram longer.
Please correct me if I'm completely mistaken
In the free RAM 200M can not be used because the Sony locked
So always because of insufficient RAM to kill other processes
The pre allocated ram is used by debug file system, logger, camera pmem etc you can't change it unless you have custom kernel

Use "Greenify" for stop selected user app to running in background (facebook, maps...) and "Autokiller Memory Optimizer" to change minfree value (lmk). So instead to kill apps when your RAM goes under 200Mo, you can change the value to 50Mo. It's a great tool !

Tried it but didn't worked. It delays a little the closing but the app closing comes anyway.
Maybe 1 GB isn't really enough. Sad that ZR won't be sold in SG,

Once I had the same problem with Galaxy S3 too, but I was rooted it installed busybox PRO and RAM Manager PRO, and in RAM manager I choosed hard multtiasking, and voila no more problems with redraws, and I even tried to keep opened NFS Most Wanted, and to open some more apps, and I found everything what I left,so 1GB isn't too little, it's Android memory management problem I think.
And also delete bloatware,because some sh*t is memory hungry and can cause this problem too

Man, have u tried enabling Swap? If you have, is there any significant improvement in performance? There's a caution in the software that Swap will make my SD card degrade. I'm so confused with this
