anyone notice a difference in these?
My reception sucks around work while at&t gets full bars.
Other VW users have low, but doable coverage for video streaming, downloads, etc... (2-3 bars 3G) however this was from a droid x and droid 2 which i'm assuming both have a more sophisticated antenna?
i get about 1 bar of 3G sometimes but overall it frequently drops out or goes to 1x.
I manually upgraded from C-01.43.01P to 03, and have gotten a slightly better connection but worse download speeds then before when i do have sufficient coverage. I've gone through a lot of roms and even with the most stable, my data struggles when i'm at work.
Anyone find a way to improve reception and data speed with a good combo of baseband/rom/kernel?

I seem to notice better signal strength with certain ROMs, is this placebo? Do you guys notice this as well?
WHICH RADIO DO YOU GUYS USE ON THE G1?
I updated to the latest and it seems to be good sometimes... and piss poor other times. At my desk at work, I get ZERO data frequently (followed by 2 bars 3G or Edge). That is absurd.
Has anyone noticed improved signal with one radio over another?
There was a discussion on the nexus forums about undervolt kernels affecting signal strenght but I don't remember what the outcome was. Theory was that less power to radio=less signal strenght, so that might be a culprit. Other then that I can't think of anyway that a rom would be slower at internet then another lol.
^ yeah... admittedly it could be placebo, but I do seem to have better luck with certain ROMs.
Any idea about the radio's and if one is actually preferred?
I have a brand new Nexus One, the T-Mobile version. According to the coverage map, I'm in a Very Good voice coverage area and 4g Very Good data coverage area. I've never used T-Mobile before though, so I don't know typical signal strengths in and around my house.
I'm on a Pay As You Go plan with Web DayPass. I can get the phone to go into 3G mode but it only has 0-1 bars. On Edge it ranges between 2-4. I know there were 3G issues at launch but I thought they were resolved.
Is there some secret to making this work?
Just because a map says that you have good signal, doesn't mean you will actually get one.
Those maps are calculated based on some equations and formulas and so forth, rather than test every square inch for signal strength. Plus, I don't think they guarantee in-building coverage to be the same as outside.
You should probably try being close to a window to see if it improves. Another suggestion is to hold the phone by its sides rather than grasp it at the bottom. The phone's antennas are in the bottom of the phone.
I'm just trying to see if the phone might be the problem. The issues I'm having are the same as all the ones reported at launch. However all I can find are reports on that issue from a year ago, nothing about how/if it was fixed.
I don't know if it really matters but it's not like I'm on the edge of good coverage. There is Good - Excellent voice coverage and Very Fast Mobile Web coverage 20+ miles in all directions.
I can hold the phone perfectly still and Edge coverage will fluctuate between 2-4 bars. If I get 3G, it's typically 0-1 bars though I have been able to get 2 bars once.
i recently unlocked, rooted and s-off my htc one, on stock i used to get around 5/4 signal bars and now i only get two/three.
im currently running trickdroid 7.5 rom 4.2.2.
so im looking for a radio which would work for orange/EE in the UK.
please can someone help, or point me into the right direction
this is the one for the 4.2.2 firmware

Are you sure that it is not the same level? Don't be fooled by the bar looking different, remember that it might show 2 bars of LTE but that could still be better than 5 bars of H+ (as an example).
So if you used to get 5 bars of 3G but your now getting 2 bars of H or H+ then you are better off even though its less bars.
Please do not take this as me treating you as if you are stupid, I am not, I have come across a lot of people recently who thought the same, and it turned out to just be a different type of signal.
fixed
okk i just flashed 1.29.401.12 Radio and it's back to normal.
i found it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2245615

thanks for the input but!
i never said i was using my data connection,
Same principle applies even with data off.

So if I have 5 bars when set to "GSM" only but 2-3 when set to "GSM/CDMA" .. that's as good?
I'm being serious btw, I normally set mine to just GSM as I seemed to have more signal but if there isn't any point then I won't bother lol ..I'm in the UK btw and on a network that doesn't support LTE (I think)

You can confirm the 'type' of signal you are getting at any time in the menu > settings > about part of the phone.
Your phone will automatically switch to whatever the best signal is available at any time, you don't really need to change your GSM/WCDMA settings, unless you really want to force it away from 3G connections (again this does not mean you have to have data turned on).
Cool, I'm not too fussed about what data type it uses as I rarely have data turned on, I just naturally assumed that by switching it from GSM'CDMA Auto to just GSM, meant that I'd have better reception, being that the signal bars went from 2/5 to 5/5 ... You learn something new everyday lol
EDIT: I checked my signal, and I mean my reception, not the data connection type, when switched between GSM/WCDMA Auto and GSM Only and there is a huge difference. I found this guide:
dB Signal - A basic guide
-50 to -60 (very strong, near a cell tower)
-60 to -70 (extremely good, rare)
-80 to -85 (normal downtown)
-90 to -95 (getting on the weak side)
-95 to -98 (weak, dropping calls)
-98 to -100 (bad, hard to stay connected)
-100+ (basically no usable signal)
When I set my phone to GSM Only I hover around -70, which is good, when I switch to GSM/WCDMA Auto it is a different story. I know it changes and finds the best signal, which I might add drains more battery on an already power hungry beast, but I was hovering at -100 which is terrible and often calls were dropping or people were saying it was engaged when infact I hadn't used it.
It's clear to me that in my case, GSM Only is the far better option if I actually want to use my phone to make calls ... Data speeds I'm not arsed about so EDGE is just fine with me.
Does anyone notices unstable signal bars on this phone? Same spot, same mobile network, my pixel 2 xl gets full bar while xz2 only hover around 1-3 bars.
This may also contribute to mediocre battery life I've been having. My mix 2s (sd845) certainly fares better in that department.
I can only compare it to Z5 on same location(basement,) which had none or 1 bar signal and no lte/4g, now i have 1-2 bars and lte/4g on xz2
I have the same issue. But it's everywhere. Not just in limited areas. Sometimes, I have LTE+ and next thing you know, it just says LTE with full bars but to internet. It's been doing that all day. might need a new SIM so I'm going to T-Mobile today.
Maybe it is a software related problem.
I had the same problem on LineageOS 14.1 and 15.1 on my Nexus 6, too.
i have the same issue with my xz2, the LTE network is unstable , sometime it goes to 1 bar or no HSPA instead of 4g , is it hardware or software issue ?
I've just tested a z3, xz2 and p8 lite 2017.
At home, weak signal sometimes, p8 has 4 bars, z3 3 bars and xz2 jumping between 1 and 2 bars.
At work, strong signal, p8 4 bars again, z3 jumping between 3 and 4 bars, xz2 2 bars and switching between 4g and 3g a lot.
Really hope they sort this.
Actually, my signal have always been pretty stable, coming from Z3. When I say stable, I mean 3 bars at LTE (4G reception in my location is still not that good, this is the location's fault, tbh). I got 1 to 2 bar(s) at LTE with my Z3.
I have noticed the opposite. My XZ2 has more stable 4G than other phones in my household consisting of iphones and samsungs and its way better than my previous xiaomi.
I get the feeling that the XZ2's signal bar is showing the signal quality rather than the signal strength. For example, when I'm in a congested area I can see that in apps like Cellmapper I have a strong signal to the nearby mast, but the signal quality is poor due to the high number of users and interference.
Overall, it is better to show the quality of the signal rather than the strength. Ultimately it's the quality that has the most impact on data speeds.
I have better reception on LTE/4g on the XZ2 than I do on my Nexus 5X, that sits around 2-3 bars and the XZ2 is constantly on 4 bars...so no complaints here ?
Same problem with my XZ2C
I get 2 bars on average on my XZ2 Compact. But it's very jumpy. When i take it out of my pocket it goes from 1 to 2 bars. No problem with other phones.
Signal Quality Issues here too
Have had my XZ2 for a couple of months and yes, signal issues galore. I commute for work on same highway almost every day and know where I would get some signal issues with my previous samsung phone but with sony its everywhere..even when I'm home its unpredictable. Sometimes I just get a voice message indicator but I did not hear it ring at all. I am aware that not all signal issues are the phones fault..the provider also is not perfect at times but I just cant help to compare it with my previous phones (many brands) and Sony falls short in that area... I was very optimistic being a nice top-tier phone, great pictures and video, the included software is not bad either, great sound from internal speakers including a nice display but fails to deliver on its most primal and basic function...voice calls. Will keep waiting for that much awaited OTA upgrade where Sony tends to this signal issue problem. If not, its off to craiglist.
I actually have an unlocked S8 on Verizon, but I think the question is generally applicable to all of the firmware versions.
I recently switched from AT&T to Verizon. While the switch has been great in general, it has lead to low signal in our basement where my office is located. While calls/texts seem to work in the basement, I'm noticing reduced battery life due to the reduced signal.
I picked up a (3G) Network Extender to try to improve the situation, but it seems to behave differently than I would have expected. I wasn't thrilled to have to disable VOLTE in order to use the extender at all (since it isn't the LTE version), but the bigger issue is that it *seems* like the device is still using the cell towers except when there is an actual incoming or outgoing call. Is that correct? What does that mean from a battery usage perspective?
In the end, I'm trying to figure out whether there is any real value in using the extender if it doesn't improve battery life? Can anyone comment?
Thanks,
Craig

The 3G extender only routes when there is data going to or from your phone (phone calls). You should see a little icon indicating that you are connecting to the extender. I had 2 of the 3G extenders, neither did anything to help my cellphone battery. I also had continuing issues with losing the GPS sync signal almost daily, even with the external antenna connected and outside away from the house. Verizon has also said that they are "retiring " 3G at the end of 2019 in my area. I bought their new 4G extender, and it works like a miniature cell tower - phone is always connected to it when in range, and it does seem to help with the battery life. Data / messaging / VOLTE works *much* better. Best of all, GPS lock has been solid with no drops at all. If you bought the 3G extender from a Verizon store, take it back and get the 4G instead - works sooo much better!

This is good to know. I actually bought this off of EBay for cheap, so I can't easily swap it out. At that point, I didn't understand the behavior of the device and phone.
