Please help fixed my locked up phone. - Motorola Droid and Milestone General

Hello. I live in the U.S. and have a Motorola Milestone A854 made in China.
Yesterday I used z4 to give myself root access. It was so easy, I loved it. I was able to adjust my processor and install premium apps.
So my buddy who knows more about Android then me try's to walk me through installing a new rom because he said it would be so much better. (i was happy where I was at)
Right after it formatted what was currently on the phone it error'd out. Now I guess I have a phone with no operating system? I'm not sure. I cannot get passed the M.
I have ClockworkMod Recovery 2.5.0.1 installed.
Everytime I try to flash a new sbf file after it creates the image I get an error 1337 and 510b on my phone and the flashing process fails.
I just want to get back to having a working android again, I really do not care about mods and roms. I have two children on the other side of the country (i am in the service) that I have not been able to talk to and its killing me.
Please, if you can give me a hand. I'll be staring at this thread all day with my fingers crossed.

As far as I know the Milestone A854 is not able to run CWM.. What sbf are you trying to flash? Are you using RSDLite with the proper USB drivers?

Thank you for the reply! I have tried multiple SBF files all day. My buddy that broke my phone has been trying to help me fix it. I am using RSDLite 4.9 and yes I am using the proper USB drivers.
Is there any SBF files you recommend? Or any other process to get an android system back on my phone? I do not care about it being anything special, I would love to just go back to stock. I really don't care I just want to be able to talk to my family again.

Well, I'm wondering, have you been able to successfully flash an sbf?
Is your Milestone A854 really a Verizon Droid? Because if so, then you are able to use CWM.

Every time I try to flash a SBF I get a critical error message with the codes 1337 and 510B below it.
I purchased the phone through Alltel where they claimed it was a Milestone.
Under the battery it says Model: A854

If your phone is the A854, you MIGHT be able to flash one of these: http://www.and-developers.com/sbf:droid
But I don't know, I'm not sure about those SBF's so I suggest you wait until somebody else has some more experience with the A854 than me.

Ok, well thanks a ton for the help and the information so far!!

I don't think it's a Verizon Droid Skadude. Based from twitrax's description, it seems to be an Alltel Milestone.
So the SBF's that he should try should be the Milestone Eclair SBF's or the Milestone Froyo SBF's.
@twitrax: Once your phone is off, can you still access the Milestone bootlader?
Also, can you access the recovery menu?
bootloader menu = (from off state) Hold up direction in the navi key, then turn phone on.
recovery menu = (from off state) Hold "x" key, then turn phone on.

Well, that could be your problem. Clockworkmod never works with the milestone. Do you have a nandroid backup with you?

The good news is, I think you are on a bootloader locked Milestone and it's very very difficult to brick it.
Please tell us what you see in your bootloader menu. (It should be just a few lines of text.)
And silesh is right, the Milestone is a unique creature. CWM does now work on it. It will simply mess up your phone. (Supposedly very fixable though.)
@silesh: The A854 is CDMA.

you guys are awesome thanks for the help!

Any errors shown on bootloader screen? Which rom were you flashing when you got into trouble.
And clockwork recovery works on your phone. It does not work with A853, which is the milestone that i was referring to.

Ok. Now that i know for sure what your phone is, the method i was going to post will not work for you.
Wait till i find a nandroid backup of the stock Altel milestone A854 for you. Once i send you the link, you will need to flash it using the nandroid restore option on your clockwork recovery menu.

[How To] Downgrade 2.2 To 2.1

Not sure if this has already been posted somewhere, but after my experience I figured it might be useful to someone. If it's been posted already ignore this and move on with your day/night
1. flash sbf
2. phone will go in the boot loop of death, thats fine lol.. when rsdlite says 100 percent pull the battery
3. put the battery back in, hold down the home button plus the power button till you see the moto logo followed by the triangle
4. hit search button, your now in recovery
5. do a factory restore
6. once complete reboot phone
7. thank god and swear you wont flash your phone ever again (ofcourse only to do it in a day or so after you have calmed down)
rsdlite and sbf can be found in this thread CLICK
If you made a nandroid backup of 2.1 couldn't you just restore that? I'm pretty sure you can. I remember doing it with the Moto Droid.

Do not restore a 2. 1 nandroid in 2. 2. The update changes the bootloader and recovery versions which aren't part of the backup. The phone will just hang at the MOTO logo. I learned this the hard way. You have to use the sbf. You can then apply your nandroid to get everything back.

what i meant by my experience was downgrading 2.2 to 2.1, My g/f has the droid x, and i am the one to root or mod her phone for her. She wanted to try out froyo and liked the rom alot. there are little bugs i noticed
1. odd little animation hiccup when scrolling home screens
2. lag in gallery
3. what seemed like market delay (but the market has been slow lately, same thing on my vibrant and g1)
but this is a test build not a "final rom"
Like i said downgrading the phone is a little different than other android phones Ive used and i thought this post may help someone out. Im the type of person who wont mod something unless i know i can get back to where i started and with this sbf and "how to" you wont have to worry about that.

also i believe it updates the radio and kernel.. thanks pj for explaining that
If I wanted to go to 2.1 ,don't see why...at the moment.
Before I do a SBF would it be ok to to do a data wipe and a partition wipe in recovery mode then do the SBF bootrecovery deal???
Thank You
after you upgrade to 2.2 koush has a new DroidXBootstrap.apk out
go back to his website and DL it and reinstall then rerun bootstrap.
after that rom manager can do backups or recoveries.
sucks you all get bootloop with sbf, ive done it twice now and has worked fine
keeps all my apps and stuff
goodluck

I'm kinda confused what you mean? I did a nandroid backup of 2.1 with the latest bootstrap and clockworld.
I just remember using a nandroid on my girl's moto droid and I went from 2.2 all the way back to 2.0.1.
when trying to sbf on my Mac I get this -bash: ./sbf_flash: Permission denied? Any suggestions I have been asking for 2 days now hopefully someone can help. Thanks

I also did the same from my Eris. The major difference is that the recovery on those devices were completely replaced not just patched. When you restore a 2.1 nandroid from a 2.2 droid x the android 3e recovery is not replaced. When the system tries to boot it sees that as an invalid recovery image and won't boot, it just hangs at the moto logo forever. When you upgarde to 2.2 on a Droid or an Eris your still using clockwork recovery or amon ra's recovery and not upgrading to the android 3e system recovery. Maybe it was just a fluke that it didn't work for me but it makes sense as to why it would fail, otherwise we would be able to have a full custom recovery.

From my understanding sbf_flash is for linux only. To flash on mac you need to use rsd lite with a virtual windows os.
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-hacks/38671-flashing-sbf-mac.html
i cant get my phone to flash. i have done this 2 before with my droid x on 2.1 but now that i am on 2.2 every time i try to use RSDlite, i connect my phone and select my SBF but the START button will not light up so i cannot proceed. any thoughts.. im running windows 7 64 and i have all the drivers working for my phone.
failed sbf flash
Hey guys, i got an error in RSD that says "Failed flashing process. Failed flashing process. Phone[0000]: Phone is not compatible with muli-interface super-file. (0x703B); phone connected
Any ideas, i'm really new to android stuff, been using WM forever.
Thanks for the help

Update July 23 2011: Full sbf for ATT users available. This sbf includes root in preinstall (don't ask questions, read the post in this link) and pudding pre-loaded. Look for the file with the other pudding files below. Thanks to WiredNix and Brandon15811 for helping find the original sbf, and WiredNix for testing.
Update July 19th 2011: Pudding has been updated to fix memory timing issues that gizmo noticed, thank you eval- for the fix. All ATT users should update pudding. Bell users have updated pudding as well, but memory timing fix is included in the 300mb RAM fix. Who does/doesn't need this.
You need this if:
1) You need to flash custom single partitions such as system, osh, boot.img, recovery, or data.
2) Mainly for testing custom kernels, see number one.
3) You have a real ROM with a custom kernel, like CM7 or MIUI, and want to flash it.
You don't need this if:
1) Number one in the last section doesn't make any sense to you or sounds like gibberish.
2) You wanna show your friends how much cooler or better than them you are.
3) You just want to install P-ROMs and Themes.

This is a development thread.
Let's keep the 'thanks', 'I'm downloading' and jokes out, as we need to keep the contents relevant. If you want to show thanks, use the thanks button under the first post, or donate to the2dcour!
Let's also keep discussions about ROMs (GB, 2.3.4, CM7, ASOP, etc) out of this thread, as this thread is about a unlocked bootloader.
FAQ:
Will this give me Gingerbread or 2.3.4?:
This is a custom boot image to enable you to flash any custom ROM. This by itself will not give you 2.3.4. You'll need to find another thread for that.
How to tell if you're still unlocked:

Your phone is still unlocked. Flash a newer (leaked!) bootloader and you will see the "Unlocked" again. No knowing whether we can re-lock, notice:
Code:
$ sudo ./moto-fastboot oem lock
... INFOOEM lock is not implemented
Since we haven't determined the implementation, it could well be this process is irreversible, as they claim.

Motoblur?:
Motoblur will still be there after you flash this unlock.
Do I have to unlock?:
As of 6/29/11, there are a limited amount of ROMs out and if you look around the forums, they require alot of fixes. If you have the time and patience, feel free to unlock...
Can I overclock?:
This is a new boot image, not a kernel. A custom kernel with the ability to change frequencies as a compiler option is required for overclocking.
I can't get moto-fastboot to work?
This could be because of:
Improper paths due to lack of understanding of how DOS works (see this primer)
missing USB drivers (try installing RSD Lite first)
If these fail to help you, look in the Questions and Answers forums..
Couldn't resist it
But seriously, only a teaser pic on a dev topic is very lame IMO, how about some info about it?
The2dCour is a known troll.
And here's a video of unlocking it by Briefmobile. BTW I hate them. How did they get the 2.3.3 build? And I bet they're scared to leak it because they want to keep it to themselves for all the attention it's getting them...so can anyone explain how they got it?
Anyone test this out with OLYEM_U4_2.1.1??
I would like to but I'm strapped for time and the wife would kill me. Got a dinner to go to and I'm sitting here drenched in my workout clothes and dancing on the spot.

Sorry for the noob questions but, will we still be able to get regular OTA updates if we flash this? If I flash an old SBF does this re-lock the bootloader or is this forever?

It should not lock you out of OTA updates. and I believe it is forever. However, if you flash back to stock 1.8.3 it will no longer display unlocked.

Yeah, saw that it screwed with gingerblur a bit too... I just re-flashed v4.5, and then my custom framework-res.apk, good to go now... at least till be get some true roms out.
Only thing I'm noticing of any concern is that my home button is not working... it vibrates on press just fine, but nothing happens when I press it???? Huummm... Anyone else?
Oh, and ariplane mode and something else (can't remember) are missing from the power off notification area; only power off and reboot are there now.

Little help

greetings,
I had the brilliant idea of flashing my droid 3, but now I'm stuck on a black screen:
AP Fastboot Flash Mode (S) (Flash Failure)
0A.40
Battery OK
OK to Program
Connect USB
Data Cable
I used RSD Lite to flash, but it just shows
Failed flashing process. 1/18 (...) result FAIL
I'm trying to update with CW, but it stuck after the 'press menu' page
someone knows how to unbrick my phone?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1336980
if youre trying to update through CW, you shouldnt need to use RSD. Since you have used RSD, you need to make sure you have the correct SBF. Im not sure if the Milestone 3/??Model# has an SBF! You will need to sbf (with RSD) and (probably) clear cache (through recovery m+power)
thank U vry much!
giving a try
as soon I get some results, I'll post here

oh..you have the XT860? In this topic http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=19784171 they're saying you can make nandroid backups now...I guess you didn't?
I'm not really up to date with XT860 news (there's still no subforum) but you could try flash the http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1288823.
I don't know if there's an official SBF for XT860 yet
when i saw the flag in your profile, i figured you werent using our XT862. I did a couple searches but didnt come up with anything but a system dump
I did...
bot even the backup stuck....
when I boot with + and - volume buttons pressed, I can navigate to 'Normal Powerup'
then appears the CW window, where I made the backup, but when I try to restore and reboot, it keeps stucking....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=17419746&postcount=81
check out this thread, not just post 81. this guy said he tried flashing the xt862 rom to his xt860 and bricked like you. ive never had to fastboot the /preinstall partition (??), but you may find more information if you dig a little deeper. hope that helps
guys,
my greatest THANKS!
after this little time and this little help I can yell:
IT'S ALIVE!! \o/
I almost lost (another) mobile on flash (frist a Motorola v360, then a Palm Treo Pro 850)
on other hand.... it's on CHINESE!!!
but I think I can handle that..... or at least try to....
awesome. i was worried because motorola marketed two phones as the XT860, which is Bell Canada, and Vivo Brazil. everything ive checked out was for the Bell version (even though they could be the exact same base)
now, I'll try to root again, install CW and restore my backup...
wish me luck =P
thinking better....
this whole confusion started because my droid was too slow.... (I guess it's because motoblur) and restore the backup will only help to mess up with my head again
If you're on the me863 rom now thenone click root won't work, there is a link to a working root method in the me863 thread in the Droid 3 android dev forum

DROID 4 Utility Pre-Release [WINDOWS]

UPDATED PAGE!
Back with another utility... this time pre-release Droid 4! I haven't seen a Droid 4 board yet so I guess I have to put this under General.
There are no fastboot files as of writing this (2/11/2012) but once they come out I will be making a full version that includes fastboot restore. For now, only a few MB compared to GB full.
Includes Root function thanks to Dan Rosenberg's motofail exploit.
It is the only reason we can have a working utility root!
Donate to his fund for the Red Cross here
Note to all: I am giving control of the Droid 4 Utility to skylarmb (Although I will still be very involved )
Don't use Safestrap yet!
Hashcode is making a D4 version very soon!

Removed Safestrap until D4 version released.
Added Overclock install. See guide here (Overclocking Your Droid Razr - DroidRzr.com)

Used "Ultra" .zip compression.
Enjoy~!

And if anyone could do a system pull and send me a copy over a file-share site like mediafire or minu.us that would be very helpful to me. Thanks
EDIT: Nvm. I got one.
What do the different options do? I went from having a OG Droid, with cyanogenmod which was super straight forward to this and I have no idea what the fastboot or bootstrapping does.
If you still need the /system pull I can send you the link over PM.

Bootstrap is the way to get into a CWM-like recovery for the Razr. I have no way to test this on a D4, seeing as I don't have one.
ICS root works on the GSM ICS leak, so it may work for ours too.
Boot into Fastboot from Debugging (go directly to fastboot mode from the phone turned on and in USB Debugging mode)
Boot into Motorola Recovery from Debugging (same as above but into Moto Recovery)
ADB Shell (for more manually inclined users)
Reboot phone from Debugging
I have ADB 1.0.26 (at least that is what it says when I go to Start>Run>CMD>and type in adb.
Is there anything else I need to get the phone rooted? Any other drivers or anything along those lines. I know the phone needs to be in development mode, but I want to make sure all of the other software on the computer end is up-to-date since I've had a G1, Mytouch Slide 3G, G2, and Droid 3 before picking up this Droid 4.

I think most people use the one they use with CM.
code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
This one I think. You have to install via the APK.
Please correct me if there is a different one of this is the wrong one. I'm actually curious myself.
I have no technical explanation for this, but...
DO NOT RUN THE .BAT FILE AS ADMINISTRATOR.
If I right-click the .bat file and click "run as administrator" in Windows 7, everything would appear to work (at least to the splash screen), but when I selected option 1 it would come back with a bunch of lines of "the system cannot find the path specified."
When I just double clicked the .bat file it ran properly and am now set.
Again, I have no idea why it worked this way, but it did...at least on my system. Windows 7 64-bit here, btw.

I was wondering the same thing, if the RadioCom Tether Hack worked. But I tried to enable the tether on the phone, and Verizon pops up a message as long as I have a $29.95 data plan then I can tether. So I went forward and enabled teather since I have the unlimited plan, and all seems well. I went to My Verizon web and checked to see if I'm being charged, or if another service has been added, and I see non. So I will try using this for now.
Thank you XDA for putting my Utility on the front page =D
So I used the utility to root my droid 4, but I did not install the safe strap. At this point I do not plan on doing any flashing or even heavy customization. I just wanted root for install of wifi tether and titanium backup. Is there a need for safestrap before I plan on getting into flashing etc?

bricked my droid 4... for now...
I'm pretty pissed at my self... I softbricked my droid 4 days after i got it... now im just waiting for the fastboot restore option... I'll be checking back here every day now lol... does anyone know when it will be released, or is it even a guarantee it'll be released?
How did this happen? Best of luck on getting it fixed!

Well i had success using the droid razr utility before this one came out (of course cant fastboot recovery with it tho ), so i thought maybe the EternityProject WebTop Mod would work, so i tried installing it through adb and i went to do the 2nd step and found out webtop was disabled... I figure i did something wrong... so i went to restore the backup i made and all of the sudden its stuck in AP fastboot saying flash failure.
This really sucks cause i bought the lapdock 500 to go with the phone. Now I have 2 bricks sitting on my desk, until further notice.
I since i have insurance on this phone I am putting the phone up for sale on craigslist with an hdmi cable so someone can enjoy a small android tab and webtop if they want it for 120... anyone think I'll be able to sell it before the fastboot recovery is released?
Quick question....If I do a system pull and then try to throw a few things from UOT kitchen like battery percent.....would that work without the files being deodexed?

Got totally Screwed updating my rooted X with 4.4.4

I am not a pro like you guys, but when I bought my unlocked "X Developers Edition 1053" from USA, I could not resist unlocking its bootloader and rooting it.
However I never tried to change the stock ROM, and used my rooted phone for some great apps
But Two days ago, my Phone which was on 4.4.3 got an update to 4.4.4 And I thought why not its just 15 MB update, lets do it.
Wish I would'nt have done that, coz I read somewhere that a rooted phone should not be updated, and now it just shows me the Moto startup Animation for a few seconds and shutdown.
I STFW but got too many ways and I got confused, thought It would be best not to **** my phone with any wild solutions and make problem worse.
I tried starting the phone in fastboot/recovery mode it does go into that mode, when I press Lock and Power Up/Down keys together, and I tried all options in it except "Factory" option, but nothing happens.
So this is it guys, am I really screwed in a big way, or is there any hope for me :crying:
Please help me, even a direction to proper way would also mean a lot.

You have a custom recovery i assume?
You can try clearing just cache and dalvik. If that doesn't work, May have to clear data too....all your apps and data will be gone though. Not your pics and internal SD stuff though, that will be untouched.
---------- Post added at 09:25 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:24 AM ----------
Next step is see what bootloader version it shows now. If it's still 4.4.3....You can flash the 4.4.3 factory image to get back and running.
Don't downgrade though....that could brick you.
Removed Cache but now: Fastboot Reason Sticky bit factory _fastboot
After applying the following command:
fastboot erase cache
It now gives me error:
Fastboot Reason Sticky bit factory _fastboot
and nothing happens.
I checked moto's website for my framework 4.4.3, but it isn't listed there Firmware till 4.4.2 is only listed there, is it ok to flash this version ?
No, it's not. If you downgrade you can/will likely brick. Now or later.

If you're giving up trying to save your data and just want your phone back, and if you're sure you have the xt1053, and you're sure 4.4.3 is what you want, then follow the guide here: http://www.theandroidsoul.com/back-...to-x-xt1053-to-android-4-4-3-kitkat-firmware/
if you wanna save data you might hold off in case anyone else has any ideas.
in the future always make a nandroid backup of your android device asap and after each ota update. you do that from the custom recovery that you installed, and save a copy off your device, on a computer or hd. speaking of the custom recovery, after you make the nandroid and flash superSU, if you're not using it regularly then it's probably better to flash back stock recovery. from what I understand it is not having root that's causing problems with OTA updates, it's the custom recovery. So if you keep it stock you don't have to remember to flash back for OTA, while still enjoying the benefits of root. the OTA will break your root, but since you're unlocked anyway you just have to go through it after each ota and you're golden.

According to gsmarena moto x is
Available as:
Motorola Moto X XT1058 for AT&T
Motorola Moto X XT1053 for T-Mobile
Motorola Moto X XT1052 for Europe
Motorola Moto X XT1056 for Sprint
Motorola Moto X XT1060 for Verizon
Motorola Moto X XT1055 for U.S. Cellular
To my mind XT1053 should be the same whatever it's called T-Mobile or developer, only difference being in the fine print where one voids your warranty for unlocking and the other doesn't. but you might wanna confirm that.
As for the link, guess it's down. but the main thing is the firmware exists online.

The unlocked GSM Moto X dev ed is the exact same phone as the TMobile Moto X - they are both XT1053 - so you use the TMobile SBF for the unlocked GSM dev ed.
Right now the SBF firmware site is down so you are going to have to wait until they get it back up. The site is not working for anyone right now.
Also keep in mind that since you bought directly from Motorola, you have a 1 year warranty on the device and since it is a dev ed, the warranty was not voided when you unlocked it. So if worse comes to worse, you can return for a warranty replacement as long as you are still within 1 year of purchase.

I don't use CWM so I would have to look it up myself. I use TWRP. You can probably find out how to do it through CWM's website.
Once you figure it out, make a nandroid and keep a copy on your PC. Then flash the 4.4.4 sbf. Then install a custom recovery, root 4.4.4 and install Titanium back up. Then extract your data from the nandroid using TiBU.
At this point, you should do some reading. It's obvious you have no idea what you're doing. Stop now before you screw your phone up any further.
Thanks nhizzat and wansanta, Will do some search on nandroid for sure.
Ok, So as you guys have given me a ray of hope. I am checking the ways by which I can save my data.

I created a backup from CWM, but it will be placed in Phone's internal memory right ? So when I flash my phone with TMobile ROM, wouldn't it erase the backup file too?

Again I don't use CWMR so I can't tell you how that works. With TWRP, the backups are in a folder labeled TWRP. You just connect your phone to your PC and copy that folder to your PC.
