So I'm trying the 1.2 update to give it a fair shake, and I have one big complaint about the way B&N chooses to do apps. To get any app, even free ones, it appears you need to have payment info in your account. For paid apps, that makes sense, but for free apps? No other major app store does this. I just don't like giving CC info out if I don't have to (especially after the recent PSN debacle). Just wanted to share my experience.
Not only that, but why aren't any games free?

Amazon app store works the same way
Sent from my SPH-D700
It is same way for Amazon (need to have 1 click enabled - It is annoying that I get invoices e-mailed to me the minute I buy that $0 app of the day).
I believe it works the same way for B&N Book purchases, even for free books, you need to have valid CC account with them.
I guess I never thought aboutthe Amazon app store. They had my info long before they had an app store. I am surprised that iTunes lets me go CC-less.
B&N requires a credit card for all Nook transactions. Including book and app purchases. Even if you have valid gift cards on your account they still need the credit card. Ghetto, but its life.
If you don't want to give your real credit card, I'd just buy a gift CC and add gift cards as your real payment. that way It'll use up the gift, and then the cc. Not the cheapest and fastest route, but its a secure option.
Apparently B&N does not allow app developers to subsidize the cost of their apps through advertising. That's why very little is free.
I don't see it as a huge deal, honestly. While i have yet to update to 1.2, it doesn't sound like apps are outrageously expensive. $2.99 for Angry Birds? I probably paid $29.99 for Lemmings, which was the 1990's version of Angry Birds, when that came out.
Yeah, I had to supply a credit card for the B&N store when configuring the stock Nook Color (before the new upgrade with apps); I didn't think we had a choice.
I used a "disposable" credit card number with a low dollar limit (via the "ShopSafe" credit card generator).
I was very pleasantly surprised that the Google Apps store on Android has no such requirement. I wonder how much success the B&N app store will ever have.

I had my family buy a bunch of google play gift cards for my son for Christmas.
We've been purchasing apps without a problem until today. I went to purchase Greedy Spiders for $0.99 and I could not use the Google Play gift cards. The card was greyed out with a message right below the cards stating "This payment method has been declined.", but noting a balance of $12.05.
I called Google Play support and had to go through 3 calls and 6 support reps before one finally addressed the problem. The developer of the app is not allowing payment using Google Play gift cards. The developer of the app only accepts payment by credit card. This seems crazy to me. It's kinda like going to BestBuy and being unable to use BestBuy gift cards to buy a Sony TV because Sony only accepts credit card payment.
I'm not sure how many other developers are not accepting Google Play as a payment method, but I wanted to share the story.

yep. Aren't those gift cards supposed to help protect you from compromising your personal information online? ID theft is a pretty huge problem nowdays. I would be wary of doing business with that developer....
While I'm certain this vendor is the exception to the majority as I've had an Android phone for years and never experienced this, there will always be some vendors unless Google changes their policies to prevent developers from doing this. IMHO, I blame Google more than anyone. Google should not be providing developers the option to exclude Google Play gift cards when developers sell their products through the Google Play store.
I just came across this issue too but it seems to be for EVERY app or movie i have tried to download. I have a google play balance of $85 that seems to be utterly useless now! I need to do more research into this because this is just not acceptable and i feel extremely cheated. This is the first thread i came across so thought i would share my experience. If anyone has any input or an alternate reason as to why i can no longet use my play credit to make purchases i would be very interested to know.
Well with respect, Google Play is more like Amazon or EBay as such they allow anyone to write an app and publish it. And since Google is a world wide service, some countries may not or be able to accept that gift card service.
It happens but it is rare. We dealt with this with the initial $25 Play Store credit we got with our Nexus 7s. A very few developers wouldn't/couldn't accept the Gift Cards...
Or maybe it is a time factor. Maybe the listings have to be updated to accept gift cards?
I don't see a huge issue with this. I personally like the idea that devs can choose their method of choice.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium HD app
My problem with that is that i cant find a single app, movie, or song i can download with my play store balance. If there is NO devs that are going to accept gift cards as payment then Google needs to reimburse me for the money I already put out on their gift cards to download from their store which now seems to be completely void. If i knew i was going to be put in this position when i spent $150 on gift cards i would have never bought them. They claim on the card they are good for all purchases from the store apart from tangible products and when outside the US. I will be calling them tomorrow during business hours to bring this issue up.

I agree. When I got my N7, I had no problem using my $25. Seems fishy to me. It shouldn't matter if the money came from a gift card, green is green.
And I was just thinking about getting a gift card for the Play Store. After reading this though, maybe I should try something different.
Well now.. that is pretty retarded.

Hi, I know it's a bit late but I have just found a SOLUTION to this problem. You can solve this by creating another Gmail account and using the same payment method as this problem is not related to the the payment method but the account as I have found. Go into Settings>Accounts>Add Account>Google>New. Then create a new Google account which will work alongside your present Google account and NOT replace it. Go to the Play store and swipe right across the screen and you will see a drop down menu from your present Google account going into the Google account you just made. Use this new account to purchase the application. The application will be downloaded to your phone hopefully without your "payment method being declined" .
First I've heard of sellers even getting that opton. It's not on my developer console. How would the developer know anyway? The income isn't broken down by method of payment. nothing related on the merchant account either.
I suspect a glitch rather than anything deliberate.

App writers never see credit card information. Only the payment processor (in this case google) does.
I wasn't sure where I should put this, but since it's a great program for Android/Chromecast I figured here would be a good place.
If you have the Amazon App store you can get Plex for $0.99US or $1.09CDN depending on which store you use. For those of you who don't have it yet, it's basically a steal at this price. You should definitely jump on it!
Helps solve a lot of the local casting issues without a bunch of workarounds.

I notice the Amazon version is 3.2.9.113 whereas the play store is 3.2.11.118.
I don't buy apps from Amazon, but it's the same apps from the same developer, right? Amazon is just slower to update? If you buy from Amazon, does the phone recongnizes that there is a new version? And then update from google? Does it work that way? I guess what I'm asking is who's going to tell me I need an update? The Play Services or Amazon's own prompt?
Yeah it's the same devs. It is just Amazon that hosts the updates and not Google. So they may be a bit slower. It will work exactly the same way though.
You need to keep the amazon app store installed as that is where the program will update from.
The prompt etc. will all go through Amazon.

Thanks for the tip (button pushed)!
I've been holding off (re-)buying Plex on Amazon until the price came down. I've gotten so used to only buying buying an app once on my Android/Play devices. The thought of buying an app again just for the one Amazon Android variant device in my home pisses me off. Plex, however, is worth it to me. Now this gives me a way to easily allow the baby sitter to play movies for the kids.

Haha, yeah I hear ya.
I keep the Amazon app store kicking around because they toss in paid apps/games/bundles for free relatively often. It's not really different from the Play store except that it's Amazon and not Google. If I'm going to buy an app I'll generally use the Play store, but occasionally there will be deals (like Plex) on Amazon that are worth it and I don't mind jumping on.
Amazon is terrible with keeping apps up to date. I downloaded Magic 2014 there and purchased some in game content. Now it's still stuck on a version 10 months old that doesn't support new features or content. For $1 I'm less worried, but I would never spend real money there again.

I could be wrong here, but I'm pretty sure you can blame the developer for that. Developers have to submit their apps to each "store", generally Apple, Google, and then Amazon. If they neglect to do so in a timely manner, you get outdated apps.

Well.....Yes and No....
Even in cases where the Developer keeps both up to date the Amazon App does not automatically update you and will not always notify you of one until you run their App...
Google will almost always automatically update you to the latest version except at times where the permission requests have changed significantly enough to require manual accepting of the new permissions.
And if your flashing custom roms a lot the other thing about Amazon is that unless the app is installed it not only won't update but the license will expire until you log in to Amazon at least once after every flash.
While it's nice to save money for the $3 or $4 I prefer to get most (if not all) of my Apps from Google.
But I sure understand why people are willing to go through the extra hassle to save a few bucks in this economy.

I think there's more to it. Something is blocking developers from getting their updates submitted or approved in a timely fashion. Maybe there's a confidentiality agreement that explains why the details are not clear to the public, but for some reason even apps from reputable developers are chronically behind in updates on Amazon.

One of the main reasons I installed Amazon appstore on my various Nexus tablets and phones is for the daily free apps. I have over 500 + so far and some of them are quite good, including those I already bought from Google playstore: swype and switfkey, Runtastic pro, SketchBook pro, etc., and tons of games. And don't forget about the Amazon coins promotions. I have over 500 coins so getting Plex for 99 coins is a no brainer because its free!
Also I remember, a while back, having Android devices that don't include Google playstore nor is it supported. It's much easier to side-load Amazon appstore in such cases. Even with all that I still think Google Playstore is more refined and works great on Google "approved" devices. Amazon has been making some major improvements to the UI lately though.
With Amazon offering 5 free apps = 1000 Amazon coins ($10) for purchases from the Amazon App Store currently, you can get both Plex and Avia (in app upgrade) for free and still have plenty left over to get a game or two.
- You must buy through the Amazon App Store, using your U.S. account (Canadian account won't work)
- You have to "purchase" and download the 5 listed free apps, but you don't have to install them unless you want to
- You get 200 Amazon coins for each of them, arrives in your account within a minute or so
- You can then use the 1000 coins for buying apps or making in-app purchases up to $10 worth
Definitely works for Plex and the Avia in-app upgrade. AllCast not listed unfortunately (there's an AllCast for FireTV, so Amazon may consider the Chromecast version a competitor)
actually if you haven't already, use 700 of those coins to buy GTA and get an additional 2000 coins. this plus the info above left me with a bunch of free apps (which you don't have to install if you don't want) GTA which i believe is for Fire TV and therefore have no use for. plex, avia and $22 in coins to use for future purchases. Thanks for reminding me to try my US account and not just my canadian account. Thought I was SOL.
Amazon have lost their minds. With all the promos they're offering this weekend, I've so far downloaded 3 paid apps I wanted for free, and ended with $30 in app store credit to spend in future. Since you can start with a free download that gives you some credit, and then leverage that to give you back more credit than you spend, I bet with a little work you could end owning every app that Amazon offers and still have a $1 million credit!

Yes, these deals are infrequent. You are also correct - promotional/bonus coins expire after a year, but they are used before purchased coins when redeeming, so as long as you get something with coins every now and then, you will be fine.
But for some reason Amazon is giving away more coins than advertised at the moment. For example people buying GTA San Andreas for 699 coins are getting back 2500 coins instead of the advertised 2000. I bought a 99 cent app offering 30 coins back and got 200 coins instead. Ditto for other apps offering coins.
Yeah.. I saw that. Probably a bug. I evem bought one and the coins didn't change.
Nice find. Any other recommended apps? I am in Canada as well, just had to indicate a US address on account. Hope this does't spoil it. Had to purchase the San Adreas via PC but I don't have a kindal Worth for the bonus.
Looking to spend the rest of these coins too, any other apps recommended? Don't have too many via Amazon, picked up the Avia for sure or was it Plex, i dunno, i like free stuff.
Thanks OP and follows ups for the tips.
FYI i was using a VPN via phone to make purchases however, online just had to log into account.
So you just put a US address on your Canadian account and it worked?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Many of the Amazon app special offers are U.S.-only, and while Amazon coins are now supported in several countries, they aren't yet in Canada. But all you have to do to take advantage of these offers if you have an existing Canadian Amazon account is change the country in your account settings to United States, and give it any U.S. address (tip: you might want to choose a tax-free state, because taxes do apply to digital purchases). You don't have to use a VPN.
You could also create a separate U.S. Amazon account, but be aware that Amazon apps are DRM-restricted to one account. Every time an Amazon app runs on your Android device it checks the current Amazon account login on the device to make sure it matches (you will be prompted to log in if you are not currently logged in to Amazon). The app will refuse to run if the device is not logged in to the correct Amazon account. You can only be logged in to one account at a time. If you have some apps purchased through one Amazon account and some purchased another Amazon account, you will have to keep switching accounts to run them. There is no way to consolidate app purchases on different accounts. However apps purchased by one account with different countries selected at different times are fine because it's all one account. And you can use the same account and purchased apps on any number of devices.
Thanks for that breakdown. I had originally used my separate account for the US stuff and put that on my tablet. but getting my canadian account recognized was the better move. wish I had learned of this sooner but still took advantage of this promo.

Yep. Works great.
Keep in mind though, that a lot of retailers may show the "Tap 'n Pay" symbol, but they don't have it enabled, so it won't work. Retailers such as Best Buy, Home Depot, Wal-Mart, etc., are trying to start their own service (CurrentC), and have disabled "Tap 'n Pay" as a result. So, you can't take the symbol as a guarantee that Google Wallet will work. However, when it does, it's awesome. Hopefully, these other retailers will come to their senses, and allow "Tap 'n Pay" on their terminals eventually, especially with all of the recent bad press about retailers getting hacked, and credit card information leaking. Google Wallet, as with any "Tap 'n Pay" system (like Apple Pay) doesn't actually give the retailers the credit card information, just a transaction code, so it's a LOT safer, and you should use it whenever it's available. CurrentC wants to pull directly from your checking (which is the whole point -- the retailers are tying to avoid credit card fees), will need your checking account routing information, and won't offer the MasterCard protection that comes with "Tap 'n Pay." Imagine how screwed you'd be if your CHECKING account information get's hacked!
Even if you don't use Google Wallet, you should feel free to download CurrentC (the app is on the Google Play store) long enough to give it a 1-star review. Let these retailers know that this isn't the best way to do business.

Just keep in mind that the Wallet card is a bit different than the app. While the app can directly pull from any credit/debit card that you have added to your Wallet account, the physical card will ONLY pull from your Google Wallet balance. It requires that you transfer funds from your checking account or credit card manually prior to any transaction, and if your Google Wallet balance is lower than the transaction amount, the transaction will be denied.
I have a physical Google Wallet card, which I ordered the day they were announced, thinking it'd work like the app. I was very disappointed to find out the above, and it's literally sitting on a shelf unused. I use the app exclusively. I simply never keep a Google Wallet balance, pulling directly from my debit/credit cards. The physical Wallet card is useless to me.
It works great on my Nexus 6! I love the look on people's faces when I psy with it because the Nexus is indeed a whale
Can't wait for all of this crap to settle out. (Disclosure: I work for a large financial company...trust me, you have heard of us and our credit cards...I don't work in the card division, though). I do not have a debit card...ATM card only. There is absolutely nothing to be gained for the consumer with any kind of debit transaction. No way I am giving Home Depot. etc. my checking account info to get set up on their system when I can just use a credit card. I am not going to give up points/miles/cash back and take on increased risk just so I can take my phone out of my pocket instead of my wallet. And we are still a long, long way from not needing a wallet (driver's license, medical insurance card, auto insurance card, AAA card, etc. etc.).
I hurried to order my 5x in order to get the $50 Google promotional credit, thinking I could use the credit balance to purchase from the Google store the USB-C cables I knew I would need.
Today, I went to order my cables, and the store wouldn't let me check out, saying "invalid payment method."
I went back to the offer, and in the fine print on the terms it says: "Items ineligible for purchase using promotional balance include certain subscriptions (see the Help Center for more information), as well as items in the Google Store." (emphasis added). You can only use the credit to buy intangibles, not actual things.
I feel ripped off, like it was a cheap bait and switch. Was I unreasonable to think I could use a Google credit to buy things at the Google store? You can use the Google credit from their marketing questions (Google opinion rewards) at the store. I don't need any games or movies, but I do need new cables.
That's my rant.
This has always been the case.
pretty sure it is google PLAY credit, not google STORE credit. so no, you won't able to spend play credit at the store.
I discovered that as well. Google Play credit, regardless of whether it was from this promo or the Opinion Rewards, cannot be used at the store. I called customer support to see if it could be applied to the type C wall charger they sell, and they wouldn't budge. Oh well.
I'm not happy that I can't use the balance on a charger, but I'm also not surprised. Physical equipment costs them a lot more than apps.
With the right cables, you can get away with using an older charger and a minimal difference in charge time. Most of those cables cost way less than google's quick chargers on the store.

If you want a camera app with more manual controls, check out ProShot. I used my Google credit to purchase that as well. And Tasker so I can double tap the screen to turn off the phone.
