[Q] remove google search - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

where can i remove google search box.i remove google search from sys/apps but i want the search box gone where can i find it.

If you're just needing to pull it from the screen, you just long-press it and drag it to wherever the trash can icon shows up.

[Q] How to Rename Application for Root Users

I've searched this and other forums and still can't ffigure out how to change an applications name for a Rooted G1. I've been able to change an application's icon by switiching the .png in the drawtable folder, but where the heck is the apps name info stored?
Thanks for your help in advance.

That is probably going to require either editing the appropriate xml files, or rebuilding the ROM from source to be able to get access to other appropriate files. It may be more trouble than its worth. There may be an app for it, but I am not sure. Maybe someone else can chime in if they know of another way?
Couldn't you use bettercut.

That's a possiblility but I couldn't say for sure because I have never used any home replacement apps.
Thanks Supreme.....

Well its been a long minute since I've used any home replacement but you can still use bettercut on with using open home or ahome. The only thing I'm wondering is when you change the name of the app does it only change on the home screen or in the app drawer to. I'm to lazy to do it myself.
You don't need a home replacement to use Bettercut.

So any idea if Bettercut can actually do what the OP was looking for?

Thats what I said
Better Cup isn't a home replacement app, it doesn't require one either.

Yea I know, I just went back and re-read what I wrote and saw I wrote with instead of without. It was still early for me when I was typing.

O, well I know I didn't help either with being confusing. Its one of those days.
bettercut is only for app shortcuts on your home screen, it won't change the name in the app drawer.
BTW does it work without a home replacement app?

Yes

Thanks for everyone's help in trying to solve this one. As previous post's have noted; Bettercut will only change the name on the Home screen or App drawer, not in the application list.
How about this...if it's too much trouble to rename, is it easy to hide an application from appearing at all?
Thanks to everyone!!

No its actually quite easy to keep it from appearing.....uninstall it.
Oh come on you gotta admit, you were asking for that one LOL
I'm assuming you don't want it appearing in your app drawer? Is that the issue? Are you talking about applications that come on the ROM that you don't want anymore. Please provide not only the end result of what you are looking for, but also a little background and maybe that will help with an answer.
Yes, I did set myself up for that one.
It's a 3rd party app that runs at startup. I would like to hide the app from appearing in the Manage Application menu. Thanks again!!
You can use the modified launcher to hide installed apps from the app drawer but I dont think you can hide from the manage applications section.
Thanks for the input Rodney!
can u also rename apps with the modified launcher?

great! thank you! do you also know if there is a way to remove Latitude and Places? I just updated Maps to the latest...Id like to remove Latitude and Places. Thank you.
edit: you wouldnt happen to know how i can be notified of voicemails without having the stock sprint apk installed?
Places is part of Facebook -- not sure if you can remove it without removing FB too.
Same deal with Latitude (I think) -- pretty sure its an integrated part of Google Maps that isn't its own program and can't be removed without getting rid of Maps altogether.
darn...
...
Thank you. Id like to find an android keyboard(vanilla) WITHOUT voice search or voice to text...

Go download Ic3Rom (way back in the Dev thread), then unzip that and pull the keyboard apk out of there. If I remember correctly, it was a basic AOSP keyboard without the voice stuff, or it maybe at least had the ability to turn it off and not have the voice button show up there.

Google search problem

Hi, anyone notice that when you search for something in the Google now search bar at the top, when you see your search results and click on one it opens it in 2 tabs on chrome. Any way to stop this, it's become very annoying.
Thanks
Don't click the link itself. Click elsewhere within that area of the search result.

Did you read my post? Launch the app, once it is launched three little dots will appear at the top or bottom of the screen, these are where you enter any applications settings.

Try a long-press on the screen? Most apps will follow the android guidelines of using the 3 dots to indicate the menu, but others (especially homescreens) will rely on long-presses to declutter the UI.

I already did yesterday

Chrome Lollipop. Anyway to get new tabs to open to the front?

Launching new tabs in Chrome always go to the background. So dumb... But i can't find anyway to change this.
Chrome settings. Turn off "merge tabs and apps"

Same thing though. If i click on a link and have it open in a new tab it instantly disappears behind the tab I'm on. I want it to open right up to the forefront

Ahhh. I must have misunderstood your OP.
Yeah, chrome has always been that way. I don't think there is a setting to change it.
Just hit the recents button and you'll see your tabs as cards

If i open a new tab in chrome it comes to the front with no specific settings

No, because he wants the tab to open in the front when it opens, like in Dolphin browser. What you said had nothing to do with the OP's question.
On a side note, if you opened the tab a while ago, and been in other apps, you need to fish around in your recent apps to find the tab, it is much easier if this "feature" is turned off and you can choose your tabs in chrome.

Donjuan and Wookie you guys are part right. If you open a new tab on its own it's fine. But if you click and hold on a link and choose to open that link in a new tab it drops down to the bottom and hides behind

Well you did indeed say launching new tabs
That's just the way Chrome is and has always been, even on the desktop version. If you right click and open in new tab, it doesn't automatically change to that other tab.
There is currently a way to do it: when opening a link a new tab, there is a brief white flash on the lower half of the screen; quickly tap it, to open the new tab.
Edit: eff me, maybe not... I am sure this was working yesterday.
