[Q] Captivate w/ Cognition 3.04 Will NOT Boot - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, been lurking for quite a while, but now I need some help.
Some months ago, I rooted my captivate, installed cognition, the firebird kernel, and some modem or other. The phone has been working just fine since then, until last night.
The phone gets stuck on the 'cognition' splash/boot screen. It just sits there, vibrating (in a bit of a pattern). I've tried booting it several times, no dice.
I rebooted into CWM, cleared the cache, no dice.
I rebooted into CWM again, reflashed update.zip (which now that I think about it, was probably just the kernel), no dice.
Threw it into download mode, and did the one-click with Odin3. Again, no dice.
I'm out of ideas, guys, hoping you have some.
Thanks a lot,
-floppypond

[Q] Stuck after boot animation. No Recovery/Download

Hi guys,
I think I finally managed to brick my phone. Everything was working perfectly fine, until today when decided to try GB's Steam kernel.
So a little background first, to make things quicker:
- I was able to open download and recovery mode before, even after doing a odin3 one click restore twice.
- I've tried a Cognition and moved to DarkyYtt3r. Went from 7.0.1 to 7.5 to 7.8 to 8.0.1, no issues.
- Changed the kernel and modem several times. The last one I tried was glitterball's uc/ov stable (no charging death).
- Current set up before this mess:
-- ROM: DarkyYtter v8.0.1 > http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=890429
-- Kernel: gb-reorient-fixed-ocuv-f-cwm.zip > http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=887315
-- Modem: TLJL3 I think.
Everything working beautifully.
Today I saw this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=903238 ... gb's steam kernel. since no one was having major issues, I made a backup of my current rom using CWNand decided to install the kernel using SGS Kernel flasher, according to instructions.
Cool. I've flashed kernels before a few times. No big deal. And I figured, I'm able to get into Recovery or worst case scenario into download mode. I flashed the kernel, reboot, got into Steam's recovery. Looked around. Activated a couple of tweaks although I don't remember which ones.
Rebooted and this is where the issues began. I got the "intro" window you get with i9000 roms (keyboard intro, syncing, etc). A lot of apps were force closing, including facebook, twitter, rom manager, ADW Launcher, etc.
Ok, so I rebooted to Steam recovery and deleted the cache. Went back and the same problem. At least I was able to boot the system.
I said, oh well, let's go back to our backup. Booted Steam's recovery, and tried to recover from the last backup.
It worked for one boot. Not sure what I did, I don't remember, but after trying to boot again, the phone displays the AT&T screen, the GT-I900 screen and then the Galaxy S screen. I then feel the force close vibration, and the screen goes black. I can touch the softkeys and they blink, but I feel the FC vibration every 10 or 15 seconds.
Somewhere along the line something bad happened.... but here is what's bothering me. I cannot get back into download or recovery mode anymore. Been there all day trying to make it work with no luck at all.
So, more importantly, somewhere along the line, between rom flashes, or something, I lost the ability to get into recovery or download mode. I've heard that I900 roms have different button combos, but nothing works
I'll buy a few resistor packs tomorrow, and some cables just in case. I'm afraid that I won't be able to boot into download mode this way either.
also, adb is not detecting the phone. tried both windows and linux. if I could only get it even for one second so I can send a adb reboot download... but no
Do you guys have any ideas?
Thanks!

Did you ever get this problem fixed? The reason I ask is because I'm in this same situation.
We seem to be having the same problem also... Nothing has worked for me so far

Pull your battery, pull your sd card, hold the volume button and plug in the usb cord, this will get you into download
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Keep hope alive glaze!
Sent using XDA App

[Q] Stock restore fails, but I won't give up! (Help please)

So I'm trying to get my VZN Galaxy Tab back on its feet. After trying to get Gingerbread in it so I can use Netflix - and failing - I'm going through a lot of motions.
Okay. First I rooted it with Super One Click. I should have been happy with that, but noooo. Then I tried flashing GB on it (I wish I can remember which ROM I started with...it's a mess. I think the pit file was gt-p1000_mr? Does that sound right?).
When that didn't work, I went to the much-cross-posted procedure for returning it to stock using Heimdall and SCH-i800_VZW_stock. Tried it five times. Each time, it booted into the Galaxy Tab/Samsung logos, then a fast glimpse of scrambled letters for a second followed by twinkly music, then black nothingness. It would then bootloop. I attempted to boot into recovery to wipe data/cache, but I couldn't get there. Vol-Up/Pwr just brought up the logo and scrambled video again.
Since I was still able to get into download mode, I tried flashing another ROM...this one the "P1000XXJQ1_P1000XXJQ1_P1000XXJPZ" method. With this, I was able to also flash CWM so I have SOME recovery mode. Sadly, booting brings up the GT/SAMSUNG logos and I get the spacey animation, but after that, again - blackness. This time, however, the Menu/Home/Back/Search buttons light up, so something's happening in there.
Also, booting into CWM, I cannot get my sdcard to be recognized. I tried different cards, so there's something goofy with the slot itself, I'm guessing.
So nothing is really working, but since I can get into CWM and also download modes, I'm holding out hope that this is not completely bricked.
I just need to find the right method of getting it back to a functioning tablet. If anyone has any suggestions, I'm all eyes. Thanks so much.
UPDATE: I tried reflashing stock using the tried and true method. But this time, I went in and flashed CWM replacing the stock recovery which never worked for me. I got the Galaxy Tab/Samsung logo, and at long last, the animated VZW logo. Then it would bootloop there. I booted into CWM recovery and wiped the data/system and the cache from the first page. It still booted and bootlooped the same. This time, I booted into recovery, went to the mounts and storage section and formatted the system, data and cache. Opening logo only. CWM again, and got a whole bunch of "cache missing" messages. But I think I'm getting closer. Back to work.
UPDATE II: So the farthest I can get is the animated VZW logo using the combo of the stock flash through Heimdall, then flashing CWM with Odin. Still no sdcard access. Anything I should try here? Thanks.

[Q] Android Recovery instead of Clockwork!

Hello all,
New at this.
Ive managed to disable my camera so I wanted to do a factory reset, so I might as well try a cool ROM. Ive gone for the cyanogenmod.
My device is a SGS I9000.
Ive followed this tutorial.
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S:_Full_Update_Guide
Done everything as described.
Ive gotten up to the step to download a ROM (cyanogen, normal, not nightly) with ROM Manager, and fire it up.
I got into clockwork recovery but I thought everything would be one click in ROM manager so I didnt do anything in there and clicked reboot.
After that I wanted to try the other way, so tried the other way, but I cant get myself into Clockwork Recovery anymore.
Then I tried to do things over again from the very start.
Ive tried this thread; http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=892910 to replicate the conditions under which I got into clockwork once. By redownloading the ROM, but after this I also got into the normal android recovery.
Well, Im kind of stuck on what to do now...
Could anyone help me out?
~tb.
You say that you can't get into Reovery. Could you please tell us what you do to get into recovery? Have you tried the "volume up"+"menu"+"lock" button combo? After you get into revovery, it's fairly simple to flash cyanogenmod.
Thank you for responding iamsatan.
I only got into Clockwork Recovery once.
After this I always got the normal Recovery, whatever I did.
But I have solved it already.
I bricked my phone (true story), after that I used odin3 to reset my phone.
Next I did a factory reset and I walked through the whole guide again.
Now I did the steps the first time I got into Clockwork, so everything is fine now.

[Q] Samsung boot screen after Voodoo and Speedmod

Hi there,
searched the forum already, found some useful answers, but didn't work.
I had a brandnew Samsung Galaxy S 2.3.3 with a 'JVI' ending. First I installed the voodoo standard package with 'JVN' (compatible to JVI) ending. That was based on stock kernel.
Afterwards I flashed the Speedmod K15i-T10 ('JVO') and it worked perfectly. Each time I installed a new kernel, I restored my previous saved data, apps, etc. I recognized some lags though, thus I wanted to delete my entire data, apps, everything, I thought that was the problem.
I entered the Volume-up + Menu + Power menu and deleted everything I could, including backups, etc.
When I start the phone it shows the Samsung boot screen for hours. Nothing happens.
I reinstalled the Voodoo stock kernel, nothing. I changed from ext4 back to RFS, and back again, nothing. I reinstalled the Speedmod by hardcore. Still nothing. Boot screen for ever.
What to do?? In the Speedmod thread I couldn't find a solution, neither at the well-written FAQ.
Thanks in advance.
Matthias
SOLVED
Okay, got it myself. I flashed the new JVR Rom from Samsung and flashed the Speedmod again. Got it running now.

[Q] Get past bootscreen on i9000b without losing data

Good morning.
first of all, I've already read most of the posts that concern recovering the mobile, but here's the thing:
I flashed other ROMs a while ago, the ICS one iirc, then gave up and changed back to stock froyo, followed by an update to gingerbread via Kies, so my SGS already has the stock ROM. Everything worked fine, as expected, but once in a while when i turned the phone off and back on again, it got on a bootloop, and after many attempts it started ok. It also used to crash and turn itself off sometimes, but since it rarely happened, I wasnt bothered by that.
This time, I had to turn it off, and it just doent start back. I can access download and recovery mode, but since I have some things in its memory that I dont have backup, I really wanted to avoid the hard reset.
Do someone has any idea of how to proceed?
Thanks very much.
