Hi I guys, I searched the forums and Google and didn't find anything.
On my notification bar there is occasionally a white star with a red dot. It's always some kind of spam today it was "Free College Degrees"
I deleted any of the apps I had installed in the last week (since I had noticed the star). The white star and red dot has come back.
Does anyone know of an app that does that? All the running services seem pretty legit to me. Can someone tell me how to isolate it? I would prefer not to have to reflash..
I'm running Cognition 3.04.
Thanks,

Have you tried dl security software to check for malware?

Hi,
I have the same problem but I think I've found the App or one App that initiates this messages.
On my Milestone I'm using APNDroid which is using Airpush Ads since the lat Update.
I used aLogCat to search for the App that starts this "Browser" with the Ads and there I noticed the entries of apndroid and airpush.
Hopefully this information is useful for you.

I installed and uninstalled the Mirin browser recently, would it have left some remnants behind?
I installed alogcat and did a filter with "Browser" which came up with maybe 10-15 entries of
Code:
V/WindowManager (2970): Dsptch > Window{48688688 com.android.vending/com.android.vending.AssetBrowserActivitypaused=false}
Can that be what you mean? I apologize, but you could provide some more detail?

if you've deleted all installed apps you could just back up important datas/pics and do a factory reset it will bring you back to like a clean new install rom clearing the remnants that's bugging you.
Got it, put the "Program Monitor" widget on a screen and opened it. Only 2 apps running: messenger and Brain Age Test 2. I guess it came in on a Brain Age Test update.
Is it odd that Brain Age didn't show up in settings --> applications --> running services?
APNdroid
In my case it's APNdroid Free that is causing the notification. When I click on the notification, the first thing I see is "APNdroid" at the top of the browser. So I tried checking the app on the Market, but developer Martin Adamek temporarily removed the app:
"Ad-supported version of APNdroid is not available at the time, as I need to reconsider to include notification ads. Based on the user feedback, I guess this was bad idea and I need to think what's next for free version."
Star in Notification Bar
Hello,
I used AirPush detector and it found the application that was causing my HTC EVO4g to get this star with the red dot in my notification bar to show up. As a matter of fact, the star was currently in my notification bar when I uninstalled the app. which was Ice Cream Sandwich wallpaper and the star immediately disappeared. Hope this helps someone...
Airpush ads are evil. I used an app called Addons Detector and it found the culprit (it was a game called Dungeon TD). I won't tolerate ads in my notification bar.
Thanks for the Airpush detector recommendation. I searched google and this thread came up. Found I had a Steve Jobs app that was sending me ads in my notification bar.
Another culprit
GO SMS Theme Pink Bubble is the one my girl was getting hers on.
Thanks! Add-ons detector worked like a charm. The Airpush detector didn't do it for me.

Do Market notifications work for anyone? Or is it a known Android issue? Never worked for me and I'm on wifi/cell towers about 50/50.
Does it work in 2.3? I've never seen it work on 2.1 or 2.2. I've only seen it pop up in the notification area when manually checking/downloading an update. (thanks Google! -eye roll-)
Rarely it will pop up for me when I open the market and don't go to my apps. But almost every time its popped up for me was because I went to my apps.
I was really hoping Androids implementation of this would be better than iOS. Especially when froyo let you update all or enable auto update. In reality I think iOS is better (in this one tiny area), because if you open the app store you instantly see updates are available. But in android if you don't go to my apps sometimes it will take several minutes of browsing the market before you are notified.

I rarely get any Market notifications unless I'm at My Apps in the Market app and let it sit there for a while. It'd be pretty nice if I got notified to update my apps before I go into the Market though, I agree.

Thats the thing....they way the market was sold....so to speak....is that you would get a notification, whenever any app you have installed has an update. Seems most everyone gets that notification after they manually check. Thats what happens with me.
Could it be because you're shutting down the market app? I know that's what happens with all my other apps that have notifications. You only receive them if you don't "close" the app, but instead leave it running in the background.

That can't be it because Android judges on it's own what should be shut down based on the memory it needs I think. In other words, I never closed it.
These guys found a way to kick start it a while back, but I can't find the files to do the same for us.

I think Demonic240's referring to the difference between exiting any app (i.e. Market) using the back button until reaching Home versus 1 clicking away to home or another app. The difference is measurable in Task Manager. Method two: Market still runs. Method one: Market closed.

Gotcha. Regardless, I don't see any point in having update Notifications if it requires you to keep the Market app running constantly. I assumed Google had it connected to one of the basic Android services that always run in the background.
In the link in my last post, they talk about a value in a settings.db that triggers a CheckinService. Stuff that I can't find on our phones.
It's an interesting question. I got notifications regularly in 2.1 and can't recall when I got one in 2.2. I kept background data enabled under both.
Checking Manage Applications, Market Updater 1.0 only shows up when viewing All, and appears to be a dead service even when Market is running. I never checked it under 2.1 because it appeared to work.
Mine has never worked...only when I open the market does it decide to tell me I have a update!
Do you mean popup in notification bar or is there actually a popup that comes up. I only see notification never saw a popup.

Hi,
this morning I received 2 Push Ads for some battery related stuff.
For some this may not be that surprising, but I've been using the OB for over a year now and have never received a single push ad with the apps I was using. Now, after playing with Zeus as stock replacement for a couple of weeks this happened and I want to eliminate the root cause of this as soon as possible.
I'm currently using Zeus v3. Does any app (or the rom itself) cause Push Ads? How can I find out which app is causing this and turn it off?
Thanks,
jo
Yes,some app can send you push ads
Check a task manager app to see the running background apps (which you've installed)
Try to kill 'em and don't open till you get another push app, then check the task manager app again to conclude which app that send you those ads
Delete or use firewall to block the apps from using the internet
Sent from derp-mobile
That's the first time i great about push apps on Zeys ROM. And I use it from when it started.
As suggested put firewall and see which app is the culprit.
Plenty of apps that can do the job on the market.
Me too! Its my 1st time to receive such thing. Im at zeus v3. I thought it was just a txt message. Whats bad is i don't know where it came from. No OS should allow such thing.
I've found the push ad that showed again this morning. It says "Turbo Boost Your Battery?" I'm not allowed to post URLs yet, but if you search for "airpush - Is this red star icon malware? How to get rid of it", you can find a description.
So it seems to be an app that uses AirPush. I've tried the "Addons Detector" app but it did not show me any app that uses AirPush (only those using AdMob, AdSense, AdMarvel, MOcean,Millenial, MobClix, AdWhirl, or InMob).
Is AirPush the only ad network that uses push notifications?
Since I haven't installed that many apps since I installed the zeus, it can't be that hard to find out which one it is. I froze the apps "BetterBatteryStats" and "BatteryCalibration" with Titanium Backup now since they are apps that I did not have installed prior to zeus and will see whether the push ads reappear.
Next in line will be "ConverterPro", "FasterFix", "GPS Status", "Rom Manager", and "System Toolbox Free".
Jo
yeah me too every single day but it written: "Download Free Burn The Rope App... blablabla..."
I dont know is it from zeus or app from market that I've installed... oh and again... I use GPS Status too... or maybe the ad. from GPS Status app?
Install this app
Do a scan
Then uninstall the app with airpush
nikpik, thanks for the tip. AirPush Detector did in fact find an AirPush app that the other app ("Addons Detector") did not detect.
It found "System Toolbox Free" to be the culprit, which I installed after Zeus in order to fix some GPS related stuff if i remember correctly. I haven't been using it for quite a while now, but it had some updates recently that probably included this great feature.
and gone it is...
I installed almost all airpush detectors and all failed to detect it.
The add is "king fighter II"
not from the rom.... ive not encountered any at all
also not from the "battery calibration" thats included in zeus im pretty sure about that....
try freezing and unfreezing the apps that youve recently installed one by one if detector apps fail to locate.... =)
for me it was a wallpaper hd app...airpush helped me...thx
Next time do not slander Zeus rom whether you are not sure what's the source of the ads. It's misleading and mudslinging.
This rom is the best rom for our phone(in my opinion), it's a way better than lg stock rom.
you can also use adFree (need rooted phone) a free program from market that can disable all ads on your phone. i use it and i don't see any ads on any of the free programs i have installed.
[Q] Random "Free Music" app appeared on my touchpad in place of Google Play Store
My Touchpad was charging today and I just went to check on it. I unlocked the device and sitting right where the Google Play Store app shortcut used to be on my homescreen was an app called "Free Music" and it had the old itunes icon. I accidentally clicked on it as I was trying to long press it and remove it from my homescreen. It launched the Google play store as if the real app shortcut was there. After I removed it from my homescreen I checked the app drawer and did not see the app.
I am running CM 9 Alpha 2. Has anyone else experienced this? Is there malware on my TP, or a Virus? Any help is appreciated. Thanks
Me too
I havent checked my touchpad with CM9A2, but my Acer Iconia with CM9-ported had this appear too.
I did not have this 3/8 afternoon, and had my tablet off yesterday night 3/8, and turned it on today 3/9, and it appeared shortly after.
Very strange and suspicious to have an itunes logo-ed shortcut "self-install"
Hope some more people can shed some insight into this.
Are we android user's getting hacked/compromised? (beyond what Google is already sucking off our tablets)
Whew
Okay, at least someone else had this happen. Now we just need to figure out what it is. Did you notice anything else funky? I couldn't find anything else that was weird, however I noticed this weird chinese app all the way in the bottom of my "All" apps list and I have since disabled it out of caution. Let me know if you have this app.
Did you just remove the app from the homescreen or open it also like I did? I really can't think of any app I installed that could have done this except one. This "watch TV" app, that I also uninstalled since just in case. I hope someone can explain this to us.
I just removed it from the homescreen (luckily did not click it to open by accident)
I dont have any Chinese/Foreign language apps on my All Apps.
I also dont have that "Watch TV" app.

I got a response from the Iconia forum, and I found my Pin to Pintrest App that allowed push installs. Do you have the same app?
Interesting
I don't have that app, but it could have been a different app that had the same type of air install thing. I uninstalled a bunch of apps that I didn't use that much, one of them might have had this feature enabled. Ill download that detector and see if any app on my tablet has that.
Thanks
I turned on my just updated to LG GB Thrill this morning and there was an unsolicited icon on the desktop. I didn't put it there, and in fact I thought I put a Calendar icon where it is. The icon does not show up in my app tray or in my list of widgets or shortcuts. It's a purplish icon with the magenta words "Games & Apps" in some futuristic font on it, with a white chess piece in the upper left, a white jet in the upper right, a white chat in the lower right, and a dartboard in the lower right, and it's labeled Apps.
I assume it was forced there by one of the few apps I've downloaded in the last day and half, although I wouldn't put it past AT&T. I mostly suspect a Roulette app or a ringtone editor, since the other few apps I downloaded I had been using recently on the previous ROM.
Is there any way to determine where this icon came from? (I want to rate down the app and uninstall it, at the least.) How can I trace its origin?
(I assume I can trash it, although I'm waiting until I find out where it came from.)
Rick
I'm guessing the ringtone maker, I've gotten these annoying ad app icons, and even annoying bookmarks in my browser that I can't delete or it will crash

I wanted to know if you guys know any apks for malware or antivirus. I have been getting a lot of pop ups. I installed kapersky and malware bytes but they both do anything.
pop ups when browsing and or apps? Most likely you'll need ad blocking software and or browser extension.

It seems to be ad pop ups. I would be using an app such as whatsapp or watching a video through my gallery and the add just pops up out nowhere. it has never done that before.
If you get apps from places that are not "trusted sources" many of them have these pop up ads.
Go through and we which apps have Device Admin, Accessibility, and Draw Over Other Apps permissions
Are you using stock Gallery or another app?

Personally, I do not use any antivirus on my phone. I tried some of them before but finally gave up due to the large consumption to the phone memory which results into a slowdown of system and a faster drain of power. Plus, the major drawbacks of these free AV, like Avira, Kapersky, Bitdefender and more in Top 5 Free Antivirus in 2018, are the ads and popups bundled with them. They keep sending annoying ads and pop-ups during running, and even worse, sometimes they downloaded and installed things automatically.
Thus, if you download apps from playstore, surf the safe websites and connect to a clean outside device, do not bother to install a AV on your phone.

so l read this thread awhile back and thought nothing of it ............ until now!
I have "developed" the same Issue! and yes Its definitely an app that has access to "appear on top" and its under Apps> special Access> apps that can appear on top! Now for me to identify the culprit......? only issue though is if you have this issue your most likely the kind of user who experiments and installs several apps at once.... so here goes my trial by elimination process?
Hi had this problem.
I deleted the free APK that I had installed but I was still getting pop ups.
You need to go to settings / apps and right at the end of the list there was a app with no name or app logo.
Deleted it, problem solved.
I tried virus scan apps and nothing found it.
Hope this helps

Thanks for the advice! I deleted all the apps I installed in the past week and still no success until your post! Issue was starting to really bug me cos I kinda hate the idea that I dont have control over a device I paid for....lol

Yeah that's exactly what I saw on my list.
No AV will block an ad. They block known, to them, malware apks. Use something like Addons Detector from G Play store and/or Nice catch from S Galaxy store to list all the apks that have ads modules and then remove those you installed last or don't recognise or need.
Run Malwarebytes.
