I am happy to announce the 0.9.8.6 release of Plex which adds support for Honeycomb. This release has been worked and reworked by Darrin and the rest of the beta crew for months in an attempt to get everything working well on Honeycomb. Movies, TV and Music all work along with some of the Plugins. The layout has been optimized for our larger screen and looks great in my opinion.
Before anyone ask, NO the Netflix is not working on Android at this time.
Video by default will transcode to the Xoom, but if you want to try out direct stream and direct play you can enable it in Advanced Settings. Because of the limitations of the Tegra2 with High Profile we decided that transcoding should be the default.
You can find the new update in the market on your Xoom or here on the web.
If you need the server click the link forwindows or OSx
If you do get any crashes please send the event in along with info on any custom kernel you're running.
If you have any questions feel free to ask or PM me.
Have a look at Darrins blog post for more info.

How to help us trouble shoot your problems.
If you are having playback issues and we ask you for a logcat please do the following.
Download alogcat
Open alogcat and clear the log.
Open Plex and try to play the movie, song or plugin.
Exit plex.
Open alogcat and save whats in there to a file.
If we ask for a PMS.log or Plex Media Server.log file please do the following.
First close down the PMS in your system tray. Then open it back up again, this clears out the log file. Try to stream a video. If it fails then do the following.
Windows-
Right click PMS icon in your system tray
Choose open plug-in folder
Go up one folder level in explorer
Choose the logs folder
Grab a copy of the Plex Media Server.log file.
OSx-
~/Library/Logs/Plex Media Server.log
Now lets go to pastebin.com and paste the contents of either file into the field. Send only the link.
Very nice! I use Plex on my iPhone and iPad everyday and now when I also got a Xoom, I wanted to be able to use Plex on this device.
I was just out snooping through the site for my wife's iPad and saw the news. This is awesome for the Plex team!
There is a good link here: http://darrin.plexapp.com/2011/04/27/plex-for-android-now-supports-honeycomb-xoom-and-other-tablets/
This thing looks awesome on my Xoom and it was the only thing making me miss my iPad!
ive never used anything like this so forgive my ignorance, whats the point if I can store stuff locally?

I started with Plex on a HTPC setup and MacMini. Since then my library is now portable (3g/remote wifi) as well as usable in my house when my wife is watching Glee
Its also solid at playing HD content to your Xoom and saves the pain of having to run all your movies through Handbrake before you play them.
ive got a bluray player with external hd that plays mkv so idk if i would need to stream to my xoom over wifi
i am trying to find a reason to play with this but cant

The entire point of this on Android is for when your NOT at your home. It does pretty well over 3g, but it really shines on remote wifi.
Now Plex at home along with XBMC or to a lesser degree Boxee all SMOKE your blueray with regard to media. If you have never played with any of these program and actually indexed a library out of your mkv's then you need to give it a try. Seriously you will not want to go back to simple list view of your movies after you play with one of these programs.
Bottom line though, if you have no want to have access to all your media when away from home then this app may no be fore you.
Streaming a bluray over 3g would be awful no?

Quick question... sorry in advance for not taking the 64.3 seconds necessary to research it myself, but does this work with m$ media center recorded TV files?

Ummm I think you misunderstood. I was talking about streaming your MKV files, I have over 300 720p MKVs that stream just fine. The transcode engine should work with 1080p's but I never really tried.
If the majority of your movies are ON BluRay and you dont want to rip them, then again, this program might not be for you.

As long as the file is not DRM protected it should work.
just downloaded it and gave it a whirl. Seems pretty sweet, I have a 1080p rip that wasnt too bad over my tethered 3g. But again, anything in my "library" would easily be able to be stored/played on my Xoom, but I guess if I forgot something this would be nice
The music portion is awesome. Is it possible to make the player goto landscape?
Can I remove 1 individual mp3/movie from the folder I added without deleting it from my hard drive?
nothing plays on my asus transformer, when i try to play a movie or even run a plug in , it goes back to the main screen

You I would say have a unique library if you have a bunch of HD movies encoded in low profile. Thats the single biggest downfall of the Tegra2 chip, most of us need to re-encode the files we have for playback.
If all of your movies CAN be played back on your Xoom without framedrops, then go take a look in Advanced settings and turn on Direct Stream and Direct Play. Direct Play will stream the file directly with zero transcoding as long as bandwidth allows.
I am closing in on 5 TB of media on my end and there is no way that any portable in the near future will be able to house it. Thats where this App comes into play for me.
You should be able to remove it from the library which is nothing more then a database. The next time it scans it will be added again. There maybe a way to hide it, but I have never looked into that. Google is your friend. I would just remove it from the library and then move the file to another folder.

Thanks for the heads up, it did just drop and no testing has been done on it. Its odd though as the hardware should be the same.
Are you getting any errors in the android status area or does it just drop back to menu?
Do you know how to get a logcat?
Download alogcat open it, clear the log, open Plex and try to play the movie and plugin, exit plex, open alogcat and save whats in there to a file.
PM me the logcat file and Ill pass it over to Darrin.

In the HTC camcorder even you choose the encoding method as MPEG it would save the file as 3gp, but with this it will save the file as mp4. I had to modify a few smali files to get it working.
This is only changing the extension. The videos are already being recorded in an mpeg-4 stream, they are just being created with a .3gp extension. This is really only for people who need the extension to be mp4 for some specific reason.
I have tested this a bit so be sure to back up your original HTCCamera.apk just in case.
Download it here.
As you can see below, nothing with the encoding has changed.

Does this also change the audio codec to something useable like AAC? Love your roms, use them and enjoy them heavily, mp4 usable on the ps3 would be amazing!

Nope, I have no idea how to do that... This wasn't very difficult, it just took some digging.
720p at 30 fps is fine. The problem is that we aren't hitting that fps.
Can't squeeze blood from a turnip, and you cannot make hardware do something its unable to with the current OS.
As for aac audio streams, I doubt this phone supports it. I know where to change it, but so do a lot of people, esp. on the N1 forums. I've not heard of a successful case yet. Not even CM6 does it.
Before i flashed to your newest rom, i decided to try this on the existing rom.. Took footage of my room and what do you know, streams to the ps3 just fine.. But i pressed select and the Audio had dolby digital in it, meaning sound worked.. I took another video but this time played a song. Tried it and it worked!!!
This is AMAZING news! Before i had to sit there and convert the videos and they usually ended up not even working, now using PS3 Media Server, they work no problem. Thanks so much, you should take a look for the Evo guys and get it fixed for them as well if you can, i have a feeling all my evo owning family members are going to want in!
If you folks want to see if the aac audio codec will work, you can try this. Install it via clockwork, but make a nandroid.

Is it possible to record videos that use H.264 when res set to 720p?it should improve its 720p quality.it can only set to WVGA when it uses H.264.
Used the AAC Flash zip. Tried another video, using PS3 media server, it played fine with audio. Decided to plug the phone strait to the PS3 and try it there, Unsupported data on all 3 mp4 files. So no dice on native, but works streamed which is what i wanted in the first place.
I was digging through some files on the stock froyo kernel last week and it seems that they may have added mp4 as a container option, although I haven't loaded up the .zip to check.

Use PMS (PS3 Media Server). Everything else is a joke.
quepaso- PMS is for windows/mac/linux correct? so your saving newly encoded media files to a computer then accessing via the ps3 not connecting android to connect to ps3 directly via a media server. correct?
Yes, i just copy the mp4 file to my media server pc (it houses all my music, pictures and blu-ray movies that get streamed to the ps3s in the house), and the ps3 plays them back fine.
I am not streaming directly from the phone because that would be insanely slow. My entire house is wired with ethernet.
hmm... im getting unsupported data error from ps3.
vid records just fine and is stored as mp4 with the acc zip installed... i then i moved video from android to desktop.
When i access the file from ps3 via PMS i can see the file (even with the thumbnail preview)but clicking it causes it to go "unsupported"
any ideas?
Try mediainfo to see what the contents of the container are
mediainfo.sourceforge.net
Will all do respect Quepaso implied that the mp4 extension was already supported by the ps3. If I have to convert from .mp4 to another supported output what's the point in having the vids save as mp4 in the first place?

We’re still playing around with the Chromecast, and will have some thoughts on it later, but we wanted to point out a feature that you may not have been aware of after watching yesterday’s demo from Google. Chromecast can play local video files from your computer to a TV. That means you aren’t stuck with YouTube or Netflix or uploading your current collection to a cloud service – you can grab files already on your computer and then stream them to a TV.
Outside of owning a Chromecast device (which is sold out everywhere), all you have to do is install the Chromecast extension on your PC, then find the file path of a local video file that you’d like to play, paste that path into the address bar in a Chrome browser, and then press the Chromecast button to cast it on over. It really is that simple.

Nice!
I don't have my CC yet but I tried dragging a few videos into Chrome. An MP4 file worked. An MKV played video without audio. An AVI file did not play at all.
This is part way to what I really want. I'd like to be able to navigate to content on my phone and play it on the Chromecast. I would like it to properly play h.264 and still successfully play DD, DTS and so on through my receiver.
Hopefully we can somehow get this support.
You can also hit CTRL+O while a tab is focused to open a file dialog box

I don't think you need a special OS version for Chromecast. The ability is built into Netflix, Google TV/Movies, Google Music apps from Play Store. Maybe you might need a minimum of ICS to get the versions of the apps that support Chromecast.
I got my CC today, and tried using the native file explorer in Chrome, which unfortunately sucks. I downloaded Plex media server, set up it quickly, and cast the tab I had it open in to my TV....Works like a charm, and I'm pleasantly surprised at how nice and neat Plex is. I think it's definitely the better of the two options, and only took about 15 minutes to set up.

Sweet, glad to hear! How powerful is the computer you streamed from? Did you try 720p video?
I dragged and dropped my media folders to my bookmark toolbar.
It's not a pretty interface like XBMC but it works and put's syncs to all my chrome browsers.
Now I have to finally set up my WD hard drive for streaming. It'll be nice to plug this in to a hotel TV and stream my collection to it instead of my laptop or tablet.
I'm stoked I ordered 2!
My computer isn't anything special. About 5 years old....Dell XPS 420, Quad-core Intel Core 2... I picked the highest quality, which is 720p with high bitrate, and it streamed without any lag whatsoever.

OK. My desktop is even older, Pentium Dual-Core E5300 @ 2.60 GHz. That might meet the cutoff for standard def but unlikely for high-def. I guess I will find out.
And it turns out that Google says streaming video from a Chrome tab in Windows XP is not supported. All my laptops are still on XP and single-core... cause I stopped using my laptops regularly when iOS/Android came to prominence and never bought a new one.

This thing is awesome! I'm sitting at work and decided 'f it I'm going to try this thing out'. So I set up my HTC VIEW (the 4g version of the Flyer tablet) and had it run as a wifi hot spot. I connected my laptop to it and plugged the chromecast into one of the TVs we have in my office. I installed the Google Cast extension to chrome, set up the chromecast and was ready to go. Next I opened a new tab, dragged over an episode of Futurama and hit cast. With about a 1/2 second delay from when I hit play it started playing on the TV. Once it started playing it had zero lag and it worked flawlessly. Frankly I'm impressed.

Live streams could work but the Live Stream your talking about probably has some DRM method that won't currently work on the CCast.
Give it time though I'm sure all of those type services will support CCast when they get around to it.

YouTube doesn't support live streaming of any kind on the Chromecast or any of their other DIAL compatible apps on tvs and other devices. Why that is, I have no clue. It has been quite a while and they haven't said anything about live streaming so I wouldn't expect it any time soon.

Likely it has to do with the authentication involved, but it could also have something to do with DRM fears.
Remember that Chromecast is essentially a headless micro-computer client - so it's accessing the media separately from the device making the cast request.
It's like if I called you on the phone and said "Hey, go to this YouTube link" - your YouTube session would have no knowledge of my laptop's session, and if the link I give you isn't available to your account, you won't see it.
Not to mention CCast only supports Widevine and Playready DRM...
It would not surprise me to find that the Live Channels on You Tube are using some other DRM or Encryption method.
You should write to the channel your paying the sub to and get them working on CCast support.

Yes only the Player will use Internet, The actual local streaming does not need Internet access.
CCast uses Internet to load the player and then the file stream over local network no net required once the player is loaded.
As for playing XBMC to CCast best solution I have found is Yatse Remote but it requires in app one time payment to unlock local cast, Once there Install the cast Addon and the content on your XBMC HTPC can be streamed to your CCast.
how much internet do you think the player will need ? for a movie for example
ok thats good to know, could i play local files and continue browsing on my tablet / macbook for example....
would you reccomend getting one? or is roku streaming stick better
i believe miracast doesnt uses another technology which doesnt use data, but another way of using the internet.

The player is just a download of a HTML5 app (except for Netflix), it should be tiny, and doesn't matter what you're playing.
Miracast is screen mirroring, so it requires your device to play the movie, and what you see on your device is what goes to the TV.
The advantage is that often times the device can play more via software like MX Player. The disadvantage is that you cannot do other things with your device while playing the movie as exactly what you see on your device is what appears on the TV. Not so good if you get an embarrassing text message or something, and it'll use a lot of battery power.
The advantage to Chromecast is that Chromecast itself does the playback.. Once you make the request to play a video, you can do whatever you want on your device - even turn it off. Your device (or another device on your network) acts as the remote control.
Personally I really like it - I can browse YouTube and add videos to the TV Queue while stuff is playing full-screen on the TV.
I can play a movie in Netflix for my family to watch while I browser other movies they might like.
If I need to leave, my wife can run the same app and connect to Chromecast so she can pause/play/change things.

No you do not install anything on the CCast it does that automatically to load whatever player App is required to work with your Mobile App...
Plex App will tell it to load the Plex player, aVia will tell it to load the aVia Player, Netflix tells it to load the Netflix player.
Once the player is loaded into the CCast (ie in Plex it says Plexc ready to cast) no further internet should be required to stream local content.
For local on device media I suggest BubbleUPnP or aVia but that local content needs to be compatible with CCast.
\
ah ok thats explains it. i will be getting it delivered tomorrow....
when you say local content needs to be compatible, do you think i will be ok with the following...
i will be mainly trying to play avi and mkvs movies...
i know you can rename mkv to m2ts which some players will play
is real player cloud not a good app? thats free???

CCast compatible means:
Container type MP4
Video Codec H.264
Audio Codec AAC or MP3
Video Bitrate not higher than 8Mbps
4-6 is a good compromise for compatibility with many devices and network conditions
RealPlayer Cloud is okay - but if your media is not Chromecast-compatible you have to upload it to their cloud and their servers will transcode it for you via their SurePlay feature.
You get 2GB of cloud for free and can get some additional storage by completing some tasks (referrals, share).

Please download EZCast App from Google Play, it can cast local video, music, pdf, word, excel,PPT to your chromecast and show on TV.
i tried this with my chromecast
and it was quite fiddly getting files to play (i could change some files from mkv to mp4 and they played but some files the sound didnt play. however using plex server on mac and i beemed it across it played fine... however i noticed the data took a hit
i was just messing about wiht a few files video and it took around 300mb? it seems its playing over wifi...rather then locally...
am i doing something wrong
Casting uses all my home network bandwidth
I can use my Lenovo A7000-a phone to cast to a windows display. It works well. No 3rd party software is used on either the phone or my desktop. However, it consumes my entire (abysmally low - Hey! its the Philippines) 5MBps network bandwidth. No other user on the local home router can access the internet. I would have thought the casting would just be a connection across the router, is this NOT the case? How can I improve this so no other users are affected?
I have got a new Nokia Lumia 1320.
Is there an app launcher to install apps like there are launchers in Android devices?
Is a free media player that supports most formats like .avi .mp4 .mkv .flv? Or that which is free in some countries?

1. No, but there are programs like Skinery Themes, or Transparent Icons, Cool Tiles and 8.1 HD Tiles that can help make your desktop like you want, there are and other programs, i listed only those I know.
2. Although not entirely free, Moli Player Pro is fully functional in trial version with some limitations, but you can watch approx. any video format.
1. thanks for themers, I'm waiting for 8.1, no need for themers
So there are no launchers hmm
2.Moliplayer Pro free does not play .mkv and .flv. It only plays .mp4 and .avi, and that too not all .avi as some movies it didn't play. IF I purchase it once and uninstall it and want to install it after 2 months, will I have to pay or where it gets recorded that I installed particular apps.

It's just you need to know some specifics in how to operate and where to put those movie files, as there are some limitations in WP 8.0 ( should dissapear in 8.1 ), there are help videos when you open the app. to guide you in understandin better how it woks.
If you purchase the app it get's linked to your Microsoft account that you used on the device you purchased it from, so if after a period you'll want to reinstall the app you just need to be sure you're using the same account, and all will be smooth an cool.
All that must be in paid version of Moliplayer
Anyway in free version it shows thumbnails with some snapshot of video for some .avi movies, but does not play it.... so they were at the right place. It asks me to pay for it to play that format.
Can we check all apps installed or previously installed on phone in the Microsoft Account on computer? where?

Why is there no free version available of VLC media player its like for free for every other existing device and OS, except for win 8 mobile
I have MX player and it plays MKV and AVI. I also think there is a free version that works perfectly fine.
Edit. Yeah in fact I have the free version and it great.
