how to do back up SD card? - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So i want to follow this tutorial:
[
in order so that my phone will work a bit faster, but
when I copy all the files from my sd card to my desktop on my computer
the folder res, cant be copy cause it has long name of files inside. This res folder in located under a Android folder on the root of my sd card.
is the android folder is important?
thank you for your help

Use something like estrongs file manager to compress/zip the folder, and then copy the zip to your PC...

is the Android folder important on the root directory ?
I tried and it didnt work

I don't have a res folder--so may not be that important--depends what files are in there
They may be replaced when you do a nandroid restore or flash a new rom
Your tutorial you are using never got posted

i did notice that i did not add the link to the tutorial which I am following. But the tutorial can be found, on this web site:
Nexus one Q&A>Newbie Friendly How To's w/ Instructional Videos>How To Switch to a Different SD Card (for use with Swap, Hero ROMs, etc.)
I am not yet allow to post links. I am consider a newbie, regarding theses topics

http://theunlockr.com/2009/10/15/ho...-android-when-using-swap-hero-and-or-apps2sd/
this is the tutorial

Well,
If you are familiar with your phone and getting into and out of recovery--here is what I do--using Amon_Ra recovery--I don't like Rom Mgr/Clockwork Mod.
Copy contents of SD Card to PC.
Power off phone and pull sd card out and using a card reader, reformat it on pc with sdformatter from web. Format Type-Full Erase On and Format Size Adjustment-On.
Put it back in phone and boot into recovery--hold down vol-/pwr/trackball at same time until phone boots and select recovery.
Then go to Partition SD Card/Partition SD. Select 1gb ext size (if you have an 8gb card or bigger) and 0 swap. Once done go back to Partition SD screen and select xext2 to ext3. When done go back to first recovery screen. Here you can USB Toggle and copy contents from pc back to SD Card.
At this depends what you want to do. Restore a nandroid or flash a new rom. Either way I usually wipe ALL data and caches at least 3X and restore or flash new rom.
Hope this helps,
Ken

it helps some what,
Do i need to format my sd card in fat32 or NTFS format?
another question is that when I try to do a simple select all copy and paste unto a different folder in my computer, it gets to a point where it does not want to copy (res folder) which is located under the android folder. Is this folder (res) to any importance??/?
thank you

Fat32, but I think sdformatter accounts for that--I don't remember a selection
sdformatter puts card back to original/new condition--I highly recommend it
As I mentioned, I have no res folder, DR's suggestion is a good option
Look and see what files are in it, may just be apps/images that will get put back eventually
Here is Google Search link--search is your friend http://search.yahoo.com/search;_ylt...s+folder&fr=att-portal&toggle=1&cop=&ei=UTF-8 It may give you some answers
You could also try adding a .bak to name of folder thru Root Explorer and maybe copy/paste it to phone somewhere from sd card folder shown in Root Explorer, then as soon as you reload sd card, go back to Root Explorer and copy/paste it back to Android and change name back.
I am not sure about that, maybe someone can confirm that would work and not mess up anything. If you nandroid, it shouldn't matter--??
If you are new to all this it just takes time and a lot of searches and thread reading--as long as do nandroids and use Titanium Backup for your app management, you can recover from anything.
Ken

http://efreedom.com/Question/1-2965149/Res-Src-Folder-Relation-Eclipse-Android
I think that folder is put there when doing development projects, if you or someone used SDK and/or Eclipse that's how it got there--so doubt if you need it
Just an opinion, I am not a dev or very tech savvy with Android OS

[Q] How to format my SDcard without rebuilding?

I have a few odd files on my SDcard that have ASCII symbols as part of the name. I can't rename them or deleted them so I am was thinking about formatting my SDcard. I guess my questions are:
Can I format my SDcard without having to totally set CM7 back up again from scratch?
What's the best way to format it and what file system should I be using? I have a 16GB card I added a while back, I'm not even sure what file system it is on currently, can I look somewhere?
I am guessing I can just USB mount my SDcard, copy all the contents from it, format it (through Clockworkmod?), and then copy everything back to it?
I already copied everything from the card to my PC and I just skipped the files that had weird names and were stated as being invalid and would not copy.
You can see what I am running in my signature below.

When you format an SD Card it doesn't do anything to what's already flashed to your phone. Just backup the files you need to a computer then format the SD Card. Once its formatted, put your files back on. Simple as that.

Good Luck!
Thanks guys... thought that was the case... just making sure. Will do this today.

There are invisible files and folders which in linux are preceded with a period like .android-secure etc. I know on mac they are invisible too, don't know about windows though. You may want to make sure you copy those too.

Yeah, I'm on Win7 and I have no files hidden, thanks though. I successfully used Clockworkmod this morning to partition my sd card, format it, and then copied all the files back. Seems to be OK thus far.

Basic Android folder, file structure and names

Okay I'm a newbie wanting to root and uinstall CWR but have been confused after reading several How to's. My S7 came with v2.2 and I received and installed v3.2 on the first day.
I read a post mentioning this link: http://www.androidcentral.com/dell-streak-7-getting-bugfix-update. I "thought" that I followed the simple instructions but maybe not! I downloaded the file, renamed it "update.pkg" and while connected to my PC copied it to the root of my S7.
I put the S7 into recovery mode, selected install update.pkg from sdcard. Now this is where some of the confusion starts. While connected to my PC, nothing is refered to as a sdcard and I don't have one installed.
Okay back to the install. The S7 errors with four lines of text. It's looking for either "update.pkg" or "update.zip" with a file path: /mnt/sdcard/sdcard2/. I forget the exact wording but it's something like Failed or Can't Mount followed by the file path.
This left my S7 only booting to the Dell Logo and unable to connect to my PC beacause it wouldn't boot up. I had to do a factory reset which surprised me going back to v3.2 and not v2.2.
The file path mentioned above appears to show that it was looking for either file in the sdcard2 folder which is inside the sdcard folder. I had and since reinstalled the File Expert app which shows /mnt/sdcard/ and /mnt/sdacrd2/ or sdcard2 as a seperate folder not nested within the sdcard folder. Here again, the term/name "sdcard" is used and I don't have one. Is "sdcard" used to refer to the 16GB of internal memory? I assume so.
I'm not sure now if I would have used File Expert to copy "update.pkg" to the sdcard2 folder that I may have worked or not? On the linked page above, you see that I posted a comment about the problem and there is also another person has a screwed up S7 now too!
EDIT:
Nope, sdcard2 is indeed the optional sdcard slot which is empty and File Expert just errors.
When you boot into recovery and you are at the main menu with all the different options, choose the option to update from "internal" sdcard. The key is "internal" sdcard.
Sorry to not be more specific but I don't have my DS7 handy.
Good luck.

I believe that there was only one option to install the update.pkg from but the point or question is, where is it looking for the file at? It appears that it's looking on the sdcard2 which isn't there!
This makes me wonder now, when a procedure states to put a file on your sdcard, just actually what are they refering to? The internal memory sdcard or an optional plugged in sdcard?
They are referring to the removable sdcard. If you don't have one, I'd suggest picking one up. It doesn't have to be a 32GB or even a 16GB. Then, put the update.pkg file on the root of that SDcard.
The filesystems can be very confusing on the DS7. Try it with a removable SD card and you should have better luck.

Yeah, why refer to the internal memory as sdcard?? The procedure for installing this update doesn't mention that an optional sdcard must be used either.
There's another thread where they appeared to have done that and it still failed! I may just wait till Dell puts it out OTA.

Guide - how to increase internal memory without scripts

I had trouble myself trying to increase the internal memory of my galaxy ace s5830i, until i found this method which i believe is very simple and easey to follow and wanted to share with more people who might be facing same problem. It isnot my work, but since it is in spanish i took some time to translate it so you could use the same procedure.
******************************************************************************************************
Here a translation from a video in spanish. The author is hery reyes• I’m only translating the info, but I’ve tried it myself and worked for me.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=rgq4cNvTMng
Requirements:
-Make a complete backup of your rom from CWM
- Have root access
- This procedure should work with any ROM (Stock or Custom) however in some ROMS you might need to have active the “init.d” folder
- Root explorer or Root Browser (links available in the video)
- Partitioned SD card (you can do it with CWM or using Mini Tool Partition wizard.. or others..)
- Link2SD
Procedure:
Open Link2sd and allow Root Access
It will ask you about the partition to be used, select ext2 and it will ask you to reboot your phone. Please ignore and go to the main menu. From there, reboot manually your device.
Once it starts again, open Linkd2sd and the message about partition should not appear again. (If it does, choose ext3 and repeat the process, try with ext4 or fat 32 if previous do not work).
Once inside Link2sd, go to settings and take the mark off all the options. Then close Link2sd and we will not use it again from this point on. We will not need it anymore.
Go to Root Browser and allow Root Access.
Go to "/data/sdext2" and delete any folder you find inside. Go to the path "/data" and copy the 4 following folders "app", "data", "app-private", y "dalvik-cache", then go inside "/data/sdext2" and paste them. This process will take a little while so be patient.
Once the 4 folders are copied, we go inside "/data/sdext2"
y will do the same process for each of the folders. Go to “app” and long press the button, for a menu to appear, go to the last one that says –create link- then, go back to the main */data” folder and clieck on create, you will see a message saying the folder exists and if you want to combine them, click YES. Do the same for the other 3 folders. NOTE: If your sd card is less low capacity (less than 4), then better do it only with 3 folders and DON’T do it for the data folder (just leave it copied without the linking)
Then go out of the root browser and restart your device. When you go to Application manager, you will see you are using only around 60 of the total available and will be able to download many apps.
Simple Method For Me
1.Make Partition of SD Card.
2.After flashing Rom with custom kernel say(Rafeal's).
3.Flash CronMod Unofficial-By Styrke.zip.
4.That's it No use of Link2sd and all .
Install as much app you want .
Nice Guide, but i wanna ask u something..

why unlink!? you can take a dump of your SD-Ext and put it back like this:
1. dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p2 of=/sdcard/mmcblk0p2 (assuming that's your ext partition)
2. Buy new, bigger SD Card
3. Partition the same size you had for your SD-Ext (1GB for example)
4. Perform: dd if=/sdcard/mmcblk0p2 of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p2
5. Resize the partition!
So you don't have to work your way again to do all the work from scratch =P
I think the script is better then this (just my opinion)

SD card erasing

Hi guys
I'd like to erase my sd card. In the last time i've flashed several roms. Now, i have in system storage two part, one is emulated where is a 0 map with all file i have, end the other one is sdcard0, and there are also all files. Because i have only 5G free space, i want to erase one of them. I want to copy the necessary files to my pc, and the whole sd erase, after then copy back the folder i need. Can i do so? Don't will i erase my rom too?

First of all, do you have a real SD card? If so, you don't have the same phone as 99% of people in the HTC One subforum, because the HTC One has no SD card. But in short, nothing you can delete as non-root will hurt your ROM. If you're using a file manager and deleting stuff, you're pretty safe. You can get into more trouble with factory resets or "wipes".

Tnaks. It is of course a virtual sd card
You can format it via CWM/TWRP recovery. Back up first, format and put back what you need.
No it won't erase your Rom or wipe. If u use twrp, be sure you uncheck all marks except SDcard (think it's the bottom one)
Note that if you "format internal storage" in CWM, it *will* wipe all your app data. I don't think you want that.
There are "fake" folders on Android 4. The real folders you should have are:
/data/media/0
/data/media/obb (optional)
/data/media/legacy (this is empty on my phone)
You should have no other folders in /data/media. If you see other folders and delete them, it will probably solve your problem. If you don't, your problem may have a more complicated solution.

CWM RECOVERY This is from Takenover83's post
#4 First download the ClockworkMod Recovery Image here: CWM Recovery Image Download
#5 Upload the image to your external SD card/ Micro SD and change the name of the file to " update.img "
#6 use a file manager like root explorer or ES file manager or whatever and right click the file and chmod 644 /system/etc/install-recovery.sh (This is extremely important it will not work otherwise)
#7 I just simply plugged my SD card into the tablet and it updated automaticaly but if that isnt the case for you go into the stock recovery and Choose the option to update via rkimage from external storage
Use EXT SD card as Internal Memory
#8 You must be rooted.
#9 Download Root Explorer ( only if you dont have it) from playstore(paying ) or use ES File Explorer ( free) from playstore. Then instal it.
#10 Download vold.fstab from here Moded Vold.Fstab for the Hisense Sero 7 LT , copy it to your sd card.

Some people like to have nandroid backups after rooting their device and as far as ROMs this device may be low priced but after you do the mem swap with 32gb and having a 1.6ghz dual core your batting 100% maybe people will figure out the financial advantage here
Oh that's true, I'm not a developer or anything near it. But I get what you're saying if I take a nandroid back up, than there's not as much worry about me tinkering either as I could just restore my backup +1 to you.

Nandroid backup or RKImage stock?
May you be much blessed, kind sir!
I don't know what your status is yet on Jan 10th but I have successfully fixed a Sero 7 LT for a friend's daughter using the stock recovery bootloader menu and an RK image. Make sure your Sero is fully charged overnight on the 2 amp adapter that comes with it. You will know it is fully charged because if you unplug it and then plug it back in after 10 seconds, there will be no "charging" symbol that comes up on the screen after about 10 seconds from plugging it in. It will stay dark.
Here is the link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=48293563&postcount=39
Download Option #1 from Mediafire
Use 7Zip to expand, you'll need at PC card reader adapter for your Micro SDHC and possibly a USB to SDHC reader. For some reason my HP laptop doesn't like to read adapted micros in the normal slot on the laptop, so I used a MediaGear XtraDrive MGXS-200-HC on my Win7x64.
Once 7Zip has expanded the .img file rename it to update.img and then place it on the root of your micro SDHC. I did a quick format with mine beforehand just to be sure there were no other files that were going to interfere.
Do the normal bootloader from your Sero 7 LT: Volume Down & Power until Hisense, then with Android on his back, POWER FIRST and VOLUME UP once.
The option is down about 3/4 of the way "RKimage"
It will be looking for Update on root, which is the only option. Select with Power button and it will tell you it found it and would like to verify. Select OK and then wait. The first time it goes through the file, nothing will happen. It will CRC the file, boot to the spinning circle screen as if it is a bootloop and then the screen will go blank.
Simply press the power button quickly to turn the screen back on and it will tell you it has found the file it needs and are you ready to restore the update.image. Touch yes, and the whole process will start over. This time when Android finishes, it will boot correctly and ask you for your language input as if right from the store!
Good luck!
Who knows if it is working or not?
I followed the steps listed here for using the external memory card as internal memory. Unfortunately, the only thing I can definitively say about it is that it will make ES File Explorer stop working.

I have been using ES FILE EXPLORER ever since I did this and have not had that issue. Weird!
Still can't get it to work
I followed the instructions and tried to use the vfold file you created so I can use my external SD card as internal memory. It still won't work. When I try to move your vfold file to the etc folder, it won't let me, saying that it is a read-only drive. This is very frustrating. I can't imagine what on earth Hisense was thinking when they made the SD card internal. Isn't there a way to just switch the names of the SD card and the external SD card?

Its not his sense its the jellybean os that's makes the card internal. Are you rooted? You have to be rooted for this procedure, then you move the vold file using root explorer or some other program that will allow you to change from read only to write.
I desperately want to install CWM to my Hisense Zero 7 Lite but in your instructions I have NO IDEA what "chmod" means. Once I figure that step out I should be good. Thank you in advance.
That is the permissions you need a file explorer then get the option for the file and choose permissions and change the permission and save it
CWM Help : (
Holy cow it has taken me a week to figure this out and now I feel like a total idiot. I was trying to change the permissions of the file "update.img" which it would not allow me. It never occurred to me in days that "/system/etc/install-recovery.sh" WAS the file I needed to change permissions for. I've read that line at least a hundred times, ha ha. Once it clicked that I was trying to alter the wrong file it took me literally 5 seconds to fix the issue and FINALLY install CWM. Thank you for this post and for replying to my question. Awesome. Now I shall go wipe the stupid sweat off my brow.
Question about internal memory
Hey all, thanks to this excellent guide I now have my tablet rooted. Now that I'm rooted I've been using SnapPea to move apps to the SD card, which was my goal all along. But since I'm still new to this, I was wondering if it would be better to follow the part of the guide that says "Use EXT SD card as Internal Memory." Is there any difference between moving apps to SD with SnapPea and making the SD internal memory? It would be nice if it was all one block and I didn't have to choose what went where (plus some apps don't work right if they are on the SD). Thanks!
Cant get my Sero 7 lite to use the sd card as the storage
Hey there, done lots of reading. I got the tablet rooted, (checked with root checker and titanium backup) HOWEVER I cant get Super user to update its binary, it keeps saying fail. I can access the root and move stuff around, but no permission window pops up. I did the vold file and got it transferred into the external SD card, and system and etc folder. Now if I reboot it, it gets stuck on the Smart screen unless I remove the SD card.
The tablet is now reading the internal flash as if it were an external SD card, and not showing a nand flash. I'm quite stuck. I assume its probably a little thing that needs changed but i cant find it anywhere!
16GB Internal SD...with apps?
So I've got my 16GB SD card showing as the internal SD.
Now, I can't install/move apps to the new internal SD storage.
How can I fix this?
Thanks!
First off, I apologize for my noob-ness. but I have no idea what "chmod 644 /" means. How do I initiate the chmod 644? I have managed to root my sero 7 lite, but CWM didn't install.
Also are there any custom roms using a newer version of android available yet? Thanks a lot!

I'm trying to make an external SD card act as internal. For some reason, I get a fail to copy error when trying to copy the vold.fstab file to the etc folder. It says it doesn't have permission. Any ideas? Did the rooting process not take properly?
http://i.imgur.com/ihkaGZi.png
EDIT: I managed to finally make it work, by downloading another superuser app. This one simply called Superuser. I was able to copy to the root folders and change the file permission in the system folder after this through the ES File Explorer app. How do I know that the system is using the external sd card as internal now? In settings it still looks the way it did before.
We do have a kernel source for this tablet.
http://www.hisense-usa.com/support/firmware.asp
Search for Sero 7 LT
With that we could get CM13 and what not ported over. Something tells me given the info @dolorespark mentioned with the Sero 7 Pro kernel source having quite a bit of bad coding that the Sero 7 LT will have the same issues potentially.
Hi guys and gals, I have a Hisense sero 7 le e2371, as far as I can tell it is the same as the lt lite, the difference is it is the Australian version! My question is, how to install twrp, it is rooted, but i cannot install anything via stock recovery, no fastboot mode, no bootloader mode! Any help will be greatly appreciated. PS, it is running kitkat 4.4.2, i ultimately want to upgrade it to lollipop or even marshmallow, one day, lol thanks in advance
