What are the advantages to flashing one of the new up and coming Gingerbread Roms over staying on one of the many stable Froyo Roms that are currently available ?

Haven't noticed any cons unless you consider amazing battery life one. Also the performance on my phone has never been better no lag anywhere.
Try it you wont regret.
Here is a link that explains some improvements with GB...

Samsung added some new improvements to touchwiz I believe as well as some other tweaks.

Thanks for the responses so far. And hopefully more will come, specifically from those who are running a new gingerbread rom, as I have yet to jump onto the ginger-train...but I'm sure I will soon.
You know how people will have what they think is a crappy old computer, but then a good tech guy gets rid of all of the viruses and updates the software and it runs so much better and they'll exclaim, "It's just like a new computer!"
Well, that's what Gingerbread feels like. The smoothness and the battery life make me feel like I have a dual core processor in there!
ginger bread pros:
optimisations that vastly improve the performance of the hummingbird
brighter screen
better color balance
no lag
better battery life stock vs stock
better browser
better market
better video player
new, shiny, better,
cons:
problem with proximity sensor on samsung release
framework doesnt allow the haptic feedback to work on captivate home button yet
some kernel mods havent been ported yet
2.2 pros:
lots of roms
lots of development
lots of kernels
roms available with amazing battery life do to mods
cons:
slower
laggier

If XXJVK had been a flop, it may not have been a big deal to me as I am very much happy with stock JPY. But since XXJVK is nothing less than awesome, great battery life, eye-candy features, etc., yeah it became a very BIIIIG deal for me to have gingerbread to munch everyday.

Yep!!!
2.2.1 -> Gingerbread is like Win xp->Win 7 .
I hope that makes the point clear .
What matters is how well Samsung mess up the original code and make it suitable for SGS. And in the process
If they can fix the battery drain injected in froyo and change the filesystem from RFS to EXT (it is going to be a very big deal for all SGS owners)
It doesn't matter if Sammy removes all Gingerbread goodies (IMO), if all the security features of gingerbread is there in the ROM then GINGERBREAD is really a great deal for me
Gingerbread is not big deal for me but milestone for phone is it important yes all updates are as they depict the future so no more updates no.more phone.

it is..
this ROM is super fast and super smooth.. memory management is better..
battery life is still mystery to me..
if the stock ROM is this good,, imagine what Devs like Darky can do to this ROM..
yes the biggest deal for me cause of battery and speed. with all existing features.
Battery life has gotten so much longer with the Samsung Gingerbread beta. That's essential to me...
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA Premium App
its definetly the best rom and because gingerbread has so many things under the hood it was for me very important, battery life and memory management as the previous poster said are just two of them .
I don't agree with what Darky can do about it , i would say more what hardcore, supercurio,.... so the kernel devs can do about it when the sources are avaible.

No. But anything higher than 2.2 is.
We are still on 2.2 official, and the performance is a disgrace.
Well I used to be perfectly happy with jpy and couldn't care less about gingerbread because I was thinking of getting the sgs2 when it comes out. But after trying out jvk I think I'll hang on to my sgs for a little longer.

+1 i must agree, i am eager to try it but im baffled by all the posts, il wait for some more features, like decent stable kernel and a range of themes other than deodexed stock versions.
Im thinking of trying out the Miui ROM its now stable and looks pretty awesome.
But as an answer to the thread... NO gingerbread isnt such a big deal for me. id say there are custom ROMs out there with plenty more features and support. so il wait a little longer before i try it.
It's good to be "up to date", but there in nothing really usefull in this update. Speed is the same (=not so nice w/o lagfix) as in 2.2.1, and so as everything else.

Just so happens that JVK does all that and well for me.

Besides personal preference, general file systems, what are the benefits of one over the other?
I already know that CM7 is different from all other (gingerbread) ROMs since it isn't based on Samsung's ROM, but since the captivate is a Samsung phone, would that mean ROMs based on Samsung's original ROM (so pretty much all ROMs besides CM7) would be more optimal in terms of use?
Sent from my SGH-I896 using XDA App
that is probably an accurate statement, does not mean cm7 and miui are not awesome
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA Premium App
i had been on cm7 for 2 months or so and flashed continuum5 yesterday. so far i'm liking the samsung-based gingerbread better, but mainly for reasons like battery-life when using wifi. cm7 has tons of tweaks through their customized settings. i'm sure that cm7 will be back on my phone as soon as they incorporate some of the "fixes" that are in the gingerbread code that was released last week by samsung.
Cyanogen mod is based off of the nexus s 2.3.3 and the nexus s is extremely similar to the captivate in terms of hardware so it is quite optimized without any modification at all.

this statement really needs to stop being spread around. CM7 is not based on Nexus S, it is based on AOSP/CM code. it just so happens that the Nexus S is as well. it's as valid to say it's based on Nexus S as it would be to say it's based on Nexus One or G1 code (i.e. not valid). The AOSP code leaves a lot stuff out for our phones, such as GPIO's and several drivers, so we're using samsung's drop to try and organize and improve all of it.
OP, difference between CM7 an Samsung ROM == do you want the ability to configure and easily theme for your phone (without reflashing just for a theme) or do you want to not worry about battery life? that's basically what it comes down to.
So which has the better battery life?

it's already been improved. quite frankly, just TRY the ROM's and see which you like better. this whole "will-I-or-won't-I try flashing something" is kind of pointless. no one can tell you what will work best for you or which you will like more except you. with every ROM, every modem, every kernel your mileage may vary, so instead of asking which is "better" (which is so amazingly subjective), just try the ones you're curious about.

I found them to be the slowest.
The ota is a nice feature though.
Im quite happy with my current combo: jw1+semaphore+thunderbolt (on ext4)
The fastest rom is cm7 but the ram managent is bad so you would have to install thunderbolt to make it fast the whole time instead of the first hour(s).
Cm7 has not so good battery life, but if youre fine with charging twice a day its the one to choose

Just stay at JVR or upgrade it to a newer official ROM.
Only in this case u'll get phone with a full set of working features, especially camera and hardware accelerated video playback.
Yeah, official ROMs are maybe not as smooth and don't have such comfortable UI, but at least it works as supposed without any big issues.
i9000 is my 2nd device, first was Spica, so i used to use lots of different roms and my experience says that there's no ROMs better then official one.
I'm using Mintberry MIUI with the Thunderbolt script and I'm finding it to be pretty smooth. CM7 is also very competent in performance.
However, the thing with these AOSP ROMS is that they lack the Samsung framework so video playback, camera, etc don't run as smoothly.
I've always found stock ROMs to be the best overall ROM as long as you flash a kernel like Semaphore or Tornado, I just like to use Mintberry MIUI because its aesthetics suit me better than stock

The predictable Cyanogen answer with all based on Cyanogen.
Easy to flash, stock, fast, light on the battery, has the cooler stock Android ICS look. CM10 coming 'round the corner with JellyBean.
Not recommended for those that love TouchWiz and things like S-Memo.
Well at first i was scared of flashing CM based roms cuz i thought i.d loose s.memo.....but then i took the plunge n believe me m really happy with it.....

You've got a few S-Pen tuned alternatives, like Papyrus. But the gain in performance and battery is really good when you compare it to TouchWiz ROMs. Adding the fact that IT'S SAFE, meaning you can flash/wipe all you want (the CM team did a WAY better job than Samsung on that) and...the choice is pretty obvious for me, really...
If you're going to look into TouchWiz ROMs, make sure you either choose one with a safe kernel included or flash a safe kernel afterwards (I think speedmod...??? Not really sure though, you'll have to research that)
Im using Criskelo v9 rom with GL- Notecore v8.1 (OC) kernel, everything working as it should and the speed is awesome as far as battery goes ive only been running the kernel a few days and it seems ok. I charge my phone every night so battery life is no issue here.Everbody's usage differs tho, if your after longer battey life i wouldnt opt for an OC kernel.

Actually S-memo and the other sammy apps for the s-pen are better than the likes of papyrus and other apps. So for those who want/need s-memo stick with touchwiz based roms.
you guys can get angry with me but im honest to my heart,...as of now there is no rom that is completely good..im going back to gb
all tw ics roms have one major problem: SCROLLING aint smooth enough( ive tried em all)..they stutter like hell!!
and cm9 roms arent that great for battery life...
cm 10 aint fully functional...
all in all i hate it that samsung has created a wonderful device with awesome specs but totally screwed the software releases throughout...to make it even worse is black clipping!!.. im just irritated with this device, dont feel like owning a premium device...im about to sell it hopefully note 2 is better coz the spen and screen size are unbeatable!!!
Stock ROM is the best.
Hi your best option is to go for a Touchwiz rom which you can highly customize during installation. Chrack's and Criskelo are very good fully customizable rooms. They come with Aroma installation to let you remove a lot of bloat ware before installation.
Touchwiz roms also have the best kernels around. Like Note core and Speed mod. These give a very significant improvement in speed n battery. Of course cyanogen based roms r good. But the prob is u will be lacking some native drivers Samsung has integrated into the roms for the best performance. For ex, divx support is there by default, NTFS file format for SD card can be achieved, better drivers for display n graphics etc.
Touchwiz roms can crush cyanogen roms in benchmarks as well. Cyanogen can seem very smooth and fluid. But with the right launcher (apex or nova) u can easily give the rom a stock ICS feel as well. Hope this helped. Cheers

The best ROM is the one that works best for you on your phone. Try a few out and decide for yourself.
And posts like this never belong in Development.
First things first. This is NOT a "Which ROM is the best".
I want to know which version of Android under any circumstances, and almost specifically about specifications, will, does, or should run best on a Rogers i896 captivate. I have tried many different roms ranging from 2.2, 2.3, 2.3.3, 2.2.3, 4.01, 4.03, 4.1.1 etcetc and so far here are my observations:
The higher up in version, the better the battery life was, but the more glitches/issues/(sometimes lag) I encountered.
For the more technical people: Which version of android should run best on a Captivate considering things like bootloader etc (stuff I know nothing about).
Again, I'm not asking what ROM is better, and I understand that every ROM is different, but I want this from a technical standpoint!
Okay, thanks for taking the time to read the above paragraph and I'm looking forward to the knowledge.
For me, version 2.3.7 (CM 7.2) runs the best. Just bone stock CM. But then again that might be because I don't use this phone that often but it feels like it just runs better.

I would like to know too. I put cm10 on my gfs phone and have had problems. What are most used gingerbread roms? I have looked through the forums but can't find anything solid, others input would help alot I had an epic myself just got gs3. The most stable daily I ran on my epic was 2.3.7. Would like something for her she doesn't ***** about.
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
I never ran 4.0.x due to fear of the notorious "encryption unsuccessful" bug, so I can't comment on that one, but now running 4.1.2 (Slim Bean 2.7) and it is definitely smoother, faster, and more stable than any 2.3.x ROM ever was for me. My GB ROMs used to slow down and eventually hang, requiring a reboot every 2-3 days. 4.1.x has never done that-- it just runs and runs. It's so good, it has pretty much cured my previous thoughts of upgrading to a new phone.
As for the bootloaders, they only matter during boot, as the name implies. After that, they don't matter. Just make sure you have the GB bootloaders and you can use any ROM you want.
slim bean 2.7 works wonders for me and so did the previous version. Skip google now and you will be golden, at least form my experience.

There is no specific version that runs naturally better. The smoothness of the rom depends on the developer and what changes he/she made to stock. No version of android after Froyo is naturally better than the others. While it is true that new versions of android bring new features, a good rom will run well regardless of version. This is the reason that stock is usually much more stable than custom roms. Stock is built for stability, so this boils down to which rom works best on your phone and with your preferences. The glitches and lag happen because most of the newer versions of android were never actually released for the captivate, so developers are porting from other sources. Another reason for glitches and lag is the limitations of captivate hardware. There is a reason why it does not receive any updates from samsung anymore. In samsung's eyes the phone's hardware has reached its potential. The captivate was released about 2 years ago, so according to Moore's law the software being released today is for devices that are 2 times more powerful. The fact that jelly bean is able to run at all on this phone is a feat to be proud of so kudos to the developers.
Also, bootloader does not have that much of an impact on performance. The bootloader is just the code that "loads the boot", or turns on the phone. The only thing that changing bootloader affects is compatibility with certain roms.
PS-I know some of the things seem unconnected to your original question, but I wanted to help you completely understand my answer.

Pretty much... I would have to say after using the Captivate on all versions except Eclair that Gingerbread runs the best. Not stock Gingerbread, but CM7 Gingerbread. While ICS/JB feel fast and smooth because of the hardware acceleration and nice animations, the system feels much slower overall and is often subjected to lag/lockups (partially due to things mentioned by the previous post). Things like Google now and Chrome were almost unusable for me. I would attribute the Gingerbread affinity due to the fact that the Captivate and Nexus S are very close hardware-wise, and that hardware was designed to run Gingerbread. CM7 was very fast, and if it weren't for the appearance of GB compared to JB, I would have stuck with it.
The stock gingerbread was getting worse by the day that's why I convinced her to put a rom on it. I never touched anything beyond gingerbread on my epic because I needed the phone to work for work. I will look into a gingerbread rom for stability.

For pure battery life I think Fasty KK4 was an excellent Gingerbread. I remember actually being blown away by the battery life.
As far as great performance, Team Nyx ICSSGS was the most rock solid! AOSP 4.0 was light and really fast with decent battery life. All in all, I would say that is my overall favorite of the roms I've run through the ol' cappy.
