New beta Thumb Keyboard 4 (Update May 14 - new beta) - Xoom Themes and Apps

EDIT (May 14): New beta released (beta 4). This will be the final beta. The market version will be released begin next week
The new beta contains a new customizable toolbar and a new keyboard for one handed operation.
----------
Hi,
Because the expiration date of the current beta will expire tomorrow and because I've postponed the final release with one or two weeks, I decided to publish a new beta.
New in this beta:
* Possibility to resize the width of the right and left keyblocks. Very convenient. You can now adjust the keyboard fully to the range of your thumbs.
* New themes.
* New regular qwerty keyboard, so one can also enjoy all the features on a standard keyboard layout.
* small bug fixes
The beta can be downloaded from thumb4beta.blogspot.com

awesome, downloading now

Downloading. Its a great second keyboard for those longer emails

thanks alot... this has been great so far

I posted something on the Androidcentral on what I think would make it a better keyboard, I still stand by that but I take back what I said, this keyboard is pretty awesome. I just needed to get adapted to the style is all. Thank you so much I will buy when it comes out of beta.

Nice... I love how I can press the button to adjust the stylebof keyboard. Awesome. I love it. Perfect.

thanks for the new beta! gonna give it more tries, but I gotta say, SwiftKey predicts insanely well. I'll compare both again

This keyboard makes its ten times easier to type. Awesome work

Bought this keyboard one day after owning my Xoom cause the stock one just doesn't cut it and swype is unavailable. After using this for only 5 minutes and setting things up how i wanted, i won't even bother with swype if it comes out for the xoom. This keyboard ROCKS. All the little changes and mods you can make are just superb. I wish all keybaords were this adaptable and modifyable. Seriously.
You did an awesome job on this. Will totally install the beta when i get home from work. Love the current build in the market, can't wait to take this for a spin.

Simply - thank you. I will be buying the released version as soon as it is in the market.

Love this release. addresses all my issues from Beta2

now if I could combine this with swift key, I would be set! Honestly however is there an option to put the space bar on both sides?

I just wanted to say that since the first beta I have used and enjoyed using the keyboard. Its very awesome and works great. The only thing that bothers me is having the special keys and numbers in the middle but I am getting used to it. I have my xoom locked in landscape so sometimes typing 1 handed sucks
Keep up the awesome work
James

would it be possible to include a checkbox to remove the numberpad from the middle of the keyboard in landscape. With the market app i can type one handed in landscape mode since there is no keypad in the middle, i can just walk my fingers to the keys with ease, with no effort, not really even needing to look. However with the keypad in the middle, all the other keys are smaller, so it is much harder and i actually have to focus now. LOL Other then that i am loving this.

If you shrink the left and right keyblocks in the settings (see keyboard dimensions), the keys in the middle move to the left and right a bit.

Well that's a good idea. Will look into it. Nevertheless maybe not, maybe I will count that one as a nice feaure of that keyboard.

i'm really liking this keyboard... just needs to get better used to its layout.
the one problem i'm having are the direction keys at the bottom when in portrait mode; they usually don't register correctly, registering a space key instead.
also, i don't agree with the G key existing in the right side in portrait mode and not in landscape mode. IMHO, this should be consistent in both modes.
as a sugestion, i would like an hybrid language mode like used in swiftkey's, where you don't have to switch languages when using more than one, auto-complete used both.
thanks, keep the good work!

Hey mate wicked keyboard, when it says expires dose that mean it will stop working on that date?
Cheers

Best Keyboard Replacement..

Ok so I basically tried all keyboards that are on the market.. I have swype and slide it as well.. But I find myself going back and forth between all my keyboards and can not get comfortable sticking with one. I use a keyboard for like a week, if that, and switch to another one or search for hopefully a newest one. Its like I can't find one that suits me..
Does anybody have any recommendations on this??
Thanks for your help =)

I find Swype the easiest...Anyway keyboard choice is just everyone's personal preference. Just use one you find comfortable.
I like swype but don't like how you have to go over certain letters twice for a particular word such as; "choosing", "messages", " button", etc...
If I had to pick between SlideIt or Swype, I would have to go with SlideIT.. But I don't like how you have to press the "?123" button for symbols and numbers.
I agree that swype is easier, but I guess I'm jus to picky lol..
swype for me as well. but i saw something about this guy installing the droid x keyboard on his nexus. it has multi touch... i believe he also got the apk somewhere in here.

You don't have to go over them twice. You can just scribble on the letter. Go look at swype hints and tips. They got some really neat things to speed up texting.
But I use swype or better keyboard.

I forgot I was in a Nexus forum. :X I probably need to take my post-happy self back to the Dream. Either way, go look at their tips and tricks. If you can memorize them all and learn to use them out of habit... NO ONE you know without Swype will be able to text faster than you.
AS for built in keyboard, I like it. It has NICE response speed and when every other keyboard lags, it doesn't. Like you said, though, the keys are just too small. :|

... Hahahaha! that made my night, i needed that laugh lmao
i knew the basics of swype and had swype for awhile now and i guess i didnt know about other tricks and what not, thanks for sheadin some light on that.. ill go check them out now.. im sure its on the swype website, so thats where ill look first =]
Again, thanks! i hope i can get used to this swype thing because i find myself thinking where to slide my finger when using slideit and swype.. when i just use a regular keyboard my fingers seem to jus "flow" like its just reaction (if that makes sense).. i know where all the keys are based on memory so i dont think about it when i type, swype on the other hand.. I do lol.
Im sure its just a learning curve.. so when i get frustrated doing swype, ill stick to it and not switch to another keyboard so itll become 2nd nature..
... All in all i appreciate it man, ima go check out the tips now lol
Time to beat that record!! haha.. =]

... I didnt know like 85% of what i just saw about swype!! HOT DAM!
Im really gonna push myself into learning Swype to its full potential now! OMG...
Swype is faster in portrait mode, plus it feels very natural once you're used to it. On the downside, typos are a pain to redo, usually requiring you to retype the whole thing. Plus, there's almost no spellcheck ability.
In landscape, I can type faster with Better Keyboard. I'd wish they'd incorporate the punction in the suggestion bar, but I'm good with press and hold.
I love Swype. I switched to it about a week ago and I can type really fast!!
I was using HTC_IME and I still might be using it if it supported multitouch. I'm waiting for the Droix X keyboard to be ported over, that looks promising.

I haven't yet seen ANY keyboard on my Nexus (2.1, stock, not rooted) work with multitouch.. I use HTC IME that was modified from here to include smileys and a few other things.. Works well for me.
If you looking for a non swype style keyboard, I really like Smart Keyboard Pro. Its my daily driver, although I do also have Swype installed.

[Q] Best keyboard other than Swype

Some how since backing up my phone and removing the bloatware, I've managed to delete the Android Keyboard.
Is there anyway to redownload this keyboard? I prefer it to the Samsung Keyboard hands down. Or perhaps there is another keyboard you would recommend that I can download via the Market or elsewhere?
Thank you
I like swiftkey...comes a close second to Swype for me.

The swiftkey beta is definitely worth a look. I prefer swype, personally.

So is there no way to get the Android Keyboard back? Even after I restore the backup prior to the bloatware removal, it always seems to disappear. Could I be deleting something causing it to go away?

Thanks SOOOO Much !!! SwiftKey is AMAZING! I used to like the stock android keyboard because it was fast, had good prediction, and was black so more batt efficient.
Swiftkey's prediction is just about two fold better than the stock android. The only things I would change is to add a D-pad when you hit the alt button, and making the keyboard more black to save on batt. (unlikely it will get optimized for SAMOLED screens though)
SlideIt keyboard best of all

I second this particular keyboard. I find myself using this on a regular basis.
I use Smart Keyboard Pro and I love it. Great prediction and just has a good feel. I haven't tried the Droid X keyboard yet, I'll try it out.
Swype is great, but my vote also goes to Smart Keyboard Pro. I've tried almost all of them, and this one is a keeper.
For me, it's really hard to choose.
I like the Samsung keyboard because of multitouch and I feel like I can type faster on it, but the autotext is a pain.
The Droid X keyboard is nice especially because of multitouch but it is really stupid when it comes to predicting text..
The stock android keyboard is okay, just no multitouch.
I'd say the Droid X keyboard wold be my pick. I usually use that.
-Just my two cents.
i, too, am loving the DroidX over Swiftkey
I actually love the default Samsung keyboard in 2.2, I just wish I could switch the Period (.) to the other side of the space bar as I tend to hit it half of the time instead of the space bar with my right thumb.
Anybody know of a keyboard that is exactly the same as the default Samsung Keyboard in 2.2 but with those buttons switched?

[Q] Suitable replacement keyboard?

I've been looking for a third-party keyboard that's suitable for the Bionic. I know this device has a higher than normal resolution, so I don't know if some of the more-known keyboards would work properly if they can't scale to the proper resolution. Plus, I don't like the all white stock keyboard layout, I'd like to have something either darker or that can be customized. Anyone have suggestions?
I have been using "Better Keyboard 8" for almost 3yrs.
Swiftkey X, some of the best word prediction I've seen. It scans your old inputs in order to automatically add words to the dictionary, and better predict what you're looking for.

+9001. Best keyboard app I've used. They've got a newer version in private beta right now as well.
I think the stock keyboard is amazing, if you just dont like the colors, you can just edit them in photoshop, theyre just a bunch of .pngs
Try Thumb Keyboard... It has a ton of themes and tweaks to play with, and on a phone as big as the Bionic, having the option of a split keyboard would be great! I use it on my Galaxy Tab and my D3, and love it.

The darky keyboard looks amazing. There is a thread started for it specifically that now has an install zip. Huge thanks to Versatile1 for this

Also the gingerbread keyboard in the market looks very good too. This keyboard also takes up the least amount of screen space when portrait.

Best Keyboard App?

What keyboard do you guys find the most responsive on the Note?
I swore by Smart Keyboard Pro on my Dell Streak as it could keep up with my typing and seemed like the most responsive on the Streak at the time, but I find it nowhere near as responsive on the Note.
I recently started using Go Keyboard on the Note and have so far found it much more responsive. I set it up with the midnight theme, 4 landscape keyboard height and no pop up characters when typing and I find it has been the only keyboard that has been able to keep up with me if I try to type at crazy speeds. Great things about it are that it is totally free and very customizable!
Let me know your thoughts.
Swiftkey was the one I went for after testing all of them. The fastest for me.

I already tried Swiftkey and didn't get on with it as well as Go Keyboard. I remember trying Go Keyboard on the Streak and not liking it as much as Smart Keyboard Pro back then, so it is either a device difference or maybe the Go Development Team have made some improvements since.
swiftkey x, give you the best word to choose when writing and the fast one to.
Ps: you can even reduce the space it show by the keyboard on the screen.

Great tip! I just tried the one by VLLWP and it seems to respond very well to crazy fast typing. I think I will stick with it for now until something better comes along.
my keyboard
This is thumbs keyboard with my settings on it...... I think this thing is really fast
I like Thumb Keyboard. Swiftkey not so much; it's a little too smart for me.
Right now i'm using Swiftkey because of the arrow buttons. Im sort of happy with it.
i just downloaded the ICS keyboard.
I must say it is very good!
I was using smart keyboard. although it is fast, but i found it laggy, like if i type really fast it won't detect some of the letters.
but with ICS it detect all the letters i press!

Even I have the same question. I am using the "AI keyboard" free version and I am pretty much loving it. I liked Go Keyboard as well.
But whichever app I use, I miss the handwriting mode for S-Pen. So I keep switching back to Samsung keyboard now and then.
I like Go keyboard best.
I like Perfect Keyboard. It's the quickest and smoothest for me, all other keyboards lag unfortunately...
used better keyboard for a while, it was good but it lacks arrow keys.
then i started to use smart keyboard and once customized, best keyboard yet, well worth the buy
I'm also with Thumb keyboard, very good one!
I used to use Smart Keyboard Pro on my SGS2 and Dell Streak, worked fine. It has a lot of lag on the SGN.
I now use Ultra Keyboard. The best and most configurable Love it.
Bought SwiftKey X, absolutely fantastic auto correction and unlike all the other android keyboards that I tried, doesn't lag when you hit a key.

ICS keyboard rocks

Just a heads up, a number of developers have released AOSP based versions of the Ice Cream Sandwich keyboard into the Market. I downloaded the one by Binary Bulge and it's just perfect on the NC. The predictions are better than any tap keyboard I've ever user other than SwiftKey. And unlike the Gingerbread keyboard, it actually sizes properly to our tablets. I am starting to find very credible the rumour that Google included BlindType technology in ICS. Go ahead and try it out...you'll be impressed. It even manages to auto correct if two words get mashed together by accident.
Sent from my Nook Color!
Yeah they've been released for a while, I'm using the same one (by Binary Bulge) on all my devices and it works great.
It looks a bit funny on the Nook Color though, the keys are huge in comparison to other keyboards on the NC. I guess that's not a bad thing though.
IMO a split keyboard is a must have for a tablet. I prefer Thumb Keyboard.

Hmm, on CM7.1 at 160 dpi, the keys are big but not excessive. It's the right size for a tablet keyboard, and similar to the size presented by Swype. The native Gingerbread keyboard comes up far undersized.

I think the native GB keyboard is pretty much perfect. I use this ICS keyboard on my phone and I think it works great, good prediction and speed, etc. But on my NC it just makes it look like a gigantic, oversize phone. No reason for the letters to be so huge.
I suspect once we get ICS on some tablets there will be a much better keyboard. For now I am sticking with the GB keyboard in CM7.1.

I guess it's a matter of preference. The GB keyboard in CM7.1 is basically the same height as a phone keyboard, but I find the ergonomics of a 7" tablet are such that I need more height than that to be able to use it effectively.
The ICS Keyboard sure is something that I absolutely love, kinda happy someone backported it to our properly working CM7 Gingerbread.
It's what will keep me going until Dalingrin and Fattire fixed their CM9 Build up to be a good replacement.
I tried it and must say they already did a fair bunch of work, it was a nice testdrive and the sweet taste of the ICS keyboard remains with that wonderful backport.
I tried the ics keyboard from johntanmi. I found the predictions to be near useless. For instance when typing out "pred" it suggests Pres, pred, or pared. Why not "prediction, predictions, predator..." etc.
FlexT9 is my favourite by far.
another vote here for split keyboard! it has an ICS theme too
good find! Thanks for this!
What I hate about the stock keyboard is very few long-press shortcuts, like /, numbers, etc.. I HATE having to go into a separate mode for them.
And the ICS keyboard has a bunch of keys in the bottom-right area which I keep hitting by accident.. I dunno why but I kept hitting "," repeatedly last night on ICS.
I think I'll just keep using Swiftkey X

Yes, I seriously missed this for a while after switching from the HTC_IME_mod. But then I figured out something.
The numbers on the stock GB keyboard are there for long-press, same for the ICS keyboard. Most punctuation is there in the prediction area. Missing are "/", "@" and some others that might be useful, but most of what you normally need is there without a long-press.
Just in case you may not have noticed - for numbers and punctuation you can now hold on the ?123, glide to the character you want, let go, and it snaps back to the letter keyboard. Quicker than three taps.
