I'll do a more detailed review tonight and switch out the photos with better ones too.
First impressions: Holy crap this is huge!
It is very reminiscent of the commuter series for the HTC Hero (of course). However, this one feels a bit more "rugged".
The case has the standard plugs for the headphones and microusb ports. It also has the raised areas for the volume rocker and on/off button. The front is well protected and thick enough to not really have to worry about placing the phone face down.
It was much easier to attach than the Sedio Innocase! And conversely, it's a PAIN to remove (which is a good thing!)
It takes about the same amount of force to slide open the keyboard. It's borderline too hard for me.
Oh, the keyboard lights aren't completely covered either! Granted you still can't see them looking directly down at the phone, you can see them if you tilt the phone back a little.
My initial qualms are:
1) The case is slightly too long for the phone. The top of the case that is around the keyboard is loose. Not just a little, but it looks like it wasn't even meant for this phone.
2) Like the mini-usb plug on the Hero's commuter series, the micro-usb plug on the Shift's commuter series doesn't want to stay in.
3) Since the back side is beveled and it's semi-hard to slide out, it sometimes takes a couple tries because it keeps slipping out of my hands.
Nit-picks:
1) Backside cover is off-center (flash/camera/speaker aren't centered in their respective cutouts)
2) No silicone on the front so when it's face down it slides around easily (compared to the hero which had silicone bumpers on the front)
Where did you get it from? Still says preorder on my end

It's does a very good job of covering up the phone and not being loose.
Got mine today, as wizputer noted the mini-usb isn't snug enough to remain in the port. Otherwise, very impressed with the design and construction of the case.
got mine in today, very pleased. although it was a little bit of a b*^&h to put on. After getting it on I noticed the usb plug being a pain, and the power button seems to need a lil extra force to actually click, but other than that love it. I feel safe now
Good review, disappointed, love my Otterbox's for my EVO and HD2. The split covers though, Shift and Tilt (from experience), just do not seem to provide the same kind of coverage but I do not know what else they could do to make them better.

Actually you just have to know how to make it stay there's a little trick to it when you close it. You have to kinda pull the thing up a little bit and then slide it in and stays. That's how mine works anyways ..

I just always wiggle the flap into the port, best case by far would definately recomend. ORDER FROM OTTERBOXS WEBSITE, when it first came out I tried it from amazon (it was $10 less) but the expected shipping date was in june.
No I'm not using Tapatalk... I'm using the XDA Premium app, cause I got balls.
Be careful with the otterbox guys, dropped mine for the first time today and 3 of the 4 clips to hold the back on broke, making the case absolutely useless..... waste of 30 bucks!

When. That happens call otterbox and they will no auestions asked replace it usually takes 1week shipping I've had 5 so fardo this and most recently they sent me 2x so I don't need to calll next timeill. Be prepared...love this company

+1 to that . They have like you said Replaced mine about 4x's. Never once asked for anything but my address. Best company ever . Have since bought Otter Boxes for all my Devices.
I got this case mid August, and about a week ago, I dropped it. While in free fall, the top of the case just fell off my phone and broke in half. Sad thing is, I dropped it from about 2 feet. But yes, I called it in, and they are sending me in another, just have to watch out for my phone a bit more! (At least I get to replace the screen protector, put it on kinda bad, XP

So I just wanted to start a thread for myself and anyone else who may want to read it
Basically anyone who has an otterbox case for the evo shift or has seen/used it or whatever just leave your opinions/reviews whatever. I am thinking of buying one so just wondering
I don't have one for the Shift but I've used an Otterbox on other devices and would recommend it if you have the slightest fear of damaging your handset.
I believe the last one I used was a Commuter which completely encased the handset and seemed to be able to take a hit. The back was too smooth for me so I had a little trouble re-learning how to hold it and the thickness of the handset increased significantly but overall it felt safe. Worth the extra money.
I am using the otterbox commuter case on my shift right now. I like it a lot. The fit and finish seems like it is completely a part of the phone. Only two complaints are:
1. If I try to move an icon from one hone screen to another, the piece covering the screen makes it difficult to move it to the "edge" - not a big deal, you learn to adjust.
2. When opening the slider, I hear a click sound, sounding like the little tabs holding the upper piece on are catching as it moves. Again, kinda not picky.
All in all, I think it is a great case and makes me worry a lot less about dropping my device. I would definitely recommend it.

Awesome seems like ill want to pick it up. I recently cracked the screen on my shift and made a few scuff marks so that's what seriously turned me to getting the case.

Tip for putting on the included screen protector...patience and a clean work surface! I couldn't get it to work well at first, then I ended up dropping it on the carpet. I was ready to give up on it until my wife took it from me and got it to work. So...if you have the patience of an ADHD kid on meth like I do...lol. It was my first screen protector too so. Anyways have fun!

definitely worth getting. i have the commuter series otterbox and it makes my phone look and feel like a beast. only thing that annoys me sometimes is the dust/lint that gets stuck to the rubber on the case, but i just blow it off.

I haven't had a problem opening the slider at all.
I have one and love it! Top of the line case, looks good feels good and protects good! I would totally recommend it to anyone with a Shift!..
I use it on my shift, and have had them on two other phones. Like everyone else said, its a great case, and really does look like a part of the phone.

I'm now on my second otterbox after a free factory replacement, my only nit pics are the usb port cover doesn't stay closed, and it clicks everytime I open it, feels like one of the clips is catching....

Just got the Commuter series and I'm a fan so far. Makes the phone feel more substantial and gives a better grip. The only issue was with the headphone and USB port covers, which didn't stay down. I just removed them, but DON'T Rip them off, it'll tear the rubber casing. Found that out on the USB port one so I cut the headphone one off. Either way makes the rubber a little loose around the port but not hugely annoying unless you're a perfectionist(which I can be). I'll just apply a little glue and seat it on the plastic frame.

Nope I can confirm that, being really careful you can take the back without any problem..
I Think that the front parts being hard to take off it's a good thing.
Had mine for 2 or 3 months now
Bought it from Amazon for like $25 when they finally came available for the shift and had to wait a month before I got it in hand.
I'm not as impressed as i would be with the protection if it was a defender case. I had the black case with fake carbon fiber and belt clip before. The otterbox commuter is better then that one, by how much I'm not sure.
I dropped my phone about a month ago. I don't know if it just hit the right place of the case, and the back case came flying off the phone, the side clips where busted off, so the back case would not stay on any more.
I decided to call up otterbox and see if it was under warr. and if they would replace it. AMAZINGLY they said YES so they shipped me a new one for free i didn't even have to pay shipping. NICE. It was quick and easy I thought that was soooo cool. Because of that i will continue to buy otterbox, and recommend them to others.
In future i hope to buy defender cases (better protection) which means no more slider phones which i think i am ready for now that touch screens are so much better. All my old phones have been sliders with full keyboards from back in the day with my old HTC t-mobile MDA, which made me find this site.
Thats my 2 cents.
Lasted me just abt six months of light regular use. It's still on this phone as i write and its protective capability is still almost all intact, but the plastic and silicone are both breaking down: Replacement time.
The plastic of both the inner case and the protective belt clip is somewhat brittle. The retaining tab on the belt clip that holds the phone in, snapped off after less than a month rendering the belt clip useless, as it wouldn't hold the phone anymore. The little snaps that clip the inner case halves together are beginning to go; two of them broke in the last couple weeks.
These both look to me like design issues where the characteristics of the material used weren't accounted for as well as they might've been.
The silicone is tearing in a couple places, around the volume button and one of the plastic nubbins that the belt clip tab clicks into. This last tear is progressing out to the edge of the case, another 3mm or so to go.
i liked this case; phone felt really safe with it. i liked the really tall lip around the screen that made the phone super-easy to hold, even as it made typing a bit of a challenge with the "keys" at the edge of the screen. This is a big plus as this isn't the easiest of phones to keep a safe grip on while using it.
The built-in screen protector isn't so hot as it let dirt get in at the top between it and the screen, and also doesn't contact the screen at one bottom corner so one has to press down with disproportionate effort there to get the touch to register. It's where the keypad is so slows down typing.
Overall i'm glad it's on the phone. It's big and heavy and clunky and keeps the device well protected from harm and easy to hold on to. It's also one of the costliest cases and i was hoping it'd last me at least a year: i'm a fairly careful guy too, don't beat mercilessly on my gadgets or anything.
Think i'll try the Ballistics SG case next.

-- This tall lip is a part of the polycarbonate hard inner case and the screen protector is glued to it at the bottom. Makes for a very secure thumb hold and i expect will be one of the features of this case i'll miss.

Note that only some AT&T stores will. It's manager discretion and some will be more agreeable to it than others.
Otterbox breaking clips
I have had the same problem with with my Otterbox box case, the small clipe that hold the plastic case close keeps breaking after i have to open it up to clean my screen on my HTC vivid. Because the top is open, I'm cleaning my screen a lot.
just contact the supplier through their site and tell them what happen, and they will send you a new case for free. I'm on my second case now. it seems that they know there is a problem with those fragile snaps.

Mine lasted over a year, and that's with frequently pulling it apart to pull the battery. Now half of the plastic clips that hold it together are gone, and the rubber flap for the USB port is starting to tear, almost ripping off. If you pay attention when taking it apart, it should last way longer than a year. My only gripe is its a bit bulky, not very pocket friendly.

I'm on my 2nd Replacement case as I have broke 2 belt clips within 2 months. Otterbox has been excellent about sending a replacement in both instances. I also removed the built in screen protector and have purchased a different one from Amazon. Overall the case has been decent. Happy with it for the most part. I still am using the actual case from the original but now a couple of the tabs have broken off the polycarbonate shell. Guess I will have to switch out for one of the replacements they have sent me. Unfortunately the belt clip seems to have been the most fragile part for my experience.
Wow i haven't used my otterbox defender, cause one of the clips, of the inside broke, the screen protector is almost gone (its broking) and the outer layer of silicone doesn't like, glue? Stick to the hard case!! I'm going to contact otterbox and see what they said! Thanks guys!!

No receipt required. The photo with the case and your name and today's date is all the proof of ownership they need. After trying several cases for my Nexus 7, knowing there aren't any specifically for the Nexus 7 at any retail stores, this was the best one I've come across. It will hold me over until an official case comes out (I've kept the receipt so I can return it). I just can't have such an awesome piece of tech sitting around without a case and without the ability to use it as a stand for viewing. The leather is genuine and the case is simply gorgeous. I love the way if holds the tablet without the clamps/rubberized holding mechanism actually rubbing or touching the bezel. All ports are accessible while it is in the case and the power/volume buttons are very easily accessible.
Found it at Fry's this morning on the way to work but it will set you back $59.99. One of the best portfolio stand cases I've ever owned for any of my devices. High end.

None, which is hard to say about most cases. I've always had something I've disliked about a case but have dealt with it. I've also always went for the cheaper the better in the past. This case is truly a "you get what you pay for" case. The way it holds the very edges of the tablet is my favorite part. It looks like it is floating in the case and the parts that hold the tablet in place never really become part of the view. The access to all buttons and inputs as well as the quality of the leather are great. The actual stand aspect allows for infinite viewing angles and never feels cheap, like the stand portion is going to collapse at any moment.
This case looks really nice. I personally want a colored case though and not the standard brown/black. Also, I'd rather pay a bit more for a case that I really like and thats going to last me a while then buy a cheap case that I'm not that into, deciding that Im not satisfied with it and having to buy more. So if I see something that I fall in love with then I don't mind pulling the trigger as long as its not 100+

Nice. It fits perfectly? Usually cases with the plastic clips are pretty picky about what they'll work with. If so, I'm thinking about buying one of these gtab 2 7.0 cases and adding a "smart cover" magnet to it.

I just pulled the edges on the 4 rubber ends out slightly, if that makes sense, and when the tablet was in place, they wrapped perfectly around each corner of the tablet. It takes a tiny bit of "fitting", but once it's on, it's all good.

How about the speaker in the back, is it covered or are there holes for it?
There are no holes for the speaker. I did a test at max volume and I have no idea why but it sounds louder with it in the case then out of the case. It could be the way it's configured with the speaker near flush but with a decimeter or so gap. I know with my phones and tablets that they tend to sound louder when they are angled near a wall and I seem to get the same effect with this case.

i bought this elcheapo case for now, at least they have 2 day prime shipping
This case is very similar to the one you bought, but is significantly cheaper.

The company has a case specifically for the N7, but no pictures of the N7 in a case. I'm guessing their N7 is waiting to be delivered too. Haha. Anyway, I really like the floating look, and will probably be getting this one.

People on other threads have been linking to Cases listed on Amazon and Ebay with that very similar look (they probably all use the same stock photos) with prices ranging from $10 to $20. Even cheaper.

I don't know, may be not the same quality but it's hard to judge from photos, or even the prizes.
Only way to judge is hand-on experience like the OP's case, his case looks good also because when the back holds on to four corners only, whereas these ones are a bit 'uneven' (when viewed in portrait mode) : p
I would perfer something that holds on to the edges of Nexus 7 only, like the Official Case or this:

It claims to be case comparable by removing an insert
And at $32 bucks it's not a bad buy but it would be nice to find it cheeper. Anyway I was wondering if anyone had one and if it's any good?

it reminds me of those generic ipod docks, with the insert it fits snug but when you remove the insert depending on how thick your case is it wobbles
i'd recommend save your money and wait for the official dock that uses the pogo pins

I just ordered one. It should arrive in two days. In general I find Mobile Fun quite trustworthy. They seem to test all the stuff they resell so that they know its decent quality.
I'll let you know how the cradle works.
I have one on order from 4u-mobi that shipped Monday. I'll let you know when I get it. I already started a thread about this as well, called Kidigi dock for Nexus 7.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1849616&highlight=kidigi
Ok it arrived and my N7 is in it.
As Testaccount says above, it fits very well with the insert in place and no case. Without the insert it's a little loose, probably because with my case is just a gel back cover. Putting a couple of sheets of paper in behind the Nexus shows that the dock would be a good tight fit if the case was about 1 mm thicker so if you are thinking of a slightly bigger case, one of the wrap around maybe, the dock should work well.
Even without the paper it isn't so loose that it will fall out or anything. I just spent a hour prodding the screen to turn pages in Kindle and it showed no sign of falling. All in all I'm pretty happy with it. I don't see how they could have made it substantially better without mandating what case you can use with it.

Wow, that was quick. The one I ordered from China is going to take like 2 weeks to get to me in the US. I'm glad to hear you like it.
Great that is what I was hoping. What about how when it slides in is the fit on the usb connector good? I know even my stock usb cable is a tight fit that's why I ask. And thanks a lot for your input.

Just received this dock and have been using it for a couple of days.
Only $10 -- a cheap alternative so some of the 40-50$ options.

It's small, feels like a decent quality piece. It's glossy black with rubber feet on the bottom so it doesn't slide around. It keeps the Note 2 supported nicely when it's dropped in. It's got a floppy rubbery insert that you can take out if you have a case.
One con is that a few times when I've yanked my phone out, the rubber piece has either partially or completely come out. My advice would be to decide on a case of not and, if you leave the rubber insert in, put a drop of hot glue or something to keep the insert in place.
See pics below. Let me know if you have questions.
Does it work with the slimmer cases?

This is basically a glorified charger. No USB no HDMI no speak out. Does it even charge a spare battery? Whats the point?

What voltage and amperes does it deliver?
Beamed from Jupiter on my Galaxy Note II
I think it's cool man, it's just a simple charging dock. Great to keep at the office or your bedside.
So the only difference then my stock cable is my phone will be standing upward?...Lol...

Yes, it works with a slim case for me without even taking the rubber insert out. When you take the rubber insert out, there's a good 0.5-0.75cm around it, particularly the edges. A case with a big beefy back probably would not fit.

It doesn't come with a cable -- you use your phone's provided cable or anything else, so whatever those deliver. I just have a usb-to-microusb running from my computer to it and it works fine.

Sheesh guys. Think a little more outside your own world.
I have this dock connected to my computer at work. I walk in from a meeting, drop the phone in the charger (instead of setting it down, picking up the cable, jamming it in, etc) and it's immediately mounted as a drive on my computer and is charging anytime I'm at my desk. Need to run to a meeting? You just pick it up...no fussing with cables.
Nope, no spare battery. Surprise, most people don't need one. I spend half my day working at my desk, meaning my phone is charging half the day. In fact, I don't even feel like I ever "charge". It's just sitting in its stand. I never need to plug it in at home.
Nope, no USB or HDMI. Surprise, 99% of the people that use this phone care about that, so why pay for a $100 for a dock with it (that's the wrong color, BTW).
20 bucks? Wow, they saw you coming a mile off.
It's the same dock as this, which is in black or white.

Different dock and doesn't ship to the US. But yes, I see your point, there are cheaper alternatives on ebay. Thanks for trying to make me feel like an idiot, Baron. You are very thoughtful.
Here is the same dock for a better price for those of us in "the colonies"

Thanks man, that's the piece of info I needed. Ordered. I've got the Samsung TPU case, will report if it fits when the dock comes in. If it doesn't fit, I'll fix it up with some polymorph plastic.

Just picked one up, and thanks for sharing man :good:
While their prices aren't always the best, I do like Smartphonepedia's video reviews on youtube (the full shows, not the 30 second blips) and the guys there are very pro-android and know their devices. I would throw business at them vs a random guy on ebay any day.
May be ordering one of these. Thanks for the tip!

Just bought 2 of the $9.99 ones. I'll try to post my thoughts when received but it will be in a long time 14 to 30 days of expected delivery.
i'm thinking of getting this for my note http://www.mobilefun.de/36639-samsung-galaxy-note-2-dual-dockingstation.htm, this dock also charge an extra battery.
sorry for the german website, you can click flag above to change into uk/us site for mobilefun.
I got the dock in the OP this past Friday, and so far so good. Very nice looking, no cheap feel to it, and the Bodyglove case fits perfect on the dock. No complaints over here folks :good:
Nice find OP. Rough crowd lol.

You can just plug the phone into the dock without having to pick up the charge cable and plug it into the phone. Same for removing it from the dock. Since we have to charge the phone everyday, I would say the dock has a value.
