Dont you mean the hardkeys?!?!
"Softkey" implies software keys, And im sure you are referring to the hardware buttons? Hence "hardkey".
I too would like a way to keep them lit though, Sometimes I end up missing correct key in dark

Sorry. Yes I guess I did mean the "hard keys" - anyway its the search, return, home and menu keys.
As you are a senior member and have not yet found the answer then I guess there is not much chance of me getting it solved then eh?

tbh I've not actually got round to looking.
Anyone else then please to help with this problem?
Having the capacitative keys stay on would really help at night.
Having them stay off for reading would be even better. So irratating I put tape over them some nights.
Sent from my SCH-I800 using XDA App
Not an answer, but a data point showing this is possible...
The capacitive keys stay lit all the time (all being whenever the screen is on) on my VZW SGT. On my wifi only SGT, the capacitive keys shut off after a few seconds (have not timed it) and light back up if you touch the screen or one of the capacitive keys. I don't know if this is software and/or hardware related.
Pretty sure this is in the services.jar (ROM framework).

[sticky!!!!] The "answer Only With Hw Buttons" option or similar solution...
...a lot to read... and a lot of solutions!
thank you guys!
Just an Idea... maybe its possible to set the Touchscreen sensitivity to VERY low everytime there is incoming Phone call. And then you cant accidentially press one of the onscreen buttons. However, i think registry entries only change after a softreset. MAybe there is some workaround?
this solution will affect the entire normal use of the diamond. :-(
anyone knows a cook?
it can't be so difficult.
I'm willing to pay the money saved in missed calls in one week. It could be a lot, for sure...
Agreed! it would be a great feature to have

Well actually i meant it a different way. Imagine.. There is an incoming Call... This call is recognized, and the touch sensitivity is set to very low. After the call is done, or the call is taken, the sensitivity is restored..
yep... but i suggest this like a second try....
the easiest way is to create a new phone skin.
the best is a "only hw buttons" option
i can't believe to the drink beer app... useless but true... and nothing about this bug... it's incredible.
I would be satisfied to have ALL the hardware keys to be locked during incoming calls and the screen locked and need to unlock the screen with ie a slide before be able to answer... As the hardware buttons also is easy to press when it's in the pocket when your sitting etc.

I think we're half a million to damn this bug.
WE ALL NEED to lock the screen buttons.
WE ARE BORED of losing calls or answer accidentally taking out the diamond from our pockets.
WE NEED A SOLUTION.
WE DON'T WANT S2U2 AS A WORKAROUND.
HELP US.
AND YOU'LL BE REWARDED.

I don't get it. My on/off button is set to lock all other buttons when the device is off, apparently meaning the display. At calls the display is off after a few seconds and I have two choices to bring it back - push the on/off or remove the stylo causing notes to launch. Hence the only insident where I can see a problem is when the display is trickered to go on (alarm or incoming call) and it's way down the bag you may push something. Here I suspect the solution is to have it in a pouch. Anyway, I have seen many yields about this so i'll surely be victimised one day as well.
Its a really challenging app to make.
Think about it. How can u lock the keys yet mantain the ability to answer anytime with one button.
Tough call
maybe using the light sensor ... in the pouch screen off- out the pouch screen on

No, touching the screen will not bring the screen ON, the only thing that will bring the screen ON is pressing a hard key.
It's an excellent idea to make the light sensor feel if it's in the dark, and if so shut down the screen, the only problem is that nobody knows how to reliably do this for all ROMs (even official).
Take a look here guys... already lots of posts on this

1 a new phone skin without any buttons is the easiest solution i guess
2 changing the sensibility pressure works only on soft reset
3 light sensor... nice, but i don't think it's the best way to do this
isn't a predefined "lock screen" function on the diamond?
i'm a developer but i dunno nothing about pda application... i think it's weird if no one thought to a simple "block screen" function.

take this thread like an official request...
anyway, IF anyone konws how to work for developing a new phone skin... i'll do it. but i'm not into pda since this diamond and i dunno where to start...
well, i have this Xda Ignito and since recently its acting pretty strange...
the answer and reject keys scroll back and forth in the touchflo ...i havent installed any software that would make the ignito to act in such a manner and i even tried hard resetting the device...but still, this thing continues...
..its not that it happens every single time...it was bit rare earlier...but now..its quite frequent...
don't know if this is some feature or something that i'm missing...or is something wrong with my mobile?
pls. do let me know...its quite a pain...
hey, just noticed that the answer and rejects keys also scroll horizontally in programs and setting...
anybody knows whats going on?
Try pressing the outside of each button.
There is a 2mm spot towards the center on each side that is used for LEFT/RIGHT DPAD.
You're most likely just pressing the inside of each button, try the outsides.
Bet it will work =]

Hello, would it be possible for someone to write or modify _code to allow the four buttons to either stay on longer when activated or even always on when the screen is.
Thanks
Matt
People have been working on that since release to no avail :-(
Hmmm that's really disappointing. Thanks for your fast re
ply.
Np, the best advice I can give you and its what most people have done is just learn where the buttons are in the dark. After a week or so it won't be such a problem I promise
I'm not sure how useful this is, but Sprint told one of the tech blogs (I forget which) in correspendence that on the Epic 4G that the setting that controls the backlighting on the slide out QWERTY will also affect the soft buttons. So maybe once those start making it into our hands we'll find out how it's done and implement it on the other Galaxy S handsets.
i would want them lit for as long as the screen was on, having it on longer wouldnt be good enough.

QFT... It's stupid having them on a different timer than the "backlight".

Apparently the Samsung Epic's button lights stay on for the duration that the screen is on. Once the Epic firmware is released I'm sure the devs will find the files.
i usually just touch any where/move finger on the screen and the buttons just light up

That and you memorize where they are at after some time. I 100% understand, it's not a huge deal after awhile but it's still a short sight.

The Samsung guy demoing Media Hub even has trouble hitting one of the soft keys - though it does look like the keys stay lit longer on the Epic.
At about 1:35 he tries a couple times, and then has to tilt the phone to see the button.
http://www.androidcentral.com/sprint-demos-samsungs-galaxy-s-media-hub
Man, I wish this problem was solved. For me, it's the most annoying thing (really the only annoying thing) about this phone. Yeah, by now I've pretty much memorized where the buttons are, but 1 in 5 times I miss-hit one of the bottom buttons because they don't stay lit. If they were lit as long as the screen was lit, I would never miss-hit them.
I looked/searched but i cant find a way to keep the lights on longer then 5 secs. the bottom five buttons.
any ideas?
I've read that its controlled by hardware and cant be changed, which would suck. Cant say for sure though.
I have seen a lot of complaints on this but all the hacks and mods I've tried have the same issue. It seems like another thing to get used to (like no notification led and no flash)
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
i think the kernel has been modded to use as a notification led, but anyway if you touch the screen the lights come back on and how long does it take to learn the buttons any way?
we can hope that an experianced dev can work that into there busy schedules i wouldn't count on it

They can be changed...atleast they can on the i9000 which means all you need is patience...quite a bit of patience
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=772672
If the backlight notifications can be used based on calls to notifications, a call can be created to something related to screen/power/time etc to keep the lights running.
Ive managed to get used to it but the button press area is quite small too, meaning sometimes it takes a couple of tries to press it right, esp when you are holding the phone at funny angles.
Wish phones would come with real buttons again. I loved the layout and buttons on the Topaz.

Isn't there a kernel update or something that had this update? (unless your running Froyo) You can at least use them for notifications lol. This:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=762171
And yea, as much as i know where the buttons are, I still fail at exactly hitting them every now and then too lol.

hello, is it possible to disable the lights on the back and search buttons on ativ s? or increase the time it takes for it to go off?
yeah, I asked that too here
