Help guys.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S Captivate I897. Last night I installed the Clockworkmod ROM Manager in there and was messing around with it.
I choose my phone model to be the the I9000 and then I went into recovery mode to restore the previous ROM, but guess what? It went into recovery mode, the volume up and down buttons select the menu items and it asks me to hit the "OK key" to enter.
The Captivate doesn't have an OK key, it uses the power button. So the Android Recovery Mode here thinks the phone is a I9000 and I can't get it to do anything other than reboot into that mode.
I've tried using the ADB to try to get back into download mode but it's no longer reading the phone. The volume + power buttons to go into that mode has never worked for this phone either.
I'm at a loss at what to do. Is there anyway I can get out of recovery mode and into download mode or back to regular phone usage here? Would I need to take it to an android developer?
Thanks for your help.

Shut off the phone, open up odin(DG's flash to stock one) hold the power and the menu button. Once you see the ATT screen release the power while continuing to hold the volume buttons. Once odin recognizes your device flash to stock using the utility. Once this works donate to DG for saving your ass. Also, quit using ROM manager. Just use the update.zip method everyone else uses.
+1 for just using CWM update.zip It is sooo much easier/faster.
Thanks, but it didn't work. My Galaxy S is one of those where the volume + power buttons don't work to get it into download mode.
I did try power + menu as you suggest, but that doesn't work either.
try this
1. open odin.
2. With phone unplugged remove battery
3. with battery removed plug phone into pc via USB
4. with battery still removed simultaneously hold down Vol. + / - (forget about power button just hold down the two vol buttons)
5. While holding down the vol + / - insert the battery (keep the vol buttons down and hopefully DL screen comes up)

I cannot stress this enough.
Also, OP, if the above doesn't work, it might be USB jig time.
pwr isn't used to go into dload mode - that would turn your phone on.
Do this:
Open odin
Remove bat, sim, ext mem card
replace bat
hold vol -/+ and plug in data cable to computer
(should be download mode)
If that fails, then get yourself a jig... gotta search for the thread though - should cost a couple dollars. Then once you're back up... look up the thread to fix the 3 button combo.
You might try turning the phone off then hold VOLUME DOWN and POWER (not vol up/dwn/pwr) to get into download mode. Make sure to remove the sim and sd cards.
I bricked my phone over the weekend and had similar problem you did.the easiest way too get out in to download mode is a jig. Its easy and cheap to do.look on you tube under un brick captivate fort a tutorial.

Once you learn that trick you are on stock for like 2 minutes before you flash
Yeah I'm kind of a lurk but I've been around for about a month just flashing everything, and I had no idea it could be done like this till today. Going to make my next one even faster.

Nothing seems to work.
I'm going to try the jig method Wednesday morning. Wish me luck!
I tried the jig and it didn't work.
What happened was that it got me back into recovery mode, not download mode. Tried it several times. So unless I'm hitting the wrong points on the phone usb plugin (other than the last two), I'm hooped.
I tried the direct resistor wire to points in usb plugin method. I didn't try the one where I cut open a mini-usb cable and use the plug as a dongle, although I think it may get the same result.
What do you guys think?
ICS is good..but i feel that in GB ROMs i had a better control over my phone and so i want to down grade to GB....
I tried with Odin 1.7...sadly my phone is event recognised :'( in the Odin.
and i just tried flashing the ROM from recovery options ..the phone ended up cursing me....
looking for options and fyi key combos doesnt work in my cappy so i cant get in the dwd mode ......i tried from ROM manager also..its not going in dwd mode.....
any and all help and suggestions appreciated ....
You need ODIN or Heimdall. If it isn't recognize then you either have the wrong drivers or you set it up wrong.
i have tried on both ( i wanted to format the whole phone so that i can go back to the froyo) nothing worked.drivers installed , i can use the USB on / off also..but both dont recognise the phone.....and neither does adb......it just waits for the device o respond
Did you do a Nandroid backup with CWM before you flashed ICS? If you did then just do a restore. It worked for me. I had backed up CM7 before I flashed ICS. I had to go back to CM7 before I could flash a different ICS Rom.

Think you need to odin first. Since stock runs on different partition.

No...not nandroid ..i use Titanium ..so didnt do nandroid..
You will have to figure out how to get your phone in download mode before Odin or ham. Will work to recover your phone. If you have flashed a different boot loader to your phone the button combo may have changed.
Default combo is hold up+down+ power. Other ones I've come across is down+ power for download mode.
Otherwise I would suggest a USB jig to get download mode quickly.
Once you have that then using Odin PDA slot with a stock froyo image should work.

yes..true...but thats the prob..i am not able to get the phone in to dwd mode....i have tried all things i can.....
You've even tried a jig to go into download mode?
That method is pretty much guaranteed to work.
If you don't think there is anything more to do then I would suggest checking out mobiletechvideos

Isolate your fingers from the resistors, black tape or something. Make sure you are using the correct pins and be patient. All else fails you can have one shipped in for $15.

I can vouch for Captivate:
Hold Vol up and down. Press power and keep it on til white AT&T splash screen appears. Keep holding Vol Up and Down until CWM Recovery shows.
The same sequence for download but instead of Power On use USB cable insert into phone. Download appear much faster.
i can get in to the CWM options..but i cant get in to recovery..... even the AIO doesnt detect it..and so does the adb options....
You mean - you cannot get into download mode with Droid shoveling his own grave before fire squad?
yes.... even though i can give that options from other sources.i cannot get in to dwd mode..it alwasys boots in to recovery
your options are to either order a jig, send it out to josh, or
pull your battery
put it back in
do NOT turn on phone
hold volume up AND down at the same time
while holding both buttons insert the usb cable
continue to hold both volume buttons and wait for up to 10 seconds for download mode to activate
Guys,
I need some clarification. Im currently on GB but want to try ICS. I made a Nandroid backup of my phone. Now, if I wnat to downgrade from ICS to GB I can just restore the Nandroid? Or do I need first to go back to GB?
Can you guys give me the steps for this? OR will a simple Odin1click work to get me back to GB.
Thanks in advance and sorry if this was answered before, Im just a bit confused about the process.
Whats the best way to obtain root with out using ODIN??? Right now I cant get into ODIN because the power button is not functional. I tried to use the one click root but they didnt work. Kept getting stuck at step 7. I want root so I can use quick boot to reboot in to download mode. I tried to use the modifed 3e recovery but the batch kept giving me a fail. The thread said I didnt need to be rooted but when it looked for root it would just hang. So that didnt work either. Kind of stuck at this point of how to obtain root w/o odin. Its using offical ATT OTA 2.3.5 update. Never been rooted before. Thanks for the help.
To root gingerbread, you need to use the fugu kernel swap method. A simple search/looking through stickies will point you in the right direction. You will be using Odin, but you don't need to touch the power button. With the phone powered off, hold down both volume buttons and plug in a USB cable. You should be in download mode at that point

Yes I read that the power button is not required but when I hold the volumes down it doesn't go into download mode. It goes in yo Android recovery (3e). Not sure what I'm doing wrong but I've been getting the same responses.. One click root don't work. Also when I pull battery ( to turn off phone) and pit it back in and hold the volumes up and down that's when I get in to the 3e recovery. Odin doesn't detect so I can't flash using Odin in this recovery. Thanks for the help but this phone was hard to root or get in download mode with the power button not working..he got an upgrade maybe I'll tell him to just get the galaxy note

Ppl keep saying that but hasn't worked for me. That combo just gets me into Android recovery 3e..i have read somewhrre that you should still beale to flash but Odin doesn't recognize so that's not an option...thanks for help anyway
Btw: the phone doesn't stay powered off. As soon as I put the battery in it turns on. With the cord in the phone and pressing the volume combo during that boot up it takes me recovery 3e

Not sure if you've tried this, but take out the battery, hold volume buttons, insert usb, then insert battery.
It would seem that the problem is in the broken power button...it's pressed all the time, so when using the correct button combo for download mode, it doesn't work because of the power button always being pressed.
Op, rooting your phone won't fix your power Button.
You could install Android sdk, and use adb to boot into download fwiw....
You should check out mobiletechvideos.com they offer a power button replacement service.
I currently have The Collective's AoCP build 3 Jelly Bean ROM on my Captivate. I need to go back to the Cyanogen 10 builds because it looks like they've fixed the lag issue. I came upon a really bad accident on my way to work and needed to call 911 ASAP. I unlocked my phone and hit the phone button and it must have taken 20 seconds for the dial pad to come up. I've gotta try something else...
My question is this. I can't get into recovery by turning the phone off and using the 2 or 3 button salute. I've tried volume up - power, volume down - power, and volume up&down - power. No dice. I've learned there is a 3buttonfix that I can download and install, but I read about it first and it says if you're running this bootloader or that bootloader don't use this fix because you WILL hard brick your device. I have no idea what bootloader I'm running and if I can't use this fix, what do I do to fix the issue? For future reference, how do I tell what boot loader I'm running?
The reason I want to MAKE SURE the 3 button salute works is I want to flash from AoCP to CM10 and if something goes wrong, I need to be able to do that. I can hold the power button down now, and choose reboot, then boot into recovery, and that works, but if I soft brick my device, that function won't do me any good.
Any guidance you pros out there have for me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
Don't use the 3 button fix. You are correct in that it will hard brick your phone. If adb works, you can use that to reboot into recovery. I think you can do that with a terminal emulator too ("su" first to get root access, then "reboot recovery").
There's not a way to tell which bootloader your on. If you want to know 100% without a doubt your on the latest, flash the kk4 stock ROM. Downside to that is you would have to start over on cm10 or any other aokp. Making a nandroid first will make it less painful.
Also, that dialer lag will happen with any ICS-JB ROM on this phone. It's pretty much unavoidable at this point. Have you ever done the recovery combination before? If not, then you may be doing it wrong. Hold down the volume buttons, and press the power button only until the screen turns on. Hold the volume keys down until you hit recovery.
Oh, duh, you're on AOcP. You should have a recovery option in your power menu under reboot.
Oh said:
I do have a recovery option int he power menu. But what if I soft brick my device? I have a rigged jig somewhere, but that wasn't reliable for me. Not because it doesn't work, but because I made it very, um, frugally.
So there is no way to know what boot loaders I'm on? Darn... I didn't do the original flashing. MobileTechVideos.com did the flashing after I hard bricked it where my jig no longer even worked.
Thanks all for your input, and anything else you may suggest.

THANK you very much for that info. Do you know of anyway for me to be able to boot into recovery mode using a key combination? I tried what was mentioned above (holding volume up-down after pressing the power until it boots into recovery, but it just goes right to the AoCP boot animation).
Maybe your holding the buttons too long when you try the button combo.

You may have already tried this in your many attempts but I'll still throw in my two cents.
Starting with power off hold all three buttons at the same time. First you should see the att splash screen and then your kernel splash screen. Then the phone should turn off. Keep holding the buttons til you see the att screen again and then release them all. That should get you into recovery. At least that is exactly how I get there besides of course the power menu.

Yes, I do appear to be missing download mode as well... What have I done? The phone runs just fine with AOCP The Collective, except it's just getting too laggy for me and I want to check out CM10's newest releases. BUT, I don't want to be flashing ROM's until I can boot into Recovery. I can REBOOT my phone from my Power menu once the phone boots up, but I can not get any button combination to work to boot me into recovery.
Regarding download mode... I can not enter download mode either. I power down, take battery out, remove SIM, place battery in phone hold volume up/down and insert usb cable. Just displays the battery charging meter...

I do get the white AT&T screen... It comes on, then flash to a black screen and then back to the same white at&t screen, then to The Collective boot animation. This wouldn't be a problem for me, but I do want to play with some other ROM's, but I don't want to without this working...

Thanks for the suggestion... I downloaded a 1 click to KK4 and used my jig, which worked. Got really lucky, as something happened at the SET PIT table during the ODIN process and I had to start over. Luckily it didn't brick, but on the next boot I got the icon of a phone and a computer with a triangle in between those icons. I ran ODIN again after booting into download mode, and it took. I'm not running KK4 and I can do the 3 finger salute, so now I'm going to start over with rooting and moving to Jelly Bean. What a way to get the recovery back...
Thanks again for everyone's assistance.

And now I am stuck onto Samsung Logo. The problem is that i would flash new Jelly Bean but I've got broken Vol Up button.
Is there any option to flash Jelly bean without using Vol+ button? Probably a little bit of tea got to the button and it stopped working.
I wanted to send my Advance on warranty and I wanted to make it free of any traces of using not original rom( I had CM, PAC and some others).

If you're not using volup then use voldown (LOL) and flash a firmware with odin.
Ye... When i press Vol- Home Power, then big warning screen shows before my eyes and to continue to download mode i have to press vol+ button. But I somehow made it(one on thousand clicks vol+ works) and i flashed fresh jb firmware and it's still bricked on samsung's logo!
