Pro cons se arc vs lg optimus 2x - LG Optimus 2x

Currently I have a se arc and I love the design. However, I read a couple of interesting things about this phone. As I didn't had any usefull to ask for my coming birthday I will get an optimus 2x
As you guys are the serious users, what pro/cons do you have for me as information. Please let me know.
I heard some bad things about bad incoming volume and good things about real fast web browsing. Is this all true?
Sent from my arc using tapatalk

I'm using latest baseband version and no problems with sound quality at all.
Pro:
- very responsive device
- unlocked bootloader
- good camera
- nice hardware quality
Cons:
- stock launcher is not the most fluid one
- some users are experiencing software issues
- no dedicated led for notifications (you can use buttons backlight instead)

only con for the P990: CM7 not available (yet)

Pretty much all cons are software issues, CM will have that sorted... just wish they'd hurry up
Only hardware con appears to be backlight bleed of varying degrees.

Thanks 2 all, I am sure cm7 is just a matter of time with the devs over here.
Backlight bleed? Never heard of it, will google... Thanks.

Oh very much so, it's pretty much done. Check out @cm_arcee for pics.

Only some devices have this bug, the best way to check backlight issue:
Go to the shop, ask salesman for O2X, connect charger to O2X, during the bootanimation/charging animation check upper corners, and see, if this specific unit has problems. If not, pick it

Well, impatient as always I bought one today, its on the charger now. When started first time it mentioned it has a software update. As I was on the road I ignored it because I had no wifi available.
Back home I just set up wifi but now it say I already have the latest software. Very strange.
I searched already, but is there a easy one click app to root this phone?
What is the best rom I should use? I saw a lot but which one is the most stable and have the best look?
Sent from my arc using tapatalk

Try a few and see what you like. Everyone has different opinions

MCR is the best option at the moment.

The phone straight of the box is not all that 'flash'...in order to reach it's full potential you will need to flash newer firmware and/or customs roms...for increased sound quality you will need Voodoo Sound, and I would recommend PowerAmp also. Once all that is complete you'll have one hell of a phone (seriously)

Some questions on rom manager
After i install rom manager and put custom clockwork mod recovery ,would i still need pc to flash roms with odin or i can do it without pc?
Also it would be nice if someone tell the procedure on how to install roms using rom manager?

1. There is a fair bit of support for sound quality on this device. I am no audiophile, but I think its pretty good. There is a Voodoo Control app that lets you get a little more in depth with all of this, a quick search for it might help you figure out if its what you're looking for.
2. I love my SGS. Tons of fun ROM's available, ported apps, despite what some say I experience great battery life, with the upgrade to 2.3.3 I have great GPS. The screen is extraordinary, and it has one of the best community followings on XDA
3. There are some bugs with the GPS system. Some people experience poor satellite locks. There are a few different things that can cause it, most with viable workarounds or fixes. Other than that....the only bugs I've found have been software, and usually fixed by Dev's.

Varies depending on what rom/firmware you choose as stated above about GPS, however I don't use it so doesn't worry me...
Sent from my GT-I9000 using Tapatalk
out of the box my phone had 2.2 froyo which has been ok for me. The best thing about the phone and android platform is how much you can change.
The thing that made me choose this over HTC is the screen is it's a more manageable size and the screen is covered in gorilla glass - MUCH harder to crack/break. So many of my friends have cracked iphones and HTC's.
Flashing to late gingerbread/good custom rom's makes the phone incredibly quick compared to stock and much more fluid and usable.
No regrets on this phone, except that the SII is out soon ;D

Rom manager ? There's no real need for that in my opinion, to start off you just use Odin (on your PC, very simple) to flash an updated stock firmware, 2.3.3 probably best. Once that's done you download any rom you want from the Galaxy S Android Development Thread. However to do all this, including using Odin, you (the phone) MUST have both download mode (with phone off, hold home button + volume down + power) and recovery mode (same but volume up instead of down). Pretty sure 95% of them do have these modes.
I would definitely recommend buying an i9000 right now.
The hardware is solid and reasonably future-proof, including some features that newer phones lack such as the AMOLED screen and Gorilla Glass. The 1Ghz processor may not be dual core as some of the newer phones will be sporting, but in real day to day usage the performance difference between dual core and single core CPUs is not really noticable, assuming you aren't doing heavy gaming on your phone.
The i9000 modding community is very strong so even once Samsung stops providing software updates to the phone, you will still be able to get the latest and greatest thanks to XDA devs. Often the ROMs you can get here will be superior to the stock ROMs for such phones as the Galaxy S II (and probably even III). You can also opt to install Cm7 on the i9000 now to ensure your phone will be getting regular updates for at least a few years to come.
Lastly, now that the Galaxy S II and other next gen phones are being released, you should be able to get a great deal on an i9000.
There are two major bugs for the international SGS line.
The first one, lag, can be fixed pretty easily, if you don't mind rooting your phone and generally doing things that void your warranty. The main problem is to do with the file system used on the phone. It may seem fine at first but it bogs down after a while and a week or two later can be pretty unusuable. Although this varies from person to person, and a lot of the newer firmwares are a lot better than the old ones. Still this is pretty easy to fix permanently if you have a problem, just flash a kernal supporting voodoo lagfix or universal lagfix and then convert the filesystem.
The second major problem is the GPS. User experience varies very greatly for this, some report their gps working perfectly all the time whist others claim it to be literally useless. The problem seems to be a combination of hardware and software and there are a lot of fixes which have widely varrying success rates and may work perfectly for one person but be useless for another. In my experience the gps is probably not reliable enough for navigation but will do alright. Sometimes it locks to an accuracy of 5m - other times 5km. If you consider GPS an important function, then I would probably have to recommend you look elsewhere.
Gingerbread, the latest version of android is available for our phones, but it has a few bugs in it. So some people prefer running the later version of froyo which are very reliable and there is lots of support and extras for. However as gingerbread is more commonly adopted it is starting to take over and get many of the extra features that are available for froyo.
Alternatively, the phone now has official cyanogenmod support after a long time of it being unofficial and too hard to make work as an official version. This will enable you to run the latest and greatest android versions for some time to come but at the moment it drains battery much faster than samsung based roms.
As for gorilla glass, it's certainly a great thing to have, and much better than normal glass, but by no means does it make your phone invincible to scratches and cracks. Some people may still prefer to use a screen protector, some people do not, it's really up to you to decide that. However I've seen far too many expect gorilla glass to mean invincible and they get a big scratch on their 3rd day or something and then complain too much. Having tried it with and without a screen cover, the plain glass does feel a little bit nicer, but if you get a good quality cover it's almost unnoticeable. Just take care of your phone either way.
Now as for sound, out of the box it is pretty average. However it has a high quality audio chip and its average sound output is due to rushed sound drivers. Supercurio has essentially reworked the sound drivers and has made a huge difference to the sound making it very high quality. There is a free version and a paid version. The Free version gets pretty much all the same stuff but you have to use a custom kernal with voodoo sound built into it. The paid version only requires your phone to be rooted and it can inject the voodoo sound drivers into any kernel. The best bit about this is you always get the latest version of voodoo sound without having to flash anything new. Even if the kernel you use has an old version of voodoo sound, using the paid up you will always get the newest. The paid version also gets the latest new features before they are brought to the free one.
EDIT: One last thing, try and have a look at the display model. The Galaxy S uses a pentile matrix sub-pixel layout which some people find looks funny and they cannot stand it. If the screen looks fine to you then don't worry about it. It looks fine to me.
I was rushing anxiously to buy the sgs 2 but fortunately I stopped to check out s1 and gave myself a chance to try it, after using that amazing phone, no need for the dual processor of the s2 with the present apps on the market now, maybe later on.
What I love in this phone:
1. Amazing screen
2. Compact size
3. Sound quality (boosted by voodo)
4. Fair processor speed.
I switched from htc hd2

Since I bought this phone 8 months ago and still using it I reccomend you to buy.
Here are my asnwers to your questions. Please note that these are depending on my experience and opinions. It is impossible for me to be very objective.
1. Sound quality is perfect. I was using Iphone 3g before. Compared to iphone it is perfect. But it may such compared to some other devices that I did not used or have knowledge about it.
2. The screen is awesome. Color, sensitivity are perfect. Little bit less resolution than I phone but the look is better than iphone (iphone 4 of course). The battery life is about same compared with these kind of devices. Speed is reasonable. The thing that I do not like is the back button can be touched accidentaly easily resulting exiting programs. Not a big deal.
3. Bugs are dependable. If you flash a lot of roms like me, or install applications out from the market it is possible to have some bugs.

Would you reccomend the optimus 2x?

I am currently using a Motorola defy but am looking at upgrade options. The 2x is by far the cheapest dual core regarding the plan i have in mind of taking with my provider. So, Im interested if someone could tell me what were your experiences after some time of use....i am mostly concerned by the reliability and the number of different problems that people seem to be having with this model hardwarewise...is the build quality really somewhat below standard od are those just som erotten apples?
Also, regarding rooting, flashing and all similar procedures, how would you rate the respective ease of those activities on the 2x comparing to other handsets?
Not recommended.. buy Samsung Galaxy S II..

Yeah, if you want good dual core phone go for Samsung galaxy sII, HTC sensation or simply wait for nexus prime.

wow, that bad or are you just being ironic
Guess it is going to be saving time then because the other options are at least 50% more expensive from my standpoint.
Optimus just needs more ram

There are better phones out there, I agree, but the 2x holds its own. I'd say go for it if you are on a tight budget.

No.
As others have pointed out:
Sensation (and XL) and Galaxy S2:
- Have much better versions of Android installed by default.
- Have better screens and hardware in general.
- Have companies who have improved their updating policy greatly.
Not to mention Nexus Prime, if the one who is asking is willing to wait.
Even after installing custom ROMs on this thing, I sometimes miss my HTC Desire with Oxygen ROM.
no due to the fact it's a LG phone. Spec wise the phone is great, stock software is ****. Other phones and companies seem to get updates out faster i would recommend anyone other one of them.
Like i keep saying.
Optimus 2x = Great hardware and built quality (GS2 built quality sucks IMO)
= Bad stock Rom.
So!
If your planning on installing a custom rom, like cyanogenmod, its probably the best device for the price by a mile. Am more than satisfied with CM. It's super fast stable and responsive.
If your planning to stay on stock, dont bother.
Period
I am on stock euro open v10d,and it is flawless!

It's a good phone.
Stock software was really bad at first, latest Froyo (and baseband) works good but flashing newer custom ROM's based on GB leaks made it awesome
Our developers always have something better to work with, even without full support by LG or nVidia. I mean, just look what Samsung and Sony Ericsson did by recognizing community efforts and I believe LG will do the same, in time. After all, Optimus 2X was their first attempt to play hi-end game and was released only 9 months ago. So stop whining. HTC was on the same level just last year... Been there, done that - I had HTC Hero. Now they are praised, but last year only hated.
Never tried CM, there were too many setbacks at first, some are solved by now but really never had any need... Just waiting for Topogigi's 2.0 and new HP kernel. Don't expect too much from LG, follow xda devs and Paul from MoDaCo of course. Flashing is easy and device is un-brickeable
Yeah, I was thinking if I buy it to definitely flash some custom rom so this is good info, thx .
I can only recommendation the phone, i know five people with the ox2 and no one has hade any problems. I have tried cm and the leaked ginger but i am back on stock rom now.

Insight on the Thrill

hey guys, I was hoping to get some help from some thrill users. I'm hoping I can get a little honesty here, I am doing research for a buddy on the thrill. I have checked out specs, and spec wise seems like a nice device. I just wanted some insight on state of this device, whether its a good purchase or not, i have found some nice deals on this device bare in mind im buying full price so i want to have a device that will have a little bit of longevity. here are some things i hope you guys can share some insight on:
reliability of device, hardware/software
development does it look good will there be ICS i didnt notice ics roms
any alarming things to know about the device before buying
known issues
i ask all this because the G2x for tmobile seems to be a nightmare, hoping this is a better device thanks for any help you guys can provide
I'm pretty happy with my Thrill, but I was disappointed in how long it took to get GB out for it. I'm not sure if we will ever see ICS. The camera is excellent, battery life is ok (I bought a 3500mAh battery and have to charge up nightly). The 3D is kind of a gimmick, but it does work well.
I found that it's much snappier with a custom ROM. I'm currently using Lestatious AcidHazard from the dev forum here. Both ADW and GoLauncher are much better than the default "LG Home" launcher.
Overall, not bad for my first Android phone. I upgraded from an iPhone 3GS and will never look back at Apple, but for my next one I may consider Samsung or HTC just because there seems to be a much larger developer community for their offerings.
Ill give you only my opinion based on my experience with this device. Can't speak for anyone else but I'm sure there might be some very diverse opinions about this device.
I feel the Thrill is the underdog in the current Gen of high powered devices. Kinda like if you perchased a low cost car because the price and function fit your needs. Then you discover it had a turbine engine that simply needed to be switched on and calibrated properly. Would be cool and fun although very unlikely. However the Thrill is often referred to as a sleeper. The hardwear is all there but the stock Rom is restrictive. With some patience and proper modification the Thrill is an awesome phone that can outperform many high priced phones and then some.
In most cases from what I have seen many people find a baseband they like, and a rom that works with the baseband, a few tweeks and bam nirvana. Currently the most common issues that I'm aware of are Ghost calls, Bluetooth instability and minor app bugs. We don't have a huge Dev team but the devs we got are darn good and have flat out showed us all what the Thrill is supposed to be.
If you have loaded any roms or rooted a phone then you will be capable of tweaking the Thrill as you like in about 1 day at the most. Do some further research on it first before you dive in so you are fully aware of what your getting in to.
Hope that helps
Its fast as ****. Its nice to the eyes, it sounds good while making calls for me at least.
What else do you need?
Sent from my LG-P920 using XDA
coming from the HTC sensation the 3d agreed is fun to play with but a gimic super fast and honestly if the right tweeks were given then the phone would be right behind the sgs2 easily if not keep up the LG 3d Max launcher is what I'm using but it is slower easy fix by getting a launcher from the market I recommend Adw or go launcher the dev work is amazing but slow and the optimus 3d is the exact same phone and is on the official list to receive ics according to popular results on Google but looking at things it'll be years end before we see official ics custom ROM will show up first and more than likely soon since the drop for LG phones supposedly is second and 3rd quarter once agin popular Google results reviled this for me over all I do not regret the switch and believe this phone Will peak at ics but will stay alive for probably another year to a year 1/2 stability is decent but be sure to update to gingerbread as the phone really seems to shine afterwards

I actually love this phone. It is really fast and the battery life is decent. The camera takes awesome pics and videos. About a month ago I was almost fed up with the phone and the dev on it but after flashing the Mokee ROM I fell in love with the Thrill all over again. If I had to choose a phone right I would pry choose the Note over this but then again most people would.

worth buying WEEELLLL for me it was .... i got one for a lil less than 100euros, for a 2011 high class smartphone its golden (all accessory original box delivery inclued)
funniest i had a GT-I9000 he died, but the cheapest i could find beside that P990 was merely 50/100 euros more ... weird for a 2yrs old middle class smartphone (still the SGS is a wonderfull phone (normal one not S+ or other)
worth it? definitely!
the only thing that bugged me was Nvidia policy wich make the GT-I9000 more lively when it come to custom roms but XDA proved i can get ICS delicacy on mu P990 too
I managed to pick one up for £120 on eBay the other month. Quite chuffed with it so far. It's faster than my previous devices and the screen is much nicer.
I'm currently running Gingerbread MIUI but fancy trying something different.

is it worth it? it all depends on what you wanna do with it, how much patience you have with LG's (lack of) support, and whether you enjoy flashing nightlies/kangs that are still under development.
I bought mine second hand at a similar price as yours, and for me, yes, it was definitely worth it. It's my first smartphone and for the combination of reasons stated above, I have quickly became a flashholic and frequent visitor to the xda. As a results, I've learned a lot about Android phones and became a passionate loyal fan of them, as well as a grateful supporter if the awesome developers in these forums.
So, again, it depends on why you're shopping for one but it was worth it for me.

100eur it is very good deal for the performace which you will get.. Overclock up to 1.5ghz, smooth tegra2 cpu, on stock rom I had weak battery, now i use tamasek's rom and on 1.3ghz it is so much better, but still best results on CM9, but it is useless without a cam and hardware support, so if you want to wait for official ICS release, you should get it. But keep in mind, try to never drop it, it is definitely not shock proof

I said JB in general, mind you once/if the drivers are released for ICS, JB isn't that big a step up. Even if the right drivers aren't released, JB roms should come out for O2X once the source code is out in 2 weeks, whether some things work or not!
For that sort of price you could do a lot worse, I've had a rough relationship with my o2x with it being full of bugs but it's worth it for those times that it does what it's supposed to. The only word of warning is it needs flashing, the stuff LG put on there isn't great so i've warned a few friends off knowing i'd be there technical support when they inevitably brick it, but as your on here I'm sure you'll be fine with this side of stuff.

i fall in love with this phone is a beast with full of feature, the 4.0 inch IPS lcd display is better than samsung super amoled the colour is super natural and solid
If LG launched ICS, the devs here on XDA would certainly make a modified version of that ROM, and then we would unleash the phone's real power...
...but since the people at LG are a bunch of retards, I don't think it's worth waiting for an official update...

I agree the display is beautiful... I've got friends using iPhone and they were still surprised how bright the display on this phone was....
Before using it, I had a HTC desire, and if people complained about the LG draining the battery too quickly, compared to my desire, the battery still lasts longer.
And so far, people complain about o2x rebooting for no reason, even if it did happen to me, so far it hasn't been a disturbance...
All in all, I think it is a great phone

Good Bye Optimus 2x

I feel a huge difference in terms of performance, and the O2X had a habbit of running out of RAM constantly, making it very laggy (this could be helped somewhat using CM7).
And don't even get me started on the whole BSOD while charging issue, that is just annoying - not being able to trust your phone at all (even if the issue seems to be rare with V20s).
The Galaxy Nexus is also capable of playing pretty much any video I can throw at it - even 1080p high profile. The O2X lagged horribly with pretty much any video I tried, mainly because most of my videos are encoded in high profile h264.
But the thing that matters the most is not the hardware, its the software - it is just great to know that you will receive the newest version of the OS in a timely manner, not delays after delays. And the releases are not filled with tons of crap (like F-Secure on the stock ROM or w/e the name of it is).
But to be fair, the O2X is a great phone (on CM7, hoping for ICS soon so it can have CM9), and I would have kept it for myself it if not for the cheap Galaxy Nexus

Come again?
If you put a dual core on a pile of crap you get o2x. Worst phone ever, i hope to get rid of it soon.
Well today I bought G Nex too. Updated it to JB and it works damn smooth. Now I just have to sell my O2X
Gnex was my first Android phone got it back in January then I got the o2x for my wife then a gtab 10.1 and recently a gnote.. Tbh gnex its an hyper boring phone.. That thing its unbrickable and every rom out there its the same boring thing.. Noone likes to "change the stock feel" same features in all roms and stable as hell..
Everything works as it should.. And the forum its boring as hell.. Same applies for gnote.. But I kept gnote stock with touchwiz since I have cm9 on my gtab and stock jelly bean on the gnex... So actually I like the stress here and gtab forums about waiting for the releases xD

Did you even read what i wrote? I wrote: "But the thing that matters the most is not the hardware". With that sentence I mean that I would rather have a single core phone with proper software, than a dual core phone with terrible software. So basically we agree.

I do not agree, the ROMs for the Galaxy Nexus might look pretty much the same on first glance, but the features are way different, for example Paranoid Android allows you to choose tablet mode and DPI per app.
Pretty much all ROMs built for the O2X are based on CyanogenMod.
02x is a good phone.. I just wish it wouldn't randomly lock up. I can't really ever trust it , in stressful situations like trying to open GPS while lost in Sydney traffic is sometimes is slow or freezes.
can't unlock from boot straight away because it might freeze etc.
I would like a more reliable phone.

Yeah, I plan to sell my P990 and get a Galaxy Nexus too... If ICS comes to the P990 by then I may change my mind, but if not, I'm not sure how I'll sell it.
"LG P990 'Optimus 2X' dual-core smartphone.
"Runs Cyanogenmod 7 (Android 2.3), no promises of any more updates though.
"Performance is up there with the SGSII, but overheating and random reboots are normal."
...yeah, I wouldn't buy it.
/rant
My partner has an Xperia Pro. Apparently ICS is available (officially) for it? I've not seen it yet, and she's not willing to unlock it and get CM9 onto it. :/
Anyhoo, this forum is not the place to ask that.
...of course, that's at no fault of the community. Mostly it's LG's fault. Not necessarily for not releasing updates/drivers/etc, but for using awful, closed hardware.
Ah well. I'll hang around in the meantime. I'm not much of a dev, so I'm with the lurking crowd, complaining in these threads about LG and NVIDIA with the rest of y'all.
For those devs hanging around here, <3 you guise. Thanks for making this phone usable, maybe even enjoyable. ICS devs in particular, your patience (if any remains) is amazing, putting up with LG's silence and peeps like us demanding a 100% stable ROM. I imagine most of us understand the situation though. ^_^

Paranoid its also based on cm9.. All the features ARE the same with some slightly differences in ui.. All they have theme engine all the have toggles all they have integrated weather, all they have extended power menu, all they have t9 dialer, all they have twickable cpu/gpu settings, all they have color correction settings, all they have power savings options.. In the end they are all the same as for the tablet mode I have a tablet and it's not attractive to me in fact I like phone mode more and Wish I could get a paranoid android for tablet that turns the tablet into phone mode lol.. Well at least jelly bean brings that to the table I love the fact that the notification bar its in the top side of the screen just like the phone does.. So Google managed to consolidate even more the OS for tablet and phones making it looks and feels almost the same on both..

So the problem is that there are no problems with the Galaxy Nexus, which makes it boring?
I aslo sold my O2X yesterday and bought a SGS3, what a difference. Like going from a Fred Flinstone "car" to a Lamborghini Spyder.
