Best rom to boot from SD keeping emmc stock? - Nook Color General

I have a nook myself and I run phiremod from emmc, but I have a friend who wants to keep his nook completely stock, but still use android roms via the sd card.
What would I have to do to make it so he could insert the SD card boot the nook and it boots to a froyo or eclair rom, and when he takes the card out and boots the nook it goes back to stock.
The guide to running phiremod from the sd card is beyond me and anything stable and simple will do.
Also, he's running the latest BN firmware on the nook.

This is the best:
[ROM][CM7] Size-agnostic SD Card image and CM7 installer for SD Cards. with updater
This gives you CM7(2.3 Gingerbread) and it self adjusts depending on the Size of the card you use.
It also makes installing GoogleApps and Updating the ROM easy without the need to have a Linux PC or ClockWorkMod. You just put the ROM zip on the "boot" partition(the one that shows up in Windows) and Hold N+Power for 6 seconds when your Nook is off to boot to Recovery and it'll Automatically Update from the zip. It works the same way when installing Gapps.
All in all, the best expirience I've had with SD ROMs.
PS: I'm doing the same thing as your friend. I have Unrooted Stock on EMMC and run CM7 off my 4gb Class 6 SD.

[Q] Is Dual Boot Possible?

I still quite new to the NC and Android world, so please forgive me if this is a really stupid question.
Is it possible to have a "Dual Boot" NC? Example: With no SD card installed, it boots and runs the 'stock' B&N 1.1.0 out of the box version. Then have a bootable SD card that runs the NC such as it would if you rooted it?
I guess what I'm actually asking is can you have a different operating system on an SD card, and have the NC boot up that system when the card is installed?
Jim
.managed to get auto nooter running on stock NC and boots when i have no sd card installed i also have Honeycomb installed on my SD Card that boots to that when i put the Sd card in ..
Can you tell me what you had to do in order to get this to work?
http://nookdevs.com/Portal:NookColor
is where i got all my information ..
specifically :Enable Root with Nooter Instructions. with the auto nooter to whatever version your nook is
then i installed Honeycomb on a SD card and then installed GaPPS

Is Phiremod a bootable SD?

I am thinking of going with the new phiremod, but I'm curious if it boots from SD card or internal. I have nookie froyo on sd right now but like running stock rooted for the stock reader. I'd like to be able to switch between both as I do with nookie.
"Installation for V5:
- Flash with the latest ClockworkMod Recovery for nook from Rom Manager
- Unzip and copy all contents of "phiremod-V5.tar.gz" to the root of your SD
- Place SD in nook and power on
- Format SYSTEM and then DATA
- Flash phiremod
- Once complete, remove SD card and reboot"

Is this possible?
Q: IS THERE AN SD-ONLY "BOOTABLE" VERSION?
A: Not from the nighty builds. However-- should someone want to create such a bootable SD-- (warning: Slightly technical answer all it would take to create one is a new uRamdisk file with the partitions in init.encore.rc pointing to the correct partitions on the SD card.

There is an SD boot version of CM7 from about a week ago in the NC Development Forum.
If you read the thread, there are instructions for installing the Market and Gapps, and for extending the /sdcard partition to include the full size of your card.
You can then install all the same things as phiremod did, if you like, or just do your own customizations.
It has ADW installed, and the ADW and CM7 settings that are included cover a lot of the ground that previously required a whole bunch of utility apps...
PS It also include Bluetooth.

Using ONE SD card to flash SD ROM? Possible?

SO basically I want to
1.) burn a CWR SD card.
2.) Put it in the nook and boot into CWR
3.) Take the card out, format it back to fat32
4.) Put the Phiremod 6.3 SD flashable rom.zip on it.
5.) Pop it back into the nook and mount the storage.
6.) Flash Phiremod onto the SD card.
7- Turn nook on and Profit??
Well, I just booted my NC to CWR from SD, then removed the SD and was able to read a second card without any error from CWR.
So I suppose that would work in theory, the only difference would be you are doing it on one single card and not two. Though I don't know how safe it would be.
Yea I took the plunge and tried it.
Although I flashed

found in this thread Flashing Roms to SD CARD -

and I didn't boot into Phiremod, instead it was nook stock.
Would I first need to flash V6.zip, then flash the 6.2 update.zip?
EDIT* Did not work. Still boots into stock
How about you try this:
[ROM][CM7] Size-agnostic SD Card image and CM7 installer for SD Cards. with updater
I don't know if it works with a Phiremod ROM but it doesn't hurt to try. I used this to install plain CM7 on my Card.

How to remove JUST ClockWork from internal memory?

I have installed CM7 on the SD card and NOT the Nook's internal memory, so if the SD card is taken out I still have my stock Nook ROM.
However, I have installed ClockWorkRecovery through the CM7 ROM (installed in SD Card) and now I would like to remove just CWR, since I cannot receive Nook official ROM update if CWR is installed.
Is there an easy way to do this?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=914690
Thanks for the link, but the solution given there does not work.
The problem I am having is because CWR is installed on the Nook internal memory, but CM7 is installed in the SD card.
As of right now, I CANNOT BOOT INTO CWR. When I boot into CM7 (installed in SD card and not Nook's Internal memory) and try to reboot to CWR, the Nook will boot but then just go back to CM7
Did you try shutting the NC off, removing the SD card, then holding the power and 'n' button? I don't know if that will work unless you've got a custom rom...

Need help to restore to stock 1.3

I bought a nook color for my 9 year old son as a gift, mainly for him to read more books. After browsed this site, I was able to create a bootable SD of CM7, and then I rooted the NC. Now I am thinking maybe it is not a good idea to give my son a rooted NC because he can load game on it.
I did a factory reset, everything back to stock 1.3, but when I use the bootable SD to try to boot to CM7, always failed, even I made a new CM7 SD, first it will boot to SD and install CM7, but after restart, it always goes to nook stock rom, did something wrong?
Thanks for your help.

Please explain all the steps.....
Sounds like your Nook CM7 "install" SD card is actually a bootable SD card.....
Will CM load with the card in? Is CM not loading only when you take the card out?
If these statements are true, its because CM is actually installed on your SD card and running from there, nothing is actually being installed to your nooks internal memory.

Hi, thanks for your replay. After tried lots of flushing, I finally found what's wrong. Yes, my SD is a bootable, what I like is, most time NC just run stock rom, only books, no games, for my son. When I use it, I can plug in sd card and run CM7, and use it as a regular tablet (poor kid).
I put CM7 install zip and google apps zip on the bootable SD, it flashed the rom and the gapps no problem, but after a reboot, it never be able to boot from SD card again. The problem is, I shouldn't put both zip at the same time, has to be flash CM7 first, then reboot to CWM again to flash gapps.
