Just rooted my Nook Color and love the added functionality. Now which web browser do you suggest specifically for the NC?
I tried a couple and settled on Opera. Skyfire isn't bad but has screen scaling issues. Give them all shot.

Browser for Nook Color
So far I have been using the Dolphin HD browser and like it, I have also tried Skyfire and of the two of them Dolphin gets my vote.
Does Opera go to landscape for anyone? I can't get it to switch.
The stock browser is working fine for me, after trying the alternatives I didn't see enough of a speed increase to make up for the other issues they introduce into the browsing experience on the NC (formatting errors, artifacts etc) to make me switch.
I'm using dolphin IMHO it works way better that the stock app. I don't know what artefacts the above poster is talking about.

Dolphin HD is leaps and bounds better than the stock browser.
Dolphin

Opera mini for basic surfing just because of the speed. Do not use it for picture quality, video or anything where you care about the password, its proxied and compressed.
I've been starting to use Dolphin mini and am liking it so far. regular Dolphin HD just seems slow but it is better then stock.
I use dolphin hd, i like the full web pages, opposed to mobile versions. As well as bookmarks to sd, it just has more features than any other browser and was meant to be used with tabs.

I am pretty sure that you can turn off the compression in Opera in the settings the opera mini works great.

Dolphin hd
Tried Opera and Skyfire. Both had one problem or another. Plus, while Opera might be faster, it did not look as nice. It is a browser after all!

How can I configure the search results from the address bar or the search widget on the home screen? The results are always the mobile version of Google.
I'm enjoying the Firefox beta. I like the look and functionality over Dolphin.
I use Miren Browser. It's got a nice interface and is pretty fast. You can download from the market for free.
Those of you using Dolphin mini, does multi-touch work for you? It does in Dolphin HD for me, but not in Dolphin Mini.
I have installed the multi-touch hack, but it still didn't work for Dolphin mini...

Dolphin HD - Mini didn't do pinch zoom for me either. I created gestures for my top 5 sites - works terrific.
I'm currently using the Firefox beta, its really smooth, although maybe not the fastest. I would use Miren browser if pinch to zoom worked in it. Does anyone know why it doesn't work?
Firefox/Fennec all the way.
It's smooth, has a nice interface and syncs with firefox sync. There are even addons you can install.
If you want to check it out, here's a link.

The issue is that installing 1.1 seems to cause DolphinHD to adopt the same pinch-zoom behavior as the stock browser. It is noticeably more laggy and seems to constantly try to do some sort of scaling/page formatting/text wrap or something that adds an extra half second to every simple zoom action. It also seems to "grab" links as I'm zooming and registers them as long presses, something it doesn't do with 1.0.1. It feels less precise and just wonky, which is frustrating because I'm 100% happy with the way it works before I upgrade.
1.1 has some very tangible benefits that I would like to have, but I use my NC primarily as a web browsing tablet when I'm not reading and this issue has been a deal-breaker for me in regards to leaving 1.0.1. I've upgraded to 1.1 several different times, using several different methods, but always end up switching back after using DolphinHD for a few minutes.
Am I the only one that notices this? Is there some sort of system-wide "engine" that handles pinch-zoom? And if there is, would it be possible to block those related files from updating?
EDIT: I've made a short/sloppy video to demonstrate the problem I'm having a little better. The quality is pretty bad, but it shows the lag and link "grabbing" issues fairly well. I should also mention that I've now tried DolphinHD 4.2/4.3/4.4, Dolphin Mini and the stock browser on 1.1 and they all behave identically in this regard. The only change between the first clip and the second is the upgrade from 1.0.1 to 1.1.
Here's the video.
I'm on 1.1 autonooter 3. My NC was shipped with 1.0.1 and I spent little to no time on 1.0.1 before I upgraded and rooted.
For what it's worth, the stock browser does pinch zoom on 1.1.
However, If you prefer Dolphin, I can understand that.
I have read that if you downgrade dolphin, you can get more stability. Not sure if you will retain pinch zoom or not. I do not use dolphin so I can't confirm.
I should have mentioned that this is with DolphinHD 4.2 on both 1.0.1 and 1.1.
Basically,
DolphinHD 4.2 + 1.0.1 = perfect, lag free pinch-zoom
DolphinHD 4.2 OR 4.3 OR 4.4 OR Mini + 1.1 = weird, laggy pinch-zoom
My uneducated guess is that there is some sort of underlying engine that handles pinch-zoom and page formatting/scaling that gets changed during the 1.1 upgrade. I've fiddled with all of the settings in the stock browser and Dolphin and none of them change this behavior. I haven't tested with any of the other 3rd party browsers.
Miemens, it is in the changelog of the app in the marketplace. Looks like they are working on a fix and workaround is last version.

That is a different issue. My problem is that pinch-zoom behaves completely differently between 1.0.1 and 1.1, both running the identical version (4.2) of DolphinHD.
Have you tried Dolphin Mini? I found that while it doesn't have pinch to zoom on 1.0.1, it is much faster and smoother when compared to any other browser. However, I did read that Dolphin Mini's pinch to zoom works on 1.1, so perhaps it would behoove you to try it out.

I just gave Mini a try and it does the same thing. I also tried DolphinHD 4.3 and the brand new 4.4 and they do it as well.
Have you tried another browser?? I found Dolphin slow and quirky, where Opera 10 works awesome on the NC (and on my Nexus One).
I've tried Opera Mobile under 1.0.1 and didn't like it. I'm mainly trying to figure out what it is exactly that changes between 1.0.1 and 1.1 to cause a behavior difference in Dolphin. I'm very very satisfied with Dolphin HD 4.2 under 1.0.1.
Dolphin HD is awesome...but...no pinch to zoom

Hey there, i have NC 1.0.1. rooted via auto-nooter, i've been taking care of random issues, and i'm stuck on this zoom thing. I can use the gestures with Dolphin and created one that will zoom the screen, but i thought from reading about Dolphin, and by reading this post which i searched to find if this was already being discussed that this browser indeed should do pinch to zoom. For me though, it isn't working. I looked at Dolphin's menu for a setup area where maybe it wasn't enabled right away, but no dice. Anybody know how to get it if it's not immediately working?
thanks in advance!!

With 1.0.1 you have to downgrade to DolphinHD 4.2, which is available on their website (though that seems to be down right now) to keep pinch-zoom from breaking altogether.
Ive tried stock rom 1.1.0 with autonooter 3.0. Honeycomb v4 and nookie 0.6.8. All of them installed on the internal memory. Id like to keep nookie because of flash player but browsing with it is awfully frustrating. Ive used stock web browser and dolphin browser. Why is it like that? other apps such games run smooth but only web browsing is horrible

I've become a recent convert to Miren. It's the only browser that seems to play well with my stock 1.1 setup. It's fast and has a metric ton of settings. Dolphin mini is pretty good but it crashed on https for me.

Did you speed up the CPU? Is it a network problem. Mine seems to work fine. Is it slow for u?

Regarding https failure? Have no idea what's causing it. It happened after root, before and after OC. Tried two re-roots. No go. All I know is no browser I've tried works except Miren. Luckily, Miren is a very nice browser...
I'm using Dolphin HD on nookie froyo. It's not desktop smooth but its smooth enough. I'll have to try that other browser you mentioned to compare.

That is because games use the GPU to accelerate their GUIs, while the web browsers you mentioned only use CPU.
If you want GPU based web browsing, your only option on Android is Opera.

Browser lag is usually caused by flash plugins loading. If you set the plugin settings in Dolphin to "on demand", it'll make scrolling much smoother.
The reason you probably don't see this issue in eclair is there is no flash, so no plugins loading...

I didnt even install flash for the few minutes i tried it until i went back to stock
You shouldnt have had to, the 0.6.8 custom nookie froyo image already has flash 10.1 installed. You should have been prompted upon initial setup of Dolphin HD about what to do with flash content. The screen is really easy to bypass without reading it so perhaps you didnt notice.
Surfing with Dolphin HD in Froyo is laggy, particularly with flash sites, when using stock cpu clock settings. If you bump up to 1100Mhz using SetCPU with ondemand enabled and adjust Up Threshold down from 95% to something south of 50% (personally I use 45%) the lagginess is greatly reduced.
Dalingrin's latest 3/8 and 3/10 kernels are REALLY PROMISING with interactive govenors setup to cut down the lag. I'm not qualified to say what it is exactly that's being worked on but basically the lag you see is due to the CPU ramping up in clock speed to handle the load and these newer kernels are trying to address that. The new kernels have some wifi bugs right now on the froyo build but Dalingrin's working on it. Towards the end of the thread there was a working kernel posted by funcrusher (page 77 of the dalingrin kernel thread) that seems to be the most stable build for now for froyo without too much wifi issues. Once the kinks are ironed out on the interactive govenor kernels though Nookie Froyo's going to be SWEET with that kernel. Then again, CM7 with interactive is probably really nice too (havent tried CM7 yet).

Well flash or not an overclock kernel in Froyo does a lot for browsing experience. Thats more of the point I was trying to make.
Like I said, try other kernels in Froyo for a better idea of what is possible. A 1100Mhz kernel by dalingrin with interactive govenor is slick, its just the wifi kinks that need to be ironed out. In a week or two I wouldnt be surprised if it's resolved.

wouldn't an overclocked processor drain battery faster? if i have to overclock the processor so i can have the same experience as on stock rom doesn't seem to be very efficient.

It can, depending on what you have it set to and what you are running. You have a bit more control with setCPU on how your cpu is going to behave. Without a doubt, if you are looking to push the nook to the point where its silky smooth at everything in froyo you would want to try the interactive govenor kernel but live with lower battery life.
The experience isnt the same though. If you feel it is then stay where you are with stock.
Right now I'm running a kernel from the dalingrin thread that was posted I believe on page 77 of the thread where wifi is stable and my battery life is good with the setcpu settings I'm using.

Frankly I don't see what the "awful" is all about - I find browsing to be much more enjoyable on Nookie Froyo than on the B&N stock browser, with the exception of needing to use Button Savior to access the Back and Menu keys. Even without overclock, pinch-zoom is far smoother on NF. I've also been playing with Mobile Firefox as a second browser but some of its features aren't ready for prime-time.
I've got nookie froyo installed and the browser has been fantastic. I even watched an episode of Californication via Flash this morning.
The only problems I've actually had are with the Theme I installed. It made my stock browser FC, but now I use dolphin HD.
The nook is a hot product right now, once Honeycombs AOSP comes and dev's have more time to update roms like Nookie Froyo we should have pefect devices.
Here's 2 alternative browser I like and use...
Miren taken from another forum run great on the gtab (will update once installed)
UC is a great browser as well.
+1,000 on Miren. It's my browser of choice for Android devices. You can change the settings to allow you to use every inch of your screens real-estate, plus it's fast and intuitive.
Curious to know what advantages it has on Dolphin HD.
Is the Miren browser compatible with Flash 10.2?
I tried Miren for about an hour but it ran really slow for me. I do like the features and how it renders compared to Dolphin HD. For now speed is my main issue so I'll have to check back on this browser after a few updates and see if it gets better.
I really like Skyfire 3.0. Though I haven't figured out how to close individual tabs yet.
Can someone tell me how to set MIUI for desktop view? All the sites are coming up mobile.
Thanks
EDIT: Switched to the Miren Browser and took care of the problem.

Can this be ported to Gingerbread in general or to CM7 maybe?
I always thought of the android stock browser being chrome, but regardless no i doubt it just wait till its released for other version by google i seriously doubt your missing much.... firefox turned out to be utter crap.
I would love that
I would love that because it was really glitchy in NOVA CM9, but now I'm using modded gingerbread and using dolphin
there is no way to port chrome to android versions below 4.0. Sorry. It just requires full hardware acceleration, which we dont have either way..
i tried all (and i mean ALL) the browsers i could find, opera was darn good, but eats a LOT of ram (i was playing music and browsing with opera and suddenly the music player got killed...wtf. and opera process was using 170 mb of ram).
so, the best browser is ....maxthon browser, its smoother than dolphin for me, almost same smoothness as opera, has some cool features and gestures. try it out
