[Q] apk that won't install - HD2 Android Themes and Apps

I am looking for a dummies solution that I cannot find anywhere. I have tried to install some apk files, that end up giving me a "Application not installed". I have googled a little, but I cannot seem to find a solution. I have noticed that some apk files say signed and they will install. In certain situations I cannot find a signed version of the apk that I am looking for.

It would also be helpful what apks you are referring to.

perhaps the apk in question is corrupt?

yeah that would be useful. I know if its a system based apk your trying to move you usually have to replace it in the system folder. it could just be buggy. I once had to freeze the default music app to install miui music.

Opps (I did say dummy) - In Futureshocks Miui rom, he does not have Miui Back-Up installed (Odd I think), so I got a Miui Back-Up apk from another extracted Miui Rom and tried to load it, but got the dreaded "Application not installed". I saw some posts about Root Explorer, Mounting, Permissions but I could not understand the jargon. Is there a simpler way. Tks

why not post the apk? let peeps take a look. (saying from an extracted rom - very vague, lots of reasons why things may not work.) also links to the specific things you are talking about help.

I guess its a system apk for miui so it's not possible to install it individually. Try building your own and include that apk.

Yes that is correct, but I read a post that mention there is a way of changing the permission as follows (My comment are in CAPS)
1.Paste the apk into /system/app
2.hit the mount r/w button - I DON'T UNDERSTAND THIS
3.long press the apk, select change permissions - WHEN I LONG PRESS IN ROOT EXPLORER I DO NOT SEE PERMISSIONS AS AN OPTION
4.check read and write on the "user" row, read on the "group" row, and read on the "others" row - WHAT WOULD I CHANGE THIS TO FOR BACK-UP TO WORK
5.hit ok, and reboot
6.enjoy
Does this make sense to anyone.
Apk attached.

Hey
for point 2. look for grey button top right labelled: Mount R/O or Mount R/W
if the btn display is Mount R/W then you are in read only mode & vice versa
and point 3. if the cant see the "PERMISSIONS" option try scrolling down.
as for changing permissions, do this when you have the apk in place.

My comment is after your all caps. I believe you are using root explorer.
1.Paste the apk into /system/app
2.hit the mount r/w button - I DON'T UNDERSTAND THIS -you can see this on the topmost part below the notification bar. Make sure r/w is on the left side not inside the button. If it is inside the button then click it to mount.
3.long press the apk, select change permissions - WHEN I LONG PRESS IN ROOT EXPLORER I DO NOT SEE PERMISSIONS AS AN OPTION -you can see permissions options when you long press the apk.
4.check read and write on the "user" row, read on the "group" row, and read on the "others" row - WHAT WOULD I CHANGE THIS TO FOR BACK-UP TO WORK -if you read it well, then it's clear that user must have checks on read and write while group and othera only needs read check. This is in the permissions options.
5.hit ok, and reboot
6.enjoy
Does this make sense to anyone.
-of course it makes sense if you just follow that simple instruction you posted.

In a previous rom (Futureshocks) that grey box showing Mount never appeared, hence why I couldn't understand what I was doing wrong. On my lastest rom tryout, it shows up....... Now in the meantime when I press permissions I get a message "Warning, apk cannot be changed because the file is system read only". Am I back to square one...............

(Backup Files ADDED!) [How To] [MOD] Undo Webtop Mod [MOD] [How To]

For almost a full day I tried undoing the hack with adb shell in order to install the beta update. You must have your Atrix Rooted and have SuperUser Okay lets start.
1) Check if you have WebtopModBackup in /mmt/sdcard (if not then dl)
2) Download from the market Super Manager https://market.android.com/details?id=gpc.myweb.hinet.net.TaskManager
3) Open Super Manager and go to settings "Enable ROOT function" give SuperUser permission
4) Go back to Super Manager and click on "File Explorer"
5) Locate "WebtopModBackup" once in their you should see 6 files.
6) hold down on the first one (one by one) and select "rename"
7) Erase .bak from all 6 files
8) Check all six files and click "Copy" (its the 3 icon on the bottom looks like 2 papers on top of each other)
9) Once you do that click on "Back up level folder" 3 times (You should be on "/" section
10) Go down to System (folder) (it will ask you 3 options R/w, read only, and so on.. Select R/W then go to "app"
11) Under "apps" (/system/app) Paste the files you copied! The 5th icon on the bottom (looks like a clipboard)
12) You will notice "force close over and over" This is normal" All you have to do from here on is turn off the phone. Lock the phone and hold the power button and click on "shut off"
Your all done! download the update and enjoy.
Note: You will lose SuperUser and Root Acc

I can confirm the instructions work fine and I've successfully updated. Unfortunately, I performed the process before I realized anyone might be missing the files or I could have upped them for you all...

[Q] Hosed up my contacts after root and app un-install --Help please--

---Solved---
So, I pulled a noob move and uninstalled a number of apps using titanium backup without understanding the repercussions of each. After uninstalling a few at a time, I would reboot my device and everything seemed fine. Little did I know, after uninstalling most, if not all, of the bloat I am unable to click a contact's picture to bring up the submenu and select call or text or whatever.
I didn't write down a list of items that I uninstalled and I should have frozen the apps prior to uninstall. I'm not a complete idiot and stayed away from obvious apps that shouldn't be uninstalled and what I thought was ALL motroblur stuff.
Long story short, I get a "com.motorola.contacts" stopped unexpectedly error(force close prompt) after trying to view a contact. I can look through all of the dialer menus showing contacts and recent calls and whatnot but I can't view a specific contact in detail. The searching I've done seems like there are a number of apps that use com.motorola.contacts and I believe I still have all of them installed but apparently not since there isn't a ton of detail on the latest motoblur that the D3 runs.
Does anyone have an idea of what apps use this process on the D3?
Thanks.
Problem solved.

Thanks again Javier
Same situation here. I'm guessing it was the yahoo contact storage, but I'm not entirely sure. I tried pushing the yahoo app back into the system folder, but it still throws the error, even after resetting the phone.
Keep in mind that the entire system has been dumped, so I think it's as easy as grabbing the necessary apks from the system dump and put it back on the Droid 3.
It might be the best idea to reference the original list and restore what's missing then:
http://pastebin.com/HEtYBmuz
I got this same message. I defrosted all and redid. I think its the authenticators that's causing them, I re freezed stuff I didn't want and everytime I finished I checked to see if my contacts were working. They are as of now :]

As it turns out, I was partially correct. The files that were missing were "YahooContacts.apk", "YahooContacts.odex", "blur_yahoo.apk" and "blur_yahoo.odex" (I've attached them for your convenience). Move these files onto the SD card, and using root explorer, move them to "/system/app". The important part: Once you move these files to this directory, you must change their permissions and their owner. Here are the steps if you are using root explorer:
1. Mount the directory as R/W in the top right corner.
2. Press and hold the file, and go to permissions. Change the permissions so that the Owner has read and write privileges, Group has read privileges, and Others have read privileges. Do this for the other files you copy over (This is important! These won't be recognized as system apps if the permissions are messed up).
3. Press and hold the file again, and change both the owner and group to root. Do this for all the files you copy over as well.
4. Reboot.
This pretty much solved the problem for me. Now I know better than to go uninstalling willy-nilly.

Javier, thanks a ton, you saved my ass. Also, this finally gave me an excuse to purchase Root Explorer.
As far as you know, is there any risk to setting these files with such high permissions?
Also, do we know what the chances are, of getting rid of these files all together or is that going to require a custom ROM?
As far as I can tell, these are the standard permissions set for every system app. There shouldn't be any risks.
As for getting rid of all these files...that may require a custom ROM. Not entirely sure.
Oh, and it was nothing, really. I'm just glad I got myself out of that mess.
followed instructions, still not working
i restored the yahoo stuff, changed permissions and owner to -rw-r--r-- and root; changed group to root as well. rebooted and contacts is still crashing. could there possibly be more apps associated with contacts than just yahoo? i put blur_email back as well but that hasn't helped things.

I couldn't get it to work either until I tried this http://www.droidforums.net/forum/te...tacts-wont-display-droid-x-w-gingerbread.html
See post #3. After doing this, I pulled battery, turned back on. It boot-looped once, then started up. Took a minute to load, but viola! My contacts worked again!
Hi Javier78,
Thanks in the first place for such a great post. I also had the forced closed contacts problem and i took all the steps that are needed but the problem still exists.
I placed the 4 Yahoo files in system/app with Root Explorer, changed the things that you said and also the owner to root.
Then i removed the battery, put it back in but i still have the forced closed problem.
What did i do wrong in the first place?

Nevermind, found the problem. I needed the exact files for my Atrix 4G with the same android version.

I have a question about step "3". I'm using "Root Explorer" on a Droid Bionic and I see no way of changing the owner and group to "root" as "Root" doesn't show up anywhere on the permissions screen. I'm thinking that this last step is preventing me from solving my problem.
Could someone set an old fart straight on how this is accomplished?
EDIT: Also, I just noticed that I uninstalled the Yahoo Mail Authenticator and most likely that is my problem. Does anyone have the files I can put back into the system folder?
Thanks,
Got it. My problem was I deleted the com.motorola.blur.provider.yahoo files needed. Once I obtained those three files it works fine now.

Yes, thanks a lot to all of you, guys... just couple of additional tips from complete beginner as myself:
- In order to be able to copy files there, you must turn the "Airplane mode" ON.
- Even if the "Execute" permission is already turnd ON and seems tasty (after all, you are trying to EXECUTE these functions ... UNTICK it. otherwise it wont work. Simply do EXACTLY as you are told on the posts above.
Lastly: In my case Yahoo stuff was already there (previously I have frozen it using TB and then found here at XDA that I have to defrost it) ... I brought myself this error by freezing some other apps... if there was comprehensive list of what does what and if it is safe to freeze/uninstallit, it would be helpful.
My current culprits are:
Work Contacts
Dlna
GoogleServicesFramwork
BlurContacts
BlurContactsSync
SmartDock
KpiLogger
VoiceSearch
VoiceReadout
SimContactsAdapter
GoogleContactsSyncAdapter
... to name some of many.
- Things get even more difficult considering that different people use different services: myself, I have all my contacts on Exchange and synchronize using Touchdown - so I personally do not need Google stuff related neither to contacts, nor to calendar - but others live different life.
i am having the same problem with my rooted droid x2 i have tried the this process but no luck

If you're using root explorer, and you've successfully navigated your way to to the system/app section... select and continue to hold until the options menu displays, then you can scroll down to "change owner" (it's a few below permissions and properties, just keep scrolling until you come to it) then it's a simple drop option screen. The window doesn't look like you can scroll down, but you can. Also, someone posted a zip file for the yahoo apps, but those will only address certain sync issues (that most people in this post seem to be having). Be sure to have the unzipped files located on you "sdcard-ext" for moving. You'll have to move them one-by-one and change the permissions and owner/group settings for each once they're in system/app location.

You need to be rooted, at least to be able to use AntTek and Root Uninstaller, and no, you won't loose it in case of FW update, unless the upgrade is for the camera too... but the process is fast. 5 minutes and its done

Thanks Dude, but did download the ICS Camera, to take pictures without shutter sound.
Ruedas, a rooted phone doesnt receive OTA updates, right?
strange thing that i downloaded the apk, tried to install it but wouldnt work even after changing permissions. Had no camera forawhile. Downloaded the stock apk, just copy and pasted it in the folder and all of a sudden i have my camera back with no shutter sound...no idea why but thanks
I'm trying my best to fix (IOW; mute) the shutter sound on my GF's O4X. While I believe I understand how this is done, I'm not able to actually get it done.
I've managed to get the phone rooted (thanks to alexp999's simple to follow guide). If I've understood things correctly; I now need to replace the original camera.apk with the modified one found in this thread.
Problem is that, in the /system/app folder, both renaming files (the old camera.apk) and copying files (the new camera.apk) to the folder fails.
Anyone able to see what I'm missing / doing wrong? Any help would be thoroughly appreciated!..

Problem is that, in the /system/app folder, both renaming files (the old camera.apk) and copying files (the new camera.apk) to the folder fails.
Anyone able to see what I'm missing / doing wrong? Any help would be thoroughly appreciated!..

I have my way...
With "Root Uninstaller Pro" I uninstall the original one, than I grab the modded file and past it in .../system/app and I install it from there.
Reboot and its done

Thanks for the reply and suggestion RuedasLocas!
Titanium Backup seems to have the option to uninstall system apps, I'll give that a go. Would however like to figure out how to copy files to the system/app folder before I do that (given that this is required to re-install/enable the camera). Have tried with both ES File Manager and Total Commander; both have been given SU-privelages, both are able to browse to the folder, neither is able to copy files to or rename files in the folder...

Use "AntTek" explorer, works together, or alone if you wish, with Root Uninstaller, you can copy/paste or just cut/paste...

Tried AnTek Explorer; What an interesting file manager! Will have to test this for a longer period of time, could possibly become my new goto file manager. Thanks for the tip!..
Though I couldn't get the new/modified camera.apk to the system/app directory. Though this time it failed with an error messge; "Error Don't have enough permission to do this action" (see attached screenshot). Have double-checked that "Native mode" is enabled within AnTek and that its (permanently) enabled in SuperSU. Not sure how I can give an app even more permissions...

Just reboot the phone and it should be enough.
Some apps need a reboot to work properly.

Thanks for all the help! Rebooting allowed me to rename files. Then I finally figured out why copying files to the system folder failed (or at least partly); For reasons unknown to me, I weren't allowed to copy/move files directly from the external_sd card to the system/app directory, Had to first move the to an internal location, then I could move then to the desired location!
End result; The annoying shutter sound is gone! :victory:
Again; Thanks for all the help!

camera zoom fx, where is apk?

goings nuts. dug google for an hour, run search with root explorer, dug around on xda, turned phone upside down - but no luck. its not in data/app, system/app, cache/download, sdcard/download, to name some. its silly that single apk could be buried god knows where on android.
really run out of ideas where to search. any suggestions? thanks.
Probably in /sdcard/.android_secure then.
Check if it's installed on the sdcard in the program manager. If it is you can move it back to phone storage, which *will* be in /data/app.

nice suggestions - thanks trym!
but no. it's not in .android_secure and it's not installled on sd. should be in data/app but no.
Are you sure you're looking for the right name? Remember, the filenames in /data/app need not even resemble the name of the app.
However, should be easy to find anyway.
Uninstall the app.
List the contents of data/app
Install it
List contents again and find the extra filename.

sure, i'm not quite certain what string to look for aside of obvious "zoom" or similar. however, when listing /app directories, the root browser displays the app icons so it's not hard to identify what's what but i just cannot locate it anyway. but thanks for effort!
Turns out I'd actually bought this app, sorry for not remembering. Installed it, mine is named "slide.cameraZoom-1.apk"

i also bought it, but it wasn't in data/app.
anyway, status report: after last update from play store day ago it appeared in data/app under upper mentioned name. copied apk finally. where it was before the update remains a mystery.
Dont know whether its a nice suggestion or not
But if u r a root user dn u can download root app delete from market and in that just click on the app it will show u the destination of the apk.

[MOD] PRL Write Enabler for Sprint Galaxy S4 [MDC][MDL][MJA]

First off this work is based on Digiblur's PRL Write Enabler from the Sprint Galaxy S3 forum. I simply modified it & packaged it for our Sprint Galaxy S4 devices.
Here is the original S3 post that this was found in... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2159054
Also, post #8 below provides additional info.
I tested it by flashing with TWRP and it worked on my stock, rooted S4 with the MDC and MDL releases.
If you're on a stock rooted Rom and not using TWRP, you can just copy the HiddenMenu.apk from inside the zip file downloaded into /system/app/ and overwrite the one that's there. (You'll need a root enabled file browser to do this of course).
Thanks to Unknownforce here is a version for MJA...
http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23212708291676468
Enjoy!!
This certainly will save me from having to use CDMA WS to switch like I just did yesterday. 55014 was not working well for me in my market so I switched back to 25014.

You mean the install of the zip?
If so, you can pull the APK out of the zip and replace HiddenMenu.apk in the system folder (make a backup first). You may want to also set the permissions to rw-r-r after replacing the system app. Reboot, then you should be good to go.
@ChadH42,
I know it seems like I'm harping on you but I'm really not..
You need to update the OP on - 1. What is this? 2. What does this do? 3. Why is this in the Development Section.. ?
A good OP leads to less questions.. Development Sections aren't for information. That would be considered a Discussion Thread that belongs in General.
Let's keep the Dev section clean from the start.
My suggestion - Edit the OP on the What's/Why's?/How To's and you won't get posts like mine.
To the OP, updated your title as [WIP], and I suggest you provided additional information so that folks aren't bricking their new devices.
I will check in, if you need anything, let me know.
What this MOD does (in case the OP takes a little while to chime in)
What this MOD does is modifies our ##DATA# (select View) menu to allow for the PRL Write option to appear and function. With this menu option, the user can change their PRL on the fly from the device itself by placing a copy of the desired PRL in the root directory of Internal Storage and name it "test.prl" (no quotes), dial ##DATA# (choose View), tap Write PRL, tap the sub-menu option Write PRL ---wait--- and then the device reboots with the test.prl PRL applied upon reboot. Not every PRL works and sometimes it takes a couple of tries.
A tip for multiple PRL options is to, of course, keep a folder of the PRLs you like and keep them labeled in there. Copy the desired PRL to proper place as needed and just remember to rename the copy to "test.prl". Switch back and forth as you please. I hope this helps clear some confusion and helps some find purpose with the MOD like I have.
For a clear set of instructions that I did not want to just copy verbatim, check the link below. Also, if you are having issues with the zip not installing in CWM, just extract the APK from the ZIP (inside the system/app folder), use Root Explorer or your favorite root-access file explorer to place the APK in the APP folder, apply the proper permissions and reboot.

So I unzipped the file, replaced the hidden menu original apk with the new one, then set permissions, rebooted, then tried ##3282# and the view and edit options do not appear.. .. It just blanks out the items I just entered

What ROM are you using?

I just tried this mod with the Force ROM and it did the same thing (blank options). The only thing I can think of is that it works with the odex version of the stock ROM so maybe its a problem with deodex ROMs of which Force is one.
O okay. Its currently not a necessary thing for me at the moment, just nice for when I travel to Alabama. Hopefully later on someone gets it working on deodex.

I am actually running it on the Rooted Stock DeOdexed ROM. So I don't think it is an Odex/DeOdex issue...might be a Force ROM issue.
Also, moot point for Force ROM (1.0+) anyway because the PRL Write mod is already included with that.
I'm also having this problem and I'm pretty sure it was working this morning. I haven't flashed anything since then.
edit-- I tried:
1. wiping both cache's
2. killing background process "OIThiddenmenu"
neither fixed it.
I reinstalled the stock odex ROM and flashed this again and it worked.
Just an FYI, OP, I get Error Status 6 when trying to flash this via recovery, which indicates one of two things. Either the format of the file is incorrect or there is a syntax error. The syntax looks fine, but opening in basic Notepad shouldn't "look pretty" like it currently does. So it's likely it was edited with a non-Unix-compatible text editor like Notepad or MS-Word...
To make modifications to an updater-script (or just about any Android/Linux files like this) you need something like Notepad++ or gVim.
Anyways, I did a quick test with this, and it does in fact not work on my ROM as it is, but I see why it's failing, but I don't know what exactly it's trying to reference yet. (It fails with an id number instead of a name, so I'll have to de-compile some things to find it.)
I'm not sure it's a ROM issue or a MOD issue yet. (meaning it might have to be updated for each custom ROM, depending on how they are configured) But I'll track it down and update when I can.

I had the error status 6 problem in the beginning and thought I fixed it. You are correct that I used MS WordPad to edit the files.

I think TWRP can read the non Unix type characters, which is why it works on a different recovery.
I'm hoping it's a mod issue and I can just modify the mod to work universally regardless of the rom. But we'll see.
