Do I really have to unlock before flashing Gingerbread? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

As the title of the thread says, I read the guide to install JVK/JVA/JVB and it says that before flashing I must have my phone unlocked.
When it was only JVK in that thread, I didn't see this note so I flashed it. That was 2 weeks ago and I haven't had any issue with the Network.
I haven't unlocked my phone and I don't want to because I read the guide for unlocking and I can't use adb.
So, can I flash JVB now? Are there any issues that my phone can suffer? I asked in the thread this question but nobody answered me, so that's why I made a new thread.

I'm using a JVB based gingerbread rom without any issues and never unlocked it... In fact this is the first time I heard this...

*These firmwares are for International I9000 Galaxy S version, your device must be unlocked before flashing these firmwares.
So, I'm waiting for other opinions...

AS they are unofficial firmwares i guess instruction might be for safety .
Official updates via Kies when 2.3 is released will not need unlocked phones .
jje

flash and see yourself !

I flashed a phone with no root or unlock from 2.1 to 2.3.3 works
I had a hard time trying to root 2.1 and got it boot looping so the last a tempt was a full flash of jvk work and saved the day.
I then was able to use cf-root 3.1 to get root and app from the market to unlock.

I'm ready to do it, but what issues can it cause? I heard something about a code at the first boot that you must enter but I don't know exactly.
Can I downgrade to 2.2.1 stock for example if I have problems?
Edit: I flashed JVB without having any issue. Thanks for the help anyway, I was pretty doubtful about what can happen. All the things work.
Cheers!

[Q] Which firmware should I use?

Hi guys, I'm new here! And to the Android scene in general. Before you ask, I've been trying to use the search function, but unfortunately it says try 10 minutes later, and it said that around 15 minutes ago...
I've recently taken interest in Darkyy's 5.4 rom, but I understand with most custom made things, there can be bugs involved, and I want to prepare for the worst case scenario and be able to flash back to the original firmware, so I've got a few questions.
1)I was just wondering, which firmware is the one I need?
I live in Australia, and I am on the 3 network, and have recently updated to 2.2 officially via KIES.
If it matters, I've also rooted and voodoo one click lagfixed it, along with officially unlocked the phone via the 3 network.
PDA: I9000HVJP4
PHONE: I9000HVJP3
CSC: I9000HUTJP4
2) If I reflash original firmware, will the phone still be unlocked, or will I have to unlock the phone again with 3? I'm pretty sure they keep records of that stuff... so will they be willing to do it again for me if that is the case? Or will it not relock itself?
Thanks guys!
If you reflash it using the firmware from samfirmware.com, it should remain unlocked.
You will need to remove all lagfix before reflashing it. Always remember to remove lagfix before flashing. The root can stay.
As for Darkyy's rom, I don't know what on earth happened lately, but he completely changed the instructions for no reason (far as I can tell). The old instructions were simply to flash back to an old Eclair firmware, and then install his rom. Works every single time.
Thanks man, I'll remember to do that, but does it matter which firmware version I go with if I want to restore my original firmware, perhaps even for warrantee reasons? I have a tendancy to mess things up beyond repair...
I'd hate to bump my own topic but... Nobody can help?
As you have jp4 you should flash that from samfirmware to get back to stock should things go wrong.

[Q] GB Bootloaders

I have moved from froyo to gingerbread at last and despite having a few little issues I am happy with the end result, however, I did find some of the 'instructions' surrounding the process both on here and other sites to be extremely vague, one of the main points of issue was regards ensuring you have a specific version fully installed before you commit to a custom rom.
I understand this relates to the installation of newer bootloaders that are able to support the new gingerbread code as well as older froyo.
I then found a post that shows how to avoid the full installs and only update the bootloader section itself, this has been tried and tested and accepted as working.
I have found that some posters have only succeeded with version xxx, some say to only update to the latest yyy, understandable and easy to follow....
But does anyone know of a location for the bootloaders ONLY, to use via odin?
And as an aside to that, how to check the actual version of the bootloader?
From my HTC days, it came up on a screen during flashing etc, but I have not seen any like that on the SGS.
I have checked the usual places, but they only seem to contain kernels and modems, not the bootloaders.
Any help apprecated
Cheers
Here are the standalone bootloaders for Froyo and Gingerbread put together by Nitr8 : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1089989
I don't know of anyway to check your bootloader version but if your running GB fine you know your on a Gingerbread bootloader. Froyo works with GB bootloaders so the only reason you may want to change them is if your moving to a CM7 rom which requires the froyo one. This thread tends to explain everything quite well: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1011701
Hope this helps

Sure does, my reason to determine the bootloader version is as follows, I was looking to try out an alternate rom and it said you MUST have a JVO bootloader or the rom would have issues.... hence looking for versions as such.
I did have an issue and before I reported back, i thought to locate the JVO bootloader and install it first and see if the problems continued...
Cheers
Yeah, the easiest way to acquire specific bootloader is probably to download an entire rom, eg JVO including bootloaders

Help an old-timer

I'd first like to apologize if these questions have already been answered. I haven't flashed a rom in nearly a year. When at&t put 2.2 on the market I downloaded it. I absolutely hate it. It's worse than 2.1 by far (with the exception of netflix). I wanted to flash to fasty's rom and noticed the instructions said I needed to be on 2.2. Has the process for flashing changed? Can I still use odin 1 click stock? Are there any stickies or threads that already address this issue?

Unless its a gingerbread (2.3.x) rom all you need is cwm and then you can flash it, no matter what version of android you are currently on. If its a gingerbread rom you will need to flash bootloaders with odin first also.
If you have used odin one click before and your phone didn't spaz out (some newer phones do) then it is fine to keep using it to return to stock if desired....

Problem with my Bell i9000M (Needs serious help)

Hi XDA developers,
I'm a newbie. I've been searching posts on xda and still couldn't remedied the problem. I currently have the i9000m from Bell Canada. I upgraded my i9000m to 2.3.3 Gingerbread earlier in Kies. Recently, I've been trying to unlock my phone and without rooting, the best solution seems to be going back to Eclair, so I followed the youtube tutorial by djeddieone and tried to go back to Eclair using Odie. It basically flashes a rom (I suspect that's a T-mobile rom that shouldn't be flashed onto my phone) in Odin. My phone no longer boots and cannot get into recovery mode. (When I try to start the phone, there are random colour dots showing on the screen.) The only mode that works seems to be downloading mode. I think I need to flash a stock rom from bell, but the link on sammobile (i9000ugjk3) seems to be expired and cannot be downloaded. So i'm trying to find alternative ways to see how to remedy this problem.
Thanks in advance.
I highly doubt that Bell will release a new update for the i9000m. You are better finding a newer rom (JVT or newer) and flashing that via Odin. Im using CM9 nightlies (but I feel it has too many bugs for daily use). If you can find a newer rom that is tweaked, you should notice better battery, faster, etc.
Just my $0.02
Hey I had similar issue - tried flashing new firmware w/odin & stuck with download only... I finally went to a Bell store to send it in, but they were able to use new firmware recovery software to re-flash stock gb2.3.3! I just said Kies messed-up the phone... Anyway, it will get you back to stock functionality. Good luck!

Since you can still get into download mode, you're OK.
You can download the UGKG3 ROM files from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1102881
Search for UGKG3.
The file is in 7Zip format. If you don't have something to unpack it, get IZArc.
Flash the 3 files and you should be up and running.

After you restore your phone to KG3 via Odin/Download mode per Black Rose's link earlier in this thread, you should be back where you started on KG3.
Then from KG3 ( 2.3.3),
I suggest:
1) Use SuperOneClick to root your phone (SuperOneClick can also UNroot your phone later if you want).
2) Use Galaxy_S Unlock by Helroz available on the G-store.
This worked well for me with no problems.
And just for reassurance, NEVER flash a ROM that is not explicitly for the i9000/i9000M to this device.

[Q] Trying to install custom ROM with SECURITY ERROR

I see there are a lot of articles saying how this should be done but at least in my case I haven't had luck with any of them.
After you read this you must realize I'm a noob on this.
I have ICS 4.0.4 Stock Firmware from TELCEL, Mexico and I'm having no luck getting the custom ROM installed or at least downgrade I think it will be better. The main problem with the phone is the battery life and it's slow, all after the phone upgraded to ICS.
I will do anything you guys suggest if you could please point me in the right direction.
A few things I've tried:
I've Rooted the phone using Unlock Root application suggested by one of the post I found here.
I've Installed ROM Manager and flashed the CWM Recovery Touch tool and followed the instructions to use a Zip, I was trying with the Zeuz Gingerbread ROM I downloaded from here but after the phone reboots all I get is "LG logo saying SECURITY ERROR"
Anyone has gone through this issue?
BTW: after the LG Security Error I have to get into S/W Upgrade and run the LG Mobile Support Tool to let it flash the stock firmware again.

The boot loader is locked. There are a number of tutorials on how to unlock it, but you need the original Froyo or Gingerbread ROM images from LG. Locating those seems to be the tough part. You downgrade to the earlier version, then you unlock.
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction
