Hello people,
I just purchased a Samsung Galaxy S, and the overall user experience is very sluggish.
Is there anything I can do to have a freaking fast and smooth UI just like an iPhone 4 would have ?
I ran a lagfix (OCLF) that almost doubled my Quadrant scoring, but that seems to be the benchmark part of things. The user interface is still damn slow and buggy.
Any help will be appreciated,
Cheers
Depends on how far you want to go. (Ie, are you willing to void your warranty? )
You can start by installing alternative UIs, like launcherpro, or ADW..
Install increasingly warranty-voiding lagfixes, (actually once you root your phone, i think the warranty is void)
Flash a different kernel (check out android dev subforum)
Flash a different rom w/ all the above (I'm using Doc's froyo rom, it's pretty awesome)

Hi there and thank you for taking the time to answer.
I don't really care voiding my warranty, all I want is a fast phone.
I just installed Launcher Pro, and entering/exiting apps is now much faster.
However, I still experience some lags from time to time. Its weird, I don't even know how to explain it, but the overall user experience is not as fast and smooth as it could be on an iPhone 4 or even on a Windows Phone 7.
So far, here is what I've done :
- Applied OCLF lag fix, which doubled my Quadrant benchmark score
- Installed Launcher Pro
Is there anything else I could do other than flashing a new ROM (Doc's Froyo ROM install procedure seems to be very time-consuming) ?
Cheers
Flash an optimised kernel? Preferably one that has lag fixes in it.. there are a bunch of them in the android dev forum. Remember to undo any existing lagfixes before flashing, or it might mess up..
Don't think doc's rom install thing is really time consuming.. though i guess it depends on how long your definition is took maybe 30 mins to do it, not including downloading time. (And most of that time was spent re-reading instructions to make sure I didn't mess up )
I use autokiller on aggressive.
Never use anything samsung made, like the widgets, the keyboard, the messaging app,the dialer.
I found vooodoo much quicker than oclf in real life but now im using darkies rom. Its ok, but i think stock fw with voodoo might have been faster.
Btw darkies rom is REALLY easy to flash, you might want to try that, just check the devs forum.

Welcome to sgs world.
Oclf is an old way to speed up the sgs.
The new way is to flash a custom kernel and apply lagfix. Basically you converting the filesystem.
You can also in some kernel apply different tweaks.

If you don't want to stuff around and have a phone that works out of the box sell it.
Does this lag applies to all phones ???
I have mine updated to froyo 2.2 and Installed tons of apps and games and widgets, I cant seem to notice any lag.

I'll be doing this in the very near future, but I want to fully test the device before I say it's crap

Two of my colleges have a Samsung Galaxy S, and I can confirm that laggy behavior on both of their devices.
Here is a video illustrating the problem :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cB1b0UrX9e0
If you make a couple of Google queries, you'll see that the world wide web is full of reviews, topics and videos regarding this problem.
I bet 5 Euro that you're running Android 2.1 in the device.

I'll pay it gladly ^^ I've been running 2.1 and I can understand why people would want to get rid of it ASAP.
Still waiting for official SGS Froyo update here in India before doing fixes.
Hi all,
I'm considiring to get a O2X because it looks like the best option out there. I did read a lot of reviews and it looks great but i want to know more about using it in real live. so i have some couple of questions to O2X owners.
1. would you recommend buying a O2X?
2. What are the disadvantages of it?
3. Does it get slow sometimes?
4. do you expect more android updates form LG?
5. what about rooting and custom roms?
i always liked HTC phones but nothing is really new, they have the same CPU same amoutn of RAM. Galaxy 2 is to expesive and looks like a iphone (not liking this). so i'm betwen buying a HTC Desire HD or a LG Optimus 2x.
tell me what your experiences are. thnx
---edit--
I forgot to ask, i have a N1 and i'm sick of getting notification that i'm low on memory, how much space does the O2X has to install apps on it? all the 8GB?
hi,
i also think about ordering one ...
you think there will be official cyanogen support ?
i´m using galaxy spica with cyanogenmod right now and got use to the features
thx for answers
I think you will have better luck getting answers when the phone is actually released The version the few people have now, is not the final version being released an a couple of weeks.

I'll give it a shot, even though I have a pre-sales sample, the rom is from Dec 14. I've used the phone since early January.
1. I would definitely recommend the phone, lightning fast, HDMI and all that makes a difference for sure (I've been bringing the phone around, so simple to connect and show pictures/videos/1080p movies! etc.
2. I'd say that it's a tad bit big but the screen makes it up. The Atrix has a bigger battery and I wouldn't mind that, even though the battery life definitely lasts longer than on my Nexus.
3. Never ever experienced any lags, I tested the phone against an iPhone 4 (cleared all history cache etc, removed the sims, wifi Only) and then ran the 10 top used websites (facebook, msn, google, myspace, youtube, blogger, wikipedia, live, etc..) the 2X loading time was quicker in every case and sometimes much quicker (facebook, myspace).
4. LG has confirmed that they'll release Gingerbread for the 2x, and there is update/OTA under settings, as well as LG Mobile Update from the PC.
5. SuperOneClick works, I've used Z4Root myself but it doesn't seem to work for all ROMs. You can count on custom ROMs, this will be the Mothership of all phones at the time of the release.
I had about 6.25 GB of free space when I got the phone. So the system does eat a bit of the 8GB cake.

Thnx Dave. It looks like a really good phone, just waiting for the phone to come out.

hi O2X crew. i'm considering buying this phone but upon reading a few forums this phone is pretty unreliable to start with. i've noticed there had been a major software update by LG. so does it mean now the phone people can buy from the stores are a lot better than before?
there has been no major update. you are better off with something thats not from lg.... i would recommend a nexus, maybe wait on the new one
the hardware (at least in most cases) is not the problem, the problem is the utterly bad software and support from lg.

no its not, though it fixes bugs present on initial release
I'd advice you to just forget o2x, and wait a while for the nexus release, you'll add a few bucks, and you'll get a rock solid phone + with awesome support, unlike the o2x(still has no official gb update)
OMG ppl...
Am I the only satisfied owner?
Dont know whats the fuzz about.
I got the 2x for 300 euros and am more than satisfied.
With Cyanogenmod its stable, super fast and good battery life.
Ok stock rom might not be the best rom out there but whatever device i would gotten, i would install cyanogenmod either way. So....
I recommend it if you are under a bit of a tight budget. If not go for SGSII
lorismarcos: when did u get your o2x?
so with the update, does the phone still reboot, freeze, bad battery life, etc etc etc?
i'm considering o2x cuz its the best phone right now for fido in which i can redeem my fido dollars on. i wish fido has a better lineup.
Repeat!! Do not buy LG phone...
Or you will join us to angry LG poor software service......
alrighty then
LG Optimus 2X!!!!! its a lost cause, just do your best to stay way from it or any other LG phone.
I concur with other people's opinions that the software part really needs improving from LGs end. However, as far as the hardware is concerned you get your bang for your buck. It plays well with other dual core phones so with a custom ROM you can really exploit the capabilities of the phone. Even on the stock ROM (Which I am using at the moment) the phone is running fine, no randon BSODs for me at the moment, and battery life pretty good, actually last a few more more than a day. So, I'd say it's a good phone but LG has reduced the quality of it by not releasing updated software for it.
when did u get yours Soul?
The problem with optimus 2x is in 3 parts
1st it was delivered with a really BAD software (random reboots etc)
2nd They promised gb update at may-june (whick never happened till today they postpone it all the time)
3rd they dont release their propriaty software so no stable aosp roms wet
2.2 IS stable now but if you try 2.3 youll see a speed and battery and api improvment. So eveyone wants 2.3
If lg had said "People I sell this phone but youll get 2.3 in a year noone would qq now.
If lg opened their sources unrooted people would qq now
As things are now all are qqing.
My advice is get this phone. The price / value is very high. That if you can live with 2.2 froyo which doesnt have any problems nowdays but still its not 2.3 gingerbread.
psI was one of the first people that got optimus 2x (snif 500€) and I had numerous of problems with 10b version but it was ok with 10a. after 10d with 725 baseband it was buggless

Nope, there are more of us
Never had any problems, really. And our phone is getting better and better, there is no doubt about it. Even if LG sucks - our developers did wonders out of beta leaks
Also beware of the BSOD problem, that hasn't been yet fixed, even in the leaked GB ROMs (it's probably a hardware issue). It occures every 3-4 days and the only way to unblock the phone is to take out the battery.
Do NOT buy this phone until you're sure LG sorted this bug out!
buy it, its a god phone i never had a problem and i gad it the day it come out
I have o2x for me and my wife.
My boss bought o2x 2 weeks before me (they stole it though).
My recommendations for you is better pick another phone.
Reasons:
My wife runs on stock rom 2.2.2
For facebook, phone, sms camera and some silly games is just fine with the stock rom and good phone for its money.
On the other hand my phone runs on custom rom (topogigis) because the battery, customization, stability isnt what i like on the phone and i want more than a few apps like my wife. Stock 2.2 was a nightmare for me. Reboots, bad reaction and generally not stable for my taste.
My boss had 5 times reinstall stock rom etc because he had issues with the phone. He said at last installation that the phone runned smoothly although BSOD was a daily bases (at least once a day).
Conclusion:
If u want a phone with stock roms and never care about anything else look for another phone. LG support sucks, just forget stock rom.
If u want a phone with good hardware and low money but u want to custom everything then buy one but get in mind that u might have to learn how to cook roms because many developers might quit developing on this phone and buy another phone, considering LG support.
Haters gonna hate
Wow, there are so many haters in this thread, lol
I love my 2x. It is the best phone I ever had.
I didn't have any problems with the original stock rom (except for the fact that it was a little sluggish). After the last LG update (10d), everything is nice and smooth.
I am on a gingerbread leak (topogigi) because I am a nerd, but I found the 10d fast and stable.
Also, lol at having to learn how to cook roms to use the phone. I think developer support for our phone is awesome and nothing makes me think that it's going to be changing any time soon.
Hi, new to android. new to p990 (*just brought one)

i talked to a professional today about the X2
he said dont ROOT it because of some voltage glitches with will damage the cpu eventually, also. not to install android 4.0 until it comes out from LG for my country.
I thought hmm well . I will find the community and talk to them
WHAT SAY YOU P990 USERS.
anyone had problems once rooted?
anyone had problems installing 4.0 (is it faster and i hear 30% more batt life?)
any glitches. whos bricked there fone?

No problems here
Only thing with ICS ROMs (cm9) is there is NO HW acceleration yet... Means you can't video record with stock camera. Use a app called Camera Illuision. And for playing videos use MX Player.
Battery life, hm.. The same really. Try to match RIL and BB (use GetRIL from Google Play), try differents kernels..
Hi!
There are no disadvantages by rooting your phone I believe, at least I haven't encountered any...
As far as I know, there are also no voltage glitches on our phone which can harm the CPU. Tegra 2 is actually quite good, only their support sucks...
But, you need to know that once you want to undervolt your CPU, you can only undervolt to the minimum of 770 mV. The Tegra CPU, won't go any lower than that. I mean, you can UV lower, but it won't have any effect... , so 770 mV is the minimum.
Also, if I were you, I wouldn't wait for the official LG release of ICS, because that might take months before it is eventually released, just like Gingerbread. LG and NVIDIA are to blame for this. They are responsible for the delayed release date, because of their poor support.
k. so from what i gather. just root it. stay on 2.3.4?
i dont what to substute " acess to camera facilities and playback facilities" with other apps etc. (work arounds_) i know where this leads.. lol. its HELL!
so having stock P990 rooted is pretty much sufice to do all the major "should i say" hax.. modern... 4.0 is still bad?

Easiest way to test, install Titanium Backup, which you will need to backup your apps anyway for when you start flashing custom ROM's
One very good reason to flash a custom ROM, I think you only get gtalk with video on android 2.3.7, so that for me is a very good reason not to stay on stock, apart from the better performance, smoothness, battery life, etc!
im on 2.3.4 just got the fone. dont care about whats on it. wont bother backing up.
unless i need to backup the firmware right?
ill get superuser. thanks
If you've really just got the phone then I wouldn't recommend doing any warranty voiding activities.
If you search around this forum you will find a testimonial from an user that got a faulty equipment, sent the phone once for repair, checked the IMEI and it was still the same phone, se he sent the phone again and the second time around he got a different phone (different IMEI) and the phone was perfect.
So why not taking the time to make sure everything is working properly? (GPS, Wi-Fi, radio, etc...)
Titanium Backup is still a good app to check if you have root though, even if you don't want to backup anything.
Or get the app ROM Manager, to install CMW (ClockWorkRecovery), for flashing customs ROMs..

oh i get you now. makes sense. not signed drivers. so the other dependant software/hardware wont operate its like um. that on motorola codegroups also. some of them had the no cert codegroups mixed and the flex/flash/seem edits you had issues with some russian firmwares that had the codegroups of other fw's that had NO RSA. so you couldnt use certain drms and installs (native intergrated mods) and (additional mods like itunes etc) into the fone because of RSA.
so it was up to the communities to find RSA removed codegroups and compile fw's from them.
is it similar to this?

It happens that my LG L7 is too slow, since it has little RAM.I thought of doing root on my phone, but i know little about how doing it and i am not certain if it would be a good idea,or if should just buy another phone.
What i ask you is to give me some answer, showing arguments since what happens to you do not necessarily will happen with me.If it worths doing root, then i would like to know which ROM you used also.
As a long time user of this phone, all I can say is better buy a new phone.
this phone is way outdated and can't do anything to speed it up even if you root and use custom ROMs.
But you can use this as spare phone for playing or flashing custom ROMs for fun or education as well.

I just wanted to ask you if you have ever tried custom ROMs like Xoptimus, cyanogemod or the european version.Because you can see some youtube videos of them showing high performances in l7.
I haven't tried that xoptimos, idk what is that.
I've tried most of custom ROMs here on xda. And for me the best ROM was vanir 4.1.2 and unfortunately no one was able to have a copy of it.
Right now I'm using cardoso cm10, my daily driver.
Like I've said, you can op for a new phone as your main phone. And make your l7 as your experimental phone for flashing custom roms. By that you can test a lot of custom ROMs. And only you can say which phone is really cool and good ROM.

my 5 cents...
Probably not worth it.. unless you have the time on your hands to play with it....
Base on my experience.. I had a hard time to find the right software ( stable and working) for this phone LG L7 p705.... in technical world.. this phone is a grandpa now....
You might gain some speed back and slightly better performance out of this "grandpa" phone by factory resets/ cleaning caches and partition..reinstalling ROMS.. BUT.. I have spent a lot of time searching and trying.. almost bricked this phone in those procedures... MY Lg L7 p705 is now working slightly faster...BUT.. my 5cents>>> buy a newer phone!.. cheers...
Maybe, some experienced "phone flashers" and developers might help you here...or youtube and a lot of google search might work for you as it did, to some extend, for me....
get a new phone...
My last hope for legacy devices was when real ART support never manifested into a useable ROM. CM11 runs great in ART mode, but there's virtually no development for it or even Xposed compatibility. But that would be my suggestion: Find a CM11 ROM that will run in ART mode, but don't expect much customization.
Update: On a positive note, I left my S3 out in the rain and am using my L5 while it dries out. I don't mind using it at all and performs better than would be expected given the absurd amount of time I've spent setting up the old Carbon CM11. It has better phone/talk quality than Samsung by far, and can have a clear conversation while driving with the window down. But can't fix the kernel wakelocks preventing deep sleep. I don't know why I admire this cheap L5 better than my clunky S3, I just do.
More positives: With custom kernel you can overclock several hundred mhz, run memory tweaks to gain nearly 1gig with zram compression, then if you use that up have another 1.5 gigs of virtual memory. Then, up the read ahead on your data partition. I only notice minor lag on my single core system compared to faster dual cores with 4x physical ram.
