So I made the stupid move of trying to install the verizon tab bootstrapper onto my wifi only tab... dont ask why I genuinely wasnt thinking. But i tried to reboot into recovery and now im bootlooping... I can access download mode, but neither heimdall nor odin will connect to it? any idea how to get her back up and running?? TIA
Odin breaks in the presence of heimdal. Uninstall heimdell drivers and Reinstall the driver by reinstalling kies or if you have the package reinstall it. Go to download mode and flash the ofw
I did something similar, Got back to being able to go into bootloader but I could not get the correct firmware. Any of the packages on this site and samfirmwares would not complete the setup process once I flashed via odin. The tab woul;d get to the language screen and force close, reboot, and repeat. I just exchanges it at Frys for a new one. Would have gotten money back but that was not an option. Now back to Standard Froyo and may keep, not decided yet. Th eprevious comment suggested loading the original firmware, does anyone have that for the US Wifi model?
When I used the standard Froyo with P1010 (US WiFi Version), it froze many times and I realized that Samsung already put a lot of pre-loaded APK files in the system app folder. Even I cleared the L1 and L2 caches, it showed 370 MB used out of 478 MB.
So, i rooted it and moved some unused APK files to my sdcard. (i just wanted to keep the original APK files to restore just in case.) Now it shows 220 MB used out of 478 MB.
Since it is not recycling the RAM often like before, i feel that it is much faster.
ex) i removed Media Hub, Dual Clock Widget, Live Background, WSJ and so on.....
* You have to be careful!!! You gonna have same problems if you delete the system core apk files.

Thank you starchun, this is exactly what I want to do. I'm not having the same RAM usage or freeze problems that you are having, but I'm really annoyed with all the crap that Samsung has on the box. As you say, a careful pruning of some of the pre-installed apk files is in order. I've almost got the courage now to take the plunge and do my first root.
I returned it and bought it again. i really like the form factor. 7 inch...
Since I installed the Go-Launcher and some programs that I've used every days, it went up to 370MB & it froze often.
Here's the APK files that i deleted for your reference. (No Issues Yet)
Do not delete these completely. Just save it somewhere in your SD. You can restore if you want it later.
Again, you gotta be careful when you delete other APK files.
ClockAndWatherWidget.apk
ClockDateWeatherWidget.apk
DigitalFrame.apk
DualClock.apk
Email.apk (Stock Email software... i don't use it. i just login to web based hotmail which is much better)
ft-galaxytab-1.6.4f.apk (Financial Times)
GenieWidget.apk
Kindle-OEM-2.0.....
LiveWallPapers.apk
LiveWallpapersPicker.apk
MagicSmoteWallpapers.apk
MediaHub.apk (Media Hub)
Moviefone....apk
MusicODC.apk.... (Music Hub)
MusicPlayer.apk (stock music player, i am using other one.)
NyTimes-Tablet.... (New York Times)
qik.apk (QIK)
SamsungApps.apk
SamsungWidget_CalendarClock.apk
SamsungWidget_FeedAndUpdate.apk
SamsungWidget_ProgramMonitor.apk
SamsungWidget_StockClock.apk
Street.apk (Google Street, do you really need it on Wi-Fi?)
Swype.apk (i don't use it)
Talk.apk (Google Talk, i don't use it but i will re-install later if i need it)
UnifiedInbox.apk (Social Hub)
VoiceSearch.apk (Voice Search)
WorldClock.apk
WSJ......apk (Wall Street Journal)
I rooted yesterday and I'm deleting bloatware today. Thanks for the list of apks.

Hopefully this is an OK place to ask this.
I have a Nexus running Cyanogen, and of course to get some of the google apps (I would assume carhome, alarm clock etc.) I needed to install the google apps pack. Now my wife has a UK Milestone and of course it is still on 2.0.1, could I install the zip pack in recovery and get the nexus alarm and car home on her phone? I know the apps do not have a problem. Alternatively I could back up my apps and the push them to the system/app folder, correct? How do I then install them (I tried to install of the sd card but no dice).
Thanks for any help still trying to understand the ins and outs of what can be done and how it is done.
update to 2.1
why don't you just update your milestone to 2.1
http://androinica.com/2010/04/21/te...-++A+Google+Android+Blog)&utm_content=Brizzly
My understanding is that there are some differences between the Telus vs European milestone. The only way I have found so far is to do some trickery and apply a saved nandroid backup from a country that has received 2.1. I was getting ready to do this last night, but stopped when I realized I could get the OTA pretty soon. HOWEVER I still do not think it would include carhome (because it is not US) or the alarm (uses motorola alarm).
I will say that rooting is not the same on the milestone. Nobody has been able to unlock the bootloader so no custom roms .

if your wife doesnt have a recovery image that allows you to bypass the sig check or allows packages signed with test keys then no, you cant just flash through recovery. You might be able to get away with pushing the apk's from the sdcard to /data/app. But no garuntees. just move the apk's to a sd card and insert it into your wifes phone. open up terminal emulator and type
Code:
cp /sdcard/[FileName].apk /data/app/
PS if you dont have root on your wifes phone, you cant change anything on /system.
Thanks will try that. I can just use the APK I backed up to my SD card with Appmanager pro correct?
Let's make a list of which apk's we can remove without the phone giving forcing close issues....
Code:
AnalogueAlarmWidget.apk
AnalogueClockWidget.apk
AppAdvisor_v1.5.78_production_signed_aligned.apk
CarHome.apk
com_lge_christmassnowcity.apk
com_lge_lgfirework2.apk
cyon.apk
DigitalAlarmWidget.apk
DigitalClockWidget.apk
EmailWidget.apk
F-Secure_Mobile_Security_Android22.apk
LGEmail.apk
LGLauncher.apk
MessageWidget.apk
PreloadedApp.apk
SNS.apk
Stk.apk
WorldClockWidget.apk

Added to the list. More welcome.
What is cyon.apk?
And why is it "safe" to fremover the og launcher? At least you should put your launcher of choice in system/app first....

What if you just remove the above apps without backup of them.
Do you brick the phone if hard reset is done ?

Okay so when we remove the apk program files we don°t actually remove the programs from the Rom ??

Nothing will happen, you just will miss apps.
When you hard reset your phone it wiil just delete user data and cache partition.
Any changes to system folder means you make changes to rom and cannot be undone without reflashing or restore backup.
Be careful with deleting of apps! If something goes wrong and the phone is not booting we don't have any global rom and flashing tool for now.

Just freez them with Titanium backup if you want the free mem.... space wise deleting them is not really nessecary.... or pull them out with adb first.
Some Insight
Let's work top down guys, no panic, no alarm.
There are "system apps" and there are "system apps"
Most people refer to any app that's installed on the system partition as a "system app" but the real definition of a "system app" is one that is signed with a root or platform key. This key allows the app to interact with the OS at the lowest level, manipulating resources and other apps.
It's safe to remove either
You can remove either types of these apps but some may be dependencies for other apps and removing these can cause Force Closes.
A Factory Reset does not touch the system partition
As stated above, any modifications you make to the system partition (/system/*) will withstand a Factory Reset. This is why root still works after a Factory Reset.
Safe-to-remove apps
I personally provided the list above and can confirm that these apps are safe to remove but you need to be aware:
Some apps are required (like a Launcher), if you remove it, make sure you have an alternative installed.
Some apps are not available on the Market, you may not be able to substitute them.
Make a backup before you delete any apps!
Note: For critical apps, like a Launcher you *must* have one on your system partition! Do *not* remove your only Launcher from the system partition!
Additional Apps
A lot more can be safely removed from the system partition but they do not consume real-time resources and therefore there is no substantial benefit in removing them. I will post a full schedule of these apps later if somebody doesn't beat me to it.
Enjoy.
More safe to remove: All widgets (loads of them), livewallpaper, protips, maps, lg memo
instead of making backup of the APK files with ADB... can't i just use root explorer to copy the APK files to a folder on my internal sd or computer ??

Yes, you can. But I would recommend backing up to pc for redundancy.

Errug bedankt ! Nice overview.
Since space isn't an issue just freezing them with Titanium Backup should free up the memory as well right?
I'll be waiting for a conclusive list of "freezable" apps. ( And patiently await a custom booloader so we can get some really good custom roms.)
@Xmoo
Haven't see inside the ROM but I assume googlefeedback.apk is in there.
Wouldn't hurt killing that to.
I wish I've red this thread before tinkering around witgh my phone. Seem to have kinda bricked it after owning it for 3 days.
I was playing around with it trying to get rid of the facebook, twitter & myspace for LG apps but I couldn't figure out what they were called in the Titanium Backup Pro list så i backed up LG Home (or was it just called LG) and naively thought the worst thing that could happen was that I would have to do a hard factory reset if anyting went wrong.
But as the android n00b that I am (first android phone) I should have known that LG Home is the launcher! So know I have a phone I can check emails on but if I go past the startup guide it crasches and im stuck at the startup LG logo until I do another hard factoryreset.
Anyone know if the default image/ROM is soon to be released or should I take a shot and send my phone in for repair hoping that they never pick up on what I did?
Sorry of this is offtopic.
There are a couple of threads with similar problems, so search a bit and you should find a way to fix it

Have someone send you the lg home apk via email and install, or perhaps another launcher if you want. You'll get the "Install ?" question when you open the mail.. do so and you have a launcher again.

Check this thread out:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=992945
When I check out my Active Services I can see the following programs: Whatsapp services (2), Twitter (1), Sim-toolkit (1), Google Services Framework (2), Media (without anything beneath it), Music (2), com.lge.omadmclient (1), Bluetooth Share (2) weird cause bluetooth is OFF! , Wheather & clock update (1), On-Screen phone (1), DRM Service (1), Maps (1), LG PC Suite ObexManager (1), and the Gingerbread Keyboard (1).
Big list in comparison to my G1 and I guess there can be SOME things deleted. Altough I don't know which ones. A guess:
1. Media (what does this do?)
2. Music (I disabled the music bar, and don't want that service running all the time!)
3. com.lge.omadmclient (what's this?)
4. Bluetooth Share... weird thing because I have my bluetooth OFF all the time... how to get rid of these?
5. Wheather & clock updater. I don't use that widget so...?
6. On-Screen phone, what does it do?
7. DRM Service
8. LG PC Suite ObexManager?
Can somebody please tell me if I can get rid of (some) of these services, and if so, which programs to freeze Thanks!
After TRYING all kinds of suggestions, none of which work, I found one that says:
- copy all google talk service and google talk app to system/app folder
- Grant all possible privilages to them
- Restart the phone.
In what folder is google talk service and google talk app located?
How do you grant them "all privledges'?
Seems to me the last time I attempted to CUT AND PASTE a file to the system/app folder, it wouldn't let me.
This message has come up EVEN AFTER I have installed numerous ROMs.
I appreciate any help!
Did you flash stock in between flashes?. To move a file rlto system/app use adb or super manager
If I have helped press thanks.
Clean install of ROMs
Every time I flash, I go back to stock and do a Master Clear, so my flashes are clean. I use Titanium BU Pro to reinstall apps, BUT do NOT restore system data, just app data.
I'm thinking that the problem MIGHT be related to the syncing of my calendar with the google calendar I have online. Triied doing the data clear, etc....
Like I said, I've tried everything except what I posted in my first post. Problem is, I don't know where the files are located so that I can transfer them to the system folder. This seems like the only other "solution" I haven't tried at this point.
Hate to do it, but I'm thinking about going back to stock 2.2 and see if that makes a difference.
Okay. I don't have a lot of knowledge on developing/tinkering on Android, but I think I've figured out how to integrate apps into the ROM (updates of system apps and/or downloaded apps). I used:
A stock cricKet 2.2.1 ROM, rooted (of course) w/Universal Androot
Root Explorer, and
ROM Manager (more on this later)
First thing is first, I did a TI backup; don't want to lose anything
I then opened Root Explorer
Mounted R/W, and
did a search for .apk.
Notice that the only directories the actual .apk files for INSTALLED apps should appear in (outside the SD card) are:
/cache
/data/app
/data/app-private (possibly)
/data/FLEX/app
/system/app
Ignore the following:
/cache
/data/FLEX/app
Now, you may already know this, but the system apps you're looking for are located in the /system/app directory, and downloaded apps (for the updated system apps) are located the /data/app directories that aren't being currently ignored (if you're following my instructions). Based on icon, filename, and common sense, I found which .apk files were the updates of already existing system apps (IE Market, Google Maps, Voice Search, etc.) in the /data/app directory, and the corresponding system app they updated in the /system/app directory. I then:
Copied the filename of the system app I was going to replace (rename copy all)
Moved over to the /data/app directory
Located the corresponding updated app
Renamed it what its corresponding system app was renamed (rename, delete existing name, paste)
Hit the 'move' option
Navigated to the /system/app directory
Deleted original system app (you may want to backup this file beforehand)
Pasted the updated system app
Within 30 seconds or so, you should get a (blah.blah.blah has unexpectedly shut down force close/report) popup. Just hit force close and you should be fine (Google Maps seemed to be a recurring FC). If you try to open the app before rebooting, it will force close on you. When you're finished, open ROM Manager. I know you're thinking 'This app is no good on the ZIO'; so stop. Hit 'Fix Permissions'. The reason for this is that it fixes a few rare force close issues. I don't know the mechanics of it, but it works, so I don't question it. Listen to the notification you'll see and reboot your phone after it finishes fixing the permissions. Now go into settings and manage applications, and you'll see that you can no longer uninstall whatever apps you moved to the /system/app directory.
FYI Renaming .apk files doesn't seem to make a bit of difference either way.
(Forgive my horrible perspective descriptions: I/you)
I haven't tested it yet, but I believe unrooting the device should make any apps moved to the /system/app directory that require root access would become non-functional (right?). The reason this thread is a question is that I'm wondering if i did this correctly, and if so, I want to find out if unrooting and factory resetting my phone would somehow delete the apps in the /system/app directory that weren't included in the stock ROM. (I'm not really willing to do that yet; I still have to download the SDK to my new computer so I can do a NANDROID backup.) Any help answering these from a more experienced developer would be great.
If you want to incorporate apps into a rom, the apps have to be free or you must get consent from the developer to include in your rom

Only if it is a Public rom. Even free app developers should be credited in a public rom

I'm operating under the assumption that you're using Google developed updates of system apps. I suppose I should have said something to that extent up top.
[UPDATE]
Okay, so I did a NAND and then factory reset my phone. Killed everything not in the /system/app directory. I'm sure you knew that would happen, but I guess I'm posting for the noobs. Easier to find, I guess.
Hi,
I've tried to integrate some apps using Titanium Backup but it stuch at 0% for more than 5mins so I cancelled the process. Is it normal that it was that slow? Does Titanium generate odex files too?
I've tried integrating updates for GoogleMaps, StreetView and Youtube using a recovery mode and ADB on my linux machine.
After the backup system data I've deleted original apk and odex files from /system/app/ and moved newer versions from /data/app/ to /system/app/.
I renamed the files from com.google.android.blah.blah.apk to old names (ie. Maps.apk, etc). I haven't generated the odex files.
Rebooted the phone (HTC Desire, 2.2, Orange UK) and these apps were not available. I couldn't run either GoogleMaps or Youtube. They weren't on the "All apps" list, but still were in the system app manager/uninstaller, but couldn't uninstall them as they were in system obviously.
Tried to clear Dalvik cache but no difference.
Then I've copied them with my user backed apk files (it went to /data/app and installed the newest versions) and all is fine - could launch them as usual.
Now using "adb push" method I copied my old system versions of these apps in the /system/app/ and all if fine. I could updated them to newer versions, but this obviously went to /data/app/, so didn't free the phone memory.
Any idea why integrated apps were not visible in the system?
Perhaps I shall just delete the old system apps and copy the ones from /data/app/ without renaming...
Much appreciate it.
Greg
edit:
All went fine now. Just deleted old files in the /system/app and moved newer version without renaming to from /data/app

I have a Galaxy Tablet with rooted VZW 2.3.5. I have installed certain .apk's (Google Finance for example) in the /system/app folder with no problem. Other files, such as Opera Mobile, will display an icon but will force close if I open the file. If I install Opera normally. then it will work until the device reboots. I would like to add Opera as a system app in case a factory reset is required. Am I missing a step?
http://www.opera.com/mobile/download/versions/
see here the lastes official opera mobile release.
of course you can copy the app to /system/app if the app doesn´t work.
Thank you for replying. I have a copy of the .apk for Opera and I put it into the correct directory. It is also in the app list afterwards. The problem is that it acts like it is going to open, then it immediately force closes. I have several apps installed this way and those apps work properly.
