[Q] Thunderbolt Skin - .apk and .zip files - Android Themes

Hi all -
Newbie to the forum here - as well, newbie to the Thunderbolt!
I have a question regarding downloading new skins for the TB. First off, is there a good location to find a variety of skins?
Secondly, the ones I have found are usually downloaded in a .zip format and I am unable to convert them to an .apk format. I have tried renaming them, but this doesn't work for me.
Can someone tell me how to locate ones with the extension .apk and/or how to use the ones that are in .zip format?
Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks much,
Sean

You need to be rooted. And then you flash em. You can't just theme like that. The best without root is using launcher pro

I have downloaded a few on here without rooting your phone idk what that guy is talking about. just get astro file manager and use it to install the apk file manager. its hard to search the forums on this place cuz theres so many ppl using all these roms and all this crazy crap i havent figured out yet. i dont wanna screw with my phone. i just want it to look cool with some .apk skins. theres a thread on here somewhere in the HTC desire section that someone posted a bunch of skins that work for the thunderbolt that i downloaded.\

[?] Someone point me into the theming direction

First off, I know there was a thread on this that was located somewhere in the HTC Dream/G1 section, but I can't seem to find that thread ever since the big change xda went through...
Anyways, I've been trying to learn how to theme, I'm a beginner, and I wanna do this for education purposes. Can someone point me in the right direction to began with? (like a guide or what-not)
Currently I have the SDK starter kit from Google/developer.android.com. Are there any other guides, or anyone here willing to teach?
im a beginner too but to make a theme is not so difficult.. you must have only patience and a good know of photoshop (or the gimp if you use linux)..
then, just take an apk only for an example.. mm.. Launcher.apk!! rename it to Launcher.apk.zip and u will see several directory, one of this is res..
extract to desktop and you will see all the launcher images..
the only thing you have to do is replace them with your own images (same dimension and format, png..)
once you done that.. reopen Launcher.apk.zip and replace this your new images with the old one and finally rename again to Launcher.apk
do this with every apks and framework-res.apk too cos here there are a lot of images of android like the battery icon or smileys (the one of the sms's) and much more, also the top bar..)
then, if u use metamorph just follow this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=591329
or if you want use the update.zip you must first read this
how to sign .zip: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=473580
if u use metamorph u must only copy the file u want to replace..
else if u want the update.zip u must copy every file into apks, then sign..
if into the zip file you want to add both app and framework and font too.. you must add a directory called " com ".. u can find this directory in any theme you download, its in the " meta-inf" directory
ok??? its not so difficult trust in me..
i found this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=467639 ..
...wrote in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=468254
maybe it can help you more..
Thank's that's exactly what I'm looking for, I owe you big time
but what about the notification bar?
u can find notification bar into framework-res.apk under the drawable and drawable-land folders..
the name of images are staus_background.png then bottombar.png and maybe another one.. anyway, thanks to cloverdale you must read this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=606011
and download Black_Lite-v3.0.1 Full Theme.
here u can find the black notification bar (and many other thing..)
its a metamorph theme
I haven't tested it yet but it should work. make a nandroid backup before u apply this changes
alright, thanks for all the help, man
wow, great reply! so much for being a "beginner." i've been rooted and constantly looking around for new ways to mod my g1, and i still had NO clue how to theme or use metamorph. thanks!

im a beginner but i learn quickly.. i was in your same point some weeks ago..
if u want learn something about theming or else just follow the link i wrote before. i used them to improve my knowledge about themes..
if u still have trouble, download:
1. any themes u want
2. a theme that use metamorph (like Black_Lite-v3.0.1 Full Theme for example)
u will see the difference
to use metamorph is simply.. download it from the market and then copy the zip file or directory u want into the AndroidThemes folder on ur sdcard (u will see this folder after u install metamorph)..
next step will be open metamorph and select the one .thm file.. done
the only thing u hav to remember is make a nandroid backup cos if u dont like the new themes u can simply go back (without flash the rom again..)
all u hav to do guys is read more and do more practice

Is it really that hard to extract a theme from a Rom?

Hi!
I have been trying to extract the theme from this ROM
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=869408
It looks awesome and I want to add some animations from a different ROM and use it with Darkys or Assonance for example but this seems to be much harder than I though unless someone has a quick and easy for dummies procedure for poor me that is.
It should be as easy as extracting the framework-res.apk, twframework-res.apk, mms.apk, bootanimation.zip and fonts as that is what is listed as being themed in the ROM thread. Then use the theme porter posted in the Android Themes section of XDA to inject them in your apk's, then manually change whatever didn't copy over.

mmm sounds simple when you say it lol I will need to dig deep here it seems but that is a good post to point me towards the right path
I usually just extract the framework-res.apk and twframework-res.apk from the ROM I am taking the theme from and the ROM I want to put it in, then I copy the res/drawable-hdpi folder from the old apk into the new one. It is a quick/dirty method, and wont let you change font colors or add a circle battery mod to one without it, but I have never had problems with it before.
You also have to be sure it is compatible with the rom you are using. Some roms have different xml code behind and if you simply put the framework and tw framework in your rom you risk getting fc at boot and not getting past them.

Both are JPY Roms so I hope that is enough. I guess worst thing that could happen is having to flash again

Try first with /system/framework/framework-res.apk and /system/framework/twframework-res.apk
I'm attaching a cwm zip file that has those files as found in Doc's 6.1 rom.
Just replace them with the files from whatever rom you want and keep that as a backup in case something goes wrong. It will save you from reflashing
If both are JPY roms then it shouldn't be an issue.
I tried doing what Ryukeima mentioned but I ended up with a Frankenstein of a theme as not all things from the them I wanted came over to the new one!
This is going to require some practice. That ROM has also some very nice Icons for Launcher Pro so is going to be another thing to look for..in fact I think I could be happy just getting those Icons.

Rip all the framework folder. Make a CWM zip and flash it over your ROM. It should work without problems. Then try to either apply animations on UOT kitchen or inject them with metamorph.

Sorry for my noobness...Just trying to learn this stuff
So if i rip out all framework folders from one rom and manually replace them in another rom (like i did for kernel..replacing zimage file)...will it work?
Also, can anyone tell me how to make a CWM zip...i know there is a post for that on XDA but i am not able to find it...

To answer the first question, it won't straight out work. You have to add the images to the file 'framework-res.apk' in the 'drawable-hdpi' folder located within it. Different framework-res.apk's will differ from ROM to ROM, and will just FC or bootloop your phone if you use one that it doesn't like. That's why most themes have the ROM they will work with posted in the title. If it is the same base ROM (in the case of my phone, running Assonance, any JK3 theme will work), then it is as simple as drag & drop. But if it's between say Axura and Assonance, it would have to be manually changed as stated above, since there may be subtle differences in the framework.
As for the second question, here ya go

If the theme was made for JPY and the Rom you want to put it on is JPY, it should work. However, there are sometimes system apps which need to be installed with the theme. Easyest thing would be to rip it off, put it on your rom and see if it works. Experiment a bit, thats how you'll learn.
thanks and thanks.
Its really interesting to have a full control of your phone....so i am enjoying learning this stuff....tried using UOT kitchen but got errors...
I just want to modify notification bar...
I am on darky's 7.7...i will have to look for compatible theme

There's plenty of jpy based themes in the i9000>theme section.
You could metamorph it if it doesn't require any xml edits... it looks like Marilyn img edits which could be taken foment that rom..

i have a question along these same lines. if one wanted to copy the notification pulldown from a different ROM|theme, how would you do so? im using Perception 9.5 which is built on JK3, but the Androdena theme is built on JPX files. all i want is the notification pulldown elements. can you just copy those image files over and go? i always see themers talking about 9.pngs and i was just wondering if they'd prohibit just a simple copy from one tw-framework to another.

[Q] Converting a theme

Hi there,
till today, i used a DHD rom from rafpigna with revolution theme. Now, i flashed imilka RAM incredible (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=963521) with new sense version nad i am wondering now, if i can get the revolution theme here as well. I allready found it in the incredible section http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=736487
but now, i dont know, how to convert it. I allready recognized, that the files in theme-zip-file are placed in a wrong folger hierarchy, but when i tried to use the same hierarchy as my actual rom (sd-ext) and pack it as zip (winrar), it wont install. Is it that simple just to change the hierarchy or do i need something else? How may i repack it to an installable zipfile after?
Thanks a lot,
cmoe

I haven't tried editing sense themes since.. FOREVER ago, since things like the htc hero / sapphire / dream "were in"
What I did back then was open up the rom file you download, and in it you'll see a bunch of stuff and go into system\app\ and modify to your liking!
I just took a quick look at a sense rom and it appears that "rosie.apk" is still there. IF things haven't changed as much.. that Should be your main launcher.
So what youcould do is open that via winrar and extract images and stuff out.. then edit it!
Other things like the status bar, should be in framework-res.apk (which should be in framework instead of /apps/)
I've only modded my themes using roms from aosp or vanilla so I don't nkow sense too well.. However this should give you a basic understanding! and the more you wanna edit, the more .apk files you wanna open! good luck
On a similar note, I am trying to modify android with customised sounds (lock/unlock/key press etc) and having some issues.
I have directly tried to place the .ogg files into the following path within android itself using droid explorer but that didnt seem to work.
The path i have been placing it is within the following:
...\system\media\audio\ui
Has anyone managed to successfully do this either with a working rom or pre flashing, in which case could give me some pointers on how to do this?
Thanks
am using go desktop...

[Q] How to install APK files as a theme?

Hi guys,
So a YouTuber uploaded a video today about an Iron Man theme and being able to use it. It was a .zip file so I just thought it would be fairly simple to unzip and apply or to even flash somehow but when I unzipped it was a bunch of .apk files as wallpapers and as icon themes it looks like? Really stumped on how to use this and seems like such a simple question ??? anyways here is the YouTube link with download in the description, check it out and see if u can figure it out cause I can't... https://youtu.be/Hbun6bnMjk8
Thanks in advance
