Poor Galaxy S: How Many Times Have You Flashed Your Device? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Oh, poor Samsung Galaxy S, So much times flashed,
Make an estimation how many times you flashed it, Stock, Custom, Stock, Custom, Stock, Custom... OMG
My Answer is about 50-60 times, 3 weeks with my device.

does this include flashing updates ?? if so mine must be over 100 lol
i must admit, since i turned to CM7 and MIUI i dont flash at all now, im very happy.
before this i was flashing new roms daily.... good old days

I flashed my phone from stock 2.1 to KIES 2.2. Then odin JS3,JS7 and finally JVK. I'm not counting custom kernels, but basically each 2.2 version was flashed with speedmod.
I'm even lazy to upgrade to latest ginger

Probably over 50 time including odin and cwm flashing darkys rom, simply honey now tweaky rom which is fantastic
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App

Lost count now! I've had mine 3 weeks now (came from a ZTE Blade). After the initial confusion and tendancy to not want to touch ODIN, the flashing has gone ballistic. Started to go through the ginger roms now... Fun times!

My average time with rom is around week but from last month it's CM7 to Darky or Darky to CM7, I can't decide which one will be the best for me. And I'm thinking myself it would be nice if Darky had that all option like CM7 and CM7 was stable like Darky

I'd guess around 50-100 times (including failed flashes, custom roms etc)

I have had mine since September and I would estimate easily a couple hundred times.
I hope the flash memory can take it!
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA Premium App

Lol around 30times for me I think. Did darkys but reverted to stock rom cus he updated it **** everyday lol. Used a xustom kernel with stock 2.2.1 jpy and been happy with it. Fast slick
Now....SGS II >
Yes poor sgs. In my drawer gathering dust.
Swyped from my GT-I9100 using XDA App

Poor Galaxy S or lucky Galaxy S? I rather think my phone is really stretching it's legs now under Darky's v10 RC6. I voted under 50, but I must be approaching that number. I've been flashing Darky's roms since the Legendary Steel Edition.

Wow, I think I would be lucky to have flashed my phone a dozen times. This includes and update through Kies, playing around with kernels and flashing back to stock and reflashing after making a brick.
I think once I found something fast and stable I thought I may aswell stick with it until gingerbread comes out of beta. Now I'm just waiting.

i have never flashed until now
i m a bit scared

Depends on what you mean by flashing. If you mean flashing a complete rom. About 10-15 times. If you include updates like theme and kernel. More than 50 I think.

I did like 4 flashes and around 10 updates

i just downloaded the stock JVH rom will flash tomorrow

i try to keep the flashing to a minimum, i flashed it about 10 times since i got it in december, but i just found out there´s a new miui build, so i might flash the 11th time today

It is fair to say that we all are addicted to FLASHING?
Maybe we should leave computers and manage with photos

I have really lost count of how many times I have flashed my Galaxy S since I had it in November 2010...First custom was Darkyy's now I am on Tweaky Rom JVH, which is really nice

Is it worth updating from 2.2.1

Hi,I have a never odin updated phone aand am trying to decided if it is worth updating to 2.3.3. Currently my bluetooth works with in car but can't control it from the cars remote and I guess that I am hoping that 2.3.3 will fix it. Or am I better to flash to a newer 2.2.1 firmware?

Many people may say yes....But to tell u the truth....I ve tried many from stock....to customised roms for foryo, GB....etc....What i ve found out that stock roms are less problematic with zero errors etc....but in custom roms u may get into one or other problem due to heavy optimisations to code....
Between GB & froyo there is no difference in feel & any big new feature. All features are hidden i.e for developers only (at least in JVK build for Galaxy S). U may think afterwards that what was all that fuss about GB when the end user cannot make out any big difference. Since all the Key fetures like SIP, NFC & TW4 are not for Galaxy S at the moment....due to hardware or sammy don't want to do it coz of Galaxy S2.
no in my opinion
At least for the current beta GB relaase XXJVK i think it's not worth to upgrade from a froyo-2.2.1
I am waiting until roms are produced based on the official release of gingerbread. For now 2.2.1 suits me just fine.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA Premium App
have to admit just done it and all i can say is wow!
i was using 2.2.1 with speedmod and the colour and sharpness is great. however now that im using 2.3.3 jvk the screen just looks different! well, i switched over just for the tv off animation which all my iphone frens find it so cool!
i think it worth it. i had 2.2.1 costumed rom and he was realy nice. but this one, the JVK stock rom is the fastest, smoothest rom i had.
and dont be affraid of ODIN, it's not biteing

I would wait for a couple of weeks.Samsung has said that the official GB will released mid-April.
i´m on ultimate 8.2 for more than a week now and i´m really happy with it. bluetooth works with my parrot now about 95%. and i have to say my phone has to re-connect 30 times a day. all i do is turn off wlan+3g and i also turn off bluetooth in longer workbreaks, because if bluetooth is on for hours than it crashes.
i will not change to ginger until an official version will be released, because ultimate is the best rom i could get for my sgs.
Maybe wait for more stable version of custom rom.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA Premium App
i tried both, JV1 and JVK, but in my opition a custom froyo is still better.
bluetooth did not work better in ginger also.
Wait for an official Gingerbread release. You will be better off installing a custom ROM based on the latest 2.2.1 release until then.

i tried a lot of roms in the last weeks, but in my option ultimate rom is the best custom froyo rom.

i was always unlucky with ultimate roms, but i've been on SIMPLY GALAXY, its brilliant. i would recommend INSANITY as well
for me if i will be ready for gb, i will go for MIUI or CM7, however, im still a chicken to do it
simply is quite ok. good speed, but i have huge battery drain with this rom.
i never tried insanity. looking foreward for a test.
wait official release of gingerbread then update on some of custom roms
When I upgraded from stock 2.2 to stock JV Gingerbread, my battery life EASILY has doubled, and EVERYTHING is faster. This is no lagfix nonsense or anything else, just stock.

I was running Juwe's 4.3 JVH with a Damian kernel and front cam fix which was pretty damn good
JVK AND JVO are the best in my opinion with all the other ones i had problems like things crashing
jvb even crashed the video driver once.
P.S. imho most bugs and issues are selfmade. Although i 'm not a developer, i would always recommend to do a clean upgrade with wiping caches and factory reset! And you should't rely on titanium backup batches to work properly. User apps might be restored by tb but be careful in regards to system apps.
Biggest problem might be the lack of patience when it comes to restoring data. Do it step by step and do a lot of reading guides and follow them thoroughly. Then you should be fine.
But thats just my amateur point of view.

So far ive used ficeto JVH and its very smooth but not very visually pleasing. Another good one ive heard its Ezbase. But you have to theme it if you want it to look good.

do i need psychotherapy ??
after doing my root research and stuff, when i started to flash custom roms, i did like 5-6 in the first day started with stock GB, after i did CM7, MiUi, Darky... but i didn't get comfortable with neither, so i decided to stay stock for the moment and went with the JVO + CF-Root, definetly a good start for a root beginner (noob)
beware: if you get the flash / root bug, you'll never get over it, its like a f. virus

Well said mate. I've said more than once on this site that if you install a clean rom over the remnants of old
Roms then don't blame the new rom for any bugs. Make sure it's a totally clean, full flash, then judge.
I've never had a drain problem for example and flashed lots of roms. Not always, but occasionally I do a "full" belt and braces flash which involves format internal sd, factory reset, flash new rom, factory reset. Maybe a bit over the top, but it's prevented problems for me and I've run jv1, a,b,h, and now o after eclair and froyo and loads of custom roms too

You could always download ROM Manager instead, such an easy way out though haha

[Q] Lots of questions before I flash my device.

So, I have a SGS I9000t and am currently very frustrated with the official firmware 2.2.1, since some apps are having terrible issues. Whats worse is that lots of my programs are having constant crashes. My available ram is always getting capped, and i have to uninstall some programs that add functionality that while unnecessary they're nice to have.
Now I have been thinking, what to do? I hear I could flash my device. Doing so would improve its performance, even update to gingerbread. So now i have some questions. I bought this phone and recklessly installed darky's rom. It worked, but without 3g. Other than that, it was pretty amazing. I kept screwing around with it trying to fix 3g and finally bricked it. Took it in for warranty and got a new one.
I dont want to repeat the same mistakes, so this time i want to be extra careful.
Is there a way to do a complete backup? Like every single piece of data in ALL of my phone's memory backup. In case this flash goes wrong, I can just make it work just as it was before?
Is there a way to try roms before flashing? Like just load a rom on top of another rom without altering the current rom.
I would like to evade roms with 2.2.1 firmware, because of the problems mentioned before, so whats the best, non 2.2.1 rom available? Most stable, just plain best.
Since y phone is a i9000t my modem seems to have some problems when flashing, so here are the details of my phone: Model GT-I9000T // FW Ver 2.2.1 // Kernel 2.6.32.9 [email protected] #1 // Build FROYO.UBJP9
Im sorry if this is a lot of info, i just want to do this right. If I flash my phone its for better funcionality, not to get worse. Thanks for your time, if youve read this far. Hopefully you can help me out.
You are asking to be spoon fed information that is out there already!
1st rule of forum is look before you ask, people will help you if you make the effort, but you have to make the effort first. Sorry if this is harsh, so as a pointer, read the main q&a first as a starter

Ahh yes. Ive read a lot actually. Not the basic stuff though. I may have to sit down and read up.
One quick question though, Im sure its not in the FAQ.
I have been dealing with my phone and I see now that many of the problems im having are created by the apps themselves. Will changing my rom actually help greatly? Is 2.3.3 recomemded?
Sent from my GT-I9000T using XDA App
samsung use rfs file system that decays over time, hence people tend to lagfix to cure this, ie. Convert to ext4, this is done through a kernel tweak, you need to start reading and learning, im sorry but I wont do your homework for you!
Sent from gt i9000 insanity 8.5/fugumod
Your problems are not due to 2.2.1 Its the best non GB rom .
Your first step is factory reset .
Second check Kies for an update .
Third step would be to remove these problem apps .
But i just spotted the problem at some stage you installed a darkys rom
Known killer of phones ..
Total removal is flash stock froyo 2.2 rom with pit and repartition checked .
jje
I flashed darkys rom but traded that phone for a new one. So I have a fresh factory 2.2.1 and its working very well. My biggest problem is the bug with programs resetting/not saving settings because the old data stays after uninstalling. Also the rom runs great, what im looking for is better compatibility on perhaps another rom. But you say its as good as it gets so I may be staying with this rom.
Edit; Also, I must add that Kies cannot update my device, because my service provider has my device locked on that firmware. Now what you suggest is flashing to 2.2, then updating to a stock gingerbread rom through Kies? Should'nt I just flash GB and get it over with?

Well, now that I have a couple of people here, I will ask, which if these two roms would be better to install?
Gingerbread 2.3.3 stock Samsung or
Juwe's Smart Edition http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=964672
I like how juwes sounds, but it says something that bothers me, and that is, that it has no bugs, and that is an extremely ignorant claim, since the gingerbread release will always have bugs, no piece of software is perfect, ever. That said, it could be much better than samsungs, so help me out on this one. Thanks.

If you go around looking for a problem, you are most likely to find one. This applies to more than just phone firmwares. Like you said, no system is truly perfect... With that said, I would recommend you try a custom ROM over any stock one... And Juwe's ROM is a pretty trusted one on this board... so sure, go ahead and try it!

This is a known problem, i had it happen to me several times on froyo firmwares. Solution is to go into settings, applications, then clear data and cache of the problem program, then uninstall it, and go into /data and /dbdata/ and find any data the program has left behind and delete it. Reinstall the app from the market, and the problem should be gone. Havent had it crop up in gingerbread yet.

[Q] Best ROM for my GF :)

Hi All,
Need some advice about the Galaxy S. I am a Nexus S user and would love to get my Girlfriends Galaxy S running better if not as well as my Nexus S. I have tried to get the galaxy S running well but now I think I have done all I can to optimise the stock ROM it has onboard!
I know that for the SGS you must use Odin to flash new ROMs – any warnings to me being a NS user with our easy CWM flashing? I will of course be doing a Nandroid backup of her current ROM in case things go wrong Currently the SGS is rooted and running a branded O2 2.2 Froyo Rom. I have Lag Fixed it using OCLF (Not great I know, but its not my phone I can't always fiddle with it to update it!) and tried to remove bloat using Titanium Backup.
The advice I would love is – which ROM do I put on her phone, when she isn’t the most tech savvy person. I figure there are 3 main options (but feel free to correct me!) for a stable and quick ROM that I won’t have to keep touching and updating or fixing:
Stock 2.3.4 (JVP?)
Nice because it’s stock and from what I’ve read it seems to run fast and is the latest version of phone android like on my Nexus
Darkys ROM
Seems to be a nice option – fast stable and tweaked (a fixed version of stock really no?), but perhaps it has too many options for my non tech savvy GF to be using?
Cyanogen Mod
Only reason I resist this is because it is probably too much of a shift away from the Samsung experience my partner is used to - I would prefer it (I have a nexus so naturally!) but I doubt my girlfriend would appreciate the change. Also it seem CM isn't quite ready for the SGS yet...
Any thoughts or guidance much appreciated! I have searched a lot about the SGS, but not having the phone myself, I figure it might be best to ask users of their opinions and steal your advice!
As this one is for your girlfriend and you are planing already with a "stock" ROM you should for sure go for the latest 2.3.4 Android Version in JVP.
I personally would never go for a "stock" but this is just my personal opinion since I am daily with the phone and can repair things by my own.
Related to ODIN there is not much to say if you read all the guides completely.
I flashed my phone many, many times even using seperat kernels and removing thing before, adding and changing scripts without brick the phone.
Try to safe the EFS dircetory is the only thing I would recommend if it is not mentioned in the guides before doing a flash.
Hope it helps for your decision.
i suggest u use darkky's rom in that case cause the battery alone lasts longer than stock that means more time spent talking to u..
I suggest you leave her phone alone
Sent from my HTC Desire HD using XDA Premium App
I would use one of ramads stock deodexed roms, and then flash a custom kernel, that way she gets no lag, stock, you are safe and your love life will thrive! Now that is slick womanizing!
Insanity cm 016/glitchv10c
after couple testing different ROM .... i am very pleased with Juwe's ROM ..... stable , all works fine , fantastic look ....
Darky's ROM is not a 'fixed' version of stock.
Just go with the latest stock firmware for the best performance, ie flash XXJVQ with Odin after backing up all data

Thanks to you all for your help! I think I am going to go for a stock 2.3 based rom either JVP or JVQ - probably JVQ as google talk video works with it, and now skype video works too - both of which she wants.
@solar666
Thanks I'll definitely be following the guides to the letter - and yeah an EFS backup is also on my to-do list!
@doomsdaycs
Battery Life is very much important, but having seen some youtube videos of Darky's rom, I think the interface & option changes & colours might be too much of a shift - I'd prefer it though!
@acejacksooted & @carvax
Id love to leave it alone, but she complains that it isn't responsive like my nexus and lags sometimes - so I don't have much choice but to deal with it!
@slaphead20
Is there much of an advantage to a deodexed samsung rom? Also, I hope you don't use your phone to chat up all women that way
@bisko69
Is Juwe's rom that different from samsung's roms?
@Mothatt
Yeah I think that's the way I will go - safe!
@jaju123
Again, seems like the best option at the moment. Thanks!
Any other thoughts are more than welcome! Thanks again .
All custom-ROMs except CM7 and MIUI are based on Samsung-stock-ROMs.
ROM-cookers of Samsung-based ROMs add some features and change the colors of the UI. So you should take the custom-ROM which has the nicest colors.

Darkys rom!
I've used many roms, but I always flash Darky v10.1 back.
Ist just so goood, battery life is amazing and still the phone is so simple.
Seeing that your GF rom is still in Froyo, isnt it better to upgrade it to at least stock Gingerbread?
Perhaps you can flash a stock deodexed rom, flash a kernel for root and CWM (i recommend SpeedMod), then flash a theme from the theme forums that you think she will like.
maybe you can even make a theme for her based on what she likes
conclusion: Stock rom with custom theme, if she like to stay on stock samsung experience and a nicer UI

That's not a factory ROM or even one designed for the Captivate. It is a custom ROM based on i9000 Gingerbread. Could be the modem is not compatible with your service area and is using more processor cycles than normal. You should read up on ROMs in the Dev forum and perhaps reflash to a proper Cappy ROM or at least a modem for your area. Check the modem sticky in Dev.
My phone was also slow on Apex 7.2,very slow. It is also due to the fact you are using Touchwiz 4 on your phone(it really slows down your whole phone).
I'd suggest you going back to stock and do a master clear and install Continuum 6.1 afterwards. Download GO Launcher EX as well, it is free. I use continuum 6.1 as well on my cappy with that launcher and it runs really smooth

or flash a Captuavte GB ROM. I have yet to flash an i9000 GB ROM that didn't slow down to a crawl after a few weeks of use. I just wiped Contimuum 6 after a nice run but it became laggy over the past few days. Putting Cog 5 on it and put it in mothballs when the SGS 2 arrives. I will be glad to be over the i9000 on the captivate situation. The I9000 GB ROMS a re GREAT featurewise but something about the Captivate hardware makes them unreliable in the longer term for me anyway. Apex was the worst offender. Contimuum is a much better ROM but even it became laggy after a while. The wife has had Cog 5 B2 as long as I have had C6 and her handset is exactly the same speed as it was when I flashed it on release weeks ago..

+1 as far as getting some kind of lag with i9000 eventually. It seems I had to clear cache and dalcich cache on a regular basis. So I switched that cappy back to DGs Cog5b2 and then b3 and it JUST WORKS. It is my second (backup, testing) phone and love the way it works.
Also I have been on CM7 since they first made it available, I have seen the bugs go down to almost nothing and it is JUST SMOOTH and FAST. It is my daily driver and I will NEVER give it up. Battery life isn't great but I have three batteries so I manage. Also PLUS ONE when the SGS2 comes out it will be my next phone and HOPEFULLY CyanogenMOD will be at least as good on it as it is my Cappy.

You are already running GB boot loaders (probably I9000's) So when flashing roms or to stock try flashing the ones that DO NOT include boot loaders. But like everyone said you should look for KF1 based roms if u want gingerbread rom.
