I was reading this thread [RECOVERY] Monster RootPack 0.7 / Clockwork Recovery 3.0.0.5 SD (1.1 Compatible!). But, since I am new to this forum I couldn't post there. I hope this is the right place to ask for help.
I upgraded my NC to 1.1.0 successfully. I put Autonooter 3.0.0 on a MicroSD card. With my NC off, I inserted the card and then plugged the NC into my PC. I got a black screen for over 5 minutes. It looked like nothing was happening, so, I disconnected the NC, removed the SD card and tired to turn the NC on. No joy, it won't turn on and won't boot at all. I think my Nook is bricked. Any ideas what went wrong?
I've read some other threads about similar problems. It seems there is a fix to get it back to stock (1.1.0). I hope the Recovery thread I mentioned above is where the answer lies. But, I'm a bit confused and don't want to make any more mistakes. I only have one 4GB SD card at my disposal right now.
My questions are as follows:
1. Is my NC bricked beyond hope of recovery?
2. If I follow the procedures in this post can I get it to boot from the sd card even though it won't turn on at all?
3. What is the difference between the Rootpack and the Clockwork Recovery Image?
4. This is the confusing part. Should I download the RootPack? Or, should I download a bootable Clockwork SD card (128mb, 1gb, 2gb, 4gb, 8gb)
5. Since I only have a 4GB card, what should I choose?
6. Should I opt for 1.0.1, or 1.1.0 where it was still working.
7. Can I get all of this on one 4GB card?
8. Is there anything else I should be weary of before starting this procedure?

This is the right place to ask general questions.
1. Most certainly not.
2. Yes, using a bootable CWR SD is the way to go.
3. Totally different. The Rootpack is the name given to a package that helps you root your Nook. CWR image is a recovery image. That means you can boot to this recovery utility and apply changes to you NC (like repairing stuff, making backups, etc.).
4. An image will adapt to the drive. If you have a 4GB SD and burn (dd) a 1GB image to it, your SD will suddenly present itself as a 1GB SD. If you format it with the right tool, your SD will be 4GB again. So don't panick, if it says 1GB after burning, it's jut "adapted to the image". You haven't lost any disk space.
5. 1GB would be enough, but you can go up to 4GB image with a 4GB.. It could sometimes be a problem to apply an image which is the exact same size as the drive. I would use th 1GB, which is plenty for what you are going to do.
6. That's up to you. Both should work.
7. Yes.
8. Just read threads exhaustively before attempting anything..
So what you need to do is read threads about this CWR Bootable img to learn how to burn it to your SD.
Then, find the appropriate .zip files to flash (apply) (1.1 recovery and 1.0.1 are available in dev section.
Copy them to root of SD.
Boot with the SD Card and apply zip files from SD.
If your NC should still have problems booting, you can also apply a boot repair zip file, that you will find on my Nook Color restore to stock tread in dev..

His Rootpack wont work on 1.1.0 You should have seen that in his instructions. It will only block 1.1.0 and fake it. You need to see this thread to fix your nook. It is 100% NOT bricked, just messed up atm. You can fix it tho. Read here:

Thanks for thr quick reponse Sam. I'm at work now, but will be able to use your suggestions later this afternoon\tonight. So, if I get a 1gb CWR image on my 4gb sd card, plus the 1.1.0 zip file and put it in the root of the sd card, the Nook should boot up even though I can't turn it on now? How long typacally will it take to boot up? What should I expect to see?

It will work. I have never heard of a 100%bricked NookColor to date. And I have read 1,000's of posts here over the past 4 months. IT is just your boot partition that is messed up and B&N made it check the sdcard first for a Boot partition, then fall back to eMMC. Thank you B&N !!!
I downloaded all the files, wrote them to my sd card, and put it in the Nook. When I connected the Nook to my pc, I got a messaage the the battery was too low to turn on. So, I took the sd card out, and put the Nook on charge. After a while, it turned on, booted up and when I checked my OS, I found that I had
version 1.1.0. Apparently, my attempt to root with autonooter 3, never got installed, partially or completely. And, my battery probably got to low to turn the nook on. So, I didn't need to use CWR after all. I apologize to all who have tried to help me. But, all replies were good and contained useful info.
Now, my question is: Should I try to use Autonooter 3 again, or is there an easier
(more foolproof) way to root v1.1.0?
I just got a nook last night with the sole intention of hacking it - and did so in a matter of minutes. Autonooter couldnt be easier! When you get to the part of putting the SD card in the nook and connecting it to USB to make it boot, just plug it in and go get a cup of coffee. Don't unplug or touch anything until it boots up by itself. At 1st I thought it wasn't doing anything as I didn't see a clockwork mod screen come up or anything, but just be patient and it'll tell you when it's done. Just make sure it's pretty well charged when you do it - mine was about 80% or so.
Honestly after less than a day of the rooted stock 2.1 Eclair OS, I'm ready to drop a fully customized Froyo or Gingerbread image on this thing. Autonooter it 1st and run it for a few days 1st and see what you think. I'm still learning the ins and outs of tinkering with this thing, but so far it seems much easier than the Epic and Moment I've been beating on. Seems pretty well unbrickable too thanks to the boot to SD 1st option B&N baked into this puppy.

Joe, I would recommend downloading the 1gb rootpack image and a restore to stock file. Make your bootable clockwork recovery image, place the resotre to stock file on the sdcard, turn your nook off, insert the sdcard, power on and flash the file. Thanks for your suggestion Riley, please take a look at my post # 7 above. Seemd my NC
had a low battery. When I charged it, all was ok. It booted up and I was back in 1.1.0.
But, I just now tried autonooter 3.0.0 again. When I pluged thr NC inyo my PC, I got some sort or warning message. I hit cancel and waited a few minutes. The message came up again. It said the device was not recognized. I unplugged, removed the card, and my fully charged NV won't turn on. And, windows explorer can not read the sd card. This is basically what happened yesterday to cause my panic. The sd card had all the files befor I inserted it into the NC. Now, it's unreadable and I can't turn on or boot the NC again.
Is it autonooter 3.0.0, or the card, or the Nook, or me?????
One correction to post # 10. I can read the sd card in windows explorer. But my NC won't turn on.
With sd card out of the Nook, I get a "Welcome to the Found New Hardware Wizzard"

I am having a problem and don't really know what to do. When I start my NC its stops at the N screen and goes no further. I've tried a lot of the different ways to get it back to stock with no luck. When I try to write CWM to my SD card with win32 it either doesn't have enough room to put the stock file on the zip with it or when I open the SD card it says the card needs to be formatted. The file is a tr.gz or something like that is there a step between that I am missing or just download the CWM and write to SD using win32? I also tried adb with no luck. I am very new to rooting so any super dumbed down instructions would be greatly appreciated.

You can put the rom image to a separate SD card. Just swap it after you boot up from cwr. I did it before for flashing froyo to emmc.

Just a noobish advise!
After configure everything and become accustomed to some of the NC behaviors this should not matter, but I remember at my first attempts at rooting the NC, using a Win7 PC was much easier than using Win XP or iOS devices. Might fix your 'not recognized' problems, sd card recognition and formatting problems etc.
It has CWM on it. I can get it to recovery but it will not recognize the SD or not mount it and I go to mount it in the menu and it says something like can not mount SD card so I have been trying to do the CWM SD burn but I keep getting the above errors I am on a vista computer so I will try it on my windows 7 one and see how that goes. And the different SD card one I will try that as well after work thank you for the help.

Yes I did try that one I put the nookie froyo on the SD and put it I'm my turned off NC and plugged it in to my computer and it sat at the N screen forever and after a while I took it off and it was still in the same state could the CWM be the problem?

Yes, they would work, burning an SD card, and copying the 1.0.1 (or whichever version you want to restore to) zip file to the SD card, and flashing that.
As for the OC kernel, Dalingrin has a .zip file that you flash from Clockwork just like how you installed phiremod. You'd want the one that is for CM7.

Do not unzip. Copy that zip onto your SD card that has CWM burned to it. The actual process of flashing it takes only a few seconds, not as long as flashing the whole ROM takes.

How to root your brand new Nook Color - For Noobs on windows - I'm sure this will all work from Mac too, but I do not have one so I don't know
-I know there are plenty of threads our there for this - but I figured I would compile my journey to root so that anyone slightly confused with the process of rooting, starting over and re-flashing stock nook, using root explorer is all in one area.
First things First - Without the Cyanogenmod team, everyone who has a hand in this at XDA, Dalingrin's overclock, everyone who compiled the files for recovery, Clockworkmod team, iomonster, everyone! This wouldn't be possible. Drop by their websites and buy them a beer or two.
Secondly - I am not responsible for any damage at all, if you don't follow simple instruction then too bad for you. Also, none of the above mentioned folks are responsible for any damage to your Nook Color (NC).
NOW FOR ROOT!!!
go to http://nookdevs.com/NookColor_Rooting and follow the instructions. Download the appropriate autonooter for your software version. (this can be checked on the nook by going to settings, device info, about nook)
Follow the helpful people at NookDevs instructions and thank them for their help!
After you achieve root you should see Market app in your extras tab in the Original Nook Software, This is good, if you don't go back and try again. Now pull out your card(dont forget to unmount and format) , and turn off your nook .
Let's Begin With CM7
First you will need to make yourself a bootable clockworkmod (CWM) to run your installation from -
download winimage for your PC - http://www.winimage.com/download.htm and install the appropriate file (obviously x86 for 32 bit PC, and x64 for 64 bit)
install it!
next download 7-Zip to extract the files!!! http://www.7-zip.org/
when installed go to tools/options/ and make sure tar is checked and gz is checked. You might as well select all!
Next download bootable clockwork image http://tsunade.net/nookdev/clockwork/0.1-ext4/
I used the 1GB one on my 8GB class 4 card. It burns faster and works just fine!
Burning Process!
First insure that your already formatted card is formatted by formatting again! woot for the word format! Next-
On a computer open win image
click ok!
plug in your microSD card
click on Disk tab
go down to restore virtual Hard Disk Image
Select your microSD
find the place you saved the image after extracting through 7zip (I saved to Desktop)
Click OK and it should start burning
after five minutes or so the image will be written to the microSD card
Now to install CM7!!!!!!!!!! Drop by their page if you want and donate some beer money!!!!

Now safely remove and plug the card in to the nook color

Thanks Faceman66 Only follow the install section and first boot section up until 2 if you have a DLINK router!!!! this is very important!!!! Once your done with the installation again, make sure to format the microSD card, do not use cyanogen it will mess everythin up, format it through your computer.
Dlink router connection issue!
The wifi in cyanogen just scans and disconnects constantly without connecting. Skip all of the first boot process like signing in to google, etc. Just get into the main screen of your new ROM. Connect it via USB to computer and "turn on USB storage" in the drop down notification bar.
Now preferably purchase the Root Explorer App on your phone or on your computer (you wont be able to access the nook color CM7 market yet. If you find it by other means I dont want to hear about it. if you download on your phone, download astro file manager as well, open astro file manager and click menu, tools, application backup. Find root explorer, back it up, pull it off your phone to the computer by searching the SD card for the "backups folder" and then drag and drop it onto your nook SD card. Use CM7 file explorer, find the APK and then install. Now using root explorer go to
/system/etc/wifi/ and find the tiwlan.ini file, at the top of the screen youll notice a button that says Mount R/W, click it. now press and hold on tiwlan.ini and open in text editor. go down about half way to find WifiAdhoc = 1 or something to that affect.
WiFiAdhoc is set to 1 on the cm7 builds but if you need change it to 0 for wpa/wpa2 will work.
Once that is set to 0, reboot, and connect to your internets.
WHAT IF I MESSED EVERYTHING UP AND MY NOOK COLOR IS BRICKED! IMPOSSIBLE! just follow these instructions!!!! Thanks to HittingSmoke over at addictive tips
This guide is broken and bricks the Nook. The problem is, it tells you to format /boot when you should NOT format boot.
If you have the black screen because of following this guide, here’s how to fix it:
Format your SD card and re burn that 1GB cwm image (It worked perfect for Me)
Next, download:

and

Copy them both to the SD card that you made with winImager.
Put in the SD card and hold the power button until it boots into recovery again.
Under Mounts and Storage, format /boot, /system, /data and /cache
Using the “Install zip from sdcard” option, flash “repartition-boot-with-stock.zip” THEN “nook-complete-restore-1.0.1.zip”
Take out the SD, reboot and you’ll be back to a working stock Nook.
After that, follow this guide:

Note: Do NOT use your Nook to format the SD card after installing CM7. There’s a bug and it will format /boot instead, returning you to the black screen problem and you’ll have to repeat the process. This is TRUE WITH PHONES AND THE NOOK COLOR

I am stuck on the boot logo ( the part where the android is being scribbled in directly after i plugged in the nook cable after first loading the sd card with winimage. It never goes past halfway on the scribble animation, and i am wondering if I may have done something wrong. Please reply.
You may need to go through the steps again to get it to work, it shouldnt hurt anything to do. Also try to write a different winimage and a different size download. If you have bigger than a 1gb card, i recommend getting the 1gb image file

I'm guessing when you say format sd card your means fat 32 correct? Also once done with everything do you suggest to parition sd card to allow a2sd or data2ext? Our use titanium back up when updating rom...
I actually dont usually use titanium back up but if you want to partition and use titanium backup, cm 7 will defenitely support it. Format in fat 32 definitely. Luckily now CM7 has fixed the D-Link issue so you should be good on text editing and the whole process should be expedited alot with how hard Cyanogenmod team has worked to make a pretty flawless copy of CM7 for Encore (Nook Color). Im running CM7.02 and it is fast, sleek and sexy!

I tried this on my nook color and when it booted it showed the default nook icon with the adobe copyright warning, for a second, then it showed a cyanogen mod logo for a second then a screen that said install failed reboot to try again. I thing that some part of the nook android is still there and is messing up the CM install. Any ideas?

First, what version is your Nook Color? These are outdated steps and files. Second, this is rooting (gaining superuser access and installing apps) and not installing CM7 or a custom rom. Can you tell us what exactly you did so we can try and help out more?
It is the BNRV200. I believe it had the latest BN firmware because I got it about 2 weeks ago.

If you're installing CM7, go here and read about the new partition guide since you probably have the new partition on yours.

I have a rooted nook with the stock firmware running off internal storage and CM7 running off my memory card. Today I went to try and install the 1.2 update and was unable to do so using the instructions from the B&N website. The NC would try to load the update and then I would be greeted with a sad Android logo.
I was eventually able to load the 1.2 update and here is how I did it.
1. Make sure you back everything up. I researched this solution for me and it worked for me. I did not create these files so dont get mad at ME if they dont work for YOU.
2. Use this file to remove CW recovery from your device. http://www.etoile-laconnex.com/CWR-removal-rootsafe.zip
you will need to use CW recovery to flash that zip file.
3. After you run the zip file. POWER OFF.
4. POWER ON with the SD card slot empty.
5. Since I had the stock FW on my internal memory I was able to boot to that. Once booted I dropped the 1.2 update zip on the root of the internal memory. Once the file was on the NC i removed the USB cable and then hit the lock button. I waited about 2 minutes and the nook rebooted and installed the update.
6. I was then able to reboot to my SDcard and then reinstall CW recovery.

Place the downloaded zip file onto the main nook color drive.

I had a nootered 1.0.1 NC and ran into the same issue, both when I tried to install the 1.1 update (gave up on it eventually) and this one. Finally I threw in the hat, backed up all my apps with appmonster, -though I hate how the recent update backs up the apps as #ed .apk's buried under two folders rather than the old appname.apk all in the backup folder. Made it easier to share b/w diff devices- did the 8 boot interrupts reset, copied the update file to the root directory of the NC (not sdcard) and Bob's your uncle, updated NC. Though truth be told I now wish I hadn't jumped the gun with it. I miss the crapload of great apps I had available (3 different Angry Birds...who wouldn't miss that? Who cares if it's essentially the same thing every time) and watching the nightly news on a 7 inch screen on the long BART ride home. Counting the hours 'til I stumble across the next auto nooter. Tick tock tick tock....

Potential fix for Angry Bird install after manual nooter
A lot of people are saying that you can't install angry birds with the SD card installed. This sounds like the problem that I had with my Droid X. To fix it I had to delete the file left from the prior install under .android secure on the SD card. I guess that Froyo sometimes has issues with this file getting corrupt on the micro SD and then it can't install correctly during updates and reinstalls. I think you lose all previous data but at least you have it working normally now with the SD card installed. I'll try it on my nook and post back. I would have put this in the manual nooter thread but I don't have enough posts to post there.
I use the SD card method to have the nook boot into CM7 and when the SD card is pulled, the nook would be stock to be used by my kids. But I think I messed things up and can't restore. Here is what I have done:
1- I tried to update the stock version to 1.3 manually from B&N website but soon realized I could not. It seems like when in CM7, I had tried to flash CWM recovery (which was not needed and is pretty buggy in SD card method for nook). Now the recovery in emmc appears to be CWM.
2-for some stupid reason when I got into CMM recovery, I formatted boot, system,data and cache (not sure if I did boot also or not). My thinking was to flash a stock image and be fixed. But I am now stuck.
Is there a way to go back to stock on the nook? I am still able to boot into SD card and CM7 nightly. Oh ya, I use Linux Ubuntu not windows. TIA
Sounds like you should get the system back to stock before proceeding any further.

I think my problem is that I'm not really rooted in true sense since I was running off the SD card. Maybe I shoudl root properly, then unroot?
I did kind of the same thing once. I made an Sd card image with CWM on another sd card -- basically as if you are going to install CM7 to emmc. However, once you get to the point where you would flash Cm7, use the stock zip ROM. It will install that to emmc so it will be back to normal. You should then be good to go.

If you follow the instructions you should be left with an unrooted initialized stock Nook Color. Register your account. Then you can wait for the NC to download the 1.3 update, or side load it. Once that is installed you have an unrooted 1.3 stock system.
From there you can try your CM7 card. Don't forget to remove your SD card at the very beginning since like a PC the NC will try to boot off the SD card if it is present.

when I follow the instruction, I am not given the factory reset option. I am stuck at the n screen. It flashed the read forever but then stuck at the n screen. Do I have to wait longer than 5 minutes?
None of this is mine, I owe it ALL to the threads mentioned below.
So as in many posts on XDA say, it's almost impossible to brick the Nook. What a great device. I had to format my SD card to use it to "un-brick" my nook but it was done. I Mainly used the info here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=949699
Burnt a bootable CWM image onto my SD card. It took a while doing it with dd in Linux. I'm sure it's the same in Windows or Mac. It took about 20-30 minutes. It also took a while to unzip/extract the img file from the downloaded file. Be patient
Then used the CWM recovery remover file from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=914690 to remove my CWM recovery and used the 1.0.1 file from same thread to flash the stock image onto the nook.
Once the SD card is ready, just drop those files in the root of the sd card. It should have 4 other files in it to boot into CWM recovery from the sd card and let you use the menus to flash those two zip files. It took a while but it's all in those threads. Thanks to the members. Now lets see if I can go up to 1.3 and then root it again.
