I have an Ipad1, a Nook Color and an Evo 4g (both cm7) and if my wife told me I could only keep one it'd be the Nook Color (she would never do such a thing in her right mind). Its snappier, perfect size, easier to get ANYTHING on it, I can't stand iTunes and my ipad is jailbroken themed as gingerbread android. I actually have my ipad on craigslist for a trade and cash for a Xoom, hoping some apple nut got a Xoom from one of his rich aunts or something. Don't get me wrong I love my Evo 4g.... I think there's more custom Roms for that phone then any other phone but...... my Nook goes EVERYWHERE with me now. I own a restaurant and am the Executive Chef and I'm constantly grabbing my NC, whether it be for listening to Howard Stern, Facebook, inventory, recipes etc. The only problem I'm having is finding a decent movie player for my NC (I use Vplayer no and meh). Just my 2cent for the morning in case anyone is on the fence about what 7" tablet to get. And for the camera and GPS I always have my phone in my pocket (back pocket not front, I don't want ball cancer). Honestly the ONLY thing I use my ipad for is Netflix and when that comes to Android I wont touch it. Hope that all made sense, I'm typing this with my morning coffee. If anyone disagrees with anything I've said speak up.
Thanks,
Dave
The speakers on the NC are a bit of a bummer and Im running a kernel that boosts the sound but still pretty low.

I've got an NC and an EVO 4G also. Nice combination. I don't think I'd want to give either up. Actually, it's pretty remarkable how much like a mini NC the Evo is. The other day I went to Las Vegas and the hotel wanted to charge $12.00 a day for wireless. Yet, I was getting excellent 4G reception on my Evo, so there was no point. I don't have a tethering plan, though, so I used teh Evo to surf and keep up with e-mail. It's a shame cell companies try to charge an additional $20-30 for your phone's wireless hotspot feature (I know I could get it for free by rooting, but I'm not ready to travel down that path just yet).
Funny you say that. I keep my Evo next to my NC all day at the restaurant (faldonis.com gotta plug my biz) and keep it tethered the whole time (hope sprint doesn't catch on) and its snappy as hell. I've had my NC for 2 weeks and haven't picked up my ipad since, battery might be dead Idk. I'm serious when I say when Netflix comes to Android I will never touch my ipad and probably give it to my kids if I don't find a rich apple lover on çraigslist with a Xoom.

you should do your good deed for the day and send me your ipad for free
If you are looking for a good movie player, try Mobo Player with the Arm7 Neon codec pack (which it should grab automatically for you. Given that it is good enough to decode some of the 720p movie trailers out there, i think it will fit your bill.
I'm still having problems playing some movies with mono and the addons. I'm downloading them as mp4 ...... is that the correct format or is there another way I should be downloading the movies? @beezy - I would give it to ya if my 3 year old daughter wouldn't woop my ass.

Soemthing to try - press and hold on the file you want to play, and select the software decoding, to see if that helps.
It(Nook) really is great. The Nook forums are a bit more crazy than the G2 forums but I managed to get phiremod going nonetheless.
Yeah, I am really glad I got the Nook!

This is the samething thing that is happening with me. I got an ipad, nookie, and my captivate. And ever since i got the NC i take it everywhere i go and the great thing is that since the captivate is an android i can tether with no problem (unlimited data) without running the risk of getting the letter from at&t saying to stop tethering. My brother has an iphone 4 and we tether the same amount of time and he got the letter to stop. I think only iphones can be detected of such use. Anyways, the only problem is that the captivate has a super bad gps and is pretty much worthless for that, but im in the process of getting the Inspire. Aside from that, the Nook Color is awesome! Just a few days a go i went to a restaurant and as i waited to be seated i booted HC from SD card and the manager asked me if it was the Galaxy Tab cus they're almost the same size and as soon i told him it was a NC he was amazed by its capabilities. Makes me proud to own one!

I have an evo 4g and youre honestly doing yourself harm by not rooting it considering unrevoked is a one click root. The sheer number of roms for the evo is incredible and I cant and never will return to stock.

Agreed. There is no real reason not to root.. do it!
On a side note; did anyone think that the title sounds suspiciously like a joke?
"So, an Ipad, Nook, and Evo walk into a bar.......".
The ipad says to the bartender...... agreed with the prior two posts. Go to unrevoked.com (YouTube it), one click root it and head over to the xda Evo forums and take your pick of a ton of sick Roms. I pretty much tether my NC everyday from my Evo ..... should I chill out so I don't get a letter from sprint? That would SUCK with the Evo 3d around the corner.

I am going to Barnes & Noble today to get the Nook Color. I want to buy it so I can root it and use it as a tablet/ereader. Are the newest version of the NC's rootable or do I need to buy an older version off eBay or something. Thanks in advance!
No, you're fine. The current firmware, 1.01, is rootable. It'll probably come with 1.0 anyway.
If you want a great value on a quality android tablet, I don't think you'll be disappointed!

If you can live without GPS, cameras, 3G, etc., I see no reason to pay over twice as much for a Galaxy Tab. Mine has everything I would have wanted from a Galaxy Tab-- and this is without a custom ROM.

Yep - that's exactly what I do. Wireless Tether app (version pre-12 I think I'm using) works great.
While there's no GPS for navigation, it gets other location services from the network, so Google Maps and whatnot get my location to within 100 yards or so.
I’m using my DroidX to tether.
I don’t need camera and crap on the tablet.
I have NFS Shift running on mine flawlessly along with just about all the apps I’ve installed.
I think the new thread should be “what does not work”. Everything I’m using sems to work.

You may want to buy somewhere that has a better return policy, but thats really up to you.
When I was at B&N today just to look, two people walked in within 5 minutes with defective units...One had no WIFI, the other had screen issues.
They sent the guy with no Wifi home, telling him he must have typed in his password wrong...They would not exchange for him.. They never even looked at it.
They sent the lady home because she did not have her charger.
I JUST bought mine at Best Buy...First one had a dead dark pixel right smack in the middle of the screen, also had some dust and the flicker everyone mentions..
I exchanged it, however they really gave it the 3rd degree and looked like they did not want to exchange it..They pulled all the packaging apart, turned it on, went through all the menues, etc....
Second one is in good shape, but does have a stuck pixel that only is seen on a full black screen..I can live with that I guess.
Examine yours closely, because I have a feeling there is quality issues.
I would assume they are getting a large amount of returns now and are probably going through them thoroughly..
Alright thanks, I might consider buying from Best Buy then instead.
Just got mine Christmas Eve. I had looked long and hard at a Galaxy Tab. But at the price, I just couldn't pass up the Nook. With rooting, it is everything that I wanted in a pad. As mentioned before, coupled with my rooted HD2, it is an awesome duo.
And as a stand-alone, the Nook does everything I could want. It came with 1.0, but updating was simple. Auto-nootering was just as simple. AWESOMENESS!
Another possibility for the return scrutiny is that that B&N/Best Buy are now well aware of what many are doing with these, and are happy to sell more units--as long as it isn't causing them to lose money.
. . . And one way they could lose money is if people screw things up rooting and want a replacement or refund. Dead pixels have nothing to do with rooting, but the retail world could easily over-generalize as "don't take NookColor returns lightly."

I love my evo to death! I took a cruise through the hero forums today to see if there's any new and cool to do to my moms hero(still a good phone), I noticed a lot of you guys are on the fence trying to decide between the shift and the big one!
A couple things I want to point out. Shift may have slightly better specs but regardless I have never seen a slow down on anything, life is fast and large.
Also on the keyboard side, the on screen keyboard on the evo is much better than the hero due to a improved touch sensor and just having the buttons be larger. Also after you get it you can remove the stupid arrows(they take up too much space).
Go down to a Sprint store and play around with them till you find something that really makes you say yes this is sweet. For me, I have large hands and the evo is a lot easier for me to use because of the big screen(also I use the kick stand at least twice a day.). And they just got hdmi out working too!
Also in no way am I trying to put down the Shift, just pointing out even though papa evo is older its still in no way a slouch.

I'm glad sprint is sticking with the EVO brand for its flagship android devices. Don't get me wrong, I like choices, but I mean the EVO is almost a year old, and it hasn't been until recently that anything else worth buying has come out (atrix, nexus s, etc.). Now that they're refreshing it, I'm sure the new EVO will be the best thing on the market for a long time.

I'm waiting on the EVO 3D
Here's what I did... may help someone...
I knew my upgrade was going away come this Friday. So, I used my upgrade to get my new Evo (upgraded from old beloved Hero). Got it at Best Buy. Forked over $149 (had a $50 coupon) and paid them the extra $40 for their BuyBack program & BlackTie. Original retail cost of the Evo is listed at $599.
Then, I upgraded my plan to Shared to include my mom (porting her away from TMobile... so, that's an extra $150 service credit promotional from Sprint right there). BestBuy is currently running a new activation promotion and gave her a free LG Optimus S, retailing at $399. I spent an extra $40 for their BuyBack program on this phone also. Then, I gave my mom my old Hero and had Sprint do a free handset swap. So, now I've got this free LG Optimus sitting around in a box, never gonna be used. And I'm canceling the mandatory BlackTie $10/month on the 31st day from purchase.
Still with me here? So... when the new Evo 3D comes out, all I gotta do is take my current Evo back into Best Buy within the next 6months and they give me a $299 gift card for my Evo on BuyBack, and $199 for the never been opened Optimus S.
I failed ethics in high school. And college.

And your mom gets your ****ty old Hero. LMAO. JK, Sounds as if you worked the system for sure. Question though, Lets say the 3D retail is 599, 699, 799 without the upgrade price. Will they roll back your eligibility to get the phone at the upgrade price? I guess it's better than spending the full retail.
You are getting back 498 for sure but you come up short and then if your.. "Mom's" hero breaks... then you have to get here a new Optimus S on Ebay.
I do hope it works out for you. Sounds like some of the finagling I do.

Trying to get used android phones for my parents.
Going to change their verizon service to page plus 1200 plan.
They will save almost 100 bucks per month changing to page plus with more minutes.
Need help picking out good used android phones for parents.
My top choice is Droid X right now
big screen, lightweight, on craigslist for 100-130.
Right now they are using old LG touchphone(resistive screen)
that automatically calls and txt in their pocket.
Are you sure android is the best way to go? I know that even my parents get confused over something more complicated than a flip phone....
If you do want android, The droid x is my personal phone, but its pretty bulky and takes getting used to. If you are going used, I would get the Samsung Fascinate. They are easier on the eyes, and the TouchWiz UI will be easier to use for them than MotoBlur. They are seeling in my area for around $100 on craigslist.
You may want to look into a cheaper LG with a keyboard too.
I agree with you my parents get confused using a flip phone. But yea the samsung fascinate is an easy to use phone

Fully agree. The simpler, the better. And WP7 would give them a super simple and very elegant and nice phone. It's what I would get for mine, hands down, no question. You can get a Samsung Focus for as little as $150 on eBay or around $200 elsewhere online.
I have been offered a Droid bionic for my droid charge. Straight up trade. I was hoping you guys could provide some insight.
How do you like the bionic? Also, if any former Charge owners are lurking I would really be interested in you're opinion. I am really just biding my time til the galaxy nexus is released, so I figured the bionic would fetch a little more than my charge on the open market as well. Thanks for you're input!

The Bionic is very fast and it works great with tethering as the Charge sucks at it.
So i say... get the Bionic is less than a heartbeat!
PS: I rooted mine, kept the stock ROM and tether it without any problems using the factory Hot Spot app. I had to make a single registry change using a $3 app. Well worth it. I use about 10-13GB data a month and VZN hasn't said squat to me.

agreed on the screen, however when it lacks the primary function, to make and receive calls it becomes quite useless you need a super amoled paper weight
Coming from a Charge I can tell you that it will take a while to get used to the screen on the Bionic. The screen, while better than the one on the Atrix and Droid X2, is no competition for samled+. However, once you get past the screen, the smoothness and speed of the Bionic will win you over. Plus the Gig of ram is a huge upgrade over the paltry amount that you gad to struggle through with the Charge. The entire Android experience is more enjoyable on the Bionic.

Hell I'll trade you my charge for it. I've been wanting to get a bionic ever since I went to the store last week but I'm locked in to two years with this thing.
I would do it. Lol

My Bionic was a substitute for what would have been my 4th Charge, if that tells you anything.
And honestly, the screen doesn't look bad except next to a Charge. It's quite bright and the text clarity is incredible- it's easier on my eyes for Kindle reading than any of the other phones I've used. And the difference is less noticeable over time; my girlfriend kept her Charge (for now) and I'm not bothered when picking up my Bionic after using it.
Any thoughts on moving from a Thunderbolt to a Bionic? Is that a step up or a step down? Getting kind of bored with the TB and like the Bionic when I played around with it at the Verizon store.

I'm much happier with my bionic than the bolt, the only thing is the screen doesn't look as good, but the brightness isn't a problem on the bionic like it is on the bolt.

The screen is the main issue with the phone, and tu do get use to it but the text clarity is very bad at times. Black text is fine but a lot of colored text is impossible to read and white text is a nightmare if its small like text in the browser.
I just got a topic reply from XDA and lol'd as I've been an Iphone owner now for about 3 months. All I have to say is I'm a happy camper again when it comes to having a cell phone. I had countless issues with multiple Revo's stock and rom'd out. ***** at VZW enough you can get lucky and get out of such a terrible phone. Yeah I lost my 4G (which i had turned off on my Revo to attempt to get 7hrs of battery) but not being a heavy data user it doesnt bother me especially because I get almost 2 days out of my 4s. Not trying to get on an Apple rant but if you simply use your phone as a phone and want it to be reliable it may be worth looking into!
Sorry, but no I'll never purchase iCrap. I have an iPod touch 2nd generation because that was what was cool back in the day and now iPhones are cool and I prefer my Android over iCrap any day. I may lose out on ton of the new games that are out on iOS months sometimes years before Android but that's fine with me since I'd rather have my better performing OS that has new features and aren't behind on features.
They upgraded me to a bionic from the revolution then to the rezound all for free lolv

I was upgraded to the Nexus. Couldn't see being on an iPhone.

Definitely not turning this into a debate, I'm just saying if you are having fits with your Revo you can get out of it if you really complain and I'm pretty happy with my iPhone. It never needs rebooted, camera couldnt get much better, battery life is insanely good (charges very fast too), and plugs into my car to play music lol.

All of that can be done with an Android.

Sure but with a Revo....no.. like I said not an android bash thread just saying you can get out of it and I happen to like the choice I made to go to the Iphone.
Too bad the Revo soured you on Android. While the iphone is a well made device I could never put up with the limitations like the tiny screen, no widgets, and no Google navigation.. Just for more battery life. Glad it worked for you though.

I can safely say that the Revo turned me off to anything LG.

I liked it but after 4 replacements for various issues I had to get rid of it. Was tired of seeing so many issues. With the work mt did and all that the phone was great.

I'm with Indy, i just had too many issues with multiple phones. The Revo didnt turn me off to android I just couldnt find a better solution at the time. Its not just the better battery life....the exchange is great as it syncs deletes and read messages! Yes I really miss google nav (cant find a good nav program on apple) The smaller footprint of a phone I prefer as it fits in my pocket when I ride my CBR1000

I personally love my phone. ive got it all tuned out. I think people that say oh the OS sucks havent rooted there phone before. All you need is a phone with an unlocked bootloader and decent hardware and you can root it and make it unreconizable when you compare it to the stock OS. Mine does what i need so if an iphone works for your needs, then there ya go.

Hey how did you actually rant enough to get a new phone for free cause my revo is starting to have tons of issues and i am not wanting to go into my Verizon store because they will try and use my insurance plan on it because they are like oh for 100 dollars you can get a new phone etc. its just i dont want to spend another 100 dollars on the damn phone and sign another contract.
