Newbie here After reading and searching XDA I finally registered. As my first post question, also for guidance. I just bought a new locked T-Mobile S.G.Tab and I plan to use as my phone, but my phone carrier service provider is AT&T.
What should I do first? Root, Unlock, Flash Euro Firmware, what is the proper way to do this.
Best way of rooting.
How to unlock. like hex editor?
What is the latest Euro Firmware Available? like Rotohammer
BTW my only experience is when I root and flash my X10 to global 2.1
Thanks
Reply to myself: I just got it flashed with gingerbread and cf rooted. It scares the hell when I got stock in samsung logo by the end. By watching videos helped, did turned the tab off and then reboot. Wow just wow gingerbread in my eyes
Wish me luck on unlocking
Just so you know you wont get 3G with a Tmobile Tab & AT&T service, and not sure if you will need to flash the AT&T JK3 modem or not.
I did the unlocking on the device after making a few backups of that EFS folder.
I used Hexeditor from market & Root Explorer.
Finally did unlock by using root explorer to access efs folder the hex editor to change .bin I did test call and txt messages.
More power to xda, roto, chainfire and other who make videos.
You need to flash the roto-2g modem.bin to get voice on the t-mobile tab. Its in the roto modem switch thread.

Here's the deal : i bought an sgs from an national operator, and flashed froyo on it.it locked my phone, asking for sim network code.i used the metoh described in a thred around here and got the code from the bml3 file, but it didn't work.
Now i got another sgs from the same operator and was wondering if i make a backup on this phone using rom manager or any other method, is it possible to have it restored on the locked phone? I'm going to make a backup of the efs folder on the locked phone so i can restore it after. If anyone has a pertinent reply, please do so! i can't unlock my phone any other way.hope this will work.thanks
yes it works as long as they are of the same model or very similar model
--edited--
As above...

i think my captivate got an automatic update.
How do i know the nvdata.bin file has been deleted?
is there anyway to unlock if the nvdata.bin has been deleted ?
FYI I ran the market app from " DaGentooBoy" which also not able to find the unlock code. am I screwed ?
Why do you want to unlock?
Are you planning on switching to another GSM carrier or going overseas?
Are you planning on selling the phone on eBay and buying a different phone?
Or do you only want to unlock for the sake of saying you have an unlocked phone?
If you answered no, no, and yes (in that order) to any of those questions then you don't NEED to unlock.
Also, it was documented that upgrading to JH7 or JI6 deleted the nvdata.bin file from your phone, thus eliminating the possibilty of unlocking after you upgraded. You should have done it straight from JF6 when you got the phone, and backed up that file for future use. It pays to read and research.

boi.. i guess ur screwed then.. well there was a method to reset the unlock code to anything u want but u gotta search for it yourself in the forums here......dunno if that worked out for anyone....
also try searching the forums.....the nvdata.bin file i guess doesnt get deleted but the place where the unlock code is written gets filled with buffer values...
again, i guess i read somewhere there is a method to get past that but even that only worked out for some....
i could search the forums for ya, but im in office an cant do so now....
just keep on searching in the forums...ull surely find the solution....
also, this is what ive read only in some forums that people pay around $25 to get their cell phones unlocked by giving their IMEI number or sumthng of that sort......am not from the USA so really have no clue about it.....

Follow the One-Click Unlock guide

One way the unlock code could have gone missing is if the owner of the Captivate flashed to the leaked Froyo build and back to stock. As it is a leaked build it couldn't have been automatic afaik.
mine is a JH7 phone and i got the unlock code =D. at first i couldnt find it by the PC method. it wouldnt work. it gave me an error sagint the nv_file.bin wasnt there. and i searched for it and it wasnt. i thought i was screwed so factory reset, then i rooted my phone, enable sideloading using unleash the beast. After all that, i went to android market and search for "froyo" and supprisingly i found a unlocker that worked. (looks like a padlock perhaps 5th in the list) i installed it and ran it, IT FOUND IT!!! was so happy since im not even in USA and i can use it on any provider =D

I don't think it will get a signal on Tmo's 3G system, so why would you want to use it on Tmo's edge anyways?

You are correct. T-Mo's 3G frequency is different from AT&T's. T-Mo uses the 1700/2100Mhz range for their 3G while AT&T uses the 850/1900Mhz range. The only frequency range the companies share is the 900Mhz band which is 2G

I dont get at&t 3g or Tmobile 3g where i live
I bought SGS from 2nd hand for my girlfriend. Seller said that phone is locked for Virgin (UK). I successfully removed simlock from my SGS (O2) before so i thougt that shouldn't be a problem for me now. But it is.
I checked with *#7465625# that simlock and all other locks are OFF (before i used phone with SIM). When I put any other SIMs than Virgin I get "Emergency calls only" message. Virgin SIM cards work perfect.
I tried remove lock (but there is no lock ???) with all methods from this forum and still have no reception with non Virgin SIM. I checkd 2.1, 2.2.1, and 2.3.4 stock roms and is same.
How I can resolve my problem?
Its possible if u have been using Odin that you have changed the CSC file, which is the modem, which receives signal. Does Virgin receive a signal ?
Yes, Virgin recive signal. Problem was before I flash any rom by odin.
I can see signal bars when non virgin but can't make call. Only emergency.
Maybe I can use some files from my unlocked and working mobile?
Ok, go here http://www.samfirmware.com/apps/profile/76570387/
You will need to register free, and you will loose root but thats easy sorted, download the latest 2.2 for the i9000 and flash it with Odin. Let me know if it helps, and be carefull with Odin, read all instructions carefully. Though i think the 2.2 is just one file, there for it goes into PDA in Odin.
You may also be sim-locked again, im unsure and im no expert at this. Or theres another site that helped me out. http://www.theandroidsoul.com/xxjvp-android-2-3-4-firmware-galaxy-s-install-and-download/
Then go here to root http://www.theandroidsoul.com/root-xxjvp-firmware/
Let me know how u get on

I try to use few firmwares but it not change anything. I think that might be problem with nv_data.bin file. In my opinion someone try remove lock, failed, forgot to backup file and sold mobile to 2nd hand shop.
I have another full working sgs. Maybe I can copy some files and/or edit in hex editor?
Edit
Maybe someone can share me his nv_data.bin from locked or unlocked Virgin mobile please?
Sorry about link, but thats the site for the official firmwares from Samsung. I cant help you with copying files man, I know nothing about it.
sadly I dont have backup of the files before flashing
I can access data, but I cannot make\ receive phone calls or messages.
please help as this is my only phone?
not sure if I can revert to an older rom, and which one to pick up.
I got mine on orange UK.
Are you saying that you don't know your IMEI?
1. check your invoice when you ordered the device (mine stated my IMEI).
2. login to orange uk website to manage your account and surf around, my IMEI was also listed in there
Or that you don't know how to change it?
1. What ROM are you running?
2. There is a secret code you can type into your dialer which will simultaneously do a factory reset and change your IMEI. Search the forums for this.
I remember reading somewhere on here that if you flash back to FroYo it will reinstate your IMEI number.
Perhaps use JPU 2.2.1
Hope it helps ;-)
flash with odin and done
Sent from my GT-I9000 using Tapatalk
thanks for all your help.
I kept searching really desperatly to find if I kept a backup of
nv_data.bin
and indeed I did! so now I got it restored
however since upgrading to ICS, I cannot use my o2 sim card is there anyway to unlock the phone on ICS?

Hi,
I have a Samsung Captivate that I am trying to unlock. Its out of contract with AT&T and so I called them to get the unlock code. They provided the unlock code. I have a non-AT&T sim card from an overseas trip few years back. I insert this sim card and restart the phone and it asks me to enter the unlock code but am unable to unlock with this code - keep getting "unlock request unsuccessful".
I also got the unlock code for my wife's Captivate from AT&T. Using the same non-AT&T sim card in her phone, when I entered the unlock code provided, I was able to unlock her phone successfully.
Additional info if it helps:
1. My phone is running the official Gingerbread from Samsung whereas my wife's phone is running the original Eclair (with the one OTA update that was initially provided by AT&T).
2. I had rooted both phones when both were running Eclair. However, I lost root access on my phone when upgraded to Gingerbread whereas her phone still has root access. I have not rooted my phone since upgrading to Gingerbread.
3. When I had rooted both phones on Eclair, I had come across a method to inspect the efs/nv_data.bin file manually on this forum to get the unlock code:
Code:
su
busybox grep -E "^[0-9]{8}$" /efs/nv_data.bin
The unlock codes retrieved with above method for both phones are the same as those provided by AT&T recently.
Question is why I am unable to unlock my phone whereas we didnt have any problems unlocking my wife's phone. Would upgrading to the official Gingerbread ROM (non-rooted) from Samsung have anything to do with it?
I had read somewhere that Samsung had encrypted something (bootloader?) with the Gingerbread update for the Captivate that prevented it from being rooted the same way that the Captivate could be rooted with Eclair. Could this be related to why I am unable to unlock my device?
Another thought is whether I would need a different unlock code that works with Gingerbread? I am thinking this is unlikely as my undertanding is that the unlock code is determined by the IMEI number and not the ROM?
Anyway, would appreciate any help/feedback on what I can do to unlock my phone.
Thanks,
-Topper
P.S. Since I tried multiple times to unlock the device unsuccessfully (by entering non-AT&T sim, trying with #7465625*638* code, etc), it shows that I only have one try left to try and unlock the phone.
There are many threads where they describe how to unlock Captivate using manual method i.e. hex editing nv_data.bin file in /efs folder of your phone.
You have to root your phone first if not done so already. Also back up your efs folder on your sdcard and/or your PC. This is a very important step. If you mess up your efs in future(for any reason like while flashing a rom or whatever), you can always restore this folder from your back up. Also back up another copy after you're successful with unlocking that way you can go back to original efs or the unlocked one.
You may use the instructions in this thread to unlock it even though it's for SGS III:

Thanks! I had subscribed to the original thread here but had forgotten all about it. Rooted my phone (still gingerbread) per another thread, unlocked manually as per above thread & confirmed by putting T-Mobile Sim card that both phones work as expected. Glad to see the manual process above still works on sgs iii - so maybe it will work on the exhilarate too.
