OK, so if you've been wondering how to use that nifty USB Tethering features, look no further.
I searched around a bit and couldn't find a solution. Somehow, the answer landed right where you'd expect.....Google. Don't ask how I couldn't find it, but I couldn't.
Anyway, this is to save anyone else who's had trouble finding it the hassle.
====================================
==========HOW TO USB TETHER=========
====================================
Windows XP contains the drivers you need to take advantage of USB tethering, but you must install a configuration file before connecting your phone to your Windows XP computer, to instruct Windows XP how to configure itself to use those drivers.
1. Download the following configuration file (tetherxp.inf) to your Windows XP computer. Typically, you can right click on the link and choose "Save As". (If your browser appends .html to the file name, you will need to edit the name to remove the .html extension.)
2. Use the USB cable that came with your phone to connect your phone to your computer.
3. On the Android phone, press Home, press Menu, and touch Settings to open the Settings application.
4. Touch Wireless & networks > Tethering & portable hotspot.
5. Check USB tethering.
6. When Windows XP’s New Hardware Wizard opens, select No, not at this time and click Next.
7. Select Install from a list or specific location and click Next.
8. Click Browse to browse to the directory where you installed the configuration file you downloaded in Step 1 and click Next. Windows XP uses the configuration file to configure itself to support USB tethering with the Android phone.
9. When Windows XP finishes installing the software for Android USB Ethernet/RNDIS, click Finish.
You can now use the new Windows XP local area network connection provided by your phone via USB tethering. For more information about configuring networks in Windows XP, see the documentation that comes with Windows.

USB Tethering emulates USB network card for the computer, and requires RNDIS drivers, if I remember correctly - also the reason why it can't be used on Macs.

I appreciate your response but...that doesn't explain much. I know it emulate USB network card but I'm not sure what I need to download? I'm assuming someone has used USB Tethering before so they must know what is required.
For anyone wondering how to do it, I found the solution. I'll update the OP to reflect that.
Thanks.
Thanks uoY_redruM.
This made it so easy, found this page after 5 minutes of googling.
Wonder why i didn't start searching on here for an answer...

Ok, not sure if this has been discussed here before or not but I thought I would post again as I have just found this out.
On Windows based Treos there is a program that lets you change the USB connection from RNDIS to Serial. The program is called USB Switch. I don't have the file anymore as I am an idiot and deleted it from my computer and my memory card had to be formated, which of course I didn't back up. In any case if you search google for USB Switch you can find a cab file that works with WM5. So if you are having trouble connection to your computer with ActiveSync and have tried any of the various solutions around the web without any luck this is the app. for you. Give it whirl, see how fast your computer recognizes your device.
Happy syncing!!
Folks, when I attach my Kaiser (MDA Vario III) to my laptop using Bluetooth, I can sync without a hitch... However, when I caonnect it via USB, I get the following: [see screenshot attached]
Any ideas? I can't fins any info on t'web?
Right... Had my Tytn (SPV M3100) replaced by Orange. This now does the EXACT same thing. Vista SP1, methinks...
Make sure you have the latest Windows Mobile Device Center installed and while your kaiser is plugged in run windows update and see if there are any driver updates available.
Try killing mobsync.exe in task manager (on the desktop pc). Then restart WMDC.
or plug in the usb, then open windows update and check for updates, it will detect it hasnt got the relivent drivers and downloadn them for you. normall its supposed to do it automatically if it doesnt find the drivers but for some reason it didnt work
Thanks sofar...
But I've tried all of the above.... To death. It works fine with my Athena & my Tytn, not with the Kaiser though...
I've been having the same problem. Thought it was one of the roms I had cooked initially but then I tried a few more roms (Duttys was one) and I still couldnt sync. Either on WMDC in Vista or ActiveSync on XP.
Now I think the USB is damaged - although it still charges fine. Bluetooth sync is fine too.
Now, i don't sync my device at work on my vista machine, but i can still connect to it.
None the less, I was looking at my windows update history and when i first installed the mobile center or whatever, i downloaded an update that is listed as failing to install in y windows update history.. so.. id ont know why it fails.. but yeah..
Had the same problem, but seems to be OK now.
I followed the help file in the Mobile device center -troubleshooting a cable connection. I post it her for reference. Don't know exactly what solved the issue (I hope permanently) but possibly the firewall ports?:
-----------------------
Check the device for relevant system messages and address any conditions affecting the connection.
Ensure that the device and the PC both have USB connections enabled:
In Control Panel set to Classic View, open Windows Mobile Device Center. Select the Allow USB connections check box.
In ActiveSync on your device, click Menu > Connections, then select the Synchronize all PCs using this connection check box.
Disconnect and reconnect the device.
Disconnect, restart, and reconnect the device.
Disconnect the device, restart the PC, then reconnect the device.
Do the following:
Disconnect the device.
Open the following ports for all programs in the PC firewall:
990: open inbound TCP port
999: open inbound TCP port
5678: open inbound TCP port
5679: open outbound UDP port
5721: open inbound TCP port
26675: open inbound TCP port
Reconnect the device.
Do the following:
Disconnect the device.
Disable the antivirus program.
Reconnect the device.
Do the following:
Disconnect the device.
Open Network Connections in Control Panel on the PC.
Right-click the local area connection created by Windows Mobile Device Center, then click Properties.
In This connection uses the following items, select every check box (to select all protocols).
Reconnect the device
fixed for me
I was having this problem. I'd also noticed that windows update was having problems installing a related update 'windows mobile remote adapter'.
Followed the advice in the help file re opening ports in the firewall. (FYI when adding a port just type the port number in the name field and in the port field).
It still wasn't working but when I did windows update after opening the ports it worked and is now connected.
Hope this helps

Try this, it worked for me.
Go to start<<settings<<connections tab. Then select the USB to PC icon. Uncheck enable advanced network functionality. Restart PPC and then try to re-sync.
I don't even know what enable advanced network functionality does. When unchecked, I see "connecting to host" everytime I cradle my Tilt. AND I never have sync problems, nor do I get the error message alluding to changes on the server and all changes will be lost.
hi, will some one please show me how to set it up, i did tried few times but it wont connect, thanks
Do you have bluetooth networking enabled in your PC?
im actually having problems with this 2 ever since i upgraded to duttys v3 and now v4 same problem it used to work perfectly it just says something like connection couldnt be established check your device documentation.... did you have it working earlier to tongphan?

If your laptop or Desktop computer is Bluetooth enabled (like mine) then you do not require an adaptor. If your laptop or desktop is not Bluetooth enabled, then you do need a Bluetooth adapter. They cost from about £10/ $20
With my MDA Vario III and my Bluetooth enabled laptop, this is how I connect to the internet on my Windows Vista laptop by sharing the internet from my device:
1) Turn Bluetooth on and also turn on the visibility on your device
2) Now on your laptop/pc (please keep in my mind I’m describing how to set up using a vista laptop), click on ‘My Networks’.
3) Next, click onto ‘network and sharing centre
4) Click onto ‘setup a connection or network’
5) Click onto ‘connect to a Bluetooth personal area network (PAN) and then click ‘next’
6) Click ‘Add’
7) A screen will pop up with a box that needs to be ticked. Tick it and then click next
8) A torch light animation appears as the computer searches for the device
9) A device name such as ‘MDA Vario III’ or similar should appear. Click on it and then onto next
10) A passkey screen appears asking if you want to add a password for whenever you connect your device. Choose which option you want. If you don’t want to create a password, then simply click on ‘don’t use a passkey’
11) Click on next
12) On your device, a sign appears asking if you want to connect to your pc/laptop. Click on yes
13) Then type in the passkey you’ve created (if you have one) in the passcode box which should have appeared on your device. Click on ‘next’.
14) Click on Finish
15) On your device, click on programs and then onto ‘ internet sharing’
16) Now if you want to internet share by Bluetooth, under ‘PC Conection’, click on ‘Bluetooth PAN’.
If you want to connect by USB cable, then connect your device to your PC/ Laptop with your cable. Under PC connection, click on USB.
17) Then click on ‘connect’.
18) On your computer/laptop, click on ‘My network’ and then right clik onto ‘Manage network connections’ and ‘View Bluetooth network devices’.
19) Click on your device name and ‘connect’
Although I also own a XP computer, it’s currently not working so I can’t give a step by step guide on how to connect using XP. I do think the methods are pretty similar though.
hey man thanks for the help but before i came back her i figured out what my problem was and i was retarted i forgot to pair the device after i installed a new rom... lol my bad
I browse the Internet on my laptop using to the GPRS/EDGE connection of my network provider and Internet Connection Sharing on my Kaiser.
I have been trying hard to establish a Dial Up Networking using either a Bluetooth or USB but with no success.
Bluetooth:
1. I make my laptop Bluetooth enable by using a BlueTooth dongle.
2. Pair the Kaiser and Laptop.
3. On my Kaiser, I cant see any service listed.
4. Though i can see that Win XP did detect a Bluetooth Modem and it installed it. When i "Query Modem" in my Control Panel for the BT modem, it does successfully query it.
5. I create a new Dial up connection and use this modem, however it never starts to connect to the GPRS.
I do have a Sony Ericsson T610, where i do exactly the same thing and the internet works like a charm.
Please can somebody explain me step by step process how to achieve this. I have read 100's of forums and imported many registry keys but it simply doesnt work. The same was the case with my Hermes(TMobile Vario II).
The ROM details are in my signature.
Thanks in advance.
Activesync?
last time i tried this, i used a USB cable and activesync was installed on my pc...it worked like a charm and the steps are oh-so-easy!!!
using a USB cable, follow these steps:
1. ensure the applications on your phone (web browsers, weather applications, etc) can use your data connection (edge/gprs) just fine
2. on your pc, you have to have either activesync installed (if you have windows xp) or windows device center (if you have windows vista)...i have only tried this with activesync so can't guide you further regarding vista
3. sync your phone and pc with activesync...just plugging in the USB cable on your phone and pc will usually get activesync going
4. on your phone, go to "Settings->Connections->Comm Manager" and hit the "Internet Sharing" button...a configuration page will open...select "USB" under "PC Connection" and whatever your data connection name is on your phone under "Network Connection"
5. hit connect!
now on your pc, check if the internet applications are working!
Note: it helps to disable ALL OTHER network interfaces on your pc from Device Manager

I dont want with Internet Connection Sharing. I want to use with Bluetooth Dial-up networking. Why? The reason is that with ICS, my screen glows permanently(even at the lowest bright option) and eats the battery. BT the screen will go off and still be connected.
True true...BUT!

that makes sense...BUT...the phone charges when it is connected to USB so Internet Connection Sharing worked well for me on my DESKTOP...but you have a laptop so it wouldn't make much sense in the long term to have your phone charge off your laptop's battery when you're on the go! i see your point!
I've searched and searched, and I hope that someone has figured this out.
Has anyone tethered their Captivate to a Mac? USB tether only please. I know of Wifi tethering, but I like to enjoy my battery when I am done with my laptop.
I have it working in WinXP with Kies, but I would like to get it working on my Mac.
Thanks
Unfortunately, my snow leopard device is DOA right now, so I can't test it, but I think it should be as simple as plugging it in through USB when you have "PC Internet" chosen as your USB settings. I know it works instantly on Linux (without any drivers) and on windows with the drivers installed.
According to most references, a mac doesn't require any sort of "drivers" or kexts to get our phone compatible with it, so I would suggest just plugging it in and disabling your other connections to check
no go, it finds it as a modem, but won't connect... I found something online that said to add settings here and there, but it still isn't working...
Yes, it works on my Mac computer. Either you can configure it with complicated settings without any other software, or you can use PDAnet. You can get it on the market but it is censored by AT&T so you will need market enabler or be in airport mode with the wifi on
