Hey,
I have a previously rooted nexus one. It is 2.2.1. It was on cm then I used rom manager to put it back to factory settings. Now I want to root and mod again. What is the easyest way.
I am not really that experienced so go easy on me.
Or should I wait for gingerbread.
So what should I do. Go for cyanogenmod or Gingerbread???

I think currently Cyanogenmod is more stable than Gingerbread releases, so I'd suggest you to go for CM.
Here's a complete guide to installation of Cyanogenmod

No I am actually asking if I should go with cyanogenmod or THE OFFICIAL 2.3 GINGERBREAD

Cyanogenmod.
If you install 'official gingerbread' its just going to feel like froyo, no major differences. If you wait for CM you'll have way more perks

You didn't explicitly say that in your first post, so don't shout.
A stable/final Gingerbread could be weeks off yet, so unless you're willing to wait, then go with CM.
Also, should be in the Q&A section, not dev.
I was not shouting but sorry anyways. And thanks. I will wait for. 2.3 first. Then if any thing ill root it after.
MOD EDIT: The OP has 6 similar threads open, so closing this for now.

Pretty sure cyanogenmod is still in early beta testing, so it's definitely not a rom for everyday usage.. maybe check back in a few months or so?
Cm did release a beta for their v6 but have now stopped working on it. They have turned their attention towards getting gingerbread on our phone. I think cm7.

Hi,
I am on 2.1 jh7 rooted and unlocked, need advice should I go to 2.2 or 2.3? Going directly to 2.3 is ok?
Thanks in advance, noob here, couple of weeks only on android/captivate. Loving it though.

You can go directly to gingerbread from eclair. Just follow the instructions and you'll be ok.
Thanks for the response. Can you point me to a thread. There is so much information out there I am not sure which approach to take....noob anxiety.
Thanks

Stock gingerbread
Thanks. Just a last couple of questions.
1. Should I go to 2.2 first and then go 2.3.3 as it seems as per the thread it is i9000 rom and not primarily for captivate?
2. Would the phone remain unlocked on gb? Or i need to finf a fix after the uphrade? Again sounding repetetive, in view of unlock 2.2 or 2.3?
Appreciate your help and patience ;-). Kinda scary meddling with the rom and stuff on my new phn but still will probably.

1.no need to go to 2.2 going to gb will overwrite the current os.
2.the phone should remain unlocked after the flash.
True the gb is originally for the I9000 but it has been rewritten to work on the captivate.
Just make sure you read and understand what's taking place and the risks involved, because you can end up very unhappy.

You need to be on Gingerbread first before you can flash your phone with an ICS ROM. The following web site gives an easy step by step tutorial plus download links to get ICS on your SGS.
http://www.theandroidsoul.com/android-4-0-4-rom-galaxy-s/
Ray.
or get 2.3.x updated from kies , than root it and then do cyan9 , its best. worked like charm. just read the instructions and follow it.
Kies says am upto date with latest software can i get gingerbread without kies?

You can update your device till 2.3.6.
Unfortunatelly I only have a german page with the explanation.
Actual firmware you find here for example: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1570488
I think in this thread the users could help you.
Yes, using the Odin. Look here:
w*w*w.theandroidsoul.com/galaxy-s-gets-android-4-0-based-aokp-rom/
For install ICS, you need first install a GB 2.3.6 rooted, look here :
w*w*w.theandroidsoul.com/xxjvu/
end enjoy.
Atencion, take very carefull in this journey. Read all with very carefull.
Sorry for my poor english.
BEWARE: You are coming from Froyo - so you have to flash an android version that includes a socalled "bootloader" (some versions don't include that, as far as I know).
Reed carefully first before flashing.
Thanks guys I did it through Odin now on 4.0 whoooooo lol

Okay so my friend has a Samsung captivate. He is on 2.2 and I would really like to help him root and install cwm and a stable cm9 build. I see a lot of one click methods but I'm not particularly sure which one to use... I have an s3 which to me seemed easier to root and install cwm. All this eclair, froyo, and gb things are hurting my head. And just driving me in circles. But if I had some direction it would be appreciated. I just want to know what I need to do to get ,root, cwm, and cm9 thanks ahead of time!

I don't claim to know everything but I do know this. Being that he is on 2.2 you will have to flash to gingerbread first and make sure whatever you flash has bootloaders included otherwise you will have a bricked phone at some point along your way to CM9.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1300843
Go to that link and it will give you several one click options to get you to a variety of stock GB roms. Also for your intitial root there are several one click applications available that will get you fixed up you should just have to google them.
Yeah I'm used to having to flash new firmware, flashing cwm again then new Rom.that was on my old sensation. But thanks I will tell him to update to gingerbread via kies.then I will flash a custom kernel via Odin then just update to cm9
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2
Stickies also have some good instructions.
Okay so he just upgraded to 2.3.5 so am I going to need to install boot loader as well? or am I just going to use the one click tool
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2
If he is on 2.3.5 GB already, root the phone and flash a corn kernel so he will have a working CWM
If he has kk4 gb 2.3.5, then he has the gb bootloaders. So all u need is to flash a kernel with cwm and then the Rom of ur choice copied to ur internal sd and u will be good to go. So see this... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=19425513&postcount=1

So even though they are gingerbread boot loaders, I can still flash an ics Rom?
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2
^ Yep... And each Rom should have it's own install instructions and requirements in their OP as well.
(hit thx button by accident, but oh well ... )

Yes GB bootloaders are the requirement and are even backwards compatible. You should be able to install anything from Eclair to Jelly Bean now without problem. But as the previous response states make sure you follow the directions for whatever rom you are using so you are less likely to run into issues.
Yeah I just ran into problem after problem tonight. Finally got cm9 installed and his imei for changed. I am running into every speed bump possible with this phone
