This problem has annoyed me for way to long, so i'll pay $50 USD to anyone who can help me.
No matter what i do, i cannot get screen/auto rotation to work properly on any ICS rom. It will stay portrait mode no matter what. Auto-rotation works fine on any Froyo/Gingerbread rom i use. Flashed every ICS rom available. I've tried the following:
1. Turning on auto-rotation in Settings>Display
2. Toggling auto-rotate in Settings>Display while the phone is turned landscape
3. Toggling notification widget orientation icon
4. Reflashing/Wiping everything/flashing and wiping (don't get me started)
The only app that actually rotates for me is Camera.
Accelerometer Values app from market tells me everything is fine.
wow dude i don't really know what to say. I did try team icssgs's RC3.1 a while back and everything worked great. Actually, i can even say i was rather impressed on how ICS handled screen rotation. Had that turning iphone-like effect and worked every single time perfectly, no matter what i was running, as long as it was enabled on settings.
Any chance you might have some app interfering with screen rotation? like some toggle widget or something?
Wish you good luck mate

nope happens on any newly flashed fresh ICS rom
Lol, I'm very doubtful that my solution will work, but if you're desperate enough you can try and who knows, I might win 50 bucks
First answer me this: On your last Gingerbread Rom, you had the ability to turn off all animations in the Settings -> Display menu.
Did you turn off all animations?? If yes, read my solution. If no, stop reading here
So, you answered yes. Here's my proposal:
1. Flash a Gingerbread ROM again. Turn ON all animations.
2. Flash your desired ICS ROM

on gingerbread, i would always turn on all animations
but that wouldnt do anything since flashing a new rom wipes everything
What launcher are u using?
Howdy!
On ICSSGS 4.2 and Semaphore 9.0 the turning works fine for me. That is in apps that support it. The launcher for instance doesnt - the clock does.
You could try installing the ES Task Manager and check whether the turning is on there. Also you could check appropriate apps for your Kernel/Rom -- sometimes you can turn stuff on and off there, as well.

I'm on THS Experimental Build, but Build 16 should be the same.
1. You didn't mention this, but Settings > Launcher > General > Auto-Rotate Screen
This is using Trebuchet Launcher, but it should be similar on any other ICS Launcher, under the Settings "Interface" list.

Likely its because of the changes in windoworientationlistener.Java its been changed to absolute values so now you have rotation_angles instead of rotation_mode where sensor libs would return 2 3 4 5 depending on degrees 0 90 180 270 now it looks for actual degrees rotationinstead of numbered modes
try ics slim. Settings -ASS - General UI - set rotation delay. and ofcourse set on the rotation.

I have the exact same problem. I have tried everything I found on these forums and still no resolve. I use semaphore kernel 1.0.0 and ICS Slim rom on a samsung galaxy s phone. I can see the explination for our problem but what is the solution ? How can we correct those variables ? Thank you in advance !

I wish I had tried some games... all I can say for certain is that it works in the camera app and sensor test apps like GPS Status. So it seems like it comes down to the system UI not interpreting the sensor readings correctly.

I suggest you try it out with some games too.. coz if it's a rom issue, it can't be with every rom..
Even the games don't directly access the accelerometer.. Goes through the kernel which controls the hardware.. If it works in games, should work in the roms which have accelerometer working fine..
This annoyed me for a while... It worked fine on THS ROM with Trebuchet launcher. I switched to AOKP, and couldn't get it to work, tried a few others that all failed. After a couple of months, I'm back to CM9 on nightlies (with Semaphore 1.2.0) and rotation works perfectly, couldn't be happier.
Maybe try CM9?

Confirmed the accelerometer DOES work in games.
So it works in the camera and 3rd party apps like sensor tests and games. Does not work in any launcher, the stock browser, gallery, or other system apps.
Also tried the the latest Team Nyx release - not working there either. I've tried the latest CM9, ICS333, AOKP... it doesn't work in any of them.
Hi,
I have noticed the default camera app sets the display brightness to full when loaded. It's irritating since the picture you see on the display when taking the picture is different from when you view it in the gallery.
So I installed Quicksnap and noticed it does the same.
So, do ALL the camera apps do this or is there some way to stop it happening?
Thanks all,
Oobly

you might want to check the outdoor visibility in the settings of the camera
That's with outdoor visibility off. With it set to on it goes even brighter and oversaturates the colours. Anyone else got some feedback on this?
Thank you.
Well, from scratching around in the ROM and looking at kernel source code it looks like the mDNIe settings are to blame. There are different profiles for different display tasks and the camera ones seem to be setting the brightness up. Will play around with the files associated with each profile, maybe I can fix it meself.
so this worked fine for the first few days- the bit where you get to tap on areas you want the focus to be on (and blur everything else)
usually the aperture circle appears and then you can slide up and down to adjust the f-stop to widen the area that gets blurred.
all of a sudden, the circle no longer sticks so I'm unable to adjust the aperture.
things I've tried but to no avail:
clearing Gallery app data
clearing camera app data
reboot
turn off and then turn on
anyone have this issue please feel free to chime in and find a solution together
Do you have this issue only in the aperture mode or also in the regular camera mode? Meaning do you get the brightness slider wenn tapping for focus in regular camera mode?
Working fine for me Btw.

Hm can't find any setting that would affect that. There is a "restore default" button in the camera settings, have you tried that?
I guess the only other thing I can come up with at this time is a full factory reset

hmm nah I've already deleted data for both cam and gallery apps.. that should work better than reset defaults. it's strange, as though both sliders are the same thing across both apps.

OK so I worked backwards.. quite painfully.. on all the changes I made over the past few days and I worked out what was causing the issue.
It was a problem that I created for myself really.. but one that was totally unexpected and I'm sure is a bug.
I changed all UI animation to None in developer settings to get around quicker and it was the Window Animation that did it. changed it back to .5x and both the camera brightness slider as well as the aperture slider returned.
strange but true.
anyway, SOLVED.
Thanks for posting the solution. Haven't got my P9 yet but I usually turn off Window Animation as well. I can see how they are related but it really shouldn't affect the camera app functionality. Definitely a bug imo.

Hi man,
I tried to do it, but it doesn't work for me. I also had all the UI animations deactivated, and even though I turned them on individually, and simultaneously, nothing happened. The thing is that I do have aperture slider and the camera brightness one, but when i take the shot on wide aperture mode, and open the gallery the wide aperture icon doesn't appear.
Thanks anyway.

I think my problem is not related with the animations and UI tweaks that we can turn off from the developer settings (because i have the sliders working properly). The thing is that... is like the WAM (wide aperture mode) is there on the camera, you can use it, but it really doesn't take any effect on the photo....like a preview mode...nothing else.... I know is weird. But if I go to the gallery, and open the photo that I supposelly took with the WAM, the little icon to change the value is not there. It is a normal photo.

like message,contacts,fb,chrome etc.
I'm having the same problem. My screen brightness autodims to zero randomly when I am using Google Chrome. I hope it can be fixed if it's a UI bug.

hello,
it seems that you need to disable any power saving settings
disable the power genius app if you have it
or use 3rd party app like lux lite
those are the solutions i found so far
if they would release an update soon, maybe they will fix this issue
good luck
Same problem here... Kinda retarded
Sent from my VTR-L29 using XDA-Developers Legacy app
It seems that I have found a solution.
I noticed that (im my case) the screen dims every time when the keyboard pops up, so I have uninstalled google and swift keyboard updates and installed a different keyboard.
No problems with brightness since I done that, so give it a try.
Also, the screen brightness was not reducing when it was on maximum (with auto brightness off ofcourse).
Just got my mi A2 - love it. but noticing big issues with regular video recording - I am seeing this pulse or pop often once per second - a pulsing on all my videos - not sure if it is the auto focus or what. It is a regular endless pulsing on all videos where slow closeups show it the best. Looks like a defect and I would return. Or suggestions of how to fix?
See videos of what it looks like:

is there a setting that can help here - or is it a defect. ( bad autofocus)
anyone seen this problem - should I return it?

Looks like a problem with either the cameras or the software. I'd probably RMA it.
I have the same Problem.
I have the same problem. It's an issue with the autofocus. It's searching for something to focus on and it does that. It can probably be fixed with a software update.
Does everyone have this problem - or just a bunch of us? Is there a way to force the autofocus to turn off for certain shots? This is a deal breaker for me as I do allot of closeup work with nature.

I'm hoping the October update fixes it.
Can anyone using a camera mod - like gcam, let us know if there same autofocus pulsing happens on those apps?

In bright daylight i dont have this pulsing Problem.
But in Darkness with synthetic Lights on it happens.
gcam, same Problem. You need an Videoapp with "Autofocus Lock"
Same issue here with low light indoor shoots.
did the new update fix this issue ( raining here - hard to test) - or does anyone know of a autofocus lock app or technique to get around it.

I use the "open camera" app, which is free and lets you block the focus.

how do you block focus on open camera - do not see option. am i missing it.
yes - open camera app - does work. in that it has a focus lock. How do we let Xiaomi know about this problem it it can be fixed (is there a offical way)?
open camera app
I did find how to do it: (https://opencamera.sourceforge.io/help.html)
Focus - Controls the focusing method used. Available options depend on your device. These may include:
Continuous focus iconContinuous (default) - The camera focuses continuously. This is generally the best mode - the preview will usually always be in focus, and taking photos is quick when the preview is already in focus. Note that you can still manually focus by touching the screen.
Auto focus iconAuto - The camera focuses when you take a photo, or when you touch to focus.
Infinity focus iconInfinity - The camera focus will be fixed for objects far away.
Macro focus iconMacro - This behaves similarly to auto focus, but is optimised for close-up objects.
Locked focus iconLocked - The camera does not focus, unless you manually touch to focus.
Manual focus iconManual - A slider appears allowing you to manually control the focus distance (only available if Camera2 API is used).
Fixed focus iconFixed - The focus remains fixed.
Fixed focus iconEDOF - Extended depth of field (EDOF). Focusing is done digitally and continuously.
Is there anyone who can confirm that issue has solved with android pie, or not.
Isue with video pulsing isn't solved with pie update. I have also made wipe data/factory reset after pie update but problem stil exist.
You can lock focus on stock camera app by holding on any spot of the screen
