[Q] Security apps. - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Are security apps like Lookout, Norton etc worth installing? Samsung already has find, lock and wipe via Samsung dive website so is an app necessary?
If it is worth getting one which is the most recommended?

I use Lookout as a safety precaution and have had no trouble with it. The mobile world is getting more dangerous, so I figure every little bit of protection helps.
If such programs aren't essential yet today...they will be tomorrow.

Is there any way to install Samsung Dive on a Custom ROM?
Can I extract the apk from SamFirmware.com?

I use LBE security and Droidwall (IPtables frontend gui). The problem is, unless you use hardcore's speedmod kernel, you can't block ipv6 in Droidwall, which is bad considering the I9000 will try connect over ipv6 first. LBE gives you a list of all apps, their required permissions and the ability to block these individual permissions.
As far as Norton goes, if their Android software is anything like it is for pc, I wouldn't touch it with a bargepole!!

the app: SeekDroid is good, you can find your device and so on(better than Samsung Dive)

Little out of topic
Got Ya is a nice app...
It clicks photo of the person who inserts the wrong password ..
Caught my Hostel warden do it.. hehehe..(Hostellers submits mobile aftr 8 oclock every night, it kind a sucks)

Phone locator pro for me, tried a lot of the others

Anti-theft questions

Hello to you as as all. I have some questions concerning the possibility of my OB being stolen. The first question is: how can I avoid my cell being booted into recovery mode without it being on?
Provided that my OB has NOVA ROM v8 installed and I can select to boot into recovery mode, (just by pressing the power button) then flash it, despite being locked. How can I prevent this? Finally, are there any anti theft utilities/applications that enhance the level of security of my device? In other words, what can I do so that a possible thief cannot do anything with my OB, including factory resetting/flashing ROMS?
Thanks in advance!

Flash the lg stock theme with the nova script's theme changer. I think then you won't have the reboot and recovery entries. I'd also like to hear about anti theft apps...
There are many Android Antitheft Apps such as:
Wheres My Droid: It only has SMS sending feature after changing SIM card.
Prey Anti-Theft: My favorite, it has GPS tracking, SMS after SIM change, SMS activation/deactivation and an Account at preyproject.com to receive reports about your stolen phone.
Android Anti Theft Application: A new app just released today but it seems good.
Thx. What about androidlost?

It has the same idea as Prey Antitheft but instead of having an account at their site (androidlost.com) to report to, They use your email to send reports to which is better since there is no limit to report number.
@miniclip22 there is only one Anti Theft app I know of that prevent (with ROOt) Hard resetting or Factory resetting. Its Name is LMaxi Anti Theft Installer. I don’t know about any app that prevent ROM flashing. But it would be nice if Moded ROMs developers add some kind of password required before flashing.

This is a cwm recovery feature. Who'll implement that?... I think it's quite a tough work.
Knzo....? Is the Force stronger enought with him to accomplish, ...even without his phone?
Edit: hey! Maybe Antonio can add a code (sim?) ask in the poweroff menu? Much more simple...
And then I'm thinkin' of some thief issues... Things with cable: pushing apks with adb, kdz flashing...
And you still have the erecovery...
Sent from my LG-P970 using XDA App
@Xadroid: you can push apks in the /system partition, and they will no more be erased by a factory reset... using root explorer for this is the easiest way: go to /data/app, "move" the apk, go to /system/app, mount r/w and paste. Reboot. Might work. Or not. Depends of the apk and the rom. Never bricked anything in my case, at least, forcloses.
CERBERUS is an excellent anti-theft sw, it has 3 ways of functioning (the first based on sms and the others using its website).
Check whether it sustains a complete wipe of the OB.

Hurray for thread necromancing :good:
Anyway. I just stepped into the android world using a Nexus 4. My girlfriend had her android stolen a few months ago and is also using a Nexus 4 now.
My first reaction was to install Prey Anti Theft on both devices so that, in the event they get lost/stolen I would have some sort of means to track them down.
However, if your thief is a bit smarter then a doorknob he'll wipe the device the first chance he gets, so your anti theft solutions go out the window.
I was wondering if there is some way to "embed" the anti-theft in the OS. So that in case of a wipe the anti theft solution will still be able to fulfill it's duty.
Odp: Anti-theft questions
Cerberus can be integrated with os, so wiping data won't delete it. And it can be accessible using dialer- app is hidden and only pressing specific number will launch it.

I recently downloaded 'lookout'. Looks promising. Using this app with anti virus scanning disabled.

All those antitheft apps have a big disadvantage: they all need the GPS and Data to be always on, so this leads to higher battery drain. In addition, you can't locate a stolen phone using GPS if it's in a building (it works only in open area)
I suggest you to keep your eyes always on the phone and keep it in your pocket and it will not get stolen.
Am I correct in assuming that only root is required, and not a custom rom?

And even then devices get stolen. My girlfriend's Galaxy Y was picked from her pocket a few months ago while she was paying in a store. Same for my brothers iPhone 2 days ago.
From what I understand, if you have root those apps can turn GPS/Data on/off by themselves and listen for an incoming SMS message or activation via the web. So at best they have a background service running.

do you believe in antivirus?

hey guys... can somebody tell me if the "antivirus" app is really working on the android phone? if yes.. what is the recommended or best antivirus.. thanks in advance..

I like dr web lite antivirus and it works for me. Sometimes i have warning about malware in new installed software.
no need antivirus.. or try lookout, avast, webroot..
Not such use of antivirus but I keep avast as it has anti theft(its available for free) which is much better then other anti theft available in playstore.

You're playing Russian roulette!! Yesterday I installed an app. I confess: an illegal download from a newsgroup. But I had a password stealing virus. Suddenly I had to fill in all my stored passwords again and I got suspicious. So I downloaded avg free antivirus. It came up with a clear warning. Had to reinstall my rom again on Samsung galaxy mini and change all my passwords. I learned my lesson: do not install obscure free apps and certainly use a virus scanner. For me AVG did the job!

What I mean is: be careful! Use a virus scanner that constantly controls everything you install and this way prevents you from installing malicious software! I know: it costs performance, but it 'pays' with safety. Doesn't really matter what scanner you're using, just use one!

Antivirus?

Do you use anything? If so, what? I'm using Avast. Good, bad, something better?
I don't use any antivirus. I don't think that it is necessary, I download once a month any well known antivirus like avast and run the virus scan. Antiviruses only consumes a lot of ram.
you just download and install app thr google play. you don't need antivirus
Viruses can infiltrate your device in many more ways than just apps from Google Play. But it is interesting nonetheless that very few see any value of having any protection.
Most studies on Android and antivirus programs have pretty much shown that they're useless. You're much more likely to have problems from permissions that are built in to legitimate apps than you are from a virus or trojan.
Andoid is basically omune to viruses becuase it is based on linux ! So u use antivirus for nothing!! It is tottaly useless and also the apps of antivirus are controlled by ram and cpu and pgone memory so if u where to het a virus your antivirus couldnt do shi*

I use Avast as well, mostly because of the free anti-theft features. I have never had much trouble, although sometimes it picks up false positives. This is usually fixed quickly.
I used to have Avast as well. But now I switch to free Chinese app called LBE Security Master, man it awesome.
kdartigliere said:
Actually you are wrong in saying that Linux is omune to viruses, it just happens that no one targets Linux since its much harder to penetrate due to tight security measures. In the last month there were 48 apps removed from the play store which were infected with malware. Of which a few had been collecting personal data for up to 6 months. I will agree though that antivirus is not of much use anyhow and it only allows down your phone tremendously. But just because your downloading from the play store does not guarantee all apps are virus free. Remember to publish an app is very easy and almost anyone could do it.

Ok, I stand corrected as you did say "basically". I was not by any means trying to put your comment down as I she with you that it is kind of pointless to have antivirus on Android. I only wanted to make others aware of the fact that just because it's the play store doesn't mean you're guaranteed safety. I would personally never run any kind antivirus on Android. Shoot first thing I do when I get a new phone is remove all the crap bloatware and minimize the heck out of my roms.

Its fine no probs, I agree that playstore is full of vulnerable apps that have permission to see all your personal stuff, thats where app store on iphone is better than android! But no antivirus can help with that. Regards

i used to use Avast also but removed it after doping some research. Personally i think that I don't need an antivirus program on mine, but that's just me. Since Android is based on Linux i think it is very safe against virus's. There are very very little Linux malware exists in the wild. Malware for Windows on the other hand is extremely common. Usually if I'm side loading an app i scan it with my computer first before i install it on my phone or tablet. Here's a link i found about Android and viruses. http://www.howtogeek.com/129896/htg-explains-does-your-android-phone-need-an-antivirus/

[app discussion] [antivirus]

I find many people having confusions about antivirus......... Many of them work quite the same way..........
Some of the FAQ's I've faced these days are....
1. Which antivirus is the best of all?
2. Some virus are detected in my pc which the app can't detect.... Is my antivirus not good enough?
3. Is the antivirus worth being "paid"?
Etc.....
That's y I decided to open this thread to help these users......
Plz post which antivirus is the best (according to u) and why.....
Sent from my GT-P3100 using XDA Premium HD app
Btw I personally use avast antivirus paid version....... Having root elevates the app by adding a firewall....... Except antivirus it has many features like call blocker, remote control, etc...
Sent from my GT-P3100 using XDA Premium HD app
I am using AVG internet security 2014(Cracked,not paid, and working with a licence to 2018),and it disables the virus before it even entered my pc over 1000 times from many sites. It is worth paying, but it isnt necessary,as you can get the pro keys for free
I use AntiVirus PRO which is AVG because ir detects all kind of malaware.
Regards
I'm using avast! Free Antivirus on my Windows computers/laptops.
On my tablet I use avast! Security. The firewall (with root) is great. I'm also using the Anti Theft feature, which you can push to /system so you can track your tablet even if the thief uses factory reset.
I am using AVG pro version..
Why??
It protects my phone and alse heps me to lock apps madhe make app backup...
Its like all in one app and i personally like it...

Restricate internet(mobile data),,built it setting!!!

Dear all,
I was wondering if we have any built in setting to totally restricate(not background data) mobile internet for few selected apps!! I used lbe security in previous xsola mobile. Since we dont have root n its kinda messy to use third party app to do these things. Since i use only mobile data need to save some data. If there is somthing like that setting kindly share with me. I would be very happy ... I saw these setting in my brothers iphone. I was so jelouse :banghead:

You could try Juice Defender Ultimate. This app has a lot of futures to handle sync and blocking on per app basis.
There's root if you really seem to need it btw.
