is there a way to restart the kies sync without having to unplug and replug the cable?
simply restarting the MBT application doesnt seem to do the trick.
I am sure i am missing some thing really obvious.
tried google and forum search but to no avail.

for the past few weeks i have not been able to connect my phone with any computer using any cord. all are either vista computers or they have active sync 4.5. at this point i have reached the conclusion that the problem lies with the phone itself. i may have deleted the whatever it is that runs the usb on the phone.
any suggestions or past experience would help. i don't really feel like spending money on a new one. it gets frustrating when many mods are done from (or at least started) on the computer, and then require my to connect my phone.
btw... i have synced the phone many times before the problem started using all the same components i am trying now.
EDIT: the battery icon shows it is charging when i plug it into a usb, but from there, i have nothing, and i have also reset memory a few times since then too.
Thanks again from a modding newb!

How are you trying to sync it? Plug it in and wait for Active to launch? Launching Active yourself and clicking connect, or from within the phone itself?
I wonder if disabaling USB charging would allow you to sync it up again.. Have you reinstalled the computer software from the CD again?
I am sure there is something you can do aside from a full phone reset...
At first, i just plugged it in, like i do every day, and wait for active to launch, but it didn't, so i opened it manually.
I tried reinstalling from the OEM disk, and also downloading directly from Microsoft (both AS 4.5).
ill poke around and see if i can disable USB charging like u suggested. thank you.
I have 64bit drivers installed, and my phone is in download mode after a disasterous attempt at flashing for the first time. The phone, when not in Download mode, flashes the AT&T logo unplugged, and an empty battery logo with a spinner in the middle.
I've read endlessly on how to proceed with the reflashing steps, but it requires that I move files to the root folder, and it requires that I enable USB Debugging. I can't enable debugging and I can't seem to get my computer to recognize the phone as a disc drive.
I don't know what to do here, but I'm desperate to get my phone back up and running. I know I screwed up, and I don't need to be reminded of things I should have done. I only want constructive advice that will allow me to use my phone again.
Thank you so much in advance for anything that might get me operational.
STOP POSTING SO MANY THREADS ABOUT THE SAME THING!!!!!
wtf
cant you keep your **** organized into one thread!?
Or just shout out things like that.
I'm resolving the topical issue in each thread and announcing it. I thought these were topical threads and that how I worked it out. But hey, thanks. I'll be sure to keep my **** together in the future.
topical..
but when you have a ton of problems that all relate to your DRIVER situation....then, um dont you think it would be best to solve your DRIVER situation? you know, that thing that would solve most of your issues??
everything you have posted about has been about your computer seeing your phone....that would be driver related. once you fix that, your computer will see your phone. its not complicated and doesnt require a different thread started for every step of your driver problem/resolution
Great, so let's keep it on this thread from now on, and stop arguing, shall we? I'm just trying to be progressive. There. I fixed the damned thing anyhow.
hey guys.. my friend bricked his phone so im here trying to help him. i used a jig and was able to get the phone into download mode, but when i plug it into my pc, it doesnt get detected by odin. the drivers are installed on the computer, because when i try plugging mine in, it detects it. i am not sure what exactly hes done to brick it but any feedback would help. without using the jig, the device does not turn on at all, so i dont even get the phone!pc or whatever the error message is, or that the battery is being charged when plugged in. thanks
If you haven't already tried it, try plugging the USB cable into a different port (preferably one that's directly on the motherboard). If necessary, also reboot the computer, start Odin first, and then connect your friend's phone.
Also, if your friend's phone was on CyanogenMod, you may need to have the Nexus drivers installed for it to register properly.
after it didnt detect his phone, i plugged mine two seconds later into the same port, without unplugging the usb cord from it, and it detected mine.. so i cant see that fixing the problem, but thanks for the advice

I see what you mean. The only reason I suggest a different USB port is that sometimes the computer you're working with can be stupidly finicky (I know this from personal experience), and you can plug in the same phone 8 times in a row - the first 7 times, nothing, and on the 8th time, it connects. It's also possible that his phone will be willing to connect to a port that's on the right side of the computer instead of the left side (or whatever other trivial thing the motherboard decides it wants). As he isn't able to do anything on his phone right now, swapping USB ports isn't going to hurt anything, and may possibly give him the connection.
I mention the drivers thing because if your phone is on an i897/i9000 rom and his was a cm7 rom (or vice versa), the computer would detect whichever one it had drivers installed for, but not necessarily the other.
Good luck either way, though.
Have you tried heimdall?

Try reinstalling the drivers. It has worked for me every time odin doesn't want to detect my phone, especially in download mode.
Try cleaning the USB plug on the phone... I cleaned mine last night, with a monitor wipe (clorox wipe type style but w/o all the acidic chemicals) and my phone is finally being detected in Heimdall on my mac. (canned air was not enough)

This is one of the most pointed solution, is possible that your phone's usb port has been damaged on some pin with the jig
thanks guys.. i will get to trying your ideas right now.. let you know how it comes..

i did try it before.. but i think im going to try it again. last time if i remember, it said it worked, but it didnt fix it.
and as for other suggestions.. when i plug the phone in, i hear the sound that the phone is detected, that quick "duh duh" notification, so the usb connection must be fine.. hopefully heimdall might help
Background:
I'm running the latest cm7 nightly. My phone randomly shut off this morning and I thought it was just another random reboot (though I'm not OC/UV'd). However, when I tried to start it up again, it showed the white AT&T logo, then quickly flashed the CM7 boot screen and (before showing the android dude) shut off.
So I thought, I'll run it through the jig tonight, and just reinstall cm7. The jig worked, the phone was in download mode, but the computer now refused to recognize the phone. Keep in mind that just this morning, I had transferred some songs to the phone, so the connection wasn't an issue (and I believe that neither was the cable).
So the question is whether I'm royally screwed or not?
Please help. I'll try to answer as quickly as possible.
(I followed the advice in this post in vain...)
You are definitely not completely screwed.

Did you try a different cable anyway? I have a cable that I use to transfer songs all the time, but it absolutely will not work in download mode. Why? I have no effing idea.
Also, which drivers are you using?
Did you install Heimdall on your comp and are trying to Odin? Have you tried other usb ports on your computer?

I'm so aggravated right now. Been trying a ton of methods, I have a jig that only puts me back at the Phone ! PC screen, can't get into download mode, the PC doesn't recognize my friggin device, I have Odin 3 (which I can't use because I can't get the PC or my Laptop to recognize the phone, and I've tried the button combos a bunch of times. I'm a pretty pc literate/tech savvy guy and I'm trying to help my friend fix his phone.
This all happened because he was doing the 2.3.5 update and it got stuck at 84%. He said it sat there for about 2 hours without progressing, so he pulled either pulled the battery, or USB or something out (I wasn't there, and I forget his explanation) and not I'm at this Phone ! PC Screen, and I'm ready to throw the phone lol. Please help me if you can, I'm really getting frustrated...
Thank you so much.
Breathe.
Go read this post and try some of the tricks in there. Technically you're in download mode. I have flashed from that screen many times. I would guess that you might want to try reinstalling the drivers. If that doesn't work, go grab one of the Heimdall one-clicks. Heimdall uses different drivers that may help get you back to stock.
Here is the post that contains the one clicks.
Good luck and remember to breathe.
First thing: Thank you for responding, and trying to help.
Secondly: I can confirm that I did reinstall the Samsung Drivers twice, but still no recognition of the USB Device... I have a stock cable, and the cable for my HTC, so I've tried both. No luck... Heimdall gives me an error basically saying that it doesn't see the device. I'll check that thread out though, and see if there is something new that maybe I haven't done/seen... (Breathing...)
I know this will sound strange, but have you tried gently wiggling the plug? It may be that the USB port on the phone is starting to go bad. That would explain the sudden loss of connectivity.

Have you tried using a different USB port?
Another thing that has worked for me is uninstalling the USB drivers then running kies and allowing it to reinstall them for you. Not sure why it worked for me but it did once.

Hey, appreciate the suggestion.
I have tried diff ports, but I'll attempt to let Kies to do it again in a few mins. Thanks
Haven't tried that, currently fixing my laptop that some stupid walk through had me do, which screwed up my laptops drivers... ugh. So at the moment, I'm performing a restore. 6 hours and counting of working on this thing... good thing he's my best friend, or I'd tell him to burn it.
(this is in response to "have you tried wiggling the plug)
I was in a similar position so out of frustration I held power, volume +/- buttons until it booted a couple times. For some reason my laptop recognized the phone after that. It may not do anything for you but it can't hurt at this point.

1 click unbrick. if I was not on my phone, I would have linked you.
