What's the best keyboard for the Nexus One?
I'm a big fan of Better Keyboard, unless you like the voice feature, but I never use that.
I'm waiting for an updated hTc_IME with voice functions.
I can't get over how awesome the voice feature is on this thing. I think that would have to be a requirement for any replacement at this point. Once you start using it, it's hard not to (especially when looking for apps in market that you had on your old G1 ).
Stock KB. Not a fan of Better Keyboard so until HTE.ime is updated for this resolution the Stock KB is gonna have to work and it seems to work pretty well.... better than the Droid at least.

Definitely not ShapeWriter. I own Better Keyboard but I think I prefer the stock Android keyboard so far. I do miss the HTC keyboard.
Android Keyboard. I've used HTC_IME, Better Keyboard, and a half-dozen others... but the stock is just faster, smoother, and works better than any other. It's still my favorite.
I really liked touchpal on my samsung galaxy but since it doesn't work currently on the N1, i really find the improvements on the stock keyboard to be good. Its just as good as better keyboard now and the voice feature makes it a easy choice to be my keyboard of choice.
If the default keyboard had the swipe actions that better keyboard has it would be fine for me. But i find those faster, i also like the customization
I like the HTC KB, but seriously... you should be able to put a SPACE when in the browser without having to go to another location.
The stock KB wins for me.
I haven't tried anything aside from stock, HTC_IME, and swype...but if swype makes one available for this, I'll probably have to do it. It's so easy to type with that thing, it's incredible. It's not exactly eye-pleasing, but I'll take speed over that anyday.
Aside from that, I just like stock.
shapewriter is now free on the market! worth a look!
I'm using the HTC-IME, and like it a lot. My only gripes are when in the browser it doesn't have a space bar in portrait mode, and it doesn't come up with some words in portrait mode. But if you input them in landscape, it saves them.

It does. Swipe down to close, swipe left/right for voice input. I like Better Keyboard's customization, but it's uglier, too big, less accurate, doesn't support multitouch the way stock does, is slower, FCs once in a while, and doesn't have voice input. That's waaaay too many drawbacks to suffer just for the sake of choosing the color.
How about Swype (something like ShapeWriter and SlideIT)?
Haven't used it but I heard good things about it
I use both ShapeWriter and TouchPal- depending on what I'm doing.
I love TouchPal's compact qwerty.
Thankfully I saved the apks' before it was pulled from the market.

I use Swype. It's amazing. I think it's such a freaking innovative app. It always surprises me how accurate it is too, I can text soooooo much faster on that.

Personally I can't get over how crap the voice function is.
It gets virtually every thing I say wrong, so I've disabled it.

Lol and me! I left it on though. must be accents.. or theres a certain way to talk to it
Voice recognition is close to useless for anything more than 1 or 2 word Google searches. I always assumed the problem was my British accent.
Swype is amazing, and it would definitely be my default keyboard if it supported landscape (it's still in beta, I know). As it is, it gives me a warning when switching to landscape or back to portrait, even in an app that is not using a keyboard. For that reason it's stock Android keyboard for me at the moment.
Ok I've downloaded apps and bought better keyboard like a retard...my phone isn't rooted and I don't play on rooting it..I just want a keyboard thats as close to the iphones as possible cause the regular android keyboard ain't up to my spec...Or something like swype I'm just looking to hear reviews on keyboards people have tried and stuck to...also have a question about handcent and Chomp which is really better?

Download one, try it for a few hours or days. Download the other, rinse and repeat as needed.
There is no 'really better' or best one - of anything!
There is only better for you, or better for me.
Personally, I send/receive 2,500-3,000+ texts per month.
I have tried both Handcent and Chomp. They both have cool features, but neither was good enough for me to keep installed for more than a day or two.
I received my N1 on Jan.08, and promptly rooted it by the 14th.
I bought BetterKeyboard last year for my G1, but the novelty of COLORS MAN on my keyboard quickly faded.
I used the HTC_IME on my N1 as soon as it was available, and now I'm rockin' the Swype Beta right now AND LOVING IT!
Best Keyboard right here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=624416
Its free and doesnt need root. Just install the HIRES version through a file manager such as astro or Linda File Manager and enable it through settings. I love this keyboard, especially after all the modifications the developer made.
hmmm, just installed. don't see a difference. rebooting now, maybe that's the deal
edit: no. long press only offers android keyboard still as only option. :/
I am a little confused. You’re asking which is the best keyboard, then you list SMS applications as the alternatives to choose from?
Keyboards:
Personally I am loving Swype, really cool! Not so good for typing out non dictionary words, but it does the job. If you don’t like the concept of Swype, HTC_IME is by far the best. Really nice looking and very easy to use!
Sms Applications:
I personally prefer Handcent SMS over both stock and chompSMS. It just has a nicer look and feel to me, and a few more customisation options. And i love the quick reply! (I only look at the threaded view when i need to look on past conversations)

You have to first go into Settings->Language And Keyboard. Then enable the keyboard that you installed.
They all have the same name as the application (Better keyboard, Swype, etc) EXCEPT HTC_IME, where it will be under Touch Input.
After you have enabled it, long press on '123?' then you can choose between the currently installed AND enabled keyboards.
Hope that helped
So I am running fresh, and I love it, 2.1 is awesome, but I can't stand the keyboard lag. Turning off optic doesn't help me that much and everything else is off. So my question is, dies anybody have tips for me to speed my phone up? Short of course of overclocking my phone? Also I love and use sense. Thanks in advance!

Some people will say use swype, some will say they don't have lag, some will say no matter what you do there will be lag, some will say "Why didn't you do a search for this"
Do a search in the forum and you will find plenty of threads with possible solutions.
I get very little lag.
Download auto killer, set it to the most aggressive setting and try it out. You can always adjust it from there.
Keeping free memory up helps a ton.

i know this is just a suggestion and ull get a ton of these but im using the original aosp keyboard with no voice to text or anything and get next to no lag. i think its the voice to text that is messing everything up. do a searcvh and find it and try it
i have found a solution to everyones problems, try this keyboard out in the market called thickbuttons it doesnt lag at all and its freakin sick
Yeah I've done the searches and tried all the fixes/ suggestions. I will try the thinkbuttons thing, but I don't like swype. Anyways, I'll look into enabling JIT on fresh, I haven't done that since I was on Darchdroid. Thanks alot! Any other tips for speeding things up? Does a2sd speed the phone up?

Only if you're SDcard is faster then the phones ROM, in which case it will make loading them faster.

on that note i have a question...How can i remove my app2sd, till i get a better chip? my hero was flying till i installed it on my stock chip. Now i need to undo, so what reformat? got to b an easier way??
I think you can make an EXT backup, but I'm not sure how to do it short of manually taking everything from /system/sd/app and moving it to /data/app

Hit up Damagecontrol 2.08.1, he included a new lighter keyboard that doesn't lag anywhere near as bad, the only real problem is the fact that the vibration feedback is sometimes messy, but I just turned it off. Otherwise it types like a dream.
Also, Damageless is customizing that latest 2.1 leak that came from Sprint, and in 2.08.1 there's DCUpdater, which allows you to update directly from the phone itself without a complete wipe. I strongly recommend it, it's got what you're looking for and more.

Sorry bro, but thick buttons has such a terrible learning curve. If you stare while typing, sure it works. But if you type faster than you can process what key gets larger, it isn't for you.
Do you have lag anytime you use the keyboard, or just when sending texts?
I know I had bad lag with the stock KB and the HTC MMS app.. but I have since switched over to the AOSP Mms.apk, and I have no lag in it at all.
Sorry to budge in, but I have had the same problem for a while now, I love the layout and prediction of the HTC keyboard (XDA) but the lag is annoying. For a while I used the AOSP mms.apk and all was well, but I couldn't send pic messages, let alone view them.
Is there a way to get around that and still have AOSP?

I use the AOSP Mms.apk on RegawMOD. Works just fine. Try repushing?
It hasnt been re-released yet, but I love TouchPal. You can still find the apk on rapidshare or hit me up and I can send it to you. You can turn off haptic feedback and make it scream and it has all the functionality of the HTC keyboard and then some.

Load up Zen's latest ROM - I kid you not - any questions?
I finally have no lag. I have no lag period even when I run pandora. I run purehero with the regular htc.ime. that was one of my main goals in finding a faster rom.

As long as you are using it on a low res screen like the hero, the attached apk should work. If you need it for something higher res like the droid, I think I have the APK at home. There are a lot of settings for this, so play around until you find a set that works. I suggest turning of the haptic feedback because that seems to slow down all keyboards on the hero.
Here is a link for swype
ok won't let me post a link
in eris>android development> [ROM]KaosFroyo V10 [06/25] [FROYO]
Page #60
Works on my Eris OTA 2.1. I don't have any idea if it works with any specific rom's at this point.
Thanks to es0tericcha0s for the link
Here you go:
Hope this works for everyone else.
Will this work if I'm getting the "trial expired" error message? Thanks.

No. Google "swype 2.4.44 hvga hacked"
You'll find the .apk file you need within the first few posts, I bet.
Good luck, soldier.
I found a copy of shapewriter that doesnt expire on their forum since my legit beta copy of swype isnt working on my 2.2 rom. It actually runs better than the 2.4 hacked version of swype that I found. It has a few differences between it and swype but I definitely like how much quicker it responds on my eris.
I found a 2.44 hvga cracked copy... It was on some other forum and it works perfect...

Is it safe to assume that these would require being rooted to work? I just did the google search, downloaded and installed...and it doesn't seem to have worked. I have swype in my settings, and I enabled it, but it does not seem to have impacted any of the e-mail or messaging apps that I have installed. I am on 2.1.
I figured it out. I needed to press down until prompted for the input method. Now its working, and I like it. It's maybe a little bit slower than me typing, but its significantly more accurate so in the end its also much faster. Muchas gracias.
Are there any fixes for using pinch to zoom with swype running? Every time I enable the swype keyboard, the multitouch capabilities crash.

Do you also have the DroidX multi-touch keyboard installed? For me, Swype and the DroidX keyboard are mutually exclusive. Having both installed at the same time makes my touch screen very unresponsive.

I have both keyboards installed. Unfortunately, I cannot (don't know how to) uninstall the DroidX keyboard since it was included in my phone's current ROM. However, I did find that once I switched to the default HTC keyboard, multi-touch support came back.

I think if you just avoid opening the multi-touch keyboard after reboot, it won't load its libraries into memory. I could be wrong though.
Why isn't Swype on the market? if its on the new phones why is it still in beta form?
i tried installing both of these apps and neither work.
is there anything out there to make em work? or is there another swype style keyboard?
i am TERRIBLE at typing. its just not at receptive of a touch screen as the ipad. but i like the android way way more.
its like i have to press harder to get a key pressed.
thanks in advance
EDIT : also love the feature to type from ultra keyboard with your voice. obviously voice search works on the tab, but im loooking to do emails and such with voice too.. possible?
thanks
Have you run the touch calibration?
i have not... ill search around for it in the menu and clockworkmod
i did the screen calibration. didnt really do anything. its just possible the screen just isnt quite as responsive if i would like.
swype or ultrakeyboard is much more important to me
thanks
It's Swype for me...
I'm a big fan of Swype. I use it on my Droid phone and cannot live without it. I also have it on my gtablet, and continue to love it, although swyping on the large screen in landscape mode takes a little getting used to. Swyping in portrait mode is much better. However, I still like it over others.
Installing Swype is not a simple thing, since the normal install apps check in with Swype headquarters, where you'll be told you are not a phone, so goodbye. And many of the apks for the app will say your screen is not the right size. But search this site, and you will find many threads on the subject, including the link to the proper apk. Basically, you will have to google for a specific version of swype, and then track it down yourself.
It is not impossible. But worth the search.
I know you didn't ask about it, but IMO thumb keyboard is the best for our g tabs

I tried this, and while I like the large keys, I don't like the fact that it takes 100% of the screen up, absolutely useless for IMS or emails or almost anything else. I want something similar to the gingerbread keyboard but with taller, more square like buttons. I've tried using the TapaTalk or whatever it is on my VeganGinger install but it doesn't work at all.

The one-touch calibration app in this subforum did not work for me, but the calibrate.ini trick (where you put a blank file named calibration.ini in the root of your microSD card and reboot) did work for me. I was stabbing at icons left and right before (especially the home soft button, ARGH!), wanting to toss the Tab out the window, but now it's as sensitive as my Evo's screen.
Swype is easy to install if you find the right file. It doesn't really work all that well on a 10" in landscape mode though. You have to move your hand around too much to make it effective.
I have been using Thumb Keyboard from the Market. I can type with only my thumbs while holding the tablet in my hands. In landscape mode it puts each side of the keyboard close to the sides so the keys are easily reachable. In portrait mode I have it set to just give me the normal full keyboard. It works great and I highly recommend checking it out. It costs a buck or 2.
My only problem with Swype, at least the version I have, is that you cannot turn off the dictionary lookup auto correct. So if the word isn't in the dictionary (websites, usernames, etc...) swype will try to autocorrect to what it thinks it should be, or pop up the guesser window with nothing even close.
Also swype uses up the whole screen for many imput windows which isn't really needed on a tablet, but whatever.
I use SlideIT 3.2, works perfectly.
i just downloaded thumb keyboard. when i go in to language and keyboard, it wont let me populate the check box, enabling it.
it gives me the lil warning, then just wont check.
any help please?

Both versions in the Marketplace say for Android 3.0...just guessing.
tried swype but using slideit
I tried swype. i got it installed, then moved to /system/app but it wouldn't work other than as a normal keyboard. tried slide-it and it works great.
