hey, I already have an expensive smartphone plan but I want all the experience of android so I am looking for a somewhat inexpensive WiFi only android powered tab with a good build quality (good specs, multitouch, at least 6-7 inches, 1ghz, you know, that stuff). I currently have a windows phone, but I used android long ago and I was wondering, is this the tab for me?
also, is the android experience good on the tab?
and another thing/ slightly off topic, if I bought apps in the amazon app store, can I download them on the samsung galaxy tab?
sorry for this barrage of questions, but I just don't know if this is the right tablet for me
The tab is the best 7inch tablet on the market hands down, i love mine to death and it goes everywhere with me besides the pub. It was my first android device, but its not that different from android phones ive used, its just wayyy better for gaming and web related stuff
Just to provide some colour (yes, that's the correct spelling of colour) to the argument:
No. Don't get one.
I also wouldnt buy one,
I just got one bbecause I only had 300€ and no cellphone, so this is my all in one device.
But it really isnt as great as I thought and if you have a gooood cellphone already a 7inch tablet wont give you much more functionality...
I thought it would be great, it is, but not really functional.
Thanks for the input. If I don't get this tablet, what tablet would you suggest (I don't have a laptop anymore so I want another mobile computing device, other than my tower) for under $500 USDollars?
Very subjective. Getting it or not depends on individual requirement. I had mine for more than 6 months now and still loving it; maybe because how I use it and suit my requirement. Lugging an 7" inch tablet with phone function everywhere is no joke. Quite heavy after a while. Well, my guess is, lugging an Ipad is also the same. And because it is my 1st Android; it just got better.

Since you already have a smartphone, get Viewsonic Gtablet and put a custom firmware on it as soon as it arrives.
I've had mine for a few months now and recently looked at the Xoom and the new Acer 10" tablets.
I don't use it for voice but use mobile data quite a lot.
After comparing I've decided to stay with the Galaxy Tab because, by far, it is the best made and (despite Samsung) developers are giving us all we need to keep the Tab great.
well, just tried out the sprint version in the store (any difference between that and wifi only in terms of the OS?) and I think that the tab is perfect in terms of hardware however, I will try out other options like that viewsonic Gtab 10 when I get the chance to.
thanks for all the input and opinions
If you just want an android experience, and don't really mind having a 3G, then Archos 70 can be a cheaper alternative. Otherwise, if you want to venture into the realm of 7" tablets and want a lot of customization or an pure eBook experience, the Nook Color will, errr, color you impressed.
Otherwise, if you want the best 7" android tablet that no other 7" android tablet can hold a candle to, then go on and get the tab.
@grammarfreak - Random thought, that's what they said too when I went to UK a year ago. The Philippines uses American English, so we say, "color" instead. Btw, do you guys spell it as, "Center" or, "Centre?"
Edit: accidentally typed 10" instead of 7" for the Nook

don't get the tab
Don't get the Tab.. Buy a B&N Nook Color and put this on it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=954902
It runs as fast as the Tab. Has WAY better XDA Development and cost 250 instead of 350.
I am regretting buying my Tab.. It's the most hostile dev forum I have seen for getting a straight answer to any question. that's not a good sign.
hmm, judging by the specs, the nook color may pay off as the better tablet (for the price) in the end except, does it have any HD output? that is important to me however, its not a deal breaker

You mean it can play 1080p without hiccups? If that's true, I'm buying
Nah nah nah.
Dont get a nook color. I had one and I sold it after a month. It was the first device that I've ever sold.
In comparison to the galaxy tab it pretty much sucks.
The mediaplaying capabilities are limited to 854•480 mp4 baseline profile.
So you have to start to convert again.
Not that I have a problem with converting, after a while of constant converting its very annoying....
The tab has overwhelming mediaplayingcapabilities. It has played absolutely EVERYTHING that I've thrown at it.
mkv, avi, xvid, mp4, mov. 1080p no problem.
I had to only convert some vids once, they where mov, the tab played them, but they didn't show up in the videoapp, so I converted them to mp4.
The tab is so cheap now. I wouldn't save those 100$ to get a nook.
If you really like the tab, you could also simply pop in the sim from your cellphone and use the tab as cellphone-replacement.
That's the way I use it, the tab is actually the first cellphone I've owned LOL.
I rather have a device that is a working jumbojet than a device that is a small plane and everyone is wanting it to be a spaceshuttle.....

Thanks, needed an opinion from someone who's had both devices.
well, I took a look at the Gtab (thx ravness for telling me) and the specs for that are amazing at an even more amazing price so I have added THAT to my list of possible tablet devices I might get.
so, does anyone have both/can tell me what the viewsonic Gtab is like compared to the galaxy tab?
and thanks for all the suggestions and, If I wasn't interested in tweaking my device(so as to make it how I want it to be) as soon as I get it, I would probably already have a galaxy tab however, Dual core 1.2Ghz processor does make the Gtab look nice (aside from the default homescreen/skin which looks and functions terribly).
I need some opinions on this topic: should I get an IPad or not.
A bit of background about me
- I am an Android user (Galaxy S)
- I do not own any nor have I ever owned an Apple device
- I would never want an Iphone
- I really want a tablet
- I live in South Africa where the ipad 2 is getting released tomorrow
- Except for the Samsung Tab P1000 there are no Android tablets available here yet
- We generally only receive devices 3-6 months after the US, so no Galaxy 10.1 until later this year
- Importing is generally not an option as this would push the price way too high
My options are:
- Buy an Ipad 2 tomorrow, sell it once the droids hit the shelves here
- Wait until June when a friend of mine travels to Europe and brings me back a XOOM for Galaxy 10.1 (if they are released by then...)
My Concerns:
- Apple sucks
- No Jailbreak for Ipad 2 as of yet
- Apple Apps are damn expensive, $9.95 for pages?!?!
- All other restrictions that come with the Ipad (yes, I know them all...)
- Resell value of the ipad 2
- No native divx/avi - COME ON!!!
What I need it for:
- browsing
- videos
- music
- reading books
Despite all this I cannot help feel that I someone want the ipad, maybe its the looks? I just really want a tablet... Now, what would YOU do?
You could get the transformer.
-10 post limit for off-topic!-
If you're wanting to sell it when Droids hit the shelves then I'd say don't buy, It's an awful lot of money to spend on something which you do not particularly want, also if your views are 'Apple Sucks' I wouldn't reccomend it at all Although a good tablet none the less.

I really want a tablet . I agree, it is a lot of money but the iPads seem to have an excellent resell value in this country. Maybe knock of 15% in 4 or 5 months. The supply is so small compared to the demand.

Possibly. Customs can be a real ***** though. Bought my Galaxy S from overseas (I think I was the first to own one locally) but it cost me an arm and a leg.
I would buy the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in a heartbeat but who knows about the release date of a 3G version. Xoom is awesome but expensive for the 3G version $$$. Plus, I am not a fan of the looks.
My fears with the iPad 2 are
- no native video playback of divx/avi and I have no nerve to convert videos every time. Not sure if players like Azul work well. VLC has been pulled of the market and since there is no jailbreak as of yet it can't be installed
- No flash
- No tab browsing, not sure if there is a DECENT browser that can sort this out
- Document editing - I refuse to pay $9.95 each for pages and numbers and google docs doesn't seem to be a real solution either
- Just transferring files, I have this feeling that I will throw the thing out the window once I realise that I cannot save an email attachment and open it in different apps (please correct me here!!!)

Got the iPad. I must say, owning a tablet is great and the screen, design and built quality of the iPad 2 is really excellent. The rest, well, it sucks. Its a great device for browsing, reading and news apps but the rest sucks. After a few days with the device I can now appreciate just how far ahead Android is.
Anyway, still was a good decision to buy as I got the experience and they ran out of stock a few days after lauch. Selling it this week, at a 25% profit

Sure you can, just not with the native Safari. I paid a buck for Atomic and couldn't be happier.
Ever thought of the Archos Internet Tablet 101?
I really like Archos
I can honestly say, I don't regret buying the Nook. For me, the Nook has been one of the first devices that I've owned in the last 10 years that just gave me this feeling of... Wow.
My first modified device was an original PSX and back then... That was a big deal, one of the first systems to ever run emulators and play videos. I felt like I was getting so much bang for my buck back then. (Not including my "Backups"... Which made it safe to protect my games )
However, now that I feel like the Nook is just such a wonderful value, I find it really hard to rationalize other purchases because of it.
I don't own a Android phone, in fact I own a wannabe smartphone called the Samsung Rogue. Was pretty excited about getting one, as I was going to get a Droid X for HDMI output (Verizon). But, now Verizon is planning on limiting data and it kind of makes the Android just look far less attractive when I already carry the Nook Color around.
Then there's the prospect of other tablets and again, I'm swayed by the thought of HDMI output and Dual Core processors. But there's very few things my Nook Color can't do, and really it just comes down to video output.
So though I love my Nook Color and feel like every new development is a reassurance in my purchase... I feel a little robbed by how awesome it is ;p.
Agreed. I bought mine off of craigslist and really enjoy tweeking it as new work becomes available. I feel so reassured to have all these devs working to put cooler stuff day after day. I really enjoy this new hobby of mine.
Can't agree more. Love it.
Ditto... I can't get enough of my Nook. Now with Netflix I am so set.
Yeah I'm surprisingly enjoying mine too. The wife is happy that I now have netflix working on it too.
I just need to see if I can adjust to using it as a reader instead of a paper book.
I like mine too. I agonized over buying it because I don't even own a cell phone and $250 seemed like a lot of money for an e-reader that I would use to occasionally surf the internet with. But it's been a lot of fun so far. I still don't use it for a fraction of the things it's capable of but it's a great e-reader, is really good for web browsing and I'm pretty much addicted to Angry Birds.
The only bummer for me is that my Nook app stopped syncing with my library for some reason, so now I have to use the Kindle app. But it works.
Nook opened my eyes to andriod. I was a die hard iphonefan. I do wish I owned a real dual core honeycomb tab now though

One extremely good reason to get an android phone: Wifi hotspot. Then you can use your NC anywhere. I have the Fascinate on VZW, unrooted but with the hotspot unlocked (extremely easy to do). And if you sign up on unlimited, they will not convert you to a limited data plan, that's just for new subscribers. I signed up for unlimited data way back when, and when they converted to the 5gb cap, mine was still unlimited and I just do a NE2 and the plan stays exactly the same. I did a NE2 when they had the 5gb limit and I stayed unlimited as it gets grandfathered in.
That being said, I've never hit 5gb anyway...
If it does stay grandfathered-in, then I may very well stay with them. I don't really think I would go over the 5gb cap normally, however... I could very well see myself on a few road trips or vacations where I would use Netflix or one of the other streaming apps =\.
yup same here.... my wife bought me the Nook as a surprise.. she was a little shocked at the price... she has the original Nook, then she saw what I was doing with the flashed Nook... and was like WOW.... this is really good... I said yea.. compared to the cost of other tablets... that is a BIG YUPPERS!!!!

Hi Guys
Im looking for a 'basic' tablet for my 8 yr old daughter for Christmas and I like the idea of the Streak 7. I appreciate that the screen resolution is not ideal for a 7" ...but will an 8 yr old care? I dont think so! Can you also tell me how good the wifi connection is.
I just need to know how well it plays Angry birds,Moshie Monster,Lego Universe and all the other kiddie games that kids adore.
Can someone give an honest opinion of its suitability. I have looked at loads of generic chinese tabs but too many of them get poor reviews.
Having had 3 dell computers which have served me well, Im once more heading in their direction.
Hopefully the streak will tick all my boxes so that my daughter will leave my Galaxy S2 alone. Thanks for your help
Regards
Julie
For productivity work, moving from Android 2.x to 3.x is like night and day, it's simply leaps and bounds ahead of froyo/gingerbread, but that's not what you're interested in. The screen on it isnt amazing, but it's not flat out terrible. But I really doubt you'd be able to find a better screen on a cheaper device.
Keep in mind that many of the super cheap tabs wont ever be updated/do not have market access. Even if there are many other alternative markets the android one is still by far the biggest/most important.
There are some games that are not compatable with the s7 with honeycomb installed, but the list is slowly shrinking as developers are making it compatable.
The S7's also one of the fastest (but not THE fastest) 7" tabs you can buy, and black friday is coming up and best buy (if you live in the USA) will be selling it with a black friday discount. If you buy it then it's nearly the same price as those cheap tabs you can buy.
Snag a S7 at $200 or cheaper and you'll be really hard pressed to find something to dislike about it, there's simply nothing that can compete with it at such a low price point. The closest would be the gtab 7, but even then it's still nearly $300.

Hi,
I have a Streak 7 and my son does as well. We both play lots of games. Angry Birds is just one of many. The streak will be a great tablet for your child as it also has some Dell toughness to it and it really is a great piece of hardware. The wifi works great. No issues at all in my house. I take it up stairs and watch movies, skype, etc... no interruptions.

toys r us is a us chain, keep in mind that those cheap tabs have equally low end specs, depending on how demanding the game is, some might not be playable

my 3 y/o daughter watch movies, play educational games, listens to music, learns numbers and alphabet on streak 7 without any problems, she can handle honeycomb gui for herself!. but screen protector and good nonslip case are required for DS7 to survive in child's play ;-)
concerning resolution for texting/browsing/reading - you can always increase/decrease DPI to suit your daughter's eyes!
there are good resolution tuning utilites on the market...

wow, that's one lucky kid.
Came here hoping to see people just as excited about this tablet as I am and I literally just see the same few people defending it from those who are being WAY to picky about a 200 dollar awesome tablet that will be getting straight love from google for a long time. Anyone else actually as excited as I am? lol Sorry to be all up on a soapbox but man im excited for this thing and the negative people are ruining it for me lol. The bezel doesnt bother me, I love the hardware (again for 200 dollars) Im more than fine with 8 or 16 gigs, the lack of tv out is meh (honestly i have hdmi out on my phone and i cant think of ONE TIME that ive used it). The only thing that ive seen that ACTUALLY concerns me is the flicker on bright screens which seems to be par the course for some tegra devices. But it also seems that its fixable so im not really all that worried. Lets keep this thread as a place to be excited and not a downer thread! (If anyone responds to my ranting anyway that is lol)
Cant wait till my 16 gig shows up!!
i am really excited!! only downside is its not available in my country.. so im drooling over all the hands-on on youtube but will probally never release in The Netherlands.
We only have app's in google play so they have not even worked on the upgrade of play (ebooks/movies etc) so it will probally take atleast half a year before they even consider releasing it here. (since all their proffit will come from google play sales).
Ah well.
I Personnally think the bezel on all tablets is big, but the side bezels on the nexus are almost perfect size (look to be 1/2 inches) to me! Top and bottom are meh. Could have done without the front camera though but thats a personal thing as I do not need it
But to be on topix, I am super excited! I cant throw my money at the screen fast enough for google to accept it however...
Been super excited for this tablet when rumors started spreading around May. If Asus can get their quality control together, this and my GNexus will be the only two devices I will be using for at least a year or two.
so excited I ordered two so the misses can have one swell Can't wait to try some tegra3 only games dead trigger looks great same as bladeslinger oh and that divinci game
Well, I'm both super excited and very negative about the 16 gigs. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1sjQo6fIbBk
I am very excited for it, I am just a little worryed it will show up after I leave for Vermount ... That would suck..
Excited - been waiting for a Nexus tablet.. been a Nexus fan since the N1 (and the G1 before it).
For once, they got the announcement right - 'Available to order immediately'. About time.. I'm sick of manufacturers announcing something cool to huge fanfare then not shipping for 3 months.
Storage is no problem.. my fully loaded Galaxy Nexus is using <1gb in apps. I get all other media over Spotify and Plex.
not bothered about the storage 16gb is plenty for lots of games . cloud is your friend for storage, no 3g so wifi is perfect
Yay!!! Happy people who are as excited as I am! Thanks guys hahaha. Yeah I cant wait to play with Jellybean on that nice IPS panel MMMM so good lol

Not really, considering there are already 1GB games, and more coming out.
Cloud basically limits your serious use to wifi hotspots. I'd much rather have my music/videos collection on storage so I can listen/watch wherever I go (it is possible, but starts to get very crowded very fast).

Yeah this is one thing I just realized. I haven't been as excited about a piece of hardware since I was younger and I was jonesing for the newest game console lol. I havnt even been as excited for any of the phones ive had. This just seems like the turn of a new era as far as tablets are concerned (price and specs wise. good does mean expensive anymore).
What most people dont think about when talking about issues with devices is these devices are geared to the general population...
Aside from us what 3% tops that really USE our device the other 97% wont have 1gb sized games and all that noise

Uhh, games are not a high-end user thing, especially for a tablet (and one whose selling point includes Tegra 3).
Count me in! I wasn't even so excited about iphone and ipad releases before I got tired of them in the last two years. The only thing I am excited about now is the ipad mini. But thanks to Nexus, I don't really think about ipad mini any more.
I'm in Japan right now and had my co worker pre order the case and 16GB for me. I can't wait to get back to the States. I'm selling my iPad 2 for this baby, I just can't wait!!!!
