[Q] Cyanogenmod7 with Gingerbread bootloaders? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can and should it be done?
Thinking of going back to cyanogenmod7 but i have updated my bootloaders to 3.0. Will it have any negative effect on the rom?

2.3* bootloaders and no, don't do it, go back to stock

[Q] Stock 2.3.3 to gingerbread custom rom okay?

would it be alright to go from stock 2.2.3 (JVD/JV5/JV6, H3G)to then flash a gingerbread upwards custom rom?
i know there's issues with the bootloaders downgrading from 2.2.3 to froyo stock
if its okay, how would i go about it?

[Q] Samsung Captivate 2.3.3 Q/A

I have a question and you may find it silly but that's okay, I have my reasons. If I take my Rogers I896 Captivate from stock 2.2 rooted froyo and put it on GB 2.3.3 from the I-9000, Instead of having the GB launcher can I go back to touchwiz from Froyo? Because I love the dock and the launcher, very smooth. And if I go to 2.3.3 is there any chance I can go back to 2.2? I keep hearing everywhere that I will brick if I do.
Yeah you can go back, but you have to be careful because your flashing bootloaders.. A lot of the bricks from 2.3.3 back to 2.2 is user error.
Why do you want to put a i9000 ROM on your phone. Captivate has a ton of gingerbread ROMs...?

The stock 2.3.3 uses the "same" launcher as 2.2 its just TW4 instead of TW3
you can go back to 2.2 you just have to be careful that you dont flash new bootloaders

All the 2.3.3 ROMs for the captivate are from the i9000 source code of gingerbread.

What exactly do you mean by flashing new bootloaders? Are You supposed to keep the ones you got from. 2.3.3?
What folder are ringtones stored in 2.3.3
I want to move my MP3 ringtones to the phone ringtone folder but I can't find them. In the 2.2 version they were in the audio folder but now I can't find a audio folder.
Thanks,
I am trying to search for ROMs based on the I897 2.3.3? Is there a list somewhere or what is best way to search these ROMs without the i9000 ROMs being included? Specifically I would like a ROM that just removes all AT&T branding and bloatware as well as the power on/power off tones/screens.
I have loaded 2.3.3 and flashed the beta 2 Kernal from DG but I do not want Cognition just a clean version of the stock ROM and maybe add a couple things later.

[Q] confusion about JVB/JVH and other only letter listings

im very confused about the captivates organization of roms and what is and is not jvb and jvh.. i own a fascinate. and the only (only letter) acronym used with the fascinate are our "MTD" roms which is the file system used for our aosp roms..
what roms are jvb, jvh? what is your most current source? gingerbread or froyo? what is your most current ota?
JVB, JVH etc are leaked builds for international galaxy S I9000 which have been ported to work with captivate. If you go by this JVR which is 2.3.4 is latest.
But all these are I9000 sources modded to work on captivate. If you are looking at stock captivate build it is KF1 which is GB 2.3.3. KF1 is also a leaked build
Ok.. I have decided to go straight to miui. On the fascinate I would just odin all in 1 stock. Odin a recovery. Flash rom with kernel. It seems like all the guides I find want me to root.. Why would I root if I'm leaving the rom behind end going straight to a rooted rom? .. Is there a guide to flashing miui for captivate I'm not seeing? On fassinate you must flash cm7 first. I'm thinking I would do the same here right?

In answer to your question, here is the guide.
You'll want to be rooted for one simple reason - usually rooting allows you to install the ClockworkMod Recovery Menu (CWM) that will make installing Roms on the Captivate a whole lot easier.
Judging from the guide, you don't need to flash CM7 first. Just make sure you're running the original Froyo/Eclair bootloaders (if you haven't flashed gingerbread, you should have them), and that holding Vol+/Vol-/Power gets you to the recovery menu and that holding Vol+/Vol- and inserting your USB cable gets you to download mode.
Other than that, MIUI away.
Is your version of miui a mtd based rom?

I honestly couldn't tell you. I haven't used MIUI, so I don't have any experience to say. The MIUI info page is a little sparse, but a quick search in the thread does mention MTD a few times, so it's possible.
Cappy miui is MTD based. Gingerbread bootloaders do work but the stock miui/cm7 kernel doesnt ssupport them yet so you'll need to flash a kernel that does support the gb bootloaders such as TalonMTD

I ran miui on gb loaders with no problem. And I used the platypus/NEO 10, 12, & 16 kernels. Talonmtd actually kept causing my phone to freeze up.

[Q] Most efficient/Cleanest method of getting GB Bootloaders?

Been running Cog4 for a while now, but figured it's time I upgraded to GB. Ling story short:
What's the easiest way to upgrade my bootloader? I noticed it's a prerequisite for a few GB ROMs I was looking at.
And should everything bug out on me, is there a way to return to a 2.2 based ROM?
Appreciated!
There is a Bootloader package in dev section. GB bootloaders are backwards compatible with 2.1 and 2.2 roms. Also work with AOSP (MIUI, CM7). You can also just flash leakes GB roms that contain bootloaders. All can be done with ODIN and Heimdall.

I would guess you are on GB bootloaders, but it doesn't matter which ones you are on if you're going to CM7. I wouldn't worry about it until you flash to something else. At that point you can either just reflash a full package with bootloaders to be sure or try flashing without them and see what happens. You should get a pixelated screen at boot on GB if your bootloaders are Froyo.

Yes, as long as you flashed a GB bootloader to get on GB then that's what you have. Just go ahead and flash CM7

As mentioned earlier, if you want to know, just flash a gb ROM. You'll know if you have the wrong bootloaders as soon as it boots. If you think you may have the I9000 bootloaders, power the phone off and try volume up and power at the same time.
I read some where that froyo bootloader is neccessary for flashing cm7. So if I have ginger bootloader. Will it make problem? ?

Not anymore. It used to be froyo only, but now it works with either. However I9000 GB bootloaders may not play nice.
Ohhhh that's nice to know. So it means I can flash cm7 even if I have gb bootloader? ??
Well, yeah.
Whats the difference between cm7 and cm7 nightly ?
For all practical purposes, nothing. CM7 is compiled nightly (well, sort of, the build bot is currently broken) with updates, new features, bug fixes, etc. Every so often when they get a version stable enough for everyone's liking, they make it an official build. The reason I say there's not really any difference is that the current nightlies are at least as stable if not more stable than the current official release.
181 was the last official nightly released if I remember correctly, but you can find other people who are compiling the updates themselves. The one many of us are using can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1347273
thanks for reply guys

Just download the nightly to your sd card and install it from recovery. And no clue, I have never had any lag with adw launcher. You can try others to see if it helps

Cm7 is going to have worse battery life than touch wiz roms. Its a known issue with aosp roms. They don't contain the closed source hardware drivers. That the tw roms have.
