I have made a previous thread long time ago.http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1038598
Finally i have found what makes my screen blank during calls on any gingerbread custom or stock.
Its my faulty proximity sensor.
I used many device tests and they say naturally that my sensor is dead.
Strangely in froyo it works.
I dont care if it is software of hardware,i want you to tell me a way to turn that DAMN thing off as it is driving me crazy.
I have used ALL the apps on market, proximity off, sanity etc,i have bought all but no luck.
Can the app Tasker help me?
PLEASE!!! help me!!! i beg you people.
EDIT
and as i have suspected,if i use my handsfree (they say they turn off the proximity sensor),well everything works super fine....
come on guys...many people have the same issues, you are the gurus.help!
no one???? wtf

that is ridiculous! with hands free the phone works perfectly.
in htc with the same problem they have found a way to disable it through hex editor.
it must not be that hard for a programmer
with root explorer and a hex editor.
wtf??? im in xda
edit
look how many people have this problem
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=15291
there must be a solution for us too.
I have the same problem. All stock and custom roms gives me this error. I was finally able to turn off the proximity sensor with the latest MIUI Rom.
A fix would be great thou.
If it works fine in Froyo I would say it is software. Have you tried CM7? you might be luckier.
It should be easy for a kernel dev (not me sorry) to disable it. It would be a matter of not compiling the sensor's driver in the kernel so it will never get loaded.
Maybe if you ask one of the kernel devs how to compile a working Kernel and disabled the driver they might do it for you.
If you are using a stock firmware then probably cf-root with proximity sensor hack would be the best option.
K.
EDIT: I had a look at the kernel menu and indeed the GP2A sensor is there and seems easy to not include. The bad news is that it looks like the light and proximity are the same hardware (or at least driver) so if you disable one I am sure you will loose the other one.
This is the name as it appears in the kernel menuconfig "GP2A ambient light and proximity input device". Please note that I never compiled an Android kernel (but will soon for fun) and my knowledge is quite limited.

This is a great question as I ran into the same exact problem. My issue started after I downloaded the "de Blob" game which allows you to "calibrate" the sensor based on the orientation of how you want to hold the phone during accelerometer based play. After doing so my auto rotate would turn at awkward times and I found that other games didn't respond appropriately. I tried going back and "re-calibrating" by laying the phone flat but that didn't work. What ended up working for me (as I could not find for the LIFE of me where the "calibrate" feature was in the settings) the "Bubble" app which is basically a level app that tells you if a surface is level. Once I calibrated in the Bubble app, I no longer had the issue. Needles to say I no longer use the accelerometer to play "de Blob" and have emailed him to let him know of the issue. (I haven't gotten a response) Hope this helps. I will be looking forward to other ideas on how to re-calbrate the sensor in case this happens again. I'm sure there is a easier way.
yea i tried the bubble app out and now my gsensor is not working at all no matter what direction i put it in the gsensor does not respond
Really? Sorry man. Worked for me. You may need to start from scratch by wiping your phone and reflashing your ROM
The same problem
Hi are you have some solution. My G-sensor didn't respond too.

They recommend you to mahe "8" signs with your phone in hand (twist it in all direction) because the sensor recalibrates that way. This is othe official advice.
Calibrating with the bubble app should work too. If not - alt+w
I have got the G-Sensor.
From Recovery
backup
Alt+W - delete all
and update to CM last stable
No joke, try shaking your g1 around kind of hard, it might be stuck. Reset it again after that and see what happens, worth a shot.
may sound daft, but have you tried this solution?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=4424396&#post4424396
it is a quick fix for auto rotate issues, not a permanent solution, but it may help as auto rotate is accellerometer based, as are all the apps you're trying to use
if it works, thanks go to MikeTaylor00, not me, i'm merely a messenger

hey senaia, is this a proven method? Thanks =)
Does anyone know of a way to remove the proximity sensor drivers or shut it off completely my screen just goes black during a call and i need to use the keypad during calls i have tried all the proximity apps on market and it has no effect, have tried calibration etc odin firmware updates to the point i killed my phone just got it back from repair and was told it needs a new chip to rectify the problem.
I have spent weeks going through forums for a solution and i know on my brothers sgs 2 it has a setting in the menu to turn it off.
This seems to be a common problem with no resolve so im looking for someone to resolve this problem and make alot of people happy.
We all no As these phones age this will be more and more common.
Techies get ur teeth into this or even software writers make An app n earn some cash,
This would b a great ego booster for someone to say i solved that when no one in the world could.
Thanks...........looney

Mh? Why not pressing the home button during call.
Screen is enabled then...
Anyway MIUI got this option to switch it off.
Don't know if this setting is available in Stock ROMs.
screen should go back on when you move your head out of the ~5cm sensor radious. if it is not happening there are two possibilities:
- something wrong with firmware -> reflash phone with pure unrooted samsung firmware and check if problem persist
- someting is wrong with proximity sensor -> use warranty and send it to service center with proper description of the problem
Thanks for the replys the home button won't work as the proxy is up the spout had it checked the chip is blown, when u press the home key won't work as the phone is trying to find the proxy then eventualy it will crash and force close.
No software update will do it as its a hardware fault unless it turns it off so will have a look at the one you suggested.
There is def a stock version but i fear it is only on the s2 to turn blank screen off il check my bro's firmware, till then keep the suggestions coming in thanks....

Here is a possible solution. Check the + 3.7 volts at this point, if there is no tension, then feed it thither with a jumper

Thanks for the tip. Where can i get 3.7 V from? (which part of the MB)? Is there a way of hardware disabling the sensor? the software testers report 0.7 mA leakage on a sensor (which is faulty anyways)

You can do this:
My proximity sensor seems to have stopped working (always gives a value of 0.0) as a result whenever a call is placed the screen goes off and i cant do anything at all, cant even end the call. This seems to be hardware problem, as cleaning the area is not helping.
Is there a way to disable the proximity sensor completely/permanently?
The only working way i found was using the "Hardware Disabler" app in play store and disabling /sys/bus/platform/drivers/proximity, but that makes the phone as slow as hell. How would I go about deleting this folder otherwise? Root Explorer is not allowing me to do this.
All the other solutions i found on the net do not help (using proximity recalibration, adding lines to build.prop, putting a script in init.d - Though perhaps I am not using it correctly).
Someone please help. The problem is driving me crazy.
Note: using CM9.0 RC2
Nobody has any issues with the proximity sensor on their phones?
And is there no actual way to disable it?
nobody here who can help?

I still need help on this?
Hi, last time I tried MIUI rom and iinm there is an option to disable the proximity sensor. But, if you doesn't like MIUI.. I am don't know any other workaround for it anymore.
Or try some different ROM to make sure if it is actually hardware issue or software issue.....
Use miui rom and press on dial and then menu...Again press on setting and Answer setting .. You will find there the option to disable proximity sensor..
My Nexus 6 now goes off and doesnt come on during call I have to end the call to even see.
I just checked and it has been damaged. I have tried everything and finally thought is there a method by which i can disable it by Build prop or disabling drivers. I have tried all apps so i wanted a root level solution
Please devs help me out
FIX: Finally got the fix in benzo rom, in the call app there is an option to keep screen on during calls (only in newer builds from 25th may onwards). FInally fell in love with N6 all over again
This is very weird.
I have never noticed this kind of radio silence in any of the device threads, but on the most open phone of them all and google flagship was most surprising.
I just wanted to know any root kind of fix for priximity sensor, have googled and tried everything, just wanted some help from a dev
http://forum.xda-dev...-1-rom-t3069031
try that
I've seen a million threads asking for proximity sensor or hall effect sensor being disabled in various device forums and I've never seem one get a working answer
Exactly

and FYI i dont have any screen protector
the kind of fix I am talking about is this

There's a proximity fix zip for this phone too, but I don't think it will help in your situation.
Well I have the dreaded black screen during calls due to malfunctioning proximity sensor...
There are many threads like it, but this one is mine... It is specific and goes beyond the other threads...
To illustrate this, I have tried:
Tweaking the settings via the ol' Proximity Off Lite app (doesn't work, proximity sensor has a value of 0, no matter what)
fixing the "fix the sensor filter with electric tape" trick (did not work, still 0 no matter what)
Turning the sensor off with Xposed (No framework for Nougat)
Installing the recompiled Dialer.apk (maybe it is how I rooted my phone, but I cannot launch ADB with root from the command line, I can get root from the shell, but not from the CLI. Considering that I have the GoogleDialer.apk rather than the dialer.apk I had my doubts anyway...)
Etc ...
Basically, the bottom line: I cannot turn my d*mn prox sensor off & have tried pretty much everything my Google-fu could conjure...
So, here I am... Frustrated and bemused... Any suggestions?

Hello, someone else had a similar issue and it was due to a screen issue rather than the sensor itself... Check this:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/help/proximity-sensor-near-screen-coming-t3558519
Good luck...
I need a title?
Alas, were it so simple... Unfortunately, I cannot get my prox sensor to register anything other than zero, no matter what I do. Trust me, I have done everything including VooDoo (I don't like to talk about that. It scares the children).
It's dead Jim.
I see now that Google will soon be releasing it's "O" operating system so, I am losing hope. My wife said I can have her iPhone when she upgrades next week. Oh dear Lord, no. Just imagine ...
Thanks in advance.

Hello...
Looks like you exhausted every possibilities...
I guess you already seen it. Just in case, did you try the proximity sensor fix: https://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/development/mod-fix-proximity-sensor-5-1-rom-t3069031
Since it's for 5.1, you can still push files with a file explorer.
Good luck...

So... Backup /vendor/firmware, unzip and transfer files in firmware folder in /vendor/firmware/
Easy to do after all you have already tried..!

I just upgraded from my Nexus 6 to the Google Pixel XL 3. That black screen issue DROVE ME INSANE when I was using my Nexus 6. One work around, which sucks, is to plugin something to the headphone jack. For whatever reason this seems to snap the phone out of that strange state. It would have been nice of Google to correct that obnoxious issue, but, it will never happen now.
Best of luck!
