How do I install an APK file from my SD card? - Captivate Themes and Apps

Hi.
I have been emailed an APK file for an App and need to install it.
I have transferred to the root directory of the phones SD card, but am stuck from there.
Any ideas?

have you tried just going into your files and selecting it. Usually it will prompt you to install the .apk and thats about it. You might need to allow non market apps, but it again should prompt you to do all this. There is probably another way, but i've never had to do any other extra steps.

Download Easy Installer from the market. It is free and will install from internal or external memory.

Thanks. Mucy appreciated

I usually have defaulted to easy installer but have had an eye opener with system apps because they are not that easy. I guess sys apps you need to push with adb or need a root file explorer co copy and paste the app within a specific directory file

How to view root directory

I tried searching the forum but havent found a post explaining how to do this. I know its a noob question. I was trying to install HHC extra themes, which involves copying the extracted files to a directory accessible through root. Can anyone explain how to do this?
If it's a file that has to be installed to the root of the phone itself, then put it in the windows folder. If it's one that can be installed to the root of an SD card then put it straight on the card, not in any folder.

com.androidmegastore.livewallpaper.gogreen.zip

I installed this from the market on my legend rom. I have created a nandroid backup of that rom and I'm now rockin the nonsense rom from team-slide (great rom by the way!). However I'm trying to find this on the market now and it seems like it is nowhere to be found. I've tried a variation of searches with no luck. So I thought, well I'll just restore my legend rom backup and adb pull the file from there. It was located in the /data/app as a .zip file while the other apps were .apk. Anyhow I was able to pull the file and its now on my computer. I then did a restore to my nonsesnse rom but I'm unsure how to get the zip file back on the phone. I can adb push it on there but it doesn't 'install' it per sey. Any ideas on how to get this app back on the nonsense rom?
You can place the apk on the sd card and then on the phone you can use astro to install it. If that doesn't work you can connect to the pc and use the "adb install" command.
Sent from my HTC Mytouch 3G Slide using XDA App
Part of the problem is that I don't see an apk file. The file is actually .zip in the /data/app path. The other files in the /data/app path are .apk files. Am I missing something here or is the apk file in another path? When I unzip the file on my computer there are multiple folders. If I had the actual apk then I might be in business. Any suggenstions on where it might be hiding?
go to app private in the backup that u got the zip from there should b the apk
update - app private had the apk, installed and working fine, thanks for all the help. So is it safe to say if it is a zip file the apk will always appear in app private? Why make this different from the other apks? Is it just developer specific i guess?

Hi, you cannot access the files. =(
hello,
it's not clear if you want access file within android or just connecting your SD card to a computer.
Can you install apk file (i.e. downloaded from market place?)
i want to access files within android because i want to install apk files from memory card.
i tried to install apk files from market palce but after selecting any application, it shows downloading but doesnt finish download even after several minutes.
I have had similar problem, my 2GB sdcard was not full but I could non use at all, I formatted full FAT32 and put back the file. This solved the problem.
any luck
Are you saying that when you use something like OI file manager, you can not see any files on the memory card ?
i want to rom version of android2.2 too.

i dont have a solution for your problem, but if you have .apk files put it in the "Androidapps" Folder on your sdcard via PC and then run Android. It install automaticly if you start Android.

Using different .apk file?

If I want to change an .apk file on my phone is using the Push adb command the same as just using Root Explorer removing the file I want to replace and just copying new one in its place? Are the results the same either way?
Thanks
It depends?
90% of the time unless I'm told to specifically copy over the existing and reboot is just copy the app to my phone and use ES File Explorer and have it install that way.
The other method (since I'm cheap and lazy... well ok and broke) is using ADB / SU to copy the app into the directory and reboot the phone.
you could do that , you could also put all the files that you need on your sd card...download super manager and move them from sd to /system/app or whatever you need to do ...
I was wanting to try a different Camera.apk. I was able to use Root Explorer rename the current camera file(so I still had) and then copied new one in it's place and it did fine.
Thanks

(FIXED CAN BE CLOSED) Need stock file manager

so I deleted a lot of things I didn't need, one of those being the stock file manager with the blue icon named "files" and now I can't enable apps to write to the SD card because apparently it needs that app to grant SD card usage and I can't find it anywhere, does anyone can share it please?
thanks in advance
EDIT:
managed to get it by merging the sparsechunks to create a .img file and then extracting it, if you ever need it here is the guide:
