[Q] /: files lost on reboot? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My phone has been "broken" for the past 7 days, and I'm having troubles uploading any factoryfs.rfs containing the stock /app and /media folders.
A possible workaround would be flashing as much as needed(sh executable; ls, mv etc) to be able to push the rest through adb.
Pushing the /media folder seemed to be working at first. Here's the issue: when I reboot and execute ls trough adb the /media folder is missing.
I also tried replacing the push command with "mkdir test.d". That folder was also lost on reboot.
When creating the "test.d"-folder in /mnt/sdcard it stayed.
Any suggestions are appreciated.
Another quick question that's too simple to find by googling: does your ClockWorkMod show the option to mount /system at recovery boot? I'm a bit worried since mine does. It could be related to the topic.

[Q] FRG83D Update Problems

I have a rooted (rage) N1 that I loaded the G2 Launcher2.apk on to. Doing this caused the N1 to fail the update when it tried to apply FRG83D.
Stupidly, I decided that deleting the /system/app/launcher2.apk file was the right idea. And then rebooted.
Now the phone hangs on the boot animation. Attempting to apply with NO launcher2.apk results in the same error.
I have ADB installed, and I can adb shell into the phone and su. I have the old, original N1 launcher backed up on my SD card, but I can't figure out how to:
1) Mount the sdcard while ADB shell'd in from just the boot animation screen so that I can browse the card
2) Move the launcher2.apk backup file into the /system/app directory without getting a "Cross-device link" error when I use mv.
Can someone provide me with the exact commands to get the /sdcard/launcher2 backup/launcher2.apk file on to /system/app while ADB'd in only from the boot animation?
Thanks so much, I'm digging through the forums in the mean time, but it's tricky to track down exactly what to do.
I appear to have fixed everything. I wasn't able to access the SD card through ADB, but I *was* able to mount it using the:
Code:
echo /dev/block/mmcblk0 > /sys/devices/platform/usb_mass_storage/lun0/file
method.
From there, I copied my backup to my desktop, and I found I was able to ADB push to just the /data/local/tmp directory. Don't know if I could've gone anywhere else, but that worked.
From there, I was about to:
Code:
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
to mount/make writable the /system/app directory,
and then:
Code:
cat /data/local/tmp/launcher2.apk > /system/app/launcher2.apk
So there's that. All to restore the Launcher to a version that would allow for a somewhat pointless update. Woo!

[Q] I9000T stuck during boot, can't get root

I used z4root's temporary root and enabled RyanZA's OCLF but the phone never booted again (stuck at Galaxy S logo, after my carrier's logo.)
"adb logcat" shows that pretty much everything in /data is missing.
I can't get root to investigate much further. I installed update.zip from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728754
which gave me su and busybox, but su just reports "Permission denied" and logcat shows
E/su ( 3315): stat failed with 20: Not a directory
W/su ( 3315): request rejected (2000->0 /system/bin/sh)
(in recovery mode, the stat fails with 2: No such file or directory instead). "su -s /system/xbin/busybox" fails in the same way.
I have /system/app/Superuser.apk, but given that nothing is really running due to the state of /data I don't think that helps. I can't see what's in /data due to not having root though.
any suggestions?
ok I have unfucked the phone. I couldn't get RageAgainstTheCage to run (never got a root shell), but the newer KillingInTheNameOf worked.
In /data I found that the lag fix had renamed data, system, app, app-private, dalvik-cache with .old suffixes. The ext2 volume was there but nothing was mounting it on boot. The directories had been replaced with files just containing the text "stump".
For now I nuked the files, renamed the .old directories back to what they should've been, and the phone is working again. (Still no lagfix though.)

Deodex failure, need help please.

Hi guys
I'm new to deodexing, following a guide for XUltimate.
I copied my system\app dir to a folder called origi_app, and my system\framework to a folder called origi_frame on my int SD card, then copied these two folders to my PC XUltimate dir.
Ran option 3, then 4, both finished with sucessful.
This gave me two new folders in the XUltimate dir...
done_app & done_frame
I copied these back to my int SD card, then following the guide, ran ADB from cmd prompt..
Typed: ADB Shell
Got a $
Typed: SU
This gave me a Permission Denied ??
So as per the guide, I tried Root Explorer...
Selected All the .apps in done_App, selected copy and then tried to paste into the system\app dir.... this then gave me a failed to copy due to lack of space error and the phone started to vibrate and com.android force closing repeatedly...
Were did I go wrong, why did I get permission denied trying to get the SU cmd?
The full adb guide was as follows:
adb shell
su
stop
mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/mmcblk1p21 /system
rm /system/app/*.odex
rm /system/framework/*.odex
cp /sdcard/done_app/* /system/app/
cp /sdcard/done_frame/* /system/framework/
mount -o ro,remount /dev/block/mmcblk1p21 /system
reboot
As above, got as far as SU then got permission denied!
So thankfully I did a nandroid backup before and am currently restoring it...
EDIT: My Backup has just finished restoring from CWM... rebooted but it is now on original startup setup and getting force closes for lots of apps???
Had to re add my APN settings to re download MY Backup and am currently restoring apps and data from it now! Fingers crossed. I thought the whole point of a cwm back up was to create an exact image of the whole system, files, date and settings etc?
Well, restored via My Backup, but rom manager and Sky news kept force closing, so wiped the whole thing and flash a custom js8 from from Doc's kitchen... glad I did... just miss the cirlce battery mod I had before.

[Q] Accessing /data if CM9 won't boot

How can I access the /data/ partition?
I was using the touchpad, installed some apps like teamviewer/unified remote/xbmc from the market, and all was going well and then for no reason the tablet froze, CM9 just stopped responding. So I rebooted it (holding the home button and power button was the only way to get it to do anything) but it's stuck at the Cyanogenmod boot animation. It's been on that animation for 5-10 minutes, so I rebooted again, went into clockworkmod and reflashed the latest nightly and gapps. I then rebooted, android booted up, said it was upgrading/optimizing 77 something apps, then it said it was starting the apps, and then it froze at that point, wouldn't proceed. I then reboot and am stuck at the boot animation again. My best guess is that one of the apps I installed is hosing it. I plugged the usb cable in and normally during the boot animation of my phone I can adb logcat but I can't seem to adb detect this device during boot animation. Windows see's it as a MTP device but no filesystem comes up in my computer. So adb logcat and adb shell so I can get into /data/app to wipe out the last few apps I installed won't work, but on my phone I can also adb shell in from CWM. So I rebooted into CWM but when I connect the cable to the laptop it still doesn't see it as an Android ADB device. No adb shell. Not like my phone at all.
So back to my original question, short of wiping /data from CWM, is there anyway for me to get at /data/app to delete some files? I'm curious what's causing this.
You can do an and pull from clockwork mod or have you tried mounting it on the computer from the clockwork mod options?
I've mounted before in clockwork but only sdcard, so that i can put a zip on it to flash. Can you also usb mount the /data partition?
Sent from my SGH-I777 using XDA
If you can reboot into WebOS, I know a way you can mount it and grab what you need.
Boot into WebOS, and connect your tablet to your PC. Then start up Novaterm (C:\Program Files\Palm, Inc\terminal\novaterm.bat). Connect to your tablet.
From there, you'll be at a root prompt. This is good. Type the following commands:
- mount /dev/mapper/store-media /media/card
- mount /dev/mapper/store-cm--data /media/hdd
- cd /media/hdd
- mkdir /media/card/cmdata (this will make a backup folder for you)
From there, you can use basic linux commands to copy files from your data partition to your media card. The ones you should need (forgive me listing the extra commands, even if you know them):
- ls (LS) will give you a directory listing
- cp -r <Folder> /media/card/cmdata (this will backup whatever folder you wanna backup to the cmdata on your card)
- rm -r <folder> (this will remove whatever folder you wanna remove)
- rm <filename> (this will remove whatever file you wanna remove)
I just tested this method, and it allows you to back up whatever you want, as long as you can get into your /data partition. You can do whatever you need to do. Just be careful you don't remove something you don't have to.
Hope this helps you, mate. If so, hit Thanks, if not, drop me a PM and we'll discuss other options.

Click to collapse
Yes, you can, but you can only read it from a Linux PC. A Windows system will not be able to access the partition, because it is an ext3 filesystem.
You can also use the "USB mode" used to install CM, but it will run into the same problem. Without Linux, you will not be able to access files.
I would clear the cache, that usually seems to solve these kind of issues. (Of course it could also mess it up further...)

Bootloop after installing Xposed framework

Hello,
I am hoping someone can assist with interpreting my log file or provide suggestions on how to convert my backups into a usable format that can be flashed back to the phone thus recovering it to a usable state. I have a logcat and dmesg in a text log file. I have put the file up on Google drive, the link is here-
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B9e...ew?usp=sharing
I also spent time reading and studying the post about using logcat and dmesg posted here-
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2274119
I believe the last operation I tried before softbricking was installing the Xposed framework module for my device (running Lollipop 5.1.1).
I have tried one solution so far, go into recovery, clear cache and reboot.
To recover from this issue I think I have two basic options-
#1 restore from backup
#2 locate the problem that is causing the system to hang at startup in the first place
At the end of the day I am trying to find the simplest, quickest method to get back up and running. Both methods are acceptable to me. I am not worried about losing any data.
My phone is a BLU Studio C 5+5 LTE and therefore can't use TWRP or CWM (At least that is my assumption, maybe someone knows different). Before getting into the softbrick state I took 3 different types of backups in the hopes that one of them could be used in case it was needed. (like this)
Type 1 - I did an ADB shell backup from a completely stock device (unrooted). I used this command-
adb backup -apk -all -f fullbackup.adb
For this method I followed this guide here-
https://linuxiswonderful.wordpress.com/2015/04/04/full-backup-of-nonrooted-android/
Type 2 - I used Titanium backup and performed a complete system and application backup
Type 3 - I rooted the phone and backed up all partitions using dd after reviewing the partition layout of the device. For example, to backup the system partition I did the following at an ADB shell-
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p21 of=/storage/sdcard1/firmware-img/system.img
I am able to still communicate to my device using ADB and I can get an ADB shell or enter fastboot mode.
My challenge/sticking point is how to turn my backups into a usable format to get me back on track or understand the boot process enough to get out of the boot loop. I am familiar with how Linux boots as I am a SysAdmin. I know Android is similar but just different enough to make me research this further.
The first thing I tried was mounting my raw image files created from the dd process. I followed this guide-
https://samindaw.wordpress.com/2012/03/21/mounting-a-file-as-a-file-system-in-linux/
I ran these commands-
#losetup /dev/loop0 /path/to/my/system.img
# mkfs -t ext3 -m 1 -v /dev/loop0
# mount -t ext3 /dev/loop0 /mnt
# cd /mnt
# ls
The various image files I created all seemed to mount "ok" OK meaning that the loopback mount process worked but it appears there is nothing but a lost+found folder in the mounted image. (I'm not sure why that is.)
I am still researching methods to turn my other backups into something usable for recovery purposes.
For using the adb backup file I created, this is what my understanding is-
Adb backup uses a type of compression (don’t remember what kind). I would need to uncompress the file first. After uncompressing and being able to view the file contents I would think I should be able to put together a flashable zip file of some sort.
I think the process for Titanium backup would generally be the same- uncompress/convert file format, create/assemble a flashable zip file
If there is any other info you need to see, please let me know. I made a lot of notes about the system architecture, partition layout, etc.
Many Thanks in Advance for your Advice!
Found my answer. Used ADB shell and mounted /system in RW mode. Changed /system/bin/dex2oat filename and the device booted normally. Issue solved!
