[Q] Best modem for canadian Bell ? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I remember reading somewhere that Bell Canada uses the 850Mhz band and only certain modems support it, can anyone point me to somewhere I can download the latest or best modem for Bell Canada ?

Use either KC1 or JL2 these are the Canadian modems. Get them in rom kitchen or if your on CM7 go to Zach's thread and he has it there

How do I get the modem only from the romkitchen ? (I'm using GingerReal rom so I don't want the whole package from romkitchen)
(I remember there was an update.zip only option, but it seems gone)

Just download the modem you want from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9874879&postcount=1
They are all flashable through cwm recovery.

Thanks a lot, bookmarked it

Yeah its a shame they don't sticky the REALLY useful posts, like the above modem listing. There is another fantastic post out there with a complete list of deodexed samsung roms which is lost on the forum somewhere... I'm really sick of scrolling past 11 stickies that only answer maybe 10% of the questions on the general forum.
Anyway, I'm ranting. Glad the link helped!

what is useful is all relative...

Sorry if the thread is closed but i just dont wanna make a new thread just for this... Do any of you guys know any other better modems to use in BC, Canada other than UKG3 with 850Mhz band for Bell Mobility? JL2 and JK4 suck. anything else?

[Q] Darky's Rom 8.0 - Issues with weak signal

I recently updated to Darky's Rom, 8.0, wipe edition, and although I really like how fast it is, and the battery life seems ok, I've noticed a strange issue.
I'm on Rogers in Canada, with a Bell Galaxy S Vibrant (i9000m) so it only gets UMTS band 1900.
While on the stock Samsung firmware, I'm often in an area where I get say 1-3 bars, but it seems to work fine.
On Darky's rom, it's constantly going from the 1-3 bars to no signal
In areas with good-excellent signal, it works flawlessly.
I'm guessing this is a bug with the modem he is using in this rom?
Any ideas anyone?
The modem he uses is the latest one XXJPY. Only thing I can suggest is try one of Doc's ROM's and choose the modem you had before you installed Darky's ROM and see if that affects performance. Some modems perform better for others purely because of their location (Normally Europe tbh mate). If you see better signal from a different modem on Doc's though and its a real problem to use Darky's, just make as much of a similar version or maybe one you actually prefer in his kitchen and install R64's theme ontop. Won't be much different tbh mate
Instead of flashing another rom why don't you just try flashing a new modem, in the JL2 thread found in the general section theres a JL2 modem file thats flashable with clockwork. Try just flashing the modem to see if it helps you out.

Thanks, I found it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10188028&postcount=177
I may give that a whirl, at least to try it. It seems the general consensus is that the GPS does not work anywhere near as well with this as with the one Darky uses, but I definetly want to compare, so it's good. Thanks

That's pretty neat, I hadn't seen that before
I'm running darky's 8.0 with a jl2 modem. Just find a modem that is flashable via cwm and flash that on top look in one of my recent posts, there is one in there. Then all you need to do is manually add your access point name after you flash the modem and you should be good.

JL2 Modem with 8.0
I'm running darky's 8.0 with a jl2 modem and the signal and GPS functions amazingly. I'm on Fido (Rogers Network) and highly recommend flashing the JL2 modem to fix your issue.
there you go!
Just flash with CWM
thanks guys, i'll give it a try.
btw I did some more investigation by going through the band selection.
Rogers, who I use, uses GSM (EDGE) on 850mhz and 1900mhz, and UMTS (3G) on 850mhz and 1900mhz
The i9000m supports GSM (EDGE) on 850mhz and 1900mhz, and UMTS (3G) on 1900mhz
Using Darky's rom, GSM 1900mhz and UMTS 1900mhz are working. GSM 850mhz is NOT working, hence when I'm in an area with poor 3g signal, it is dropping to EDGE, and since I'm not getting the 850mhz GSM band, I'm dependent on the 1900mhz GSM band, which is iffy in this area
So I installed the JL2 modem, and sure enough 850mhz is BACK!
Woot! Thanks people
I'll do some tests with the GPS later and see if that is still working correctly.

Great to hear! Enjoy this awesome ROM and if you haven't already, please consider donating as Darky has put a lot of work into the creation of the ROM.
no issues at all since switching back to JL2 modem, looks like this is a must for Rogers users.
Thanks again all.
Works for Latin America SGS
Thanks for the info. My phone works very well now.

Is there a way for me to verify the version of my modem? It looks like it's working better ever since I flashed JL2 modem, but I just would like to check...
Hello everyone!
Im from Malaysia. I flashed my GT-I9000 about with Darky ROM 10.2 final which is based on JVQ ROM (Gingerbread 2.3.4) about a week ago. Everything else is great except for the poor signal strength. I suspected this could be due to Europe Modem. Can I flash my phone with Asia modem? If yes, what the best asia's modem version to be used with DarkyROM JQV v10.2?

850Mhz 3G and Overcome

Hi guys
I'm running a Telstra (australia telco) tab on Overcome 1.4.5 custom ROM.
This carrier has an 850Mhz 3G network just like AT&T or Rogers over in N America.
I am unable to connect 850Mhz in HSDPA, only in GSM.
I have tried both JMF modem and stock Telstra modem (i.e. stock from carrier), same issue. If I force the 'WCDMA' setting I cannot see the 850 network at all.
Anyone else running Overcome and using 850Mhz 3G? Help appreciated
i have the same tab, and im on overcome 1.4.5 still, grab the modem.bin from rotohammers thread, by memory its the i9000 modem, ive been using that and its been working perfectly.
cool, and you're on NextG?
BTW I've tried locking it to 850Mhz via @#2263#, and it is still choosing the 2100 network (3Telstra) lol. A guy on whirlpool forum is telling me its a random bug, heard anything about that?
You can get a CWM flashable bell modem at the first post of the overcome thread.
yeah I'm trying that tonight (the JMK modem) cheers @ work now don't have the cable with me...
FWIW the jk3 (typoed jmk above) modem did the trick.
It wasn't included in the overcome 1.4.5 thread but IS on the 1.6 threads, go figure
not sure why the stock carrier modem didn't work? but not fussed

[Q] Baseband / Modem Versions

Okay, Long story here folks.
Firstly, I'll just let you know that I'm from Saskatoon, Sask. Canada. And my carrier is Sasktel.
About a month ago i decided to try using a custom Rom. I decided on, and successfully installed Darky's V10.0 RC5.
Initially I was thrilled! It was fast, stable, and improved my battery life by about double.
However, When I traveled outside of Saskatoon, I had no phone service. It was only when I passed through major cities that I has service. After some research, I discovered that Sasktel uses 850/1900 Mhz signal. The modem that was installed with Darky's ( I think it was JVK ) did not support 850 Mhz, but did support 1900Mhz which are set up in major cities, but not along highways.
Again, after some research, I found that the JL2 modem supports the 850 Mhz. I Kept Darky's installed, downloaded the modem file from samfirmware, flashed the JL2 modem through Odin, and enabled 850Mhz via *#*#197328640#*#*
The problem is that my battery life is terrible again. I only get about half a day out of it. This is a huge testament to how much the baseband version affects battery life.
So, my question is - How many modem/baseband versions are there available? And which of these support 850Mhz? Is it recommend to mix different build versions with baseband versions?
Can someone recommend a version that has excellent battery life and supports 850?
I've scoured the internet and haven't been able to find anything.
I'd appreciate your assistance.
Thanks,
Dax
I seem to be having the same sort of issue with Bell, all these custom roms / modems work awesome in the cities, but once your on the highway you have no coverage, very frustrating.
Currently looking for ways to access the 850 band with android 2.3, currently no luck, will post if i get results. :/
I believe kc1 is currently the best 850. however it is a froyo modem... it does work but its not.perfect. tubjv6 is supposed to support 850 but i havent seen it anywhere
pileot,
I've been able to get 850 working on Android 2.3. I found the answer on XDA. After you've flashed your custom rom, go to samfirmware and create an account. Then, find the i9000 firmwares for America/Australia and download the I9000UGJL2. Extract the modem file and flash it through Odin.
Then, you need to enable the 850Mhz band by following the instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1042113
The problem for me is that i've done this, and the battery useage is awful. I'm looking for a different 850 modem that has excellent battery life. Any input is appreciated.
astralmind, I found the TUBJ6V on Samfirmware.
I'm downloading now and will let you know the results.. Thanks.
Also, i just noticed that JL2 is for Android 2.2, and i'm running 2.3.
Everything works okay, but the battery drain is pretty bad. Could this be because i'm using a Froyo modem on Gingerbread?
Found a thread that might be helpful - it's got a big list of CWM flashable modems. Apparently, they support 850. No info on which work well, or which perform well.

just downloaded the cwm3_tljl3, the tijl3 is what I used on my Telus galaxy all the time and had good battery and excellent service on Darky's 2.2 roms. Just installed on the wife's Bell Galaxy, with Darky's 10.1 and seems to be working just need to test out the service and battery life. Going out of town in a couple of days and will report back with service and battery life.
try a different ROM

do they work on galaxy S?
cuz it is posted in captive section
They work, I'm using an UGJL2 from that page, on a Galaxy S (i9000).
Just make sure you get the CWM3 version if you have Darky, and install it from CWM recovery using "install zip from card".
And pay attention that you take an i9000 version of course, because there are 3 batches of links there, i9000 2010, i9000 2011, and I897 2011.
I used the 2011 ones since I just got my phone two weeks ago.

Yes it is the same as the international one.
i am able to flash any i9000 rom on my i9000m and it works fine...
I've flash darky's Roms (from 9.5 up) and now i'm currently using Dark Core 2.7.3_4 JVP running the F1 JVP V9 ROM and love it.
What did you need to know?
And i9000t = i9000?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA Premium App
For GT-I9000M, any rom would most likely work, but you might get issue with the modem.
If so, do what's stated here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=12156313&postcount=438
and you'll be able to run almost any modem
How can I find out what is the original bell mobility froyo rom? I want to reverse my phone back to bell's settings.
Can someone please help!
Bells firmware is KC1
Sent from my GT-I9000M using XDA Premium App
The I9000m is very similar with the exception being that it uses 850mhz band umts and GSM rather than 900mhz.
this is why you might have issues with the modem. International version modems support 1900mhz band so you may not notice the issues immediately as bell runs both 1900 and 850 but its best to at least flash a modem that uses what is available. Some people think the 850 band is better but unless you check to see what band is in use all the time who really cares as long as it is available.
As for the firmware. As mentioned the most current is known as KC1 which is the last 3 digits of the whole thing. You can find it at samfirmware.com (you need a username to download - they seem OK - no spam) and then flash it via ODIN (search for 1 of about 18000 tutorials here or see the one at samfirmware.com)
Good luck all.

[Q] SGH-T849 Latin Rom

Hi, I have to take the chance to thank all the xda developers and forum users that have helped me with the hints and tutorials. I had never have to ask because all my questions where already answered in the forum but now I have a specific case where I have a SGH-T849 Tmobil tablet and need to install the latin P1000N rom. In case anyone wonder why it is because in the country I am the voice and 3g works perfect with this rom and with the current rom the max I've got is edge + voice.
So the question is .... Can I flash the P1000N stock rom in a SHG T849? If not and some one has the info I would like to know why.
Thanks again.
I used to have tmobile tab and i flashed p1000 roms from the samfirmware without any problems.
You will have to flash tmobile radio after you are done rom flashing.
if you want to be extra careful, dont flash the bootloaders.
Still dont blame me in case you brick it.
You can't flash a "N" rom unless that's your model. They are not compatible.
You won't get 3g on a t-mobile tab unless you're on a t-mobile network (1700/2100 bands). The rom can't change that.
thanks rangercaptain..... little bit late or better said too soon I have tried, I bricked it :-( no download mode no boot only lights the buttons...
