How to add APNs to a Custom ROM - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey I have a Hero and I want to put my custom APNs into DamageControlExpresso ROM. I wanna replace which ever ones are in there with the ones that I have. This way I don't have to do an APN Back n Restore thing.

ROM Installation questions

I have looked into a few threads and found some information but nothing to answer my questions
when installing a new ROM will i be able to save my current ROM + settings + porgrams in order to revert back to at a later point in case the newer Rom I dislike?
also
Installing a ROM will probably delete my o2 Service settings how will i go about getting them all back/setting my phone up again?
Any help on these 2 questions will help greatly especially from o2 users who have changed ROMs
search for UC-user customization i believe

u can make a backup of your rom, then flash a new one and if u dont like it, u can flash back to your first rom and restore the backup.
What u mean by servise settings? Like provider settings for mms, internet, ....? If so, then almost every rom has app called connection setup that will automatically detect your provider and setup your settings.
lol i was about to post the same question as well. now that i know this i have one question, would it be better to get a start a new rom when i get a microsd memory or is it enough with the phone memory?

the rom is stored in phone memory, but when u want to install new apps, its better to install them to sd.

More info on the back up side of things would be great.. i have found some old thread on dumping.. but at the time of writing there was no way to compile the parts of the dump and re flash the ROM
Is there an easy way to do this now?

nandroid backup will restore a point in time copy.
If you're using a2sd do a nandroid+ext backup.
i just did nandroid backup. now what. i load the SD card on my computer and copy the file ?

For safekeeping you can, sure. But when you switch ROMs, if you want to switch back to your current, keep the nandroid on your SD card. Then just do a nandroid restore and it'll put you right back where you were when you backed it up.
o alright i see now. it say in the folder like the date i made the back up and stuff. ok cool, thanks a ton !

No problem. If you want, you can change the name of your nandroid backup. Doesn't matter what it's called. Just don't put any weird characters or spaces in it, and it should restore fine.
I usually name mine something like:
DC_2.0.8.1_5.12.2010_before_screwing_around
yeah thats what i did. i named it like DC rom. fresh 2.0d rom. ect.

How do you do that? This is what is messing me up everytime I switch ROMS as I always seem to get a boot loop unless I wipe my ext and lose all my apps. Then I have to redownload them.
I tried Titanium but it doesn't seem to back up your ext.

Format the internal SD and restore stock, and u should be good.
Just follow diablo's advice. They are not going to check your nv_data.

[Q] My data connection is missing most of the time when flashing any 2.3 ROM ... Why?

So far it has been hit and miss when flashing 2.3 ROM's on my Nexus One.
For example I can flash the same ROM but depending on the order maybe I'm usually not getting any data connection icon or anything. It's like it's not there.
But every once and awhile I manage to flash something in the correct order and it appears. I make a backup when this happens and its fine. However if I want to flash any new 2.3 ROM I have to start the guessing game all over.
Can anyone explain what exactly is happening here or how I can get a data connection every time?
Thanks in advance.
Are you with an odd ball carrier?
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
I have exactly the same issue! After searching/posting about it on here, and across the WWW in general, i was starting to think i was the only person with this problem.
I'm on Vodafone UK so it's not as if it's a small carrier! Somebody suggested using an App thats available from the Market to backup your apn settings and then use it to re-apply them to the new ROM. I've returned to stock now but if you want to give that a try i'd be interested to hear if it helps.
APN Back & Restore will definitely do the job, I've tried it.
MicroMod777 GB included a Vodafone APN, but I used my backed up one just to be sure.

Be good to know if this works for the OP. I tried the Vodafone apn setting when running the ROM you mentioned but that didn't help. Perhaps the app would have done the trick.
I'm waiting for the OTA GB now
I am in Shanghai using CMCC. Thanks for the advice although I'd be lying if I said I knew what APN back means. Could you clarify exactly how to do this? I am a little new to Android. Again thank you all for the replies in advance.

OK I figured out that APN Backup and Restore is a program. Now I have a backup of my APN ... HOWEVER ... Now I have a new problem lol.
The version of 2.3 has no file manager or way to install the .apk file of APN Backup and restore ...
How does one go about installing things without some sort of file browser? IS there a work around for this problem?
Am I missing something totally obvious?
adb install appname.apk

I was having the same issue with Alltel. Here's the deal; If you have access to a back-up of stock, flash it and make sure MMS works. Download APN backup from the market and use it to back-up the APN on your phone. Now flash the new rom. Run *228 or what your network uses for activation. Run APN and choose delete APN, this will delete APN on the phone. Do not delete back-up. Now click restore back-up and choose your back-up. When it is done close the app and reboot. MMS should work.
what do you mean by this part "If you have access to a back-up of stock, flash it and make sure MMS works"?? I'm confused..

You need to get back to the point when you could mms. That would require"stock" rom .
Can you make a more detailed tutorial?
New to flashing and my phone worked fine before i did a line switch.
don't want to have to re flash.
