Got a VZW Galaxy tab. Rooted and got ROM manager & SGS Kernel Flasher.
1. I flash using SGS and it successfully flashes, as it reboots and I can see from Settings->Device Info that it shows the Developer's version.
2. I then go to CWM (ROM Manager) load ROM from SD, chose the ROM which is in update.zip format, I select to wipe date and casche and then nothing.
It gets stuck at the SAMSUNG boot screen. So i have to use Heimdall to restore back to stock VZW Rom. I have tried several times, even after flash just tried to reboot directly into Recovery mod (Power+Volume Down) and same thing. Goes to SAMSUNG boot screen and freezes.
What am I missing or doing wrong???
First thing i would recommend is : uninstall rom manager. It causes more problems. If you did a search on these forums you would find loads more tales of woe re rom manager.
Second thing is: have look through the dev section, at the instructions for installing clockwork recovery. Then look for the appropriate rom for your device.
But whatever you do, uninstall rom manager

Isn't ROM manager ClockworkMod?
I searched Clockworkmod on the market and when installed the icon says ROM Manager though...

Have you tried booting into CW Recovery manually and running the KhasMek.Voodoo.Plus.CDMA.Tab.v5.OC.zip (like the instructions say)?
Your thread header says you are using ROM Manager and trying to run the update.zip package.
ROM Manager _should_ work, but maybe stick with instructions especially if you're having issues.
Yes I have tried going into Recovery manually as I stated in my original post.
I always flashed with SGS kernel flasher as it seemed to work well.
Then I tried manually going to Recovery w/o CWM and gets stuck at boot screen as well.
I tried WITH CWM and same stuck at boot screen.
Tried wiping data through Recovery, through the UI (Settings then ect, ect) and several other combos trying to load the custom ROM.
All I am successul is at rooting, then flashing the kernel. Then no matter which step I tried if i reboot it will get stuck at the SAMSUNG boot screen.
Even if I just turn it off and then turn it back on, after the flash, it will get stuck at the boot screen.
I downloaded the kernal flash directly from the link of the first page. And if the kernal file was courrupt i don't think the flash would go successfully.
I've never used the SGS Flasher so can't say what it would do if the file was corrupt.
Maybe flash it using Heimdall to check the file?
Sorry to hear you are having problems. I am also sorry for the rudeness on this forum. Although I seldom post I read it daily. Here is what I would try;
1. The issue may be with the file name update.zip if you can, rename it to anythingyoulike.zip on you computer and then copy it to your SD card. You may even have to take the card out of your tab to do this (delete the update.zip once the file is renamed). Once the renamed file is on the SD card try to reflash.
2. Have you tried to start again using Odin? There is a good clip on you tube about this. As long as the tab at least starts to boot it is not bricked. Feel free to PM me for any additional help.
Good luck.

When I use SGS to flash, it reboots and i can see in settings that it has been flashed.
If I use Heimdall, it flashes then gets stuck at the boot screen.

Hello everyone,
first off, I'm new to all this. Here's my situation,
I was trying to install a new ROM on my G1 and I found instructions on how to gain root access to my phone. I felt like I had followed the instructions but I can't seem to get the ROM installed on my phone. I downloaded Recovery Flasher and installed it. I chose "Backup recovery image" and then "Flash Cyanogen Recovery 1.4" and it all seemed fine, but then when I rebooted my phone and tried to install the new ROM it wouldn't let me. But I think I know what the problem was, I missed the step where I had to rename the folder of the ROM to "update." I went back to factory settings and tried to re-do the steps but this time, Recovery Flasher gives me the options to:
Download Recovery Image
Restore Backup Image
this confuses me because it's not the same as it was the first time I tried it. Does this mean my phone is already rooted? I tried to uninstall and install it again and same 2 options come up.
I know i was doing it right at first because I got all the correct screens that I saw on the instructions, but now I don't. I've been searching here and all over google to see if I can find an answer but I couldn't so I decided to make a thread to see if someone can help.
Thanks!
AFAIK the one-click method doesn't survive a full reboot, because when you reboot the OS it overflashes the recovery partition again with the original (unless you've flashed a new ROM)
Now your problem seems to be the "folder" bit. You do not unzip the ROM, you put, eg, "update-cm-4.0.4-signed.zip" on your SD card as-is. You also no longer need to rename it to use from this recovery partition.
I see,
well, when I tried it with update-cm-4.0.4 (that's what I was trying to install) it said that the file could not be found, and then I read that I'm supposed to change the file name to "update" and when I did that, it found it right away but it gave me the error "No Signature" (something along those lines) even though according to the place where I download it from, it is signed.
Should I just try to boot into recovery mode again and try it out again? I remember the very first time I tried it loaded the screen with a bunch of options, but now it just has 3, Boot Into Home, Wipe, and Apply SDcard zip, I might be wrong on the exact wording of those options but that's all I get...
and recommendations? Thanks for your response
nevermind, I got it to work! Thanks
I decided to root my phone and try some ROMS last night on my Captivate. Love it by the way except one problem that I can not seem to figure out.
Before I did any flash I used ROM Manager to take 2 backups of my stock ROM and also used Titanium to backup all user apps and data.
Everytime I try to go back to stock and the phone reboots after recovery mode I get the AT&T logo and it never goes anywhere.
How do I get back to stock?
THANK!
If you are trying to restore stock through nancroid backup that won't work. You need to use odin.
What build is your phone? You can find it under your battery, something between 1006-1012
It is 1012. I thought you could just restore from those backups to get back to stock.
I have never used odin before. How do I go about that?
Thanks!
I can not find a good download for Odin. Could somebody provide please?
Thanks!
With your build you need to be careful what odin you use
You wavy to follow this

Clockwork does not restore kernel and modem. You are stuck at at&t screen because your system is ext 4 used on roms, and your nandroid is rfs. Long and short it won't work
So.... I am a bit confused now. Is there even a way to get back to stock at this point?
The link I posted
Your stock is jh7, odin One click is jf6. The procedure laid out in the link will get you back to jh7, although it takes a couple steps.
As long as you can get into recovery you can probably reflash any rom you have on your sd
Yikes thats a tall order to get back. Thought it would be more simple. So it is easy getting to a point to flash ROMS... Not so easy going back.
I'm also stuck in the same vicious cycle as we type.
I got 2 different stock rom backups and a cognition backup and can't get nothing to restore factory. I got premium ROM Manager. I can get into 2 different recovery screens. 1 from the Clockwork v2.5.1.3-voodoo lagfix and 1 using the update.zip on my root. Can't restore anything that gets me past the ATT logo.

What is your build number, under battery
Between 1006-1012
I don't see a 1006-1012 anything. Where exactly would it be listed under the battery ??? ON the battery ? my phone is 3 days old.
EDIT: oh I think its a 1010 ...I think I found it
Thanks for the help by the way.

Have you tried this
Phone off
Hold volume up and down and power
Let go when at&t comes up
Should be green recovery
Select install zip from sd
Choose zip
Select rom file that is saved on your sd, any you may of tried
Confirm
If your lucky maybe you can flash the rom
Uhh ??? Somehow from the recovery mode I just re-installed Cognition 3.04 back on my phone by browsing to the ROM.zip an installing it. I have to charge my phone for a few but I'll definitely come back and tell how I did it after a while. I think it was by browsing to cognitionv3.zip from 1 of the recovery menus insead of going to the update.zip. That beats the hell out of going through all the steps of going back to stock.
Thanks for the help.
EDIT:
Yeah somewhat like above post, only I had the Cognition (red) recovery menu and I went to install .zip and browsed to the cognitionv3.zip on my sd and installed it. *BLAM* back to Cognitionv3.04 I'll work with that till I got more time to mess with the other.

Yep I have tried that. Or at least I guess....
I go into the recovery screen but the problem is the only zip files I have are my custom ROMS. I did a complete backup with ROM Manager of the stock ROM before flashing however it did not create a zip file, it created a folder which contains everything that was backed up. I have tried to restore from that but when I do and the phone restarts it sticks on the AT&T white logo screen.
I am not saying restore stock, I am saying flash a rom. it may get you a working phone
Oh yeah I have done that just fine. I am using Cognition.
I am just trying to find my path back to stock.

Exactly, If you flashed a ROM on the phone the ROM is still there. Just use the recovery mode and choose "install a zip from sd" then go to "choose a zip from sd" then it will let you browse the sd for the .zip(rom) you just had. (not stock). It should be successful. Worked for me.
At least you will have a working phone and you can then look into going stock once you've read up a little more on it.
Just trying to help.
EDIT: oh, OK, I myself was in a panic and had just found that possible.
No problem. Thank you for the help!
I was thinking that when I did the backup with ROM Manager that it was creating a ROM version of the stock so I could flash back. Guess not though.
I've never flashed a rom before. I currently have stock froyo with the paragon kernel i flashed using the app sgs kernel flasher. I have clockwork mod rom manager, I created a backup of my current rom. So then I tried installing the serendipity rom from the sd card but i get an error message. I read on the sticky on how to flash a custom ROM you need to use ODIN and flash back to stock 2.1 then do a master wipe and re root it and stuff.
Their link to download ODIN is broken so I don't know how to get it. And is there really no other way to flash it besides doing a master wipe and using ODIN?
flash to stock and master clear is not needed. what IS needed are specifics on WHAT error message you get when trying to flash the rom you want
The error message is
"E: failed to verify whole-file signature"
"E: signature verification failed"
"Installation aborted"
Then it brings be to the blue menu so i just select reboot system now
bad download, re-download rom.
May be completely off, but it doesn't sound like you're actually in clockwork mod recovery, but rather stock recovery.
But here's the post with the one click odin with mirrors and I personally would suggest useing it since I generally like to stick to as clean a flash as I can:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
Second, I don't know if you've ever seen MobileTechVids tutorial on how to flash custom roms, but I suggest you watch the full series first if you haven't already.
here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MsafJ-9uRqk
I watch the series and try and stick as close to the tut as I can when I'm unsure (or the one provided by the Rom maker as they know what's best for their rom)...
One suggestion, when flashing Serendipity disconnect your phone from cable right before the actual flashing (gave me a glitch in which I couldn't mount storage via usb). Other than that, read read read. I feel it's all I do when it comes to this stuff, but proper research is indispensible.

Ok I got the stock rom flashed back and rooted it using one click. Now for some reason I can't reboot into clockwork recovery mode. I flashed it successfully. So i click on reboot into recovery and nothing happens. I try clicking on install room from sd card and that doesnt work either
Power off, hold 3 buttons att screen will come on. Keep holding. Screen will go off. Keep holding. Screen comes on again let off the power button but keep the volumes held, this will boot you into stock recovery, since you said you flashed cwm already I'm assuming you mean with rom manager, so the update.zip should be on your sdcard, so just reinstall packages twice and you should boot into cwm.

On serendipities main "download" page they have instructions to install. In those instructions is a link to a file you can download. Place that file along with the serendipity 6.3.zip file in the root of your sd card. Use the " 3 button" technique or Rom managers "reboot to recovery" option to get into stock recovery. Hit "reinstall packages" once/possibly twice. That will put you into clockwork mod recovery. Select install zip from sd card, find the serendipity6.3.zip and click power to flash. Confirm. And after it does some stuff it will ask you to reboot. Upon reboot it will as if you want to enable lagfix. Hit plain "Yes". Watch it do its thing and viola...
You have the "dirty" way of how to flash serendipity... But first I please ask you to spend atleast a day reading this forum or others and understanding these instructions and the reasons behind them.
followed instructions off the website and still doesn't work
I was running 2.2 and have done a lot of reading a video watching (thanks Mobile Tech videos) and finally conjured the guts to flash serendipity.
I flashed stock using odin...that went great. Copied the update.zip to sd card. Installed zip twice in 2e recovery. Copied Serendipity.zip file to sd card. started in recovery mode, selected "install from sdcard" selected serendipity.zip file and it seemed to go through that process rather quickly. Then I selected reboot and then everything just started FCing all over the place. Can't even load the stock that I had on there. I don't know what to do. Help please. I can get it back into recovery mode. Tried doing the wipe data/factory reset. That did help either. Help please. I really want to try serendipity. Thanks again in advanced.
Did you run a restore using TiBu at all? Or was it just a straight flash from stock to Serendipity?
Plus, were you running a phone that came with 2.2 out of the box? Or did you upgrade to stock Froyo yourself?

I did run TB and I had originally flashed up to froyo (took me all night one night) and then went through the process I explained and hit the dead end. I finally was able to get odin to read the phone and flash back to stock. It was a learning process. I realized that I needed not only the Serendipity_6.3.zip file but ALSO the kitchen file to included with it. That wasn't in the directions I don't think. Finally got it all on there. I love it now. I appreciate everyone's help. Any word on a how-to for Bluedipity?
I was running on froyo before I started process, and now I cannot boot up. This is what I did:
First I used the step 1 in the cyanogenmod wiki (http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Samsung_Captivate:_Full_Update_Guide) to install the ClockworkMod Recovery, everything is fine, until the final reboot step. after the ATT screen, the screen get into total unrecognized mode, and the unit will restart, and so on and on, in a loop.
Then I tried to use the speedmod-K13E with GB bootloader one click, and I still can't get into the system, but now it just stuck at the Galaxy S samsung screen, after the ATT screen, and no loop, just stuck.
Any suggesstions? Is there a stock rom I can restore back to using the external sd card? the internal sd card currently only has the cyanogenmod 9 on it. I have going through the different posts for the past two days, got really confused. If someone can point me to a step by step guide, or something similiar, really appericiated.
BTW, the recovery mode has the following:"ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.1.0 SpeedMod ULFK
I'm on windows 7 32bit. And I donot need to save any data on the phone. It can be wipe clean.
Did u try rebooting into cwm recovery and try to re install the rom again ?
U may need GB bootloaders as well for cm 9 (?? I'm not sure though)
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using xda premium
If you still want to run cm9 try flashing a more recent kernel inn recovery. look in the Dev section for glitch kernel or devil kernel (i like devil) they have a more recent version of cwm that should work. I haven't used this method with cm9 but it worked with aokp.

well.. my advice is try reflashing to the stock rom using the one click in this thread [Stock ROMs](OneClicks Master Collection)+[Kernels (Stock & w/ CWM)]+[Modems] UPDATED

download one of the odin one click there, and flash your rom back to stock gingerbread, oh yeah, choose the rom without the bootloader.
if that doesn't get you anywhere, please reply to my post.

You should be good to go. You should be on GB bootloaders. Just reflash CM9 in CWM.
Solved.
For some unknown reason, I can net get ODIN to communication with my device, I tried multiple device, and it seems ODIN just does not work.
I used the 3rd post in your link, with Heimdall I successfully installed the KK4 and then I used the cyanogenmod wiki again, this times it works. It seems the old stock rom won't work for the wiki, must use the new stock rom.
Thanks for all the helps, guys.

you're welcome,
glad i can help
Hello all.
I'm trying to update my phone (a rooted Samsung Galaxy S - GTi9000), to Cyanogenmod Nightly build. I have Mobile Odin and Rom Manager installed. And have downloaded the latest Cyanogenmod Nightly.
I have read some tutorials, but I seem to be stuck on two parts:
1) When I try to get into the clockworkmod boot recovery, it doesn't work and boots into the android recovery instead.
2) In mobile odin, when I find my file and load it, it doesn't load anything in the main list that says "kernel, system, dbdata", etc. It just says "none" in all of them.
From looking at some youtube vids at least some of them should load...right?
Now, I may well be doing something simple wrong (hopefully!), but I'm fairly new to all this and its kinda getting to me. Plus, trying to get my head around all the jargon is a bit of a challenge!
If someone would kindly take the time and patience to kindly guide me in the right direction, I would be very, very appreciative!
Also, because of these problems, I haven't tried flashing any roms yet for fear of bricking...
why you dont take cwm via 3 button combo?
there you can add zip and let it install.
Did you read any tutorial? I read about 5h and then i flashed it with problems and i knew what to do. Such questions should be answered in good ones.
Yes, I have tried the 3 button combo. But when I press them it takes me to the stock android boot recovery and not the CWM recovery.
I have Rom Manager installed, shouldn't this give me CWM recovery, or am I going about this wrong?

Got it sorted guys.
Thankfully it was a simple fix. I removed the battery briefly earlier, but nothing happened. Took it out for a good 30-40 seconds and it finally booted into CWM Recovery!
I'm now on ICS.
Thanks a million for trying to help me.
The learning curve is beginning to flatten out!
