So I am flash junky but I have a question.
I was going to flash the latest ClockworkMod but I really don't feel like having to do a full wipe and reload of everything. I am also running Firerat's MTD's. I guess my question is: Is it possible to flash recovery and set Firerat's back up while keeping my current rom/apps/etc all intact? Nandroid obviously won't work because it restores the recovery image etc. as I am running CWM 3.x already but was going to update it.
Thoughts?

You need to wipe everything if you are redoing your FR mtdpartmap OR the recovery, since a new recovery wipes the FR mod. A nand restore DOES work though. SO you would:
nand backup
flash new recovery
wipe
flash fr recovery
wipe
reboot recovery
nand restore
flash fr boot
reboot

No, if you look inside a nand backup the only partitions that are backed up and restored are boot, cache, data, and system. Your recovery will remain intact.

FYI your pic is totally normal, nand backs up recovery, cache, etc. All the stuff in your pic. It does not matter, it doesn't overwrite your recovery, ignore it. I know what I'm talking about, I have done those steps a number of times.

NP. So yeah c00ller was right, the nand does backup all the stuff in the pic, but it only restores the stuff he mentioned, plus ".android_secure" and "sd-ext" (if you use it). I'm sure my names are off, but yeah it makes FR a lot easier with nand

Nandroid doesn't actually restore the recovery image, it only backs it up. And to answer your question, yes, you can install the new recovery without having to wipe out everything.
All you have to do is use ADB to flash the new recovery FROM WITHIN RECOVERY, and then immediately flash fr-recovery before doing ANYTHING else.

Yeah... not sure... to setup Firerat's MTDs, it states to wipe boot, cache, data, system... then flash fr-recovery... then wipe system, cache, data again... reboot into recovery... flash rom etc... then flash fr-boot. Hmm... maybe all those steps aren't needed if it has previously been setup before flashing a new recovery?
He also stated in ALL CAPS to flash the new recovery WHILE BOOTED INTO RECOVERY. I usually flash a recovery via adb when my phone is booted up into a rom, then adb reboot recovery. Flashing it while booted into recovery work differently rather than flashing it while the phone is booted into a rom?

One thing that I thought I should mention. while in recovery I tried to flash_image recovery and it failed saying it could not access my recovery img. So after a couple of tries I figured out I needed to mount my sdcard from the "mounts" menu in cwm, then it allowed me to flash the recovery. Might not be a common issue but I added for what its worth. Thanks everybody.

Oh ok and I am using the stock recovery. I tried amon_Ra and clockworkMod but hey both do something wrong cause everytime I do a backup something on my phone doesnt work afterwards or the recovery doesnt work and the Stock one is working perfectly fine.
You're welcome!
For good measures, you should wipe everything and then flash your recovery TWICE, and then reboot into recovery mode -- flashing it twice usually ensures a healthy installation without problems.
Attached is a flashable zip of CWM 5.0.2.0. I successfully installed the file from CWM, CWM Touch, and TWRP.
Good luck!
(All the usual warnings apply: flash at your own risk, etc., etc.)
____________________________________________________
Back Story:
Today I was flashing an alternate recovery when I got stuck at the boot logo. I (foolishly) had no other zip flashable recoveries on my phone. Since I had no PC access, I was SOL until I got home. I searched the forum and found no flashable standard CWM recovery. So, I decided to make one.
Do yourself a favor, save a copy on your sd card and hope you never need it!
I think all recoveries in THIS thread can be flashed via recovery. Just choose the zip format and colors of your choice. I've tried before flashing via TWRP. Anyway, thanks for sharing.
You are correct. And romracer's recovery is great, but I wanted CWM.

Question - why is it necessary to format /cache before flashing? I mean, the recovery log is in there (/cache/recovery/log).
I don't get it. A recovery that you can flash from recovery in case you can't get into recovery?

Not exactly.. It's when we wanna change recovery to others. Like changing TWRP to any button recoveries. But,we still can access recovery. If we can't access recovery, the only way is by flashing image format via fastboot command.
Before I made this file I analyzed other zip flashable recoveries, and they wiped cache as well. I don't fully understand why myself. Maybe for the very purpose of clearing the recovery log? Maybe because we are taught to always clear the cache before flashing anything and it's just a habit?

I could access recovery. I just couldn't get past the boot logo. I did say "boot loop" instead of "boot logo" in the original post (I corrected that - my bad). Was this the source of your confusion?

I think he was confused about why would you want to flash recovery if you already have a working recovery? And if you don't have a working recovery, a flashable recovery won't help. IE, he thought this is for emergency purposes, but in case your recovery is malfunctioning.

Having a flashable recovery if your recovery works allows for easy switching. I'm not (yet) a touch recovery fan, but some roms require them.
I was trying to install a touch recovery when the install failed (bad download I think - I downloaded another copy and it installed fine). My phone would not boot past the logo, but I could boot to recovery. I pulled the battery and tried to reboot a few times, re-flashed the recovery, fixed permissions, etc. to no avail. I had no PC access, so I couldn't fastboot a recovery. So, I had no phone for a few hours. During that time I was wishing I had a recovery flashable recovery (if I hadn't recently deleted a copy of romracer's recovery from my phone I would have been good to go). I made one, pulled my sd card and loaded the file, replaced the sd card, booted to recovery, then flashed the recovery I made. The abridged version is the back story in the OP. Anyway, that brings us to the whole point of this thread.
Edit:
I think I set a record for most times using the word "recovery" in a single post.
Although I do appreciate your contributions... I refuse to do any flashing whatsoever unless I have PC access or it's already a dire emergency.
Nandroid -> Titanium Backup -> MyBackup -> Image SD Card (With all three backups) to desktop / laptop -> blast everything on phone to kingdom come -> begin whatever flashing that I probably shouldn't be doing...
Probably overkill, yes; but your remote flashing with no PC access? You sir, are a brave soul.
Normally I am almost as cautious as you. But I was at a really boring offsite meeting. But, I learned my lesson.

Hi
I just tried flashing ARHD 20.2 coming from rooted stock 4.1.2 via CWM touch. The rom won't install, halfway through the phone just re-starts. Also whenever I try a factory wipe or data re-format from cwm my phone re-starts immediately. So I have recovery but I can't flash a new ROM.
Have I corrupted my data partition somehow? Is there a way around this? Maybe via a new recovery or kernel? My searches on xda haven't come up with much. Any ideas? Thanks.

HI, thanks for the advice although I don't understand what you want me to do. I guessed you might have meant try going back to stock which I just tried but that didn't work. I do not seem to be able to flash any ROM.
I can enter in and out of CWM recovery but that is it. My phone is formatted and wiped (excepting my suspect data partition???). So I am doing all flashing etc by adb and fastboot.
I tried a TRWP flash over the top of CWM but it only briefly flashes the twrp logo and then restarts the phone, so I have gone back to CWM which at least works.
In my CWM log I see this
I: Can't partition non-vfat: datamedia
I: Can't format unknown volume: /emmc
Any attempt to format data still just restarts the phone.

I have an HTC One on sprint, running a CM11 nightly. While I liked it for a while, due to business aspects, I need to go back to iphone. I am just gonna trade someone I know for my HTC for their iphone. I guess what i was wondering is what is the process of returning it back to stock? They still want root access, just not a custom ROM. I'm S-ON, HBOOT 1.56.000, Radio, 1.00.20.1100, and OS 4.06.651.4.
I'd like a step by step process hopefully (not an expert on androids, more used to iphones). But i do have some experience with cmd. I was also wondering if I turn it back to stock, will i lose all of my data (contacts, photos, etc.) I know you lose apps, but when I flashed to CM11, I backed up with TWRP, and then had to use CWM, so i couldn't restore my contacts. I do have a backup of my original ROM before i went to CM11 in TWRP, but I had to flash to CWM, so I'm not sure if it's still there.
Also, if they wanted to keep the CM11 on it, would there be any problems switching phone numbers and whatnot on it? I'd assume not because it still has an IMEI, but just wanted to make sure.
Find a flashable zip of twrp and if you didn't delete it ur backup of ur stock rooted should work...u have to have Sprint base Rom to swap phones so NO cm11 will not work when you go to trade phones

tried to no avail. I tried and it was stuck on HTC logo for 15 minutes. I reflashed to CM11, and im downloading the RUU now to completely wipe/restore it. Unless i did something wrong? I erased cache using adb, then booted up, restored my stuff, and it said successful, but it was on the htc logo. I tried again to the same thing. then i reflashed cm11 and it worked. did i forget to do a factory reset before i restored everything? it said it wiped stuff before it restored it.

after you erased cache did you flash recovery, then reboot recovery and restore a backup
when you are on the htc logo hold the power button down til it reboots and see if it goes past the htc screen
you don't have to factory reset to restore a rom just hit restore and select the backup

I flashed recovery, then erased cache, then rebooted to recovery, and restored a backup. when it said successful, i rebooted from there, and it vibrated on bootup, but stayed at the htc screen for a while. I held the power button and rebooted. same thing.

I had stock JB and I had this program in menu "Software update" and it was an 19-25 mb update..I downloaded and I installed the update then the phone rebooted and it went in cwm recovery. If I install a custom rom everything seems ok, after reboot it enter straight to recovery and I don't know why.

If you set up working stock JB follow this:
*prepare custom ROM, kernel and Gapps then copy to SD
*if you want CWM download this: http://download2.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.4.5-p880.img, then copy *.img file to a folder where adb is installed and rename it to recovery.img
*boot to fastboot mode (adb reboot oem-unlock)
*install recovery in fastboot mode (fastboot flash recovery recovery.img)
*power off, then boot to recovery
*flash ROM, Gapps and kernel

You don't really need different kernel, for first start I suggest you official CM11 nightly
Hit thanks if it helps

I recommend you not to use this kernel, it is deprecated. Try without flashing different kernel first. Which CWM did you download? From link I gave?
EDIT: Have you done formats of /system, /data, /cache ?
You bugged out your device. OTA doesnt work properly with custom recovery installed. Reflash kdz to fix the issue, but try grabbing everything you need from via adb from recovery first as you may have to do hard reset from stock recovery which will format your internal sd (in case you dont know how to flash custom recovery via fastboot)

You can reflash or put phone to stock state with using lgmobile support tool. Just put phone in S/W mode (volume down and USB cable plug in) and in dropdown menu select update recovery

yes, you can. the bug you encountered only happens when you use OTA with modified stock firmware.
good luck :good:

Ok, I got it. Thank you! One more thing, I swear it! When I try to root my phone (I follow this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1818502 ), the SystemBackupTest doesn't work, I googled the problem and I found nothing.
