CM7 latest nightly Wifi issues - Nook Color General

I just flashed the latest nightly(#85) over 7.0.3 stable. It flashed with no issues, but I noticed that Wifi is cycling on and off. I tried nightlies #83 and #84 and all do the same thing. I restore back to the latest stable ROM and it doesn't have any issues. Any ideas?

I'm having some problems as well with 87. It was running for a while, with weak signals... and now it just stopped working altogether. I tried a hard reboot and still the same. Tried to fix permissions and reboot again, still nada. It's like it's not detecting any network at all.

I never get why so many people have problems and so many others don't.
I was having issues on 7.0.3 but since I've went to N87, I've had little if any problems.

This makes me hesitate- I "was" going to make the jump from stable to nightly's--not sure at this point!

I also cannot get the wifi to stay on. I prob will go back to stable with OC but does anyone know if 7.0.3 has the sleep of death fixed?

Try it, just about all my wifi issues disappeared with N87.
It seems to be some people have the issue, some don't.
No one seems to know why.

It does not.

ive had no wifi issues with n87

My wifi issues are this:
Noname Generic wifi router at work using WEP: Rocksolid
Trendnet Cheap wifi router at home using WEP: Rocksolid
New Belkin wifi router at home using WPA: dropped wifi every few minutes.
So I guess it depends on how much security and speed you want from your router.

CM7 Wifi Needs to be restarted every 3mb

Ok this is not your typical "my wifi wont connect issue"
i have tried a fios router, linksys cisco router w/ dd-wrt and linksys router stock. I first had cm7 on sd and assumed that was the issue so I flashed to emmc. It works great but the wifi stalls after about 3mb of transfer (or a couple of minutes of light usage) and i have to restart wifi with the power widget and it starts working again. EDIT: droid x and moto bravo work perfectly with these routers at the same time of the issue.
I already disabled wifi sleep policy.
I am using CM7 stable installed to emmc. its works fantastic otherwise but this is making it completely ususable for me. I dont think its a bad wifi chip since wifi was solid with HC on sd and seemed fine with stock nook 1.1.0
if i try to install an app it dies 75% through, if i try to play a youtube video it buffers 75% and then dies. it seems anything more than a simple web page lookup kills the wifi stack.
I havent had time yet to really dive in (been porting CWM to the motorola bravo in most my spare time) but hoping there is a simple fix out there, maybe i need to switch to dalgrin's kernel? but it also mentioned wifi issues and seems 2 weeks older than the kerenl supplied w/ cm7 but i am not sure.
This makes the nook completely unusable. Id rather not flash something else, it seems other people are having success w/ cm7 so I would like to work this out.
any ideeas? thanks
that sounds like possibly defective hardware honestly.... But you say it was fine on other ROMs so I dunno. I have had fewer problems on CM7 than Froyo myself. In fact CM7 has been solid with wifi. I wander around a lot with my NC and use many access points.
Do you have a logcat dump per chance?
If nothing is in the log, what is output of dmesg? Anything there that might suggest what's going on?
Also you might try checking out the command line program "wpa_cli". See if it helps you narrow down the issue. You can turn on additional debugging there.
Or, if you know how to rebuild your uRamdisk, appending "-DD" to the wpa_supplicant line in init.encore.rc would also give you more info in logcat...
One last thought-- if you are using dalingrins oc kernel, he took out a lot of debugging stuff (for speed), so if you want more info, revert to cm's stock...

I hope its no hardware, its over 30 days old, i didnt get the extended warranty and I have a ghost armor on the screen
good to know your wifi is solid w/ cm7 and its not a general cm7 wifi issue. what encryption are you using?

Hello-
Its very unlikely to be Nook issue. I have had this issue with laptops and its always the ISP or the router.
Hope this helps.

I had almost identical symptoms. I disabled encryption on my router and have had zero issues since.

Check out my thread on wifi http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=959823&highlight=dummies
My guess is that it's something in the wifi chip driver ir the wifi software stack. I have the identical symptom where on youtube, it stops after a few mb of download. (Note for mine it was stock NC with auto-nooter 3.0.0) The fix for mine was to set the router to 802.11 g only. So try this test:
1. set the router to 802.11 g only
2. turn off encryption
Let us know what happens.
I'm thinking that these devices have varying wifi quality.
My Nook Color is rock solid with wireless, regardless of encryption. WPA2 AES works as well as no encryption. I use my NC regularly with about 5 different access points around town. I'm using Dalingrin's 1100 MHz kernel with CM7 stable.
On the other hand I have a Motorola Droid that barely works unless I either turn off encryption or go to 802.11b! Those Droids were rather notorious for poor wifi. It does the same thing the OP mentioned - it stops transferring after a few megabytes although it says it's still connected. The wireless must be disabled and re-enabled.
It's AES, plain and simple. Turn it off on your router. if you're using WPA2, set it to WPA.
Your problems will go away. Now go to this thread, star it, and add your info please: http://code.google.com/p/cyanogenmod/issues/detail?id=3314

Lol I was 99% sure of this. I had the same problem on 2.6.29 kernels on my dx. it magically went away on 2.6.32.
I am using AES, I was going to try to turn it off next, now I know
thanks.
Fattire, thanks, I checked wpa_cli and it just fails to find anything and the scans fail once the issue happens.
The one thing all those routers I tried had in common was AES, its the only thing I really trust. I guess i will have to setup a stub network and seperate AP for the nook color
thanks!
After setting the AP to WPA2/WPA Mode the Nook's wifi is working perfectly under CM7 (except for needing to be restarted after the screen is off when sleep policy is on but i beleive this is a common documented issue)
thanks!
I posted on the cm7 thread and hopefully they will get this fixed asap.

CM7 Nightly + Dalingrin's OC Kernel Wifi issues

Hello,
So Using CM7 latest nightly along with Dalingrin's latest 2.6.32 OC kernel i cannot seem to get WiFi to work whatsoever (using all 14 channels). WiFi just says "Disconnected" and will not connect to any network. I have tried flashing multiple different CM7 Nightlys, wiping the cache partition and dalvik cache (although whenever i wipe dalvik cache in CWM it freezes...), all to no avail. Every time my WiFi still does not work.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks,
Moriarty
The system that I am using right now is built with the following pieces:
-- generic-sdcard-v1.3.img
-- gapps-gb-20110307-signed
-- update-cm-cm_encore_full-98
-- update-CM7-dalingrin-OC-sd-060911
This system has been up for about two days and seems to be ok with no wifi problems.
Good luck.

Thats what i am using now but it still does not work... I am not sure what the reason is, OC kernel will also not go above 925Mhz....
I'm having an odd issue with wifi too... though not as bad. I can connect fine, but every reboot turns the wifi off. I have to turn back on and all is fine again.

Mine has always been like that... I wish i had that small of an issue
I wonder if this is just a worse version of the Wifi issues that sometime plague NCs? I thought that the nooks have trouble connecting to different forms of encryption and whatnot.

Are you sure you installed the OC kernel correctly? That is the top OC for the stock nightly kernel.
Not having wifi issues with n100 or the latest OC kernel; I did in a much earlier nightly only for my home router but it turned out to be one of these router-related issues: a) it was on a very crowded channel, which I changed b) was running TKIP/AES which I changed to TKIP only (seems to have worked for others here so I tried it as well).
Have not had a single drop since, and I've used it at Starbucks, several university wifi hotspots (different buildings), and at home.

Well, in About it says my kernel is 2.6.32 which i would think meant that i installed it correctly... Although not sure if my Dalvik Cache was wiping correctly, seeing as it would freeze immediately after wiping

All the nightlies past 77(? I think) run on the 2.6.32 kernel. My kernel version running on latest Dalingrin OC kernel is 2.6.32.9 [email protected] #63. I'm not sure if this changes with updating to OC kernel at all, I usually just know OC kernel is flashed correctly when the higher clock rates are available in CM7 performance settings.
Dalvik cache wiping on CWR 3.0.2.8 freezes after the wipe. The latest version, 3.2.0.1, fixes that issue.
Using CM7 on SD card
I recently decided to try out a nightly and picked 98. Did not add overclock kernel just used it as it came.
Been using CM 7.0.3 with overclock to 1100 and have had no problems with wifi, browsing speed or Force closes. Only problem is battery life is not great.
Nightly 98 seems to be great for battery life, but wifi has an intermittent problem. When I wake it up in the morning from charging I find I cannot get a wifi connection unless I reboot it.
Wonder if others have same problem.
I have gone back to CM 703 as the battery life is not as inconvenient as I charge it every night anyway.
Do you guys have the wifi manager app installed?
Like I said my system have been up for more than two days and wifi seems ok:
-- the wifi is off when it goes to sleep and comes back up when I wake it up.
-- I watch movies on Netflix and it is up for as long as I watched the movie
-- there may be some small problems but I have not seen them yet
i had this too. There is a bug with airplane mode : if you use it, then uncheck the airplane mode it stay marked as checked in internal cm7 settings, you can uncheck it with this app : https://market.android.com/details?id=com.advancedprocessmanager&feature=search_result
YES
Ok, THANK YOU This led me to searching for the answer and eventually finding it.
The SQL didn't really work for me but this did (and it is much less tedious)
1. activate wifi
2. go to wifi scanning
3. Forget one secured SSID
4. add a secured SSID: (Manually type in your WiFi Name + Password)
Hope this helps anyone who accidentally enables Airplane Mode and ends up with this bug....

Got Nightly 98 + OC 0613, and I always get wifi connection issues after deep sleep, if I left Wifi on beforehand. Have to reboot too then. But it's been an issue for me for a while, with previous nightly and OC too.

Frustrating wi-fi reliability issues

My Droid 4 seems to have issues maintaining a wi-fi connection to some networks.
At home, it will connect and work for a while, but eventually stop passing data. It will still show connected, though. It will stay in this state until I turn wi-fi off and back on again.
At work, it often has issues connecting and will show "authentication problem" even though the credentials are correct. With enough trying, it will eventually connect, but won't stay connected.
iPhone, iPads, PCs, Macs and other types of Android phones work OK on these networks.
My old Droid 3 had the same issue.
On some other wi-fi networks, it seems OK.
What gives?
I'm currently a recent build of CM9, but it did the same when it was stock 2.3.6.

Ugh, me too and it was driving me absolutely crazy. I'm on AOKP now (think the build from a few days ago) and it (WiFi) works perfectly now. I know this, because mobile data keeps dropping (argh) but I'm still getting e-mail, etc (but I can't send MMS at least).
Most days I am in solid WiFi coverage, so I am dealing with dodgy mobile data in exchange for stable WiFi. Anybody know if eclipse fixes this issue?
Edit: I'm glad you made this post so I know I am not crazy. Part of the changelog for the 219 update was a WiFi fix, and I was very disappointed when it didn't seem to help...

I've been on Eclipse since it was first ported and I have never had any data issues on 4G/3G or wifi. But I've only connected to 2 or 3 wifi networks so I could just be lucky there. 4G/3G connectivity is perfect.

Yea, I really do have to check Eclipse out. The only thing holding me back is that I'm getting (what I consider) stupid-good battery life with AOKP. Plus, I just did a factory reset on ICS to fix notifications, which means I just set everything back up
Have you spent any time on Wifi using the stock ROM? I'm lucky to get half an hour of Wifi connectivity before it just dies (but still pretends to be connected). No problem with wireless tethering (AOKP or stock). Sometimes I am convinced they don't actually test these things before pushing them out...

I never had any problem with stock either. I would run it on wifi all day at home on a Saturday and never had any drops. I just set up a new router last running dd-wrt so we will see how that goes.
You should definitely check out Eclipse. You lose a few of the ICS goodies but it's totally worth it in my opinion not to have to worry about data dropping out. Battery life has been phenomenal for me on Eclipse. I've been getting through a whole day with 40% - 50% battery left when I finally plug it in a night.
Just backup up your current ROM in safestrap that way, if you don't like Eclipse, you can just restore your backup and your back on AOKP with everything just as you left it!
I've used AOKP for over a week and I don't recall having wifi issues. Which build were you on? I used nightly 29/4. Now I'm back to stock because of BT and Camera. Other than that I had no issues.

I haven't really tweaked it or anything. No undervolting/underclocking or anything like that. I have the 4G toggle installed and switch 4G off when I'm sitting at my desk at work and I'm connected to wifi when I get home in the evening. I don't do anything special other than that. I am still running version 1.3.7 as a couple of people have reported that 1.3.8 broke auto capitalization and not having that would drive me nuts.
Guess I wasn't clear enough. Both on AOKP 29/4 and stock 219 I encountered no WiFi issues. And I use it a lot. I have to because when I switch to 3G for faster internet I loose audio (GSM 3G not working yet). So what I mean to say is, not sure what your problem with WiFi is or where it's coming from. I ran AOKP for at least a week. And I've been running 219 since I got my phone (except for that specific week that is). Not once has WiFi stopped working or glitched for that matter.

I have a variant of this, I've tried with both the .03 and .04 radios, it's the same, so it's not the radio itself:
I lose coverage so I get the wifi icon with the exclamation mark, instead of it reconnecting automatically. Switching wifi off, then back on, allows me to use wifi again.
I'm using the NX5 AOSP ROM, 5.0R6 (LRX21T)
We all get different experiences, but it sounds like the root cause is likely the same.
Give as much information as you can (Android version, radio, which particular ROM, usage), otherwise it's impossible to understand what could be causing the issue.

I guess I'm just wondering if these are issues are due to not starting a clean slate. I typically try to do a clean wipe of the internal NAND whenever it's a major revision change (4.4 > 5.0).
But if the bugs are persistent for those of you who did a clean install...maybe it's better to hold off for now.

as for me, usb tether always turns of itself when i wake/turn the screen on
stock image rooted using CF
wifi works fine
Mine would lose connectivity, meander about for 30 - 60 seconds, and reconnect. I set the WiFi antenna to 2.4Ghz (from Auto) and turned off "Scanning always available" (although I doubt the latter had anything to do with it) and it's been fine ever since. This was on a clean factory install -- no root, no OTA update; pure OEM Lollipop ROM.
Whenever i go to settings > Wifi settings the phone freezes for a couple of seconds and then it crashes. This happens like 70% of the time.
Anyone else having this ?

Only thing i have noticed so far is the recent apps bug that shows up sometimes

yup, wifi issues for me.
Notice it when I get home, my wifi will not connect and when I go to check the settings it has been turned off. So of course I try to turn it on but everything I try does not work, I am unable to get it to turn on. Only a reboot will get wifi working again.
Not happy at all about this. and a couple of other features. Now I'm wishing I never did the update. Google you have taken my expensive smart phone and turned it against me.

It could be a combination of your router and something they've changed in how Lollipop handles networking.

I have the same issue. On my Nexus 4, I just set it to 2.4 GHz only, as 5 GHz has never worked since 4.3. I can only connect if I hold the phone up to the router. On my Nexus 7 where 5GHz actually works well, I like the fact it prefers 5GHz.

WiFi stops working

I noticed that WiFi stops working on my new G4 pretty often. The WiFi icon is on, and the connection is "up", but the data transmission stops working. I see the top arrow blink (is that transmit?) but the bottom arrow doesn't come up anymore. Trying to do anything fails and times out.
To fix, turning the WiFi off and back on makes it all work again.
Anyone else experience this problem? I know @jonathan3579 reports the same issue.
I am connected to 5 Ghz using an Asus RT-N66 running Merlin firmware. I have no issues with any of my other devices.
Using the "Switch to mobile data" option helps a bit by falling back on LTE when the WiFi stops working.

I have tried the option to switch to mobile data when WiFi unavailable, but still have issues. May just go back to my G2 running Cloudy 3 ROM .

I didn't seem to have this problem at work, so I'll monitor it again today (I just got the phone 2 days ago).

I'm having the same issue at home. I could be watching a video and suddenly stops. I don't know if it has to do something with root. I noticed it starts happening yesterday. I never had this issue and I got this phone sine 5/27 when it was released. I'll do a factory reset.

I'm not rooted and mine has done it ever since I got it (and did a factory reset before setting it up). I doubt resetting yours will fix your problem.

Are you having this issue everywhere you go or just one specific place?
I had not noticed it at work, but I only got on the WiFi yesterday for a little bit. This morning it failed on me, so, that's two for two. Haven't used it in many places.
The hotspot works great though. I tether an iPod Touch in my car automatically whenever I drive and I haven't noticed any issues there.

I'm at work and I have been watching multiples videos and no issue at all.
I just noticed this today happening to me too. =(.
Pretty great phone otherwise! Also connected 5ghz to a RT-AC68U (the T-Mobile cellspot), flashed with an older Merlin firmware.
Had to reboot to get it to behave again.
Me too
I've been having this issue too. I've noticed that I lose data and WiFi calling simultaneously. I thought it was my router because we were having issues with the router dropping phones and laptop, but now with a new router it is only my phone that is having a problem.

Running DNSet has definitely helped with keeping the data flowing, and I appreciate that.
WiFi calling is still dropping. When I look in the settings it says "enabling" and just hangs.
What internet provider do you have I'm assuming Comcast

This issue appears to be due to the 5ghz radio. I am not sure if it is software or hardware, but if you connect to the 2.4ghz band, the issue will go away.
Its most likely a issue with lollipop

Lollipop on the G4 maybe, but I have used a Nexus 6, a Moto X and a Dell Venue 7840, all running Lollipop, without issues. The G4 is the only one that has this issue. I never tested my old G3 on this network with Lollipop, I sold it before the update rolled out.
Problem fixed?

I switched to 2.4 ghz and WiFi calling appears to be staying connected. My provider is Oceanic Time Warner and my router is T-Mobile cell spot.
Fingers crossed and thanks for all the help.
Did these wifi problems start after root?
Mine were happening before root, I think. I switched to T-Mobile cell spot router right before I rooted because my old router was regularly dropping connections, and I have been paying attention more since I rooted. I am also caring for 11 month old twins, so things are kind of a blur. What I am saying is I might not be the most reliable source. I can say that switching from 5ghz to 2.4ghz seems to have solved my WiFi issue.
