[Q] strange sim notification - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

my sim packed a sad yesterday and would not make any calls or join the network, i had it replaced and since have had a strange icon in the notification area, when i check it there is no message and no option to clear it? when i get other notifications i can clear all and it'll go away for a short time but always comes back, it looks like a sim with a small gear on the bottom right, can anyone help?

Your sim is empty, thats all

Thanks but sadly not, the sim comes pre programmed with voicemail and customer services etc which are showing up

Have you checked your APN settings? Sometimes they have to be manually entered. If the APN list is empty its pretty easy to search for the settings using some good ol' googlin'

Someimes My Nexus One won't send text messages or make phone calls unless I reboot :(

I have an unrooted ATT version of the nexus one. Randomly about 1 or 2 times a day while I am texting I will get a failed to send message and no matter how many times I try it just keeps failing. It won't allow me to send texts to anyone else either. however I continue to receive texts which is kinda odd.... the worst part is that always while this is happening I cannot make or receive phone calls this is very frustrating since I could be missing phone calls and wouldn't know it until I try and send an SMS or make a call. I have tried a lot of different things such as setting my bands to USA and setting my network preference to WCDMA Only but to no avail... I also tried a factory reset... also if I try and toggle airplane mode or turn off the radio it just crashes and I need to reboot.. if i try checking the SMSC while this is occurring but hitting the refresh button
I get refresh error and if I try and update it with the correct number I get update error... I really love my N1 and would really appreciate anyone who could shed some light on this issue
Re: My Nexus One won't send text messages or make phone calls unless I reboot
Could this be an AT&T network issue? I had similar symptoms with my HTC Hero (admittedly running EDGE) in certain parts of San Francisco earlier this year. It seemed to be the result of network congestion. Does this occur in a city or other urban area?
Sent from my Nexus One using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
I am actually not on AT&T I am on Rogers network in Canada. I am living in Toronto so the 3G coverage is really good and I`ve never had this kind of issue with my previous phone which was a BB9000 and none of my friends seem to have any of these problems
I also found ppl on some other nexus one forums describing the exact same problem which leads me to believe its not a network issue but I am still not 100% sure I tried calling Rogers and had them do a cancel location and it didn`t fix the issue either
I had this issue only this morning and I'm in the UK, I put the phone into Airplane mode and back again and then everything is fine.
I have this issue about once a day.
Running the newest Cyanogen with no other modifications. Radio is the most updated one available.
Flipping to Airplane mode and backed worked on my G1 if I had an issue similar to this but the Nexus doesn't respond to it.
I reboot atleast once a day to fix this. -- Not sure if it's the radio or Cyanogen.
Anyone else have some input?
EDIT: Should have included, I am on T-Mobile
This actually happened with me today, a text kept failed and didn't get pushed through until I reset the phone. I'm hoping this doesn't turn into a daily thing
next time this happens if it happens again could u guys try and make a phone call before resetting so we can see if our problems are identical?
Thanks
This sounds like a problem I have had for several months now on T-Mobile (I just bumped the thread under the "General" topic to see if there were any developments, as I've been away from the board for six weeks or so). The symptoms I have are that the signal strength icon in the status bar shows zero bars with an "x" and the home screen says "No service." When I attempt to power off, after a while the spinning arrow stops spinning, the trackball flashes once, and then the phone reboots (takes about 45 seconds to a minute after I initiate the power-down before the reboot starts).

I am unable to make phone calls, send texts, etc. until I reset. It has no impact on Wifi but kills the cell network completely.

I also have a long delay after hitting restart when I get this issue. Maybe Ill try to get a logcat and see what it gets stuck on..
I'm getting RMA'ed, again, for the same issue plus not being able to register on the network after I get the x with four blank bars. I get either "error searching for networks" or "sim is invalid on this network". It's since fixed itself... somehow but i was without any phone service despite trying everything (calling tmobile for network outages, hard reset, reseating the sim card, other stuff) for about 3-4 hours twice now... and a few shorter time periods (1-3 minutes of those errors) before that.
Possible solutions.. which I've only done after it started working again but didn't cause anything bad to happen. So far have been without any of the previous issues, plus my original long standing issue of not being able to send texts, get any sort of data, or call (I call it the up arrow without a down arrow problem where the phone is trying to connect but doesn't receive anything back). These solutions were originally posted here:

http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/android/thread?tid=47dc569ca9667ba7&hl=en
They're also solutions I've come up with for my issue as well and seemed to have worked for a couple of others.
It's as follows:
*#*#4636#*#* and selecting phone information. Press the menu button and select the proper band. I'm guessing if you're in canada on rogers which uses the same band as AT&T US you'd select USA band. Anyway after selecting it should re register on the network.. close out of there. Turn off and turn on the phone and see how that goes. For people in other regions I have no idea what to properly select but it was posted on one of the threads on the google forums that it should be "automatic". Check with your provider and/or google tech support.
Another thing I've seen is again in the *#*#4636#*#* menu under phone information put in (THIS NUMBER IS ONLY VALID FOR TMOBILE USA) under SMSC 12063130004 and press update. Call your provider for your number. Restart the phone.
Less likely solutions (in order of descending likeliness to help you in your particular case):
Hard reset and/or verify the APN settings for your carrier. I've been told non factory default APN values for tmobile over the phone (google support) so I don't know if verifying them or asking for them will help or cause more issues but sometimes there's apps the mess with the APN values which could cause some of your issues. So while this has a high potential to help, it's easy to screw up. Hard resetting the phone will give you factory default values (I'm 99% certain but from what I remember). Changing them from non factory default isn't a terrible thing however call your provider rather than google tech support for the values.
Calling up and asking to add/verify the IMEI number to the network (i never did this until recently although it didn't fix my issue right when they added it anyway) and/or doing a network cancellation might help. Unlikely but if you' RMA'ed once they'll have the wrong one on file and could cause issues depending on the network.
Replacing the SIM card. Takes literally 30 seconds. They ask for account info at the store, they scan the new one.. and give it to you. You pop it in and go. If you have an older SIM card this DEFINITELY could be the issue. Its unlikely its defective but it's always worth ruling that out.
Let me know if any of these help.

I`ve tried all the solutions u`ve mentioned except for swapping to a new SIM card... I guess it might just be my next step but I have my doubts
I get this kind of issue occasionally, under these specific conditions only:
1. I'm at work.
2. I bring my phone with me into an area with no signal (screen says no signal, and I have 4 blank bars with an X) for more than a couple of minutes (for me, it's the room with the coffee machine - which I use a lot - no provider gets signal there on any phone).
3. It doesn't always happen, just sometimes, but when I go back to my desk, it won't reconnect.
4. Going into and out of airplane mode fixes it every time. However, with the latest CM and Ivan's Diet kernels, going into and out of airplane mode causes an immediate reboot when I try to come out of it, and only when I'm NOT connected by USB and when I AM coming from "dead" service, making logging the problem, well, problematic. Using other kernels (even OC'd kernels) does not seem to cause this airplane mode problem.
Only had this happen once trying to send a plain old SMS. I restarted the phone and no problem. I didn't think of trying to make cell calls, but if it happens again, I'll try that.
I too have had this issue with SMS. My browser works though when the SMS problem occurs. Haven't tried a phone call. I am on T-Mobile USA.
Are any of you using task-killers that may somehow be interrupting an important background service?
I have the same exact thing happen and I am on T-mobile US. I was hoping that I wasn't the only one but it seems to happen on all of my phones so I have just chalked it up to network congestion. Unless someone has an actual answer.

Have any of you edited your build.prop yet?
This helps with the switch from Edge -> 3G -> H.
I wonder if it would fix this issue.
I don't have the issue so I am unable to test myself.

I am using Advanced Task Killer Free, but I'm pretty sure I added important background services to the ignore list so they shouldn't be killed.
Just to double check, what background tasks shouldn't be killed?

[Q] "Refreshing Sim Data" annoying pop ups

I've got an unlocked Singapore i9000 with the European JG1 firmware installed and using it on AT&T in the US.
The phone frequently pops up an annoying message about "refreshing sim data". It pops up, then fades away on its own.
Other than the obvious, what does "refreshing sim data" mean, and why does it do it so often? This is the only phone I've owned that does that.
Any idea what's going on behind the scenes (either on the phone, or at AT&T) when the phone pops up that "refreshing sim data" message? What's refreshing on the sim or the phone, and why does it do it so often?
On an interesting related note. The sim I am using is from my iPhone account on AT&T and is grandfathered in with the true unlimited data plan. What's interesting is that usually when I put the sim into another phone, like say my old Razr, the AT&T website almost instantly reflects that I'm not on an iPhone with that sim at the moment; with the i9000, the sim's been in it non-stop for almost a month now, and AT&T still reports me as an iPhone.
get this too, what is this?
I'm still getting this...
No one has any ideas? I've noticed that AT&T Web site now reports the phone as "unknown" but they haven't monkeyed with my grandfathered unlimited iPhone data plan (yet).
I get this on my captivate too. It happens on both Perception and Assonance roms. The only other thing I can think is that I have an old Cingular 3G sim card so maybe that is acting funky with it.
Anyone figure anything out with this?
I'm starting to get this too ever since I installed the Pheonix Rom on my Captivate. Never had this problem before. It even sometimes cuts off service when that pop up shows up.
I just started to see this on the new Cognition 3.0.4 rom for the captivate also. Any ideas?
I'm seeing it on my Captivate with Perception 10.2... I also have the old unlimited AT&T iPhone data plan. When I log into AT&T, it shows I am using the Captivate.
One more here. Paragon RC5 didn't do it but RC6 does. Phone is a Captivate with an iPhone sim card and data plan.
I started seeing this to when i started using JS8(my own) and see it using Darkyy's JS8. I only see this when I have my usb unplugged.
Possible rom has wrong CSC for the network you are using .
I have a manually entered network as its not on any CSC sim pops up and i just choose O2 UK as its the carrier for the network i use .
Result no more pop up .
Or change CSC to cover your current network .
jje
Hi.. I tried to select the network manually and the "Refreshing SIM Data" pop up stopped popping up.
I think as JJEgan said, it is the wrong CSC that is causing this pop up.
I have a locked SGS2 to 3 UK, which I unlocked and is using it in India with a different carrier.
You guys could try selecting the network manually. It may not be a problem if you are not travelling very often or going out to a different carrier circle.
sounds like a problem, ive seen on other phones, i got it too on my galaxy s when i first got it on stock rom was 2.1 update #1.
is there actually a option to show/hide sim service messages like some nokias have? this is only a suggestion/idea of-course not sure if the galaxy has this option
I have an unlocked galaxy s3 that I bought from the UK. it isn't rooted and uses the sim card from my rooted streak and, before that, from my FUSE. U.S. A&Tt. that's supposed to read AT&T. in this Galaxy, I run only the samsung stock upgrade (2.3). I have had this message from the first day I turned on the unit--approx every ten minutes all day long. if no one on the xda forums can solve this problem, then it's unsolvable.
Got internatial version of SGS2 and on AT&T, getting the annoying message from day one. After reading the article, I decided to choose network manually, but there wasn't any manual selection menu. So after network scanning, I saw two (strange?) AT&T network popping up and selected one of them and now the pop up is gone for now. I feel awesome with it gone.

"Refreshing Sim Data" annoying pop ups in SGS 3
Hello all,
I just bought SGS 3, 2 days back. After 1 day of impressing me, it popped up this irritating msg "refreshing SIM data". After trying all the solutions which did not work in my case, found out a new solution.
Try this,
Settings → More settings → mobile networks → Network mode → (select) GSM only
In my phone GSM/WCDMA (auto mode was selected).
BINGO as soon i made this change, the pop-up stopped
Write to me if this helped you.
When on 3G , it need GSM/WCDMA , so its not a perfect solution ...
So, vinodbluey, if you're still around, did your fix work permanently for you?

Problem with a notification that won't go away

Hello,
I got ignored everywhere I posted this issue in nightly threads and such, so I decided to make my own thread about it.
So here it is:
My carrier is Vidéotron and my plan is unlimited calls/texts in my "zone" which is the Greater Montreal area.
So, the problem is that, in my notification bar, I have a notification with the icon of a SIM card saying "Zone" when I'm in my zone (Montreal) and "..." when I lost signal or "Partner" if it goes on the Rogers network. This notification keeps staying there and doesn't go away no matter how many times I click it. BTW, clicking it does nothing at all except close the notification bar -_-
This does NOT happen on the stock ROM and only happens on CyanogenMod (both 6 and 7). That said, I did try MIUI but completely forgot if the icon was there...although I am about 85% sure it was there. Any ideas on how to disable that notification? It's quite annoying, especially in landscape mode where it takes so much space in my notification bar for nothing...
Last thing: This DOES happen to all Vidéotron customers on CyanogenMod
Thank you for any help you may provide
It's a long shot, and the only idea I've got, but do you have settings>cyanogenmod settings>user interface>date and provider settings checked and or unchecked?

Thanks for the reply!
That setting is nonexistent in CM 7, so can't really test it on this one, but I remember I had tried that several times while I was on CM 6 and it didn't do anything except remove my carrier's name from the lockscreen and/or notification bar.
I don't think it's really a feature since it seems that only Videotron customers are experiencing this thing...I believe it could be in the way the SIM card handles the roaming status...must be somewhere deep down in the code
If you or someone else come up with an idea, I'll be glad to hear it
If not, I'll probably post a ticket on the Cyanogen bug tracker or so...

Wow, thanks Rusty!
Worked perfectly!
I'll go announce that on the Videotron forum, the people will be glad to fix that too
BTW, does it have any impact on anything else? What is that file used for exactly?
Again, thanks!
It's the SIM Tool Kit app, some mobile banking things need it apparently, but it's something left out of the stock ROM so can't be that great.

Zone remover
FYI
This app removes the zone icon (sim card) from the notification bar of the phone. This is a common situation for customer of Videotron to determinate if the customer is in his Zone or not.

Notification Icon?

Hi,can anyone tell me what the notification number means on my phone (No.1).I have had my phone for over a month and it has been there since the first time i switched it on from new.I have been looking at other members homescreens and no one else seems to have this? Picture of my homecreen will show you what i mean

I think it's indicating what Line you are using on your phone
Some operators like Orange give you the ability to have 2 phone numbers/lines on 1 simcard
Cannot understand why it would be that as i have had the same sim card/same network on PAYG for years in lots of other phones aswell, strange but i need to know how to get rid of it sick of seeing it now.
Well i tried a different sim card and the number is still in the notification bar! Anyone else have any idea what it could be?
Not got a clue pal, i've never seen that before.
Does factory resetting your phone get rid of it? If not it's probably sim-card related.

yes, can confirm that..although LG´s way to implement this in statusbar is very odd..
Found it under settings/additional settings there is an option to select line 1 or 2 but no option to remove it from notification area.By selecting line 2 it just says call settings error unexpected response from network. If i call my network would they be able to do anything to remove the double line setting if it has anything to do with my sim?
thanks to all replies

to get rid of that, I would:
- edit frameworks
or
- make a morph
How do i do that? bit of a newbie still learning, phone is rooted and running Modaco's custom rom FR15 but any chance of explaining more on editing framework ?

GS6 Active Network Issues Unlocked

Hello! I Had my Blue Camo GS6 Active 64 Stolen last sunday, Bought A White GS6 Active 64GB Model to hold me over and its in real good condition. But its Network Unlocked and noticed the setting on my 32GB Black And my old Blue 64 phone were set to GSM/UMTS. This for some reason is stuck on WCDMA? I Don't even see a GSM/UMTS Option and was wondering what i should do here?
I Did a few system updates thinking it may automatically work but whoever had the phone before must of changed something, even a Factory Reset didn't solve the issue. So i get the phone in the mail, power it on and everythings good no SIM yet but it had 4 bars, Pop in the AT&T SIM and restart and bam No Signal at all. I Changed it to GSM And get nothing. I Notice if i set to LTE/UMTS When i'm up the road it actually pops up 4G LTE And works too! But i get home and Poof No Bar. Its probably cause it usually does get knocked down when i walk inside to 4G But never no bar.
Anyway i can Flash a Stock OEM Modem? Or a way to force the Network settings to Reset to OEM? Had this... well that GS6 Active for 3 years never had an issue but mine was AT&T Network Locked i never unlocked it. This is Network Unlocked and notice a lot of what seems to be Foreign Networks? Network settings I've never seen before that's for sure.
Help will be appreciated!
Really need this to just work by Monday and AT&T Support sucks lol! Best buy couldn't help me, 3 AT&T Stores couldn't help me cause they don't sell it anymore and i didn't buy from them. But i know its fixable i mean i get signal if i flip around to the WCDMA Setting when i'm home, And before i walk outside i hit LTE/UMTS and i do get a 4G LTE Signal when i get up the street. but i'd rather it Automate like it did before so i don't have to keep doing this.
Yeah this sucks, Like Mint White 64GB S6 Active. Just this i didn't expect. I've Switched sim cards back and forth, took the sim out and tried to change the band but that doesn't work. I've gotten to the Network System menu and put everything on Auto. I Have it set to LTE/UMTS and i get nothing, i take the SIM Out and restart, 4 bars are there. put the SIM In and Boom no signal. I've tried to change the GSM/UMTS Band to Automatic but it just says Unsuccessful. But i have that feeling if i can get it to say Successful it will work.
Anyway to use my laptop to connect via ADB And Force the band to change to auto? Or anyway to get it to stick to Stock settings? I Still suspect whoever had this before did something to the Radio and Network settings and i can't figure it out for the life of me. AT&T sure won't help me lol! And Samsung just wants me to bring it to a repair shop. While i was actually at a few repair shops around here and they know nothing about these.
It's the only phone i'm comfortable with. The S8 Active is ok but without physical buttons it doesn't really serve me like this did... and i don't really care for Bixby button can't be customized. Also noticed Otterbox doesn't make Defender series cases for it so i'd have a bit of trouble getting a beefy case on it.
Ahhh.... i get some signal in WCDMA Preferred. Fixed a SMSC Issue so text's go out and i receive them if i move around a lot.
Signals still bad not like it used to be. Why do i get a Signal On WCDMA But not GSM Auto Or LTE/UMTS? Is there anyone that can help me get to any advanced network option's or a way to change the Band to Automatic? I Try to select Automatic Band which is the default i believe and it just says Unsuccessful.
Have you tried just refalshing stock rom???
I know you already have done this but sometimes it doesn't work first time(few have mentioned issues that took several flashes to solve it)
The reason folks are not replying is quite possible know one has any idea why this has happened.
I had an s6 Active that everything worked other then 4G and nothing worked.. It was a factory refurbed and Unlocked. And no matter what I did it simply would not worked... I returned it and go a replacement... It suggested it had been damaged internaly in someway..
Can you return yours for a replacement/refund???
Sorry am not actually able to help.
regards
Lohtse
I might return it. I figured out why messages were not sending i messed up the smsc settings lol!
Very unique issue here i see 4G pop up and i get calls and data flows. Sometimes 4G LTE magically appears and everything stops working till 4G shows up.
Pretty hard to find this GS6 Active in 64GB anymore.
If i take my sim card out and dial *#*#2636*#*# i think? Or it might be *#*#0011*#*# it brings up network options. I notice if my sim cards in that menu shows up empty. Something maybe wrongly set in there but not sure how to tell. Never found a way to successfully set the GMS/UMTS Band. And with no way to really root it or change anything through the pc is probably going to make this even more difficult. Phones in great condition though i dont think theres damage i believe its a network setting somewhere i missed... or at&t sucks lols! Every sense i got robbed on the 18th its been nothing but a big problem getting a phone working again.
Reflashing stock rom? Like Android 5? Its in Android 7.0.1 now. Id be interested in doing this but going back that far is spooky i dont wanna destroy it. Ive seen people say its possible and others say its not possible to go back.
That would probably work though! When i got my S6 Active Camo Blue 64gb New it was Android 5.0.1 and i think more network options were available. Then in 7.0.1 they all disappeared.
Never had issues on that phone i can't believe it was robbed from me. Not like i dropped it or lost it either it was robbed from me! Police did nothing even with the fact they threatened to kill me and everything. Police did nothing... and after 14 hour shift im not exactly ready to fight with 5 people.
