I just updated to the latest version of Google Maps, 5.5.0
It now seems to take forever for the app to load new "areas," and navigating the app itself is significantly more sluggish than normal. Is anyone else experiencing this?? As of now the app seems close to useless. Vector mapping is enabled, as was made default in an earlier update.
Edit: I think I fixed it by going to Cache settings > Clear map tile cache
I notice that the maps load differently, the image tiles in the background load first then the street names, which is how it worked before but it looks and renders differently. It's probably doing it asynchronously.
It is much slower now, but I'm thinking it could be server side.
It's reasons like this I don't let ANY apps auto-update. Thanks for the heads up. Please keep us posted on whether it's fixed or not
It does look a little different, but it could be all in my head. It seems sharper, almost. After clearing my cache as stated in the 1st post, the app is bearable again. However, panning and loading new content still seems slower than 5.4.0.
BTW, I don't let any of my apps auto-update either, but that's just because I like reading the changelog. But I might as well have it checked since I'm not cautious like you, and just want the newest version ASAP

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know why our browsers have to reload the page even though you are just going "back" one page. For example, if I visit Gizmodo, then go to engadget, then back to Gizmodo, my browser has to reload the page instead of using the cache. It seems as if the cache is barely used (granted the reload is a little quicker, but not much).
Is there a tweak or program that can make this better? It is really frustrating, especially if you are trying to browse a page and accidentally hit the wrong link, which requires you to fumble for stop and oft times requires a reload (this is one reason I miss the Hero browser, because it had a stop button in the address bar).
Hmm, I've noticed this as well. Perhaps Android thinks you need to refresh the page? I know with apps like Opera Mini, pages back (somewhere around 10) are completely stored which is a very nice feature, but as to why Android doesn't do this, is a mystery .
I know the larger files, like images and chunks of text, are saved to the cache, but not whole pages. That would get pretty big after a while, and would slow down the browser because of access times. It's the time the Browser takes to draw the page is what's creating the lag. Look at Opera Mini again, the page loads instantly because it's zoomed out first, then you zoom in.
try "steel" browser.
@ phuthanvinh: I have tried "Steel", but it really isn't any better.
@lukekirstein, yeah, that is one nice thing about Opera. It loads cached pages almost instantly in most instances. When I need quick information, I always turn to Opera. If I want to browse for pleasure, then I use the Android browser.
It would be awesome if a Developer could implement some type of Webkit add-on that forces cache of the whole page.
I just wonder if the "lag" is not caused by redownloading, but rather stems from Android using software-based graphics decoding instead of using the onboard graphics chip. At least that is what I have heard.
I have the same issue and it's very annoying when I'm using google reader!
Have you find a solution?
Does anyone have a solution to prevent android browser to reload pages already load in a tab after I come back from another tab?
I hadn't used the desktop app before so when I heard it was out for Android it piqued my interest. I downloaded it and although it has a few things missing (lists and hashtag searching I think is missing) they're not important to me. Anyway the purpose for me posting here is to check if anyone else using Cyanogen's Mod v4.2.5 has issues with notifications not happening. This, for me, is the second app that doesn't run as intended using CM ROMs and I don't like that one bit. Before I mention it to Cyanogen I want to see if I'm the only one having issues.
I'm having a few problems, too. Sometimes the program will crash when opening/closing the keyboard, sometimes it will freeze when switching tabs, etc.
I don't think it's CM's issue. I'm having a lot of FCs with it on Amon_RA's ROM as well, think it's just not stable enough.
I mentioned it to them via Twitter and they said they'd look into it. For an initial release the interface is really good I think but notifications are a must. To make sure it wasn't the ROM in general I've tried three separate ROMs now and ran another Twitter program at the same time, same interval updates and the other program (I Tweet) got all updates. Stupid thing is when I was reading them I got Seesmic telling me there were updates now. I'm sure they'll fix it but they better do it fast or the ratings will drop it.
hi everyone,
with the G2 coming out next month, I think this is gonna be my last attempt at getting my G1 working acceptably.
for those of you that would like to skip my sob story/history, you can skip to the next paragraph. i've had a G1 since july 2009. even though i do love it and android, the thing has constantly run horribly for me. constant lag, a history of force closes (although lately none of that luckily), lots of freezing, restarts etc. i've gone thru tons of different roms, currently on e-Xtreme 2.1 version 1.3. had lots of experienced people from these boards help me with flashing, setting up, reflashing, flashing again, setting up again, formatting my sd card, trying different setups, unrooting and rerooting. we've tried all different kinds of things to get me running well. i'm also at this point using NO widgets except the google search bar and the power widget included in 2.1. when i go to running services all i have is android keyboard, quick search box, gtalkservice, twidroyd, cm updater (impossible to shut off it seems), and setcpu. still i get constant lag from everything from opening messages, to opening websites, to getting back to the home screen, to pretty much everything. forget about loading the camera, it can take like 15 seconds sometimes! i frequently use cachemate to clear my cache. honestly right now the phone is working pretty much the best it's ever worked, but its still awful. also sometimes when i get back to my homescreen my icons don't show up. it's actually bad enough that sometimes i will just not bother doing something i wanted to do cause i dont feel like dealing with it lagging and/or freezing up. and forget about widgets. haha.
ok so, you may or may not have skipped all of that, but at this point, i want my phone to run better in a last ditch effort to maybe be able to stick with the g1 until my full contract is up in july 2011. if not i'm doing the early upgrade and reupping my 2 year contract and getting the g2 next month... what i'm wondering is maybe theres an app i have installed that's eating up memory in some way and is a known issue. i've searched around but haven't found anything about these, and rather than sit here and delete each one, one by one, waiting to see if the phone runs better, i figured i'd just type out a list and see if anyone knows of any known issues with any of these... so here it goes:
astro
barcode scanner
cachemate
calwidget
color flashlight
craigsnotifica
dolphin browser
droidball
drop
facebook
frontiers demo
googles
google sky map
gscript lite
last.fm
latitude
lyric droid
magic gem II demo
movies
myspace
nesoid
news and weather
newsrob
orbs knockoff
painting findings
pandora
pingdroid
replica island
rom manager
setcpu
springpad
soduku free
tangram master full
throw a panda
that's it. i really don't think that's so excessive. i mean theres only like 5 or 6 games in there and some of those things like setcpu, facebook and cachemate are pratically required for proper phone usage. and i wouldn't even bother having a phone without twidroyd and newsrob.
so has anyone heard of any known issues with lag caused by having one of these installed and/or one of these doing something in the background that slows stuff down?
thanks so much to anyone that helps. i'm willing to give this one more try. maybe even wiping and reflashing one more time, but after the dozen times i have already, i think i might just be expecting too much haha.
thanks
Dave
Question... I am noticing that basically every app i download is a little jerky in performance and does not mirror the flawless navigating experience the core os apps offer when it comes to smoothness... Is this a result from them being stored on the sd card? Or can it be from lack of optimization? Because if its the first, its quite dissapointing to see that this is gonna be the expected performance of most apps you download...
I currently have facebook, twitter, flixter movies, lazyworm twitter, xbox live extras, and a few others and i see hiccups in all of them when panning and scrolling compared to the browser, contacts, email, etc.
considering the sd card is integrated into the overall hard drive, I don't think it's that.
Maybe because it's the first round of apps for the OS.

Click to collapse
yea...eventually they would update them till they get them running smooth ...for example facebook app runs choppy
The hiccups seem to be occuring in these first-release un-optimized applications. They also seem to occur most often while the application is actively loading data and you are trying to use it.
Some apps work fine, and if you notice, most apps will work just fine once they have completely loaded any and all information on the screen. I find that after waiting a bit for Facebook to load everything, it pans and scrolls just as well as the underlying OS.
That being said, since I notice some apps can load data and run just fine, that its just more a developer side issue than the phone/OS. I'm sure as devs get the hang of programming and optimizing their apps we will see much better performing applications.
thanx for the replies guys!!! seems like this is the issue and not the memory card (thank goodness)
here is the article to prove it

i love my HD7 again
My experience of The Harvest was actually ruined by the lag/stuttering issue, especially when enemies were loading. I would think that this is probably caused by garbage collection issues in the .NET CF.
I'm running CM 10.1.3 RC2 on my Nook HD+ (as is; no other tweaks) and was disappointed to see my reading experience fall apart with the latest update (which brings "HD" comics to the app). The main page opened very slowly, downloads wouldn't complete and the app froze whenever I tried to open a book.
So I deleted and reinstalled the app, which meant redownloading all of my comics (the app defaulted to grabbing the "HD" versions). The app at least opens and books download now, but the performance definitely took a hit. This is odd because the Nook HD+ seems like it should be more than capable of handling it. While the new interface is really cool, there's now a bit of lag in some of the page transitions and scrolling quickly takes a few swipes to "catch" a page and results in a second or two of blurriness before the page is fully rendered. Not the end of the world, but it's a drag after the buttery smooth experience of the previous version. To be honest, I didn't really see a different in the HD comics (Comixology already looked awesome on the Nook HD+ screen under the old app). I'll try redownloading the non-HD versions and see if there's a difference.
Curious to know if anyone else experienced this and/or if there are suggestions to otherwise improve the performance. I bought this thing specifically for comics and am really bummed out about this.
Large downloads now not working...
As an update, I wiped the tablet with a fresh install of 10.1.3 (stable) and the app seemed to be running much better. Still going with the non-HD downloads as I really don't see a need for it.
Still having a problem with the Nook choking on larger downloads - trade collections are getting stuck at 8% while single issues seem to need a minute or so to start the download (but the single issues come through just fine). I've tried clearing the cache, force-closing the app, rebooting the tablet, etc., but no luck with the larger books. Comixology support suggested that I hit Restore Purchases under Settings, but that didn't seem to make any difference. Feeling frustrated as I really want to read these particular books.
Another note is that I can't read any titles when the app is stuck trying to download something - the books are listed, but I get a blank screen whenever trying to open one. What else can I try to get the large downloads working?
