Hi,
Does anyone know if going "too high" with a card on the G1 would be a waste ?
I currently have a class 2 samsung which does 5.6Mb/s write and 14Mb/s read - and loading the drawer (takes ages .. as sometimes also the desktop, even I did "keep in memory")
Would it be beneficial to go for a Class 10 ?
As the rom on the g1 is so small, like everyone else, I need to keep 99% of stuff and apps on the SD - so I think the performance issues are purely related to the SD
Thanks.
Nick
Class 2 is pretty slow. I bought a class 4 card and I am beginning to regret it really. I could have got a class 10 for just a bit more, but it was out of stock.
I would take a look at prices for class 10 cards, personally. I haven't owned a G1 very long but as I understand it, it's worth going for a faster card as you will be storing more on there than you would be with a more recent Android phone.
Thanks !
Will go for Class 6 or 10 depending on price. Still it seems my class 2 performs as a class 6 (nearly) .. and that some low cost Class 10 are closer to Class 6 !

That could be true, but if I remember correctly the class refers to the minimum sustained transfer speed, so in other words your class 2 should never drop below 2MB/s, and a class 10 should never drop below 10MB/s, etc.
When doing transfers to and from my class 4 I often see around 8MB/s.
At least that's how I understand it, correct me if I'm wrong anyone.
Yep - that's the definition it seems.
So back to the original question, it seems that it's always worth having a better class of SD, and there are no particular limits on the device side relating to the speed it can transfer at.

Basically, yeah.
I think it's more important with a slower device such as the G1 though - if you have a Samsung Galaxy SII with a 1.2GHz dual core processor and 1GB of RAM, well, you're not exactly going to need a swap partition!
And also it comes in handy having a faster card when installing apps to it, as the G1 has very limited internal storage as well.
got that.
Yes .. the limited user-space on the G1 is so painful.

I know that there's been several threads about memory for HD2 before, however I just noticed that Kingston has made some 16 GB Class 10 cards.
That means that the read speed is 10 mb/s which is pretty darn fast compared to most Class 2 cards, reading only 2 mb/s.
But ofcourse, these cards is a lot more expensive (about 60%) so my question is if it is worth paying extra for that speed? Will the HD2 even be able to read that fast from the card?
Here's a link to a retailer, its danish sorry, but you should be able to figure out what it says.
http://www.getmore.dk/detalje-side.aspx?ProductGuid=SDC10/16GB-2ADP
well i got myself a 16gb class 10 card (Kingston) and am very happy with it.
i did a small test with a couple of high quality movies on all my 3 16gb cards (classes 2/4/10) and on the class 2 i get small freezes in playback, on the class 4 virtually no freezes and with the class 10 absolutely no freeze at all
this testing was done by myself and i am pleased with the class 10 card (and secretly wish i had one with 32gigs)
PS: All cards had the exact same data on them
can the HD2 even reach class 10 speeds?

i dont think it exeeds class 6, however i dont have a class 6 card around
there is however a difference between classes 2, 4 against class 10
the reason of me getting a class 10 was simple, they didnt have the class 6 i ordered left and couldnt resupply so i got the opportunity to get this one at a reduced price instead, which i of course accepted
big files are best copied over via usb adapter/card reader anyway (as it goes much faster) and there you will love the class 10 by lengths
Good choice, atleast you can look at replacing the phone in the future and still have a fast enough card or use the card in something else if you need the speed. was the class 10 expensive?

depends, for swiss standards the full price is a fairly reasonable 129.00 swiss francs which would be approx 80€ or so. I did however get it a bit cheaper than that
I reckon there are some tests involved by tokolosh, and that must mean something
But if I had to talk with my own experience... I'd say class 10 microsd's are useless to say the least.
My test was simple:
1) got a class 2 sandisk 16gb off singapore or something for ~30euro
2) put inside an SD adapter and tested with my linux laptop, got 7M/s writes and little less reads
3) put inside the HD2, and under Seven I get little more than 3M/s writes when connected in disk mode via USB, and surprisingly more than 7M/s reads
4) never had any lags of sorts during video playback, and I usually watch tv series on my phone, which have higher bitrate than movies (~170MB for ~20 mins).
So I'd say that as long as it's sandisk, anything class4 or higher is partially or totally useless

I am looking to buy a new microSDHC but I was wondering if it is worth it to get a class 6. Is HD2 capable of maximum reading/writing on a class 6? or class 4 is enough?
noone knows the answer for that one?
I guess you'll need to find out the specs of the cardreader of the HD2. You need to find out what the read/write speeds is and then compare it with the microSD to find out which class is the best to use...
Oh yes they do
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=756781&highlight=card+speed+test
get the fastest class you can - is there class 10 now?
There is, even in Poland . But what capacity are you looking for :relic? If for 4 Gb or 8 you won't need class 10 or even 8, 6 is enough. Maybe for 16 GB card class 10 is acceptable, but the SD will cost you really a lot. I have class 4 16 GB kingston in my HD 2 and it works perfectly
I've been using the stock class sd card for running android. I have been happy with the performance. Don't expect miracles with higher class cards. I say put your money toward a higher capacity card.
And remember the higher class cards consume greater battery power.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Yea try to go for higher capacity, I just got a 32g says 6 speed on it, and does seem to transfer quicker than the 2 speed i had, but im not convinced. a two speed will still let you watch all your films and music no probs. just slightly longer to put the files on it.
Johnwalk go in my thread listed on the same page and post the spec there.
I just bought a kingston 32gb class 6 micro sdhc but when ever i put it in my hd2 it just freezes up and as soon as I remove the card it works fine again. At first i though that it was a fake so I:
1)performed multiple tests,
2)reformated a 1000 times,
3)even putting 20gb of data just to make sure.
Turns out that it is authentic and it works perfectly on my girlfriend's htc BalckStone it also worked when I installed NAND (which i later removed due to insufficient memory).Ive been searching for days, I think its a windows mobile issue, any tips??
is the nexus capable of handling a class 10 sdhc? or should i just stick with a class 4/6 card?
Yes, but you're not really going to gain much by using a class 10.
i figured that but will it help with usb2.0 transfers?
i have one
its faster than my class 2 one, thats for SURE.
now, i never had a class 4 or class 6 to compare
dang. anybody? i want to get a 16 gig card. can't find any info to the performance of a class 10 card on nexus one. i don't want anything less than 6 though which is still about half the 90+ dollars a class 10 would cost.

I use a class 6 and it's fine. If you want fairly cheap sd cards, go to microcenter. They have their own brand and they're much cheaper than the name brands. I've had mine for over 2 years and never had a glitch.
a little info for the general user...
well, after doing some research here and there, it seems there is little reason to get beyond a class 6 card for the nexus. there is very little chance you will even reach 6 through an usb cable. it seems the most common speeds are 1-3 MB's a second. i generally get a little over 2 MB's and sometimes up to 3. the only reason to get a class 10 card is if you manually take out your card and slap it in a reader and directly transfers large files such as mp3's and video, especially if you do it often.
as far as this SDHC card crap goes... THEY ARE NEVER as fast as they say.
I bought a class 4 card and it said on the dealership that it's 4MB/s transfer. Put it in the phone it went 1 MB/s.. WTF.. put it in a card reader... 1.5 MB/s.. returned it and demanded money back.
Then I got a class 6 from transcend. It's marked as 10 MB/s?! .. going on 4 MB/s sometimes 5MB/s in the phone. haven't tried it in the card reader though.
so my advice to you.. buy and return them until you are satisfied
if i buy a class 10 card will the HD2 actually be able to read/write at those speeds as opposed to a class 6 or is there some internal limitation. i will buy a good quality card and test the speed when i have it.
i know that on a pc it will be faster but thats not what i want to know.
i intend to run android on sd and want the quickest card the hd2 will actually make use of.
I understand any above x 6 is wasted, use the search function suprisingly it works
Depending on what you're using the card for, you might be better getting class 2 or 4... especially if you go with Sandisk, which I recommend. Higher class cards have higher sequential write speeds, which is good for digital cameras or transferring large files, but they usually sacrifice their access times and random read, write and access speed. That's why more class 2 and 4 cards are compatible with WP7 devices than class 6 and 10, and also many have had issues with freeze-ups and performance issues when running android off a class 6 or 10 card when a class 2 or 4 performed better.
Higher class cards does not mean better in all situations, which a lot of people don't seem to know. Generally for phone use, class 2 and 4 are better. Class 6 and 10 are designed more for digital cameras or file storage. If you're going to be running apps or OS's off the card, or anything that needs to access many small bits of info quickly, Go with a high quality class 2 or 4 Sandisk.
Class ratings on cards are very misleading to people and people put too much importance in them... they only rate sequential write speed. It doesn't tell you anything else about the card, even though the other things are more important accept if you're using it for digital cameras. A new rating system needs to be made, especially since smartphones are so popular now and microSD cards are used more for cell phones than digital cameras now.
@zarathustrax: ok, thanks for the insight.
i will just get a good name card.

Someone managed to LEO T8585 WinMo show 32GB on microSD card?
i bought one but LEO displays cotinuosly 16GB without reset, then soft reset, then i make hard reset. I just wanna say WTF?
and custom rom is: HD2O v.19, rom is stable and wery good and i think its not rom issue.
thanks in advance.
I'm using a class 10 32gb card.
Not noticing any speed advantage over my class 4 16gb card, except for freezes because the 32gb card is not supported...
Thus you're better off using a slower, compatible card, as long as you want to use wp7
Some 32GB cards will only offer 29Gb of space. So do not only pay attention on the speed, the actual capacity will differ as well.
Some os's use 1024 * 1024 * 1024 as GB others use 1000 * 1000 * 1000, hence the difference with 32GB and 29GB (29.8GB). So no worries
Hi guys, I am about to purchase my galaxy note next week and I was wondering if anyone could shed some light into the matter..
Which class of micro sd card should I buy? (minimum) I was hoping to get a 64gb but if that would underperform, there would not be much of a sense to it.
The maximum reading/writing I will be doing in the note is probably playing 1080p playback + mirroring it to the tv. maybe some hi definition video recording as well straight to the memory card.. but most often than not, I would play a 720p mkv movie.
Would a class 4 suffice? Any suggestions on which brands I should look at / stay away from?
Class 4 of any decent brand should suffice.
Class 2 cards from Sandisk will also suffice (their read/write speeds are enough for 1080p encoding and decoding). May be a hassle if you regularly transfer a lot of data to and from the card since thats the time when the slower R/W speeds will come into play.
Why get anything less than class 10? If you can afford a Note, you should be able to spare another $20 for a fast sdcard...
class 10 cards can cost upwards of $80 for an 8gig card.

i picked up my class 10 a-ram 32gb microsd for $49.95AU + shipping.
it really depends on what you plan to use your note for. if youre filming 1080p video at the default 17mbps, thats about 2mb/s that you'd want minimum for just filming. so any speed should be fine as long as its above class 2. i just prefer faster cards since theyre getting cheaper.

I've read class 10 doesn't always mean fastest read speed or something to that effect. Not always beneficial to get a class 10 since it writes faster but doesn't always means it reads faster. Someone else can probably elaborate for me.

A-RAM is the brand. i bench'd it. write speeds are 11mb/s, read speeds are 14mb/s.
it was one of the random daily specials they had at www.shoppingsquare.com.au a week or so ago.
right now, the next best deal they have is http://www.shoppingsquare.com.au/p_276323_Kingston_32GB_Class_10_Micro_SDHC_Memory_Card

normally read speeds of class 10 are still higher than write speeds. but the read speeds dont really vary much between classes. my kingston class 10 reads at 12mb/s, my a-ram class 10 reads at 14mb/s, my sandisk class 2 reads at 10mb/s. so if all you need is read speed, then any card will do.
even class 2 or 4 on Sandisk it will work fine. i believe just buy a good make one ( not a fake from China ) , but i bought mine Lexar class 10 and work great , i couldnt be happier.

It doesn't necessarily write faster either!
All the class indicates is the minimum sustained write speed under optimal (i.e. unfragmented) conditions. It says nothing about the read speed, which is what is generally important in mobile devices since they are usually used for content consumption rather than creation.
As NZtechfreak has already mentioned, Sandisk Class 2 cards almost always well exceed the class minimums - I've been using 16gb Sandisk Class 2 cards in my phones for a long time now, and I've yet to get one that had a write speed less than the Class 6 minimum of 6MB/s, and the read speed has always been 20MB/s or above.

Dave
A good read why Class 4 cards are the best ones to use for your smartphone: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14456360&postcount=42
I started out with a Kingston Class 2 32GB I had laying around, and then switched to a Class 10 32GB made by PNY that I got from Microcenter for $59.95.
There was a very noticeable difference in photo taking lag and the media scanner, plus app access on the card. Now there is almost no photo lag, from snap to saving. Haven't messed with the video much yet...
I've Samsung class 10 32 gb. It's really good, but my device started rebooting because of it. "System Process has stopped working."
What I found out is that after removing my micro sd my device is a hell FASTER than before!!!
Maybe a faulty micro sd, no since it works fine in my pc and other devices.
I want to check does any of you have the same problem???
