Hi. I am concidering to buy a Galaxy Tab 10.1 from the united states. But i was wondering if it would support the norwegian GSM network ?
Somehow i got the impression that Europe and USA have different types of technologies to connect phones to their carriers..
Becase we have _INSANE_ taxes here in norway, i'm guessing it will be much much cheaper having a friend sending it overseas from the us.
But i need to know if its compatible with norwegian gsm-based network.
Edit: will all tabs be cdma only?
Also: bump
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA App
Theres no way they will all be cdma, and what are the networks you use?
Some will be gsm, some not (i think verizon is cdma, tmobile is gsm; gsm needs sim card). Just make sure that the model you buy requires a sim card. Then it will work. Alternatively you could get one from Canada.
It's possible, but consider two things (as above)
1. get a GSM tab (onw with a simcard slot)
2. have it unlocked (sim lock removed)

Unfortunately i dont know anyone that lives in canada. I need a friend that can ship it directly to me, with a note attached to it saying "happy birthday" or something to get away with the taxes from customs.
There are two types of GSM Tablets in the US. One is from AT&T, the other T-Mobile.
Both tablets support 850/900/1800/1900mhz bands so if your carrier is on these bands you should have no problem getting it to work. Whether its 3g capable or not, that's a different story as at least in the US only AT&T has the tri band UMTS necessary to get 3g and voice capability.
You can go here to read about sim unlock.

One of the top reasons I chose Xda IIs over Xda IIi was for its quad-band capability. And now, with the latest O2 Asia Blue Angel ROM installed, there is the option to switch bands easily.
But I need your help to understand the practicality of bringing my phone to the U.S. and using it there. I have no idea at all how things work over there.
Can I get a new number with a new SIM card? Or do I have to do something else? And will I have to change the ROM I use? Just the radio? All these questions are begging for answers.
I await any suggestions you may have. Thanks.

You will no prolem to use Blue Angles in US , if you XDAIIs is unlock than you can use any sim card in US,but you only can use T-Mobile or Cingual in here others carriers not a GSM system.
Thanks for that info! Now, just to clarify, by "any SIM card" you mean T-Mobile or Cingual SIM cards, which are indeed available in the U.S.?

yes,you got it
Hi again. Getting closer to the date of my trip to New York. I've already started looking into getting a new SIM for the trip, but I still don't know:
1. Must I flash with a different ROM (I have O2 Asia ROM right now)
-or-
2. Must I simply flash a different Radio version (I have 1.15 now)
-or-
3. Can I forgo all flashing and simply switch to a different band (Settings>Tools>Options>Band>GSM 850)
I'm hoping the third option is viable - and why shouldn't it be? Why have an option of switching bands if it were instead necessary to flash one's device?
Any last bits of advice on this? Thanks again.
Just switch to a different band - and perhaps rescan the available networks in the dialler app.
@Biohead, thanks - that's just what I wanted to hear.
If you are visiting the US and do not mind paying roaming charges, then do nothing as the XDAIIs will automatically switch to TMobile or Cingular on the 1900 -- who ever your Asian company has an agreement with. You can also buy a prepaid SIM from one of these companies or others (check the web).
If you are coming to live in the US, I suggest you get regular service with TMobile or Cingular as they are the only US providers that have GSM service. Someone on this forum already suggested that. I have no problems using my XDAIIs with the TMobile SIM card. Just make sure that your phone is unlocked for this option!
@SKassam,
That's interesting. I'm not sure I understand though... "on the 1900"? The bands on my Xda IIs are 850, 900, 1800 and 900/1800. I will be staying for only 1 month, so maybe I _should_ go with roaming, as it seems that otherwise I'd have to pay for some kind of package deal for a new SIM from TMobile or Cingular. My Xda IIs will really just switch to one of them automatically upon my arrival? Is it fairly certain, then, that my current provider (Matrix/StarOne), probably unknown outside of Indonesia, has some kind of agreement with one or the other? Lastly, are roaming charges typically prohibitive and exorbitant, or sensible? Thanks for your info. I appreciate any advice I can get, as I don't want to find myself out of the loop for a month.
@sub_rosa25,
The XDAIIs is a Quad band phone as in this link:
http://www.seeo2.com/product/XdaIIs/template/XdaIIsProductInfo.vm
May be you have a different model and not an XDAIIs?
Sorry for the confusion. It's definitely an Xda IIs, and quad-band; it's just that 1900 is not covered in its specs. US uses 850 and 1900 - the Blue Angel is compatible with 850. My problem is just that I don't know if T-Mobile or Cingular will do what you suggest they'll do upon my arrival. I need to know if it's more cost-effective to roam for a month or to buy the costly T-Mobile package just to get a new SIM. I suppose I should just contact my current provider and ask about roaming coverage and fees. Your info did help, though. Thanks again.
@sub-rosa25,
I think you had better check with your provider because when I travel overseas, I have the world roaming option available free from my provider, TMobile. Roaming can cost a pretty penny so be careful how much roaming you do.
You can also check the websites for TMobile and Cingular and select Indonesia to see if Americans have your service provider when in Indonesia. You will also see how much your provider charges by the minute to Americans which should give you an idea as to how much raoming might cost in the US for you.
Just buy a phone card when in the US and it will be very cheap.
Right, there are several GSM bands available throughout the globe. Each continent usually uses a different one. I say GSM bands because there are also different types such as CDMA, WCDMA, EDGE, EV-DO etc.
There are 4 main bands of GSM. 850, 900, 1800 and 1900. Europe uses the dual band 900/1800 with the US using either 850 for some networks or 1900 on the others.
From what I can tell there are only 2 networks in the US that uses GSM technology: T-Mobile USA and Cingular. These are the only two networks that you will be able to use with the BlueAngel.
In order to use your BA in the US you have one of two choices. The first would be roaming. If Matrix/StarOne have an agreement with either T-Mob or Cingular it will automatically roam onto that network and it should lock it, much like it would at home. If not, you will have a choice of either of the networks - it won't really matter which one you choose. Just set your network selection to automatic and it will do the business itself
The other option (and it may be cheaper in the long run), will be buying a PAYG sim for either T-Mob or Cingular whilst in the states. Just bung the sim in (presuming the phone is unlocked), again set the network to automatic and it will do the job itself.
Roaming is generally an expensive option so is only worth doing for a small amount of time. In your case, it might be worth buying a PAYG sim and putting $10 on or so.
Long story short: as long as the network selection is automatic you will be fine.
I have a friend who currently has a Sprint BB (Tour) with a SIM card. He's looking to get the Captivate because it has a SIM card slot. I already know of the two different Network Types (GSM vs CDMA), and their different network frequencies. I was just curious if that SIM would work in that phone?
I would highly doubt it. But give it a shot
Sent from my captivate so excuse the spelling mistakes
Thanks, but I also read that the frequencies supported in the BB include the ones supported by AT&T network , 850MHz and 1900 MHz. We will just have to see tho..
No. Sprint & Verizon used CDMA networks. AT&T and T-mobile use GSM. Completely different radios. Square peg/round hole.
Thanks. I understand the CDMA/GSM differences, just thought that the SIM would support GSM networks and with the Captivate being a GSM phone, it would just work. But w/o an AT&T account, that just really wouldn't work out.

Sprint sim in the BB is for overseas use making it a global phone. The sim that is in there should be Vodafone or something like that. It is so it can be used in the UK or accross the pond.
You can have the BB unlocked and put an ATT sim in it and use the edge network but no 3g. But the sim that is in the BB now will not work on ATT network.

Negative. It's not for use overseas like Verizon's BlackBerry devices.
The reason for the SIM Card in the Sprint BlackBerry devices is for connection to the old Nextel IDEN network for their push-to-talk system.
What that means is, though, that it will -not- work in a Samsung Captivate because though the IDEN SIM is the same size/shape as a GSM SIM, but they are not even remotely the same. Still square peg/round hole like a previous poster said.
I have an Ekit SIM card that we have used successfully for international calling when we're traveling (we're based in the US). I have used it in my old HTC Touch Pro 2 (one of Verizon's 'world phones') - put in the card, then the pin, and it connects to available GSM signals. Testing it out at my home in NC, it quickly connects to TMobile.
I have SIM unlocked my wife's Motorola Droid 3, another Verizon 'world phone' - I install the SIM, boot it up, type in the PIN which is accepted, but when it tries to connect, I get the following:
Network Error
No GSM/UMTS networks were found. Would you like to switch to the Global mode?
Is there something different about the signal bands between these 2 phones, such that my Touch Pro 2 has no problem connecting to TMobile GSM here in the US, while the Droid 3 won't? Now that I write this, I do kind of remember reading somewhere that the Droid 3 is not compatible with US GSM bands, so that might explain it.
The bigger question is will it still work outside the US? Specifically, we're going to Tanzania, by way of Amsterdam, and would like to have the option of calling home, or receiving calls from home, with my wife's Droid 3 (I retired my Touch Pro 2, and am now using the Samsung Galaxy Nexus).
We want to travel as light as possible, so would prefer not to bring an extra phone if the Droid 3 will in fact work with this SIM card when overseas.
Thanks!
Being that you have a U.S. branded DROID 3, you need to do some modifications to get it to work on GSM carriers.
Everything you need is here

Thanks for the reply - interesting link!
In my case, I don't need it work on GSM carriers in the U.S. - I just want to be confident it will work when I'm overseas.
I did a little more checking, and confirmed that (without the steps in your link) the Droid 3 would not work with US GSM carriers, so I'm reasonably confident I'll be okay when I get overseas.
Thanks again.

You just need the unlock code, either by contacting Verizon with an account in good standing (or a friend with one) or purchasing one by a well known code dealer (I've heard several people recommend unlock4moto). Although you did mention you already unlocked it. Just putting that there for drifters reading the thread.
After unlock, the D3 should work flawless with foreign GSM carriers, you just need to make sure to input the APNs for data if they are not provided already on the SIM. Otherwise, the phone will not connect to US GSM networks (such as T-Mobile, which is 2g only, D3 lacks the 1700MHz band for Tmo 3g), it would require a flash of the XT883 radio + build.prop... Which is actually quite quick, painless, and simple once you do it a couple times. I keep a copy of both build.props in my /system folder.
For informational purposes; the D3 supports these bands to compare to carriers;
UMTS on 850Mhz, 1900Mhz, and 2100Mhz. (Supports HSPA+ 14.4Mbps)
GSM/EDGE on 850Mhz, 900Mhz, 1800Mhz, and 1900MHz.
CDMA on 800Mhz and 1900Mhz
Stock radio gets you; Verizon in the US, unlocked for any foreign GSM network
XT883 radio gets you; No CDMA (Might work with RUIM card, SIM equiv for foreign CDMA networks/4g LTE networks) GSM anywhere, including the US.

Yes, I've already unlocked the SIM - got that through Verizon with no difficulty. Appreciate the other details!
Based on what I've read, and the posts here, I'll be happy to leave my Touch Pro 2 home, and the D3 should do what I need to on my trip. I actually don't need/want data on my phone out there - just wanted another option to call home when WiFi isn't available (I'll be using Skype when it is).
Thanks for the replies - told me what I needed to know!

Hi,
I have an unlocked GSM international HTC One, bought from Handtec (UK).
I'm going to USA next week, and wanted to buy a prepaid sim card with a 3g plan. So far the best option that i found is T-mobile. But i have doubts about compatibility.
Will i be able to have LTE with my current internatonal One with a T-mobile network ? Or at least 3G/H ? or is it going to be limited only to Edge, as i've read somewhere ? I think T-mobile only uses 1700 and 2100 UMTS bands, which i think my phone is not compatible with...please correct me if im wrong.
Which US GSM network would be the best (compatibility wise) option for my phone ?
Thanks
Please, someone answer me...
I just need to know if i'll be able to have something more than Edge speed with my current phone under a t-mobile network ? Or my only option is At&T ?
Thanks

I may be wrong (so you may want to cross check the info).
T-Mobile uses AWS bands for LTE; International HTC One doesn't support the AWS required by T-Mobile. You MIGHT be able to use 3G/H.
Sprint is CDMA so that's off the table.
I think AT&T will be your best. You might wanna check the coverage in the intended area of use of any carrier you choose.
Get a straight talk att SIM. 45 and att network... We don't really offer the traveler SIM options other countries do... In fact, because of "terrorism" you would be better off buying a Tracfone at Wal-Mart because most services require you to register your phone to a US address to even activate the SIM

It was briefly discussed before just want to clarify, there are plenty of GSM versions of Note 4, I have T-Mobile so would like to know which ones aside of SM-910T would work. I can verify that AT&T SM-N910A works fine, what else is good?
SM-N910R4 US Cellular not sure whether they are GSM
SM-N910P Sprint has a SIM card slot not sure what they are...
SM-N910V Verizon has a SIM card slot not sure what they are...
There is also SM-N910W8 (other Canada and PR GSM operators)?

As far as the Verizon and Sprint versions go, I am not sure if they support falling back to GSM/UMTS when no LTE coverage is available. These providers never used GSM/UMTS for their 2G/3G networks instead they used CDMA so that is probably what these phones support. Most likely the N910T or the AT&T version of the Note4 will be your best bet for on the T-Mobile network. A quick google search for US Celluar says that they also used CDMA, so their variant is probably in the same boat as the Sprint/Verizon phones. If you are really looking for something different look up the Note 4 Duos, was a dual sim phone released in Hong Kong and possibly other variants in Asia. My understanding is it only supports LTE/3G/2G on one SIM and 2G only on the 2nd SIM however.
