How to modify custom roms before installing? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Although I admit I have not yet fully grasped the concept of creating custom roms, the fact that all ROMS has a PDA file (collection of the rfs files and bins),
is there any way to edit the PDA file and remove any unwanted apps contained before flashing it to my phone?

I would recommend to pm a developer, with preinstalled thanks and apologies, they are all very helpful if you are polite, articulate, and appreciative

Customs Roms are zip files. open them with winzip/wanrar.
Remove and add apk files to system folder if they are system apk files, remove/ add
files to data folder. They are your files to be installed automatically.
Put things in sdcard folder, these will be copied diecetly to sdcard. I flashed more than 100 times this way, no problem until now. I remove nearly 40-50 files from system folder, and my launcher, alarm, office...user apk files to datat folder. When the flashing ends, i have a fresh rom with installed many programs.
There is even a script file you can edit and change your language lets say.
Phonesetupwizard begins with your language.

@yken wow thanks a lot for that detailed instruction, it never occurred to me that you can modify it to that extent, i will be trying that asap ^^

Your welcome
i now know how to add apk files to an update.zip, but the bootanimation.zip just went right over my head
If i want a new bootscreen, do i have to make a whole new custom rom, or can i just flash the new bootscreen?

You can just delete all other files and folder so you only have fx if your bootscreen is placed like this: META-INF and system system> customize> resource>bootanimation.zip
That should be your only files and folders. Of course if you your bootscreen is placed in data/local/bootanimation.zip then that should be your only directories and files
Limit?
Really like this and it would make trying different Rom easier for me but is there a limit to the amount of apk's you can add or a maximum Rom size?
Have tried again and again over the last couple of days to add 32 (free market apk's) to VillianRom12 but can only get a successful flash at around 12 Apk's and a Rom size of 122mb.
All other tries give me an Error while flashing saying something along the lines of "Error with Line 11" and "Flash aborted".
After a successful flash and reboot 'SD & Phone storage' says I have 158mb of Internal Phone Storage is that different storage to where the Rom is Flash.
If this is not possible can I flash an Update.zip with just the apks?
Thanks. A bit of a Noob.

Yes I think there's a limit of how many apps you can add you just have to install the rest manually

I installed the new Pancake ROM on my HTC Tattoo. I can't find the location of my current bootscreen. Do i have to replace the bootscreen.zip in the ROM and flash this ROM, or do i just have to copy the new bootscreen to my sd-card and find the location to paste it at the right place?

Hi,
Very nice idea and good tutorial.
But for me, it doesn't work.
I want to add EsFileExplorer to my FroydVillan 1.0.0 (Froyo 2.2) rom.
I copy the file in app folder, i save, i signe my new rom.
I flash my HTC Hero, all is OK, but when i want to use EsFileExplorer, Android says: "Must close ES File Explorer (process .com.estrongs.android.pop). Please try again".
Can you help me ?
Thx
PS: I try with Astro file explorer and same issue

My post no. 200 LMAO
That happens sometimes. Not all apps work when they are put in system/app. Try putting them in data instead. If that doesen't work you just can't do it with those apps and you'll have to install them from market...
BTW are you sure these apps are Froyo compatible?
A list of what the apps are and whether they are safe to remove would be really helpful. Although probably a lot of work to compile. Just a suggestion. Great tutorial though

[ADD-ON] Epic, Nexus, and Moment Ringtones (Flashable Zip)

I started a thread on SDX right after the Epic came out with the manual way to get your beloved ringtones back and then some and promised to make it a flashable zip... naturally I feel the need to share this with both communities, so here you go!
Updated with FroYo Sounds:

Just wanted to stop by and say thanks - Gremlyn1, I've included this collection in SyndicateROM "Fully Loaded".

No idea why at all, unless for some reason the files didn't copy over... have you tried flashing again? The script doesn't do anything except remove the old sound files and add the new ones.
Updated this with new FroYo sounds (some Samsung ui sounds). The .zip is not yet CWM3 compatible, that will come soon. If you have changed the TW_Battery_caution.ogg to TW_Battery_caution.ogg.bak or removed it, etc., then you just need to remove that file. This zip includes a TW_Battery_caution.ogg.bak already, as it got included when I pulled the sounds from my phone.
I took the liberty of updating this package.
Changes:
CWM Script now properly erases all sound files in /system/media/audio prior to copying.
Deleted Ding.ogg and Noisy_One.ogg from Ringtones as they are identical to Noises1.ogg.
Edited title tag of Noises1.ogg from Noisey One to Noisy One.

any chance of converting it from amend --> edify?
for those of you who use CWM3 and want this on your phone.
Extract contents of zip to C:\
Open CMD prompt
Browse to ADB folder
adb push C:\epic-nexus-moment_sounds_froyo_signed\system /sdcard/system
adb shell
#su
#remount rw
#cp -r /sdcard/system/media /system
edit: I flashed your zip on my epic (went back to old CWM and RFS) and it removed the system sound when you click icons and the dialpad sound

Dialpad and clicking sounds still work here. Make sure your system volume is not set to 0.
This would be awesome if it was made Edify Scrpitagible.. yes.. scriptigible. I just dropped it via root explorer into the /system/ folder
I'm a newbie to flashing with the Epic.... already bricked my wife's phone once. =)
I upgraded to EH17 using Odin and apparently that messed up all her ringtones and notification sounds. I wanted to know if there was a way I could flash this file using CWM 3.1.0.1. I get an error msg saying that amend scripting is not supported.

Take the files out with 7 zip and open a zip file (from a theme!! don't use the srf zip or any other "rom" zips they wipe data) you know works on cwm3. Make a backup and delete all the folders inside besides META-INF then take your old zip and copy the files over to the new zip, of course without the META-INF. Just to clarify you want the new zips META-INF folder only!
Cd's or tapes?
Noob here ....I' am unable to find a zip file which is not a rom file...i wanted to follow the above mentioned procedure of modifying the zip file for using it on CWM3x. Can you tell me which is teh appropriate zip file which i can use for modification so that i can restore the default ringtones of EPIC 4G.
I flashed the legendary rom and saw that many ringtones have been taken off...i want to have stock ringtones back on my system
Grab a flashable theme zip and use that.....
Just make sure inside that zip once you delete out the "theme" contents you leave the META-INF file/folder...
Then make a folder of you own in called
/system
Then inside /system make one called
/media
then inside /system/media/ make one called
/audio
Then place the appropriate folders containing either
/alarms
/notifications
/ringtones
/ui
inside that /audio directory....
Close it up and flash it...
If that is too much for you to follow... Just use this zip I'm providing below..
Blank Flashable
Just open it with WinRaR or WinZip and you will see all the folders in place exactly as I described... Place your contents in the appropriate folders and flash..
followed exactly as mentioned above, downloaded the zip file, opened it and copied the tones as suggested and flashed my phone....the tones did not turn up in the list but i ended up loosing facebook, gmail and couple of other apps !....what could have gone wrong ?

Not sure... There is nothing there in that "Blank Flashable" except for the META-INF file with your standard install scripts and then I created the folders & path to the media/audio/
Not to sure what you could have done to cause FB, GMail and others to be lost as a result of that zip file...
BTW, you did make a Nandroid Backup before flashing as normal rule of thumb correct?
FYI, any other devs, etc... willing to verify the zip I posted has nothing to do with erasing/removing those apps described by the member please feel free to do so...

yeah i think only 1 app is there in data/app = gallery i think i removed that thinking that it was the gallery3d
i changed the launcher and a couple of things in the system/app
are there limitations of which apps that i could put there...
btw is it ok if i change the updater-script to update-script?
or i shouldnt have change that... the kitchen was requesting to change it

You should just do what LDrifta said if your still having problems.
OH and regarding the update-script, heres your answer straight from the op of the kitchen:
QUESTION: Why do I need to convert the ROM's updater-script to an update-script when using the kitchen?
The kitchen can only perform operations on an update-script. UpdateR-scripts are too complicated to check because there are so many combinations of parameters for every command and for different devices; plus they can be written in different formatting styles. Thus the kitchen converts them to update-script so that there is one universal method to modify any device's configuration. If we didn't convert the updater-script then it would take months of work to overhaul the dozens of scripts (plus doubling my work) to accept updater-scripts, which would really NOT make a difference in the end anyway and would likely slow down the kitchen due to extra checks made in the updater-script. So please do not request this again and again, there is no gain in doing it (I also don't have that much free time ...).
When you build the ROM you have the option of converting it back to an updater-script, or the kitchen will convert it automatically if it decides it's necessary. The conversion back to the original updater-script is near-perfect, as I have already spent months on the implementation to get it right.
QUESTION: I have converted my update-script to an updater-script, but after flashing I still have the original ROM on the device.
That means your updater-script did not have the proper mount points defined for the system (and/or data) partition. Refer to this post for more info.
QUESTION: My device only supports ROMs with the updater-script/update-binary files but not the update-script
If you extract a ROM that contains an updater-script, then the kitchen will ask you if it should convert it to an update-script. You *must* use an update-script while customizing the ROM, as the kitchen is not capable of modifying updater-scripts. When you are ready to build the ROM, though, you will need to convert it back to an updater-script if the device requires it. Use the option in the Advanced menu to convert update-script to updater-script, or else the kitchen will ask you to convert it while building the ROM.

ok well depending on what apk's you are putting in.. if they are system required like a sense app.. it wont work on a froyo base rom.. but if its something like superuser or mail or something and is compatible with your rom than put it in system/app folder.. if its something that you want the choice to uninstall later on like a 'task killer' apk or something, place it in data/app folder..
and to sign it you dont need kitchen, you can download an auto-sign.zip file for windows here on xda.. all you do is unzip it directly to C: drive, place zip file in filder rename it to 'update.zip' than run the 'sign.bat' and it will sign the zip file. than you can flash it

did u do this on Kitchen?
If you want to add Market or non-stock apps (*.apk) to your ROM (which can be uninstalled or updated from your device later) then select the kitchen's menu option that adds "/data/app functionality". Afterwards you can copy these .apk files to the new /data/app folder of your working folder.
EDIT; After your done adding/deleting all the apps, dont forget to use the sign apk command to sign.

I am using the GT540 with 2.1 rom

some applications run without odex (example lgecamera.apk)

how do I
please help
Thank you for answers
I'm sorry for my English
I think first you need to understand the concept of ODEXing. In stock LG roms the system applications are Odexed. "ODEX" stands for Optimized DEX - Classes.dex is usually a file that stands inside the apk file of any application. When a program is odexed the file is extracted from the apk, optimized, and saved alongside the application in the odex format. However, since the apk no longer contains its (albeit optimized) classes, deleting the odex file leaves the application broken and unusable, until you reinstall it again. Now, I can think of only one way to deodex right now, but I really don't think it's a good idea(The rom i'm using was deodexed, yet I odexed it intentionally). What you need to do is:
1. Make a backup of your phone using clockworkmod recovery
2. From that backup take system.img and boot.img
3. You will need to download and run Android Kitchen. Since it's a Linux program, you'll need that as well. Look into it.
4. Insert the 'boot' and 'system' img files into the kitchen, and use the deodex option, then export the rom as update.zip
5. Put the file in your sdcard, boot into recovery, and format system
6. Choose 'install update.zip', and install the one you've created
7. From 'Advanced' menu clean Dalvik-Cache, and see if the phone works now.
While this *should* work *in theory*, as far as I know using a backup to modify it in the kitchen doesn't always work. Also, since I imagine some of your system apps are now broken, what I told you to do should be done after first reinstalling the rom in some way, in order to get your apps straight.
Well, I hope I've been helpful. Good luck.

For deodexing? There's one for odexing, but I'm not sure about the opposite one. I'll do a search. Besides, some of his system apps are already screwed up, so I doubt that will help.
This kitchen can run on Cygwin (author mentioned it)

[Q] Failing at APK install

Was wondering if anyone could tell me the process after editing drawables with apk multi tool, The tutorial hicks was kind enough to write is for apk manager and some of the options aree different. i know this is a noob question but gotta start some where.
After i extracted apk's from a zip and edited drawables I then opened multi tool
and zipped apk's, Then I copied these files over old ones in original zip placed in my sd card and tried to flash, i got cant install zip (bad) from cwm.
anyone care to explain what im doing wrong, or what the process is after editing, im not sure what signing and zip aligning are just yet.
Forgot to compile
ok got it decompiled, edited drawables, then recompiled (didn't sign because it said not to for framework-res.apk)
this created unsignedframework-res.apk in modding folder, deleted original framework in modding folder renamed unsigned to just framework-res.apk and pushed to /system/framework through adb, then reboot phone and get stuck in boot loop crash or phone boots then evrything fc's
Any ideas on what im doin wrong? feel like im so close to getting it to work just doing something stupid in the process of re installing.

installed latest toolset with sdk manager and AVD,
Set path Variable

got it by manually pushig system apk's but now everything force closes... wondering if i messed up signing it somehow or if it has to do with it being a custom rom?

You shouldn't have to sign any of the apk's, i was actually told that signing them could prevent them from working. I also had problems pushing apks to my phone using adb, i kept getting force closes, even after rebooting. I could only get it to work by creating a flashable zip and flashing files through cwm. Why that worked over pushing it to the phone, I have no idea, but oh well.
Another thing to try is wiping cache and dalvik, until I tried that, a lot of the changes I made ro the systemui.apk didn't actually change anything.

What apk's are you Modding, and what do you have in your zip file?

I just skimmed over this but immediately I see your adding a new file to the zip that will cause a bad zip all you need to do is create a new zip and copy all of the files in the bad zip and make the new one including your Meta inf folder and all that everything needs transferred.
Also with editing images it is not necessary to decompile extracting is fine to extract and zip after you changed what you wanted the only reason to decompile is to be able to read XML and it also let's you see boarders in the .9 images. Have you tried just pushing the apk to the phone instead of making a zip?

Yes i pushed through adb because multi tool cant find adb no matter what directory i install them in etc, but when i pushed it worked, changed the image but then everything fc'd after reboot. Thanks for the info i will try justneed to figure out how to make a new zip
