[Q] GB and battery life - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Have been on GB for awhile now and for the most part, I'm loving it. I just read a post where the op says that Darky's gb roms have great battery life. I've been on Contiuum 5.5 since it came out, and I love Cezar's roms, but the gb one's seem to have less than desirable batt life.
I guess my question is this: It's been awhile now since I was on froyo and so I can't recall how battery life was. I'm thinking about going back, just for that reason. BUT, don't want to go through the whole process if batt life was just minimally better than 2.3.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!
Friday

My battery life is much better with these I9000 GB roms than it ever has been.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App

I agree also, my battery life is the best it ever was. When I come home from school my battery life is around 80-75 percent. Versus on Froyo which would be around 45-40 percent.

GB has given me great battery life. On days that I play with my phone for hours (games, music, news, txt) at the end of day I would have less than 10% battery life. Now (with exception of when I use Netflix on 3G) I can't get below 60%.

Is everyone uc??? Perhaps (most likely ) I haven't got voltage set, or tweaks tweaked correctly...

No, I use xcal kernel because I felt like my phone had more problems when I tried playing with UC or OC. Where I found my control is managing what apps are installed on my phone. Anything that is a resource hog is gone and anything that needs to connect to data all the time is gone. I also froze (using TiBu) google maps and SNS. Those two items on gingerbread seem to drain my battery.

24 hour battery life with heavy usage is doable.
EDIT: Did you flash to a GB ROM without clearing battery stats/flashing without a fully charged battery?

It allows you to sync your Facebook, Twitter and Myspace accounts with the phone. Since I use Tweetdeck the only other purpose I would have it is to sync Facebook pictures with my contacts. Since I flash so often, its one less thing I have to link.
I learned that if I freeze SNS and install the Facebook app, I still can't sync the contact pictures.

I am on hour 36 with moderate usage with over half a battery left using Contiuum 5.x It is awesome!

I've tried several GB kernals and ROMs and my battery life sucks!
I can't get 24 hours out of any of them even with minimal use.
And yes I did a charge bump and no I don't have any widgets running and yes I froze maps and no I'm not OC'd.
I'm lucky if I get 10-12 hours.
I love GB and the speed and smoothness but this battery thing is giving me pause.

I get about 18 hours on a battery with heavy use. Have you updated maps? The new updates are killers on battery sense it always restarts. Do you leave wifi and by on? These will also cause your battery to drain

I would try clearing battery stats; what's the worst that can happen? You're battery life being bad?

LOL @ KT!
Maybe I just need a new batt?

For those that haven't saw it yet:

Now that my battery stats are functioning after a few cycles, I'm getting phenomenal battery life.
The picture below documents it. It's probably light use for most of you - an handful of calls, checking my email every couple hours, an hour of music playing on a walk. I also shut off auto-rotate last night, hearing that it may solve the "charge drop" issue, and maybe that contributes to the following.

Today android os usage was about 5 hours and killed my battery. Could not get it to stop either even with reboots. Very annoying. Hasnt been happening much till today.

What is reasonable battery use?

I diconnected my phone from the charger, and it was at 100% at 830 this morning and now at 1130 it is at 56%/. This is after probably abotu 1-1.5 hours of browsing the web on my phone and configuring widgets.
I was wondering if that is normal battery drain? I have been flashing my phone quite a bit lately and it seems that the battery life is not that great. I have already recalibrated my battery as well.
Also my phone is overclocked to 1.3ghz.
You might want a second opinion but I'm going to say yes
If there is evil in this world it lurks in the hearts of man.
1130 AM? If so that is not good at all.
Not good at all, I am running Pinnacle 1.2 for 29. 5 hours since last charge and I have 29% remaining, that includes roughly 3 hours display on time and just shy of 1 hour phone calls.
Very happy with Pinnacle 1.2

If you're on Apex, try going without the overclock and switching to the DarkCore kernel. That might help your battery life a little bit.
Did the phone feel hot?
What kind of sites were you hitting? White background? Lot's of Flash?
You've got three things that I see hitting your battery hard - the data transfers, the screen and the CPU usage. Depending on how your overclock is set up, I'd guess it's causing your CPU to use at least 30% more juice.
I can get days of idle time, but only hours of heavy use out of my battery. There are certain web sites and games that seem to suck the battery dry.

Well when my phone is on standby, I find that it drains at a reasonable rate. It is just when I use my phone that it drains fairly quickly.

Agree with jsfLip!
With moderate use, my Cap get out of battery in 8-10h.
Iam using Pinnacle 1.2, its standby status is quite good! 1-2% after 8h standby at night!
Please have a try!

and whats the definition of moderate use? Sorry I ask this but I have seen people with 4:30 hours of display calling it moderate.
Plus you need to caliberate your battery

I've tried different settings on my phone and have not been able to get your kind of battery life.
I recently flashed MosaicVI and using the JV6 modem. After using this modem I have been getting better results but not quite as good as your.
What I'm trying to find out is there any certain setting you have your phone in, i.e. only on WiFI, Auto Display, sound, Disabling Your data when not using it? I would really love to get this kind of results. I'm sure everyone else would to.
Oh, I've also cycled my phone battery 3 times everytime I flash a different ROM. Please school me up on how to get those results.
P.S. I tried to quote you and reply but me being new to posting comments did not let me.
Go to market and download "Data switch". You will see marked improvement to your battery life.
So is that the secret? "Data switch".
All it does is turn off data usage so your cappy is not using data for all the background services (synch and such). Its what I use when I want the battery to last and don't need a data connection.

Why I think battery life sucks so bad...

I usually have a multimeter on my counter for my ecig mods, and, since I change batteries pretty often now that I have spares for my thrill, I'be been randomly checking thier voltages. What I've found is that a "dead" battery is at ~3.7V. That's not dead. These phones should discharge to something like 3.2V. Anyone have any idea as to why they would read nominal voltage as dead?
Sent from my LG-P925 using XDA App
After few more charges, it discharges to about 3.43V, still high I think, so I'll keep an eye on it.

What you're saying actually makes sense. The system has to calibrate itself to the battery. This is why battery life tends to improve over time as you discharge and charge the phone. There are ways to kick start the process but eventually it will do it on it's own. My battery life has tripled after a couple weeks.

i am wondering why i have fully charged and discharged my phone numerous times and my battert is horrible. its gotten worse. i unplug it with 100% at 5:30 a.m. its now 9:40 a.m. and im at 62%! i have sent 2 text messages this morning and my app manager has no open apps. Why would my battery be so bad? i have had this phone since the day it came out and love it. im not real familiar with all the "rooting" or all this fancy stuff but i do know that the phone should have a better battery life than it does.
Does anyone know what i should be looking at to see what is killing the battery so fast. almost 40% in 4 hras and i havent even used it?

I have installed several ROMS i am new to the LG Thrill but with my previous HTC G2 y used cyanogen but as per this is a 3D phone cyanogen is not ready yet. But the best rom i have tried so far has been the thriller
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1261704
although is missing good things from the newer firmwares like the 3d app converter.
But i'm ussing the thriller Rom until LG releases the Gingerbread official update that comes with great new stuff
Here's what I've found out about the battery. It's apparently a known issue by google addressed in later updates.
Here's a great method to work with it for now.

This mine with 48% battery life left. I found out on mine if you play one of the 3d games and don't exit out of right it continued to run and eat the battery. I use wifi where ever it is available. Always leave it on unless I am on the road then I turn it off so it won't be hunting for a connection. Have gone 28 hours and have 30% battery left.
Had phone since September 4th and battery life has improved tremendously. Stock and unrooted.

Wifi is on but should not be sucking that much juice. i trashed the yahoo news app. my weather app is set to update manually. i dont have anything special done to my ohone like all these forums suggest the "rooting" or special rom's. it pretty stock.
I have used the battery calibrator app and it didnt seem to do anything for me. anybody else have other suggestions? i basically get about 3-4 hrs of battery life berfore having to charge unless i use the phone then i get about 2.
oh yeah and my wife has the same phone, some battery issues but i think her's is normal. so to see if it was the battery or my phone we swapped batteries. my original is in her phone working fine and i have her's and still crappy so i know it wasnt just a bad battery.
what do i do next??
You could install CPU spy from the market and see what it is showing you. See if it ever gets into deep sleep mode. I also use battery monitor widget from the market to see what all is using battery.

Better battery? Use a GB rom. 2.3.6

Hi all!
I've been fighting with the baterry drain and low battery performance through many months.
This was everytime with the lastest rom... So I decided to try a GB rom after knowing a guy here in my workplace that lended me a minute his SGS.
He had 18 hours of use and 80% battery left.
So I installed "Mesorom" and discovered thar I can have the screen ON 3 hours, and im discovering now how much time could it manage in standby.
I hope this gives you some advice about battery drain, looks like ICS and JB consume less power when on dual core, and on a single core it just drains too much battery. That is my opinion.
Has anyone got to this conclusion?
Please report your battery stats to compare! i'll do it in a moment.
here they are:

42 minutes of screen on time. gaming, web browsing, and instant messaging.
4 hours is still nothing. Post again if you accomplish those 18 hours and the battery is on just 2% left
rom failed to be stable, i'm trying to install official cm7 now.
BTW i managed to get screen on time of 2 hours, and 15% left of battery. 11-12h total use.
i will report when i know something else.
I use Mackay Rom (4.1.2) combined with a 1800 mAh battery and my phone lasts 2 days (airplane mode at night) with medium usage. Screen time between 3 to 4 hours.
i use CM10 and my battery life isn't too horrible, compared to a dell streak and iphone 3g like 8-10 hours standby time 4-5 hours use
Maybe I've got a little old battery, because on GB or ICS or JB my battery behave similarly. Average I have to charge my phone every second night if I use it normally. Recently I used it a little less and today's result below - 30 min of calls, about 20 min of 3G connection, 2h screen on. I use JB (SlimBean 3.1 with Semaphore 2.6).
Lol cm10 battery is better. Because ui using gpu instead of too much cpu.

I actually bought an I9000 for my GF and loaded up the newest stock rom JW8.
Battery life wasn't too good, so I switched to CM10 stable. It's really good now.
3h screen time in 2 days, or 2h screen time in 3 days. That's enough for a small device like this. I don't think gb has better battery drain than cm10.
The case is a little different on my n7100, where I get around 7-8 hours screen time on stock 4.1.2 and only 5 hours on cm10.

Galaxy S4 Active Battery Life

Just got the phone today and have not had a chance to calibrate the battery but the battery life so far is horrible compared to the original S4.
Anyone else experiencing bad battery life on this phone?
I'm the opposite. I had the S4 for a week and a half and traded it for the Active a couple of days ago. My battery life has been better than the original. I've got this phone set up the same as I did the s4 too. It probably just varies on what apps you have installed.

The battery life on my Active is far better than any other phone I've owned. I got 5 1/2 hours screen time yesterday with over 16 hours uptime. Still had 15% left when I replaced the battery this morning. Never seen anything like that before.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I537 using xda premium
I had the S4 for a few days and I was worried because my battery would be drained in less than 8 hours. Coming from an S2 that I had to baby to get through the day I was worried. Ever since I exchanged the S4 for the Active I don't really worry about playing games, even for a couple hours, because it easily gets me through the day.
Disable the only big battery drain I had was maps constantly updating my location. I disabled that and run on power saver. I woke up at 6am this morning and its 7:30 now, I still have 59% left. I used to average 22 hours on my old captivate so I guess I'm not doing too bad. I realize that having a phone that out performs most PC's is going to munch some milliamps.
I'm rooted, debloated, and try to avoid constantly updating apps. I use better battery stats to "tune" my usage too.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I537 using Tapatalk 2
I had the phone for a week, and after a few days my battery was draining like crazy (lost 90% overnight with everything off).
I went to the store and got a new battery...so far it's been amazing. I think my back cover may not have been 100% locked in to be honest, not sure if that would affect it or not.
I used to get between 4-5 hours on screen time. Stand by time doesn't mean much. I have noticed that the display is brighter so that could do it.
I also tried the battery from my S4 and same results.
My original battery is on charger. I am going to charge to full and completely drain it and check on screen time and report it.
After I recalibrated the battery it is looking great now. 1 hour on screen time only used 10% battery.
I will keep you posted.
The battery on my active is much better than on my regular s4. The standby time is actually good. My regular s4 always loses about 15% an hour in standby with nothing running.

I never lost hardly any battery at all in stand by with my regular S4.
I also set my GSM battery app to disable apps I don't want to turn on either (ATT Locker, ATT Wifi, etc..)
I am at 13hrs with 30% remaining. I have 2 email accounts, weather, and a network monitor that sync actively. So far, I like this, coming from a note.
I just declocked the cpu today and intend to do some more dabbling.

I want to understand battery performance of Moto G5s plus. I am seeing that battery life of my phone is very poor. It goes down to 70% from 100% in an hour with just usage of YouTube.
When i received my cell phone i haven't full charge it's battery before starting it. I have full charged my battery when it was 40% remaining. While the official manual says that, we need to full charge it before starting our cell phone.
Does Moto G5s plus need full charge of battery before start (when we are starting our phone just after unboxing)?
Anyone have similar issue?
How's battery life holding for others?
Thanks,
Abhishek

My phone's battery drained 12% for three and a half hour screen use (browsing, messenger etc. and Mortal Kombat - only 20 mins, though). The screen is almost at the least brightness.
I too faced q similar issue as yours. Turned out it was because of some app Battery HD or DNS something app (used to block ads) or maybe some other third-party app. I uninstalled all those and the performance improved significantly.
Give it a try.
I got 11 hours from 100% with 5 hours screen-on time

Did you full charge your phone before you switch it ON for the first time?
I would check for a rogue app draining the battery. I've had the phone for a week now and the shortest SOT I've had was 3hrs. That was with streaming music through Bluetooth while driving for 13hrs. My average ok normal day has been 5hrs with 35 percent left on battery.
No issues with battery life here. I didn't fully charge my device when I first unboxed it. Matter of fact, I didn't charge it until that night.
I've had this device since Saturday, so it's hard to say exactly how well battery life is exactly, but based on what I've seen so far...it's pretty damn good. I took it off the charger 5 hours ago and it currently says I have 2 days left. I haven't used it much today as I'm at work, but I have a feeling something isn't right with your setup [emoji848]
Being nobody else has posted any screenshots, figured I'd show mine [emoji6]

No. Instead, I used it until the battery discharged to 0. Then I charged it to 100 and used it till the battery drained to 0. Did the same like thrice. I really doubt such a thing had any effect on battery, though.

Did you try holding it in your left hand, hopping on your right foot, waving it around and around your head, shouting "go battery go go charge"? I reckon it's got as much chance of making a difference as anything else. It's a lithium ion battery - just charge it when you think that you're going to need it to last longer than it would if you didn't charge it, and make sure you fully charge it if you intend leaving it unused for months. Anything else is cargo cult nonsense.

Haha! I only replied to what the OP asked. BTW my intention to drain the battery to 0 before charging was to measure the time it takes to get fully charged from 0.

I had to lol at that. Moved to the Moto from a seriously battery impaired Nexus 6P and that was about the only thing I didn't try.
"Go battery go go charge" is now our household meme for "I have to charge my phone". Thank you.

Yes, you are right. Old batteries needed to full charge before switching it ON for the first. What i find surprising is that Moto is saying the same for new generation batteries and printing it in Manual.
I finally got a fresh new g5s plus and so far I can't complain about the battery life. On my second charge I got 2 days of battery with 8 and a half hour of screen on, but only a few calls, and almost always wifi. The next days I'm using the phone lot heavier with lot of GPS and calls, so we'll see then how it's going but so far I'm very satisfied.
By the way I haven't fully charged the phone out of the box but I've waited untill it was almost fischarged
