Hi,
Does any one know which Android Version Samsung OFFICIALLY fixed the stalling/lag issue for the SGS i9000? Is it even officially fixed?
Just that I'm recommending a phone for someone I'm not too close with and dont feel like loading on CM7 for a stranger
Searching only gives me millions of results for One Click and Voodoo solutions. I don't want to tell this person to go through these steps.
Thanks!
2.2.1 is pretty smooth and fast. 2.3.3 also, but there are issues with battery life and stuff that can be fixed but require knowledge. So, I think 2.2.1 ROMs are the best option for someone who doesn't want to deal with custom roms and kernels and rooting. Of, course a custom rom and kernel or just a custom kernel can make the phone not just smooth but blazing fast.
Hm, can you confirm that the Stallling issue is actually fixed from 2.2.1 onwards?
Specifically the problem when you click Market/Market > MyApps/Maps/Contacts and it takes ~30 seconds for it to load.
I'm not too concerned general chipiness/lack of finger-tracking smoothness.
Sorry for the paranoia , just that i hated the stalling before I was on CM7.
Officially? None. Samsung have repeatedly announced that users of their latest updates "will experience smoother performance".
They announced that with 2.2 and 2.2.1 and I'm on JVH and can confirm even JVH benefits from not running on the rfs filesystem. Yet they've never acknowledged a specific issue that creates lag, even though everyone on this forum knows exactly why and how to fix it.
Actually all stock samsung Roms run on rfs file system including the 2.3.3 ones (which means JVH too). The problems you're talking about are generally fixed by changing the file system from the stupid samsung's rfs to usual linux ones - ext4 or ext2 (ext 2 makes it extra quick in the GUI coz it quite improves the read-write speed) - everything opens immediately. Just stock 2.2.1 with changed file system will make the phone open the things you're talking about right away
Thanks for the replies.
So basically the problem exists for all Samsung ROMs, just to a lesser extent from 2.2.1 onwards. As proven by http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g1B2fstyrRA, 2:13 mins. How annoying!
Hm, not sure i can reccommend an unhacked SGS
I would say 2,2,1 usable without any lagfix ,
Before needed a lag fix .
But ten million users on 2.1 dont know what needs fixing lag whats that ???
SGS 2 no lag .

Okay there is now alot of mods and fixes on the SGS now. People are porting from captivate, vibrant and i9000. From your experience, what is the best mod/fix and what firmware works best with each mod? I am sure there are alot of combinations and not everyone will be willing to flash to different firmware and the mods. So i thought you guys come post your experience and such.
Stock mod with no changes: I9000JPJG8 (AFRICA)
Custom: XWJM5 + SamSet 1.9b + A2SD Lag Fix
If, like me, you don't want to go down the flashing different ROMs and messing with the SDcard route, try rooting this way (easiest):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=742403
and then install Autokiller off the market. It has, so far, made a massive improvement of the lagging problem with me on jf1 (O2 UK). It sounds a bit daunting but it is quite easy, plus its reversible if you need to make a warranty claim.
Mimocon hands down, was very hard to get the partition sorted but once it's done then applying the fix to subsequent firmwares has been a relative breeze and the performance difference had been staggering! There seem to be issues with force closes with the latest m5 firmware but clockwork recovery's fix permissions script appears to resolve them perfectly! Hope that helps a bit!

mimocon is the best i think, i did his version on my captivate and its working fine
Hi Everyone,
i'm pretty much new being a Samsung galaxy S user (but proud to be )
anyway, i've seen more than 6 version of Froyo 2.2 already here inside the forum but i really don't an idea which one is the best or latest (faster, stable etc)
i've installed Froyo 2.2 XXJPM with Odin and it's working ok~ but still a bit slow and buggy'-Jumpy when sliding within the Menu pages, no idea how to fix...
anyway, any idea which version will work the best for me or i should wait for the original-official one which should come out in Nov this year?
appreciate your comments folks.
thx!
Yanir
I use the stock Froyo JPM with the 336meg memory and universial lag fix, DAMN THE THING FLIES! I'm also using the ADVANCED JFS setting for universial lag fix. I highly recommend you just leave your froyo Stock and do what I did. The 336meg kernel also has busybox and root as standard. But hey, If you want to try roms then make sure the new roms have the universial lag fix in it as i notice a few already do. Also the extra 36megs of ram helps a lot. seriously
thanks!
can you share a link for the guide etc?
appreciate that mate!
Yanir
Or go with Doc's and Kalpik's ROM.
thanks Soniboy84

Please post a link to both the universal lag fix and the 336mg kernel.
I'm on Jpm with oclf and it's still pretty laggy
please help ive got JPC with rombie rom and i have to restart my samsung galaxy s i9000 like every day to to lag and fc.
I've tried several and this is the best for me.
This doesn't want to be in the development thread.....
I always ended up back on the doc's rom after trying others..
Use Voodoo 5 with any froyo rom and the phone will fly. Roms and tweaks are not making big differeces in speed. Only with lagfix you can feel the differnce and one of the easiest and fastest is Voodoo 5.
Any of DocRambone's bare-bones Rom with ULK kernel. All kernel tweaks on, JFS + EXT2 binds no journaling.

CyanogenMod 6.1 BETA2... Fastest ROM and nicest to use, unfortunately takes a huge chunk of functionality away while the ROM developers are cleaning up Samsung's messy programming.
Once it's a Release Candidate stage, I think this will be the way to go. They also might be able to get Gingerbread out faster than Samsung. Here's hoping.
i guess for a normal phone user(not like me or many ppl here), want the phone work as a phone should, go for doc's jpo v8 plus hardcore's k10X kernel with gps fix, you can't be wrong.
usze nany rom, especially doc's 9.01 and then flash the YA-OK kernel.
very stable very fast and smooth.
lagfix EXT4/EXT2 no binds.
you will have at least 2100 quadrant.
In fact I just flashed with KIES froyo, then added root, and clockwork, and then the kernel.
using launcher pro (purchased) I added the DENA v2 theme and it looks very nice.

Hey m8, could you please be more specific which Rom you mean cause I can't find it. A link would be awesome.
Futhermore which laggfix do you mean with that? Is that the voodoo lagfix in the clockworkmod?
greetz!

Wait, What? JPC o_0
Also, this shouldn't be on the dev forum.
Questions like this should really not be posted in this section. There are enough threads on these kinds of questions. Please learn to use the search button and read before you post!

Rombie ROM v2
thanks for all your help and time.
This could be a very informative thread but IMHO, it needs to be limited to only what works with some caveats. This should be a thread about what works.
If your ROM is in beta - don't recommend it! If it crashing constantly or throwing up FCs, don't recommend it! If the GPS doesn't work, don't recommend it.
Quadrant scores mean nothing - when you got your phone, it worked but had some lag. Now, with Froyo, lag has virtually been eliminated. Even the ROM dev are saying you don't need a lagfix in many cases as their ROM is so smooth.
There are nothing but ROM junkies in the dev forum; I'm one of them - load it on the phone crash it, load it on the phone crash it! But I didn't do this on my girlfriend's phone because I didn't want her calling me to fix it. There are a lot of people tiring of this and just want it to work. I admit the wow factor is wearing off for me. I'm leaning towards finding what works but I need some adrenalin... Some caveats?
1) Phone - no crashing/restarting daily
2) FC - limited; these will always happen occassionally our computers
3) GPS - good signal and lock
Without lagfix, I can recommend:
Doc's rom: v9.0.1_BUJP8 - very smooth, no lag fix required (quadrant 900+)
Modem ZSJPE (Hong Kong release) - very quick to lock on, very accuarate
BTW, our company developes GPS software for golfers always testing this!
My need for speed tells me to test the lagfix. If this thread continues, I'll be back...
hey guys,
i was just wondering if a lagfix is necessary when running froyo 2.2.1.
thank you
no one can answer that except you.
Do you feel like you need it ? or do you think your phone is fast enough ?
well i have never used a lagfix before and well i guess theres always room for improvement when looking at performance
Yeah suppose so, but be sure to do it properly when installing / removing the lagfix, this can cause bricked phones if done wrong.
also be aware you may experience excessive battery drain depending on the lagfix you choose
ive been reading around and think the voodo lagfix would me most appropriate, which one would you recommend?
I would wait for official Gingerbread release Android 2.3 .
jje
No one can recommend you a Lagfix... Speedmod and Voodoo are both brilliant, both have there upsides and downsides, but its what you prefer, try both and decide.
I have used Both, but i used SpeedMod most, thats just what i preferred...

Isn't gingerbread already out ?? (JV1) 2.3 ??
Im running CM7 at moment which is GingerBread. so i havent read much into the latest JV1 release.
Is that not beta Samsung release ??
JV1 feb 2011 release Samsung yet to release 2.3 finished product is how i read it .
jje
i have no idea, i like CM7 which is tweaked gingerbread so dont see the point in going down to stock gingerbread.... But i'll look into it a bit more.
It doesnt sound like samsung to actually release gingerbread officially lol... Its been a very long wait.
EDIT: JJEgan looks like you are right, it is still in BETA mode. thanks for the tip
Hello there,
Here's my situation: I'm still on Froyo JPY stock (unrooted) and have been reading extensively in this forums for quite a long time now.
I have various issues with my current configuration, the most prominent being fast battery drain (my phone has never lasted more than approx. 18hours), slow gps fix, occasional crashes and sometimes slow responses. Apart from that I dig the idea of a different lock-screen, VoodooSound for better audio recording quality while shooting videos at concerts, nice themes etc. etc.
Now I've looked into Virnik0's step-by-step guide and this sounds all very understandable and should give me a rooted 2.3.3 stock with SuperCurio's VoodooKernel (thank you in advance for such a clear guide).
However I'm still hesitating to upgrade for various reasons, and I hope someone can clear up some of these for me and might give me their general opinion.
1. Going from Froyo to Gingerbread, I feel like a full wipe would be necessary (or nicer and cleaner), am I right? How would I go about that before the update? (If I wait until the Kies Update, will this wipe my phone automatically?)
2. With the update, will I get the SamsungApps again with 2.3.3 that came with my phone on Froyo?
3. What's up with the issues in the 2.3.3 version, can they be fixed without too much understanding of mounting and rootexplorer etc.? (You read so much about issues like Swype, GoogleMaps, Battery Drain etc. It's hard to decide whether the new version will meet my needs or make things worse)
Now as an alternative, do you guys think flashing a custom Kernel like Voodoo (Froyo Versions) togehter with a less battery draining modem would already solve some, or all of my issues?
I am just quite confused with all the options and new information everyday and I don't want to mess up anything. This being said, I can easily access both Recovery and Download Mode with the 3-button combos (kind of an intermediate newbie here, i guess )
Well all opinions and answers are very much appreciated.
Kind regards.
Point one gingerbread is BETA .
Point two using the unofficial methods may brick your phone and will certainly void warranty .
Point three using unofficial roms means kies no longer updates .
Point four the Samsung apps you get are in the main the same .
Point four the majority of reported bugs are either bad flash or idiot using the phone .
Your choice to proceed .
Personal route would be to follow Virnik0's step-by-step guide. But stop before Installing Darky rom .
Instead go to Rom Kitchen and build a rom .
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=817703
Stock with WIPE Kernel Chainfires .and all other apps available .
when thats done install CF-Root-XW_XEE_JVB-v3.1-CWM3RFS
Followed by if required XWJVB_Gingerbread_v5.2_Android_lock
jje
Thanks for your swift reply, it is much appreciated.
Just for my understanding: The procedure you recommend sounds a little "double" to me:
If I follow Virnik0's guide until step 20 (right before Darky ROM), my phone has already been flashed with stock firmware including bootloaders + CFRoot Kernel + VoodooKernel (supercurio).
After that you mean go to ROM Kitchen (the new Beta I suppose?) and stock again this time with WIPE and Chainfire's Kernel. After that again with CFRoot Kernel?
I am confused. What is the purpose of this. Besides that, can you point me to the XWJVB_Gingerbread_v5.2_Android_lock file?
Not if its already flashed you dont need them just pick what you want .
I probably stopped as soon as i had 2.3 installed and then went rom kitchen etc .
Just stop before the post that says install Darky rom and you should be fine .
XWJVB_Gingerbread_v5.2_Android_lock file?
You will have to search i have deleted all my SGS 1 links .
jje
I think the point he was trying to make was that you can build a rom to suit your needs in the kitchen. If u want sammy apps you can include them, if u don't you don't have to.there are many custom roms out there too. alot off which strip out the crap from samsung. I personally use debusrom but this does not have samsung apps. it does however have the aosp lockscreens. Its all down to what you want. Which is why the kitchen may be a better option for you, right down to the modem you wish to use.

oh man ur always here to answer people's quesion u got thanks from me
now commenting on the original post, the only reason for me stay away from the gb roms is the call recording function which is unavailable yet in gb roms (apart from miui which is awesome but unstable according my experience )
MIUI is not unstable, it just has a few minor bugs, biggest one being battery drain. everything works as it should do, ive been using it since rc3 and i aint going back..... ever lol
